First it was a trip to the Ministry and then it was the search for missing daughters which prevented Professor Branxton from teaching his classes. But, finally, he had to admit that he needed to teach, regardless of the fruitless search for the twin toddlers. With a heavy heart, Professor Branxton opened the classroom door and moved to sit behind the desk at the front of the large, airy, classroom which was so much different from the classroom he had previously occupied.

As her professor went around the room, surveying her classmates' strengths and weaknesses, Lauren thought about the question posed. She knew what charms she was most successful at casting, but she had never given consideration which charms she'd most like to learn. She rested her head on her hand, tucking an escaped lock of her hair behind her ear with the other, and, pressured into deciding, chose two charms to mention of which she had always heard about of which she never knew the details. When it was her turn, she responded, "I think I'm best at Cheering or Summoning Charms, as both nearly always work for me." She bit her lip. "I would love to learn the Fidelius Charm..." her voice trailed off, and she hurriedly followed with, "but, as I've heard that is quite complex, I'd also like to hear about Confundus Charms."

Chloe smiled at her professor, "i'm best at the shield charm, but i would love to learn how to conjure a pratronus, even though it's really advance magic, i'm all about protecting myself."

Noelle glanced up at the mention of the Confundus Charm and nodded to the girl sitting a few seats away from her."The Confundus Charm isn't too hard,I've gotten that one down...it just takes some practice." she said in a soft voice,trying not to disturb the rest of the class.

Qaz certainly was a rookie when it came to spells and charms. She had a lot to learn and writing writing down notes as fast as she could. So much to learn.

"Many of the charms you've expressed an interest in learning will be covered in Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Rae," Professor Branxton began, his eyes shifting out of focus and his lips twitching in a curious smile for a moment. "However, I don't think you'll be disappointed in the charms I have planned for this term. What we'll be discussing and practicing are various security charms. What sort of charms might come under the heading of 'security'?"

Katelyn bit her lip nervously, and thought that it might be an invisibility charm...but she forgot the proper name, so she didnt raise her hand to answer. She wrote down the question, and waited for answers. In the meantime, her mind drifted to other things on her mind.

Lauren considered the question, then raised her hand. "Unbreakable charms, perhaps, as they can make objects resistable to breaking." Gaining more confidence, she continued, "Shield charms, Imperturbable charms, and Muggle-repelling charms would also be useful if security was in question."

"Protego is a sort of security charm but it is not entirely protective," Antwone began, "The Disillusionist Charm is rather helpful with security too if one wants be remain unseen."

Carolyn raised her hand. "The Fidelius (sp?) Charm would be the best because you need a secret keeper and someone can't come in unless they're invited in or told the location by the secret keeper. It'd keep random Muggles and house theives away."

Katelyn wrote down all these things, and made a mental note to look the ones up that she hadnt heard of. Her notes filled the whole first page, so she turned to the next one. Biting the end of her quill, she then started to write again, the lime green ink almost blinding her as she wrote.

Hannah raised her hand. "I read about charms that help wizards and witches with security at things like the Quidditch World Cup, some of these are 'Salvio Hexia,' 'Protego Totalum,' and 'Repello Muggletum,' and 'Muffliato'"

"Ah yes, there are many defensive spells that one might consider but, those are more for defense than security. Charms such as the shield charm (protego) are defensive. The Fidelius and disillusionment charms would be for security. Can anyone think what the difference between security charms and defensive spells is or are?"

Noelle raised her hand as well,thinking of something she remembered from her brother."Uhm,I think Stealth Sensoring charms would be helpful with secutity..." she trailed off,thinking, before she answered the next question.
"Would it be that security charms are more for places...like warning against intruders and such.Defensive spells are more for the individual wizard." she said,trailing off again.

Katelyn raised her hand. "Um, well, wouldnt defensive be out to hurt the person trying to hurt you, whereas sercurity would be protecting you without hurting anyone else?" she asked, blushing as she did so.

Carolyn raised her hand. "Defensive spells are usually for duels and such, whereas Security spells are mainly for locations and are more complex. The Fidelius Charm's way more complex than Protego."

Hannah raised her hand again and began slowly, "I think that defensive spells would be cast at another witch or wizard to protect yourself when fighting them. Security charms would be used to help protect a house or building or something from being intruded by anything unwanted."

Rapunzel noticed that most of the students had already sufficiently answered the question, so she just jotted down their answers quickly. Charms was starting to look like her favorite class, besides Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Cassandra's hand went into the air. "Defensive spells are what you use in a duel, to protect yourself. Something immediate, most times temporary." She smiled proudly, "While a security charm, is something you leave in place for the perpetrator to deal with when they show up. Not immediate, not used in a duel. Something more permanent, and set. The Fidelus charm, for instance, lasts until the secret keeper passes away."

Although Cassandra did not smile, she beamed at her professor and former Head of House.

Maybe because she was staring at him for the longest period ever or was it because they weren't surrounded my potion fumes when being around Professor Branxton that full view of him wasn't as bad. She couldn't help but notice his sudden bizzare behavior.

Amelia looked thoughtfully at the young Ravenclaw and shook her head in disagreement. They both lie in protecting you, but often security charms are used for more than one person or sometimes an object in preventing intruders. Defensive spells are also used mostly in protection of only yourself." she paused for a moment to think of some more concrete examples of what she meant, "However, defensive spells aren't always in defensive of yourself because there is the example of the Patronus charm."

Amelia smiled weakly at the Professor, hoping she was right.
