Professor Erikson walks in and sets up the classroom, putting little paintbrush-looking things at each seat. On a blackboard he writes, "I have been called away on an important matter for the Ministry. Professor Blaylock will be substituting for me. I hope to be back before the end of class. Please treat Blaylock the same as you would for me, only actually pay attention. I will state the status of the quarantined plants when I return."
Checking everything over once more, he dashes out. ooc: As you come in, please describe the plant with you. If you aren't sure how to describe it, refer back to the previous thread. A small key:
Over-watering: Very broad leaves
Under-watering: Very narrow leaves
Too much sun: Tall and straight, bamboo-ish, bright green
Too little sun: Short and spread out, a little viney, grayish
If you want to go into more detail, feel free to check the last lesson. If you come to the thread late, go ahead and describe it while looking at it with the first post you make. If you post walking in after class has started, you will still be penalized. Please remember to say what color the flowers are. Even if you've mistreated your plant, it should still be blooming. I mean, it is a magical plant, after all. | |

He closed the box of multicolored seeds and tucked it away. "The multi-colored seed will produce flowers that are a myriad of colors, and those plants will have a one in a hundred chance of producing one to five silver seeds. A one in a ten-thousand chance of producing any more than that. And these seeds will produce a plant that has flowers of pure silver."
He followed up by getting a plant that had looked like the plain plant he showed them in the first lesson, except the stalks looked straighter and stronger, and the blossoms looked almost like liquid silver.

As Kennedy listened to Professor Erikson rattle off the odds of producing special seeds, she seriously doubted her plant could possibly be successful at producing a seed that would eventually produce silver seeds. But even so, she resolved to encourage her plant to do the best it could. When Kennedy saw the metalic silver color of Professor Erikson's plant, she was immediately envious. She hoped more than anything that her plant would give her the perfect multicolored seed.

"I see quite a few plants here with rather broad leaves, thin leaves, and..." He stopped, seeing Tag's plant. "Oh my... Tag, whatever happened to your- nevermind. Meet me in the greenhouse later." Kerry raised her hand, "Well the vivid blue color shows it had enough nutrients but how I'm not sure, because the spreading vines clearly show it's in need of water and sunlight.
As for the second one, I"m guessing that too needs sunlight and is growing tall to try to reach more of it? While the narrow leaves suggests umm," Kerry tried to think "I'm sorry I can't remember," Kerry said blushing.

"A point to each of you. You're certainly on the right track." He gestured to the first plant. "Celestina's plant here is spread out, and has very narrow leaves, almost like needles. The vines and how it's spread out, as well as the pale coloring indicates that it's spread out to search for sunlight, and hasn't found any. The needle-like leaves indicate that there has been little to no water in its lifetime."
He gestured to the other plant, which was very tall. "This is a little more like what you would find in the desert. It's so tall because it's had a direct source of sunlight, and the needle-like leaves once again indicates that it's had little to no water. And especially in direct sunlight, this is rather a problem."
He walked over and scraped the stalk of each plant with his thumbnail, and each time he ended up with some white, waxy stuff on his fingernail. Holding it up to show the class, he asked, "does anyone know why this would be on these two plants?"

Erikson looked back to the board and sighed. "Now, this isn't really a part of my questioning, but I admit I am curious. Why is there a dunce cap on students, and why does my board talk of... erm... botanical copulation?" He tried to hide his amusement at both things, but he was in a bit too much of a good mood to do it well. He tried to look back to Blaylock for an answer, just to find she'd fallen asleep. He felt bad for springing this on her on such short notice.

Cross-pollinating their plants was fairly simply, but it seemed to be making Bucky terribly uncomfortable. She had gone stone silent and was still that lovely pinkish color that matched her hair. Normally Tag would have enjoyed her discomfort but at this point, he was starting to wonder if she really didn't want to be his partner.
Dangit! Tag looked up, realizing that Professor E was onto him. Meet you at the greenhouse later? Oh, I'm doomed. It was a little awkward, doing that cross-pollination thingy with Bucky while knowing it was actually the same plant. . . what he wanted to know was, what happened when you self-pollinated? He eyed the drunken stem. Maybe it would explode.

Erikson couldn't take any more and laughed, thoroughly amused by both the song and the dunce caps. "I see... and I should have known that last bit was yours, Jasmine." Taking a breath and doing his best to recompose himself and went to the second board and started writing. "I should probably go ahead and give you your homework. I think we've covered all we need to." Quote:

What color were the seeds? There are usually about 15 per stalk. How many of each color did you get? Did you think this was odd, or was this what you expected?
What other things could be done with cross-pollination? How would you use it?
Worth 15 points total, will be graded as a whole.
EC, worth three points: People brought up genetics in class. Considering the rarity of multi-color and true silver seeds, would it be effective to try and get silver seeds from silver plants? What would happen if only silver plants were pollinated?
Once he was done writing, he turned to face them again. "Due by the next class period. By the way, I do realize that I mis-wrote the date for this class, and so some of you did not have your homework ready. You do have until the 14th to turn in the homework for lesson one, since it was my fault you didn't know. Class dismissed."
