Headmistress Cassandra Rae had spent far too much time in her old office, watching the house elves fuss at the babies, and no time at all preparing for class. She was finally ready, though, and she opened her classroom with relish. The windows let in the crisp autumn air, and she settled herself at the desk to await any students.

Ariana put her wand down so she wouldn't do the charm by accident and muttered the word apenbarria a few times to get it right. When she ws confidnet enough she picked up her wand and waited. She felt she could do this, since she had been praticing wand movements with a stick during the summer. She waited patiently for the professor to continue, smiling.

Atmor poited her want at her finger but decideed not to instead she pointed it her parchment and said "Apenbarria" sh remember her father using this one making sure the present her brothers gave him wasn't charmed to explode

Kirilia nervously picked up her wand and tried to copy the professor.
"Apenbarria..." she said quietly, attempting to trill the r as suggested. She practiced just the trilling of the r until she was sure she could insert it into the incantation.
"Apenbarria." she practiced, face screwed up in concentration.

"Ah-pen-bah-ree-uh...Ah-pen-bah-ree-uh..." Cassandra said ovre a few times, she tried to get the trill sound, but she couldn't do it until after twenty tries, "Apenbarria" Yes! I finally got it, but how surprising for me, a first year... She thought.

She looked around and listened, happy that she wasn't the only one who couldn't get the Rs right at first. She smiled at a Ravenclaw girl, who got it right after a lot of tries. It was very exciting to finally get it, well it was to her at least.

"Well, let me preface this by saying that it isn't a good idea to use this spell on a person. Part of the reason is our potential darkness, although the natural influx of magic in witches and wizards contains both light AND dark magic. She circled the desk and rummaged in the drawers for a moment. "This charm, while fairly simple, is actually the basic spell used on the Dark Magic Detectors that are placed all over the school." She brought out a flattened cylinder and set it on her desk. "These detect Dark Magic, both in use and in objects, but they don't detect intent for harm. Paired with a sneakoscope or a Foe Glass, you have all your bases covered." She handed the first DMD to someone in the front row and then passed out a few more to be examined.

Kerry took a dark magic detector and observed it carefully. She had read so much about them but had never actually touched one before. They were fascinating.

Cora took the Dark Magic Detector and looked at it. It doesn't look like a Dark Magic Detector, she thought to herself. Professor, what does it do when it detects Dark Magic?" Cora asked.

Kirilia peered at the dark detector closely. It was strange and interesting. She wondered how it worked.

Rissa curiously gazed at the dark magic detector. "Professor do these detectors have strength levels? I mean, could an extremely powerful Dark wizard/object overcome them?" Rissa paused and then hurriedly added, "Not that these are weak or that I'm doubting your security..."

As soon as the the Dark Magic Detectors went off, Cora covered here ears with her hands. She heard the professor tell her to tap the top and cast Finite incantatem. Cora grabbed her wand, tapped the top of the Dark Magic Detector and said Finite incantatem loudly. The siren on her Dark Magic Detector stopped.

At the sound of the shriek, Kerry covered her ears... at least she knew what to expect if in fact she came in contact with a dark object and used the spell to find out. There was no way she'd miss that sound.

Once the DMD's had all been quieted, Rae lifted the box and carefully tilted it. Inside was an antique ruby broach with thick gold leaves surrounding the jewelled flower. "Part of a matching set, although the earrings have never been found," she said it jokingly, although it was a great mystery at the Ministry.

"I don't want to touch this, as it causes several nasty things to happen, but let me demonstrate the spell for you. Remember that on the quill, the spell seemed to be absorbed straight into it. Apenbarria." The flash of light from her wand hit the broach, and the object seemed to shine with a brief flash of shimmery light. The shine wasn't long, but it was obvious. "Obviously in the DMD's, the spell triggers the siren. Go ahead and practice."

Cora pointed her wand at the broach and casted Apenbarria. Nothing happened. I don't think I rolled my r's correctly she thought to herself. Cora decided to try again. She pointed her wand and said firmly Apenbarria. A light shot from her wand and hit the broach, and just like when the professor did it, the broach glowed for a moment.

Great!! Aurora thought... she had never been able to roll her r's..... she was sure that this was one spell she could never to. She ahd friends from Mexico that had tried to teach her to no avail. <sigh> She She tried anyway " Aaa-Pen-Baaa-Reee- ah!" nothing. well that was about as close as she could get... "Professor, what happens if you cant say if 100% correct?"

"The rolled R is really just to sharpen the effect. You should still get something to happen even without the R."

Jasmine aimed her wand at the broach and said the spell in her head first as her father had taught her. Then she said clearly, Apenbarria! A burst of light left her wand and engulfed the broach. It glowed brightly briefly and then was normal again. Jasmine smiled in relief as she was able to properly say the spell. Her smile soon turned into a thin line of determination however as she thought of her father. She had to do well in this class. He would expect nothing less.

Aurora tried again.... "Apenbarria!" A few sparks came out from the end of her wand.. "It's a new wand. This is the first time i have used it.. Maybe it's not the right one?" Aurora hated it when she couldnt get something the first time. She started to sulk in her seat.

Kennedy held her wand firmly in her right hand in front of her body. She cast the spell "Apenbarria" in a firm, clear voice, being sure to trill her "r" just enough to get the most effect out of this spell. A flash of light exited her wand and hit the broach where it caused a brief sparkling glow and then a fading of the broach back to its normal state.

Kerry reached into her robes and pulled out her wand. Concentrating on the broach as hard as she could and even more so on the incantation, Kerry said "Apenbarria" and was delighted as the word rolled off her tongue, shrill and all. She looked at the broach and was shocked to see it glowing on the first try. Kerry liked this spell ... it was one she was definitely going to remember and test on other objects throughout the school from time to time, hoping to get some interesting results.

Cassandra took out her Maple wood wand. She aimed it at the broach and said clear, in a firm voice, "Apenbarria!" It didn't work, she bit her lip and frowned. After a few more tries, she cleared her throat and said again, in a clearer, firmer voice, trilling the R, she said, "Apenbarria!" Sparks came out of the tip of her wand. She saw that the broach glow for a few moments, then go back to it's original stated. Sighing of relief, she put her wand in front of her in her desk, staring at the broach.
