CoMC #2 - Wizarding & Non-Wizarding Pets As you walk to the Care of Magical Creatures classroom, you realise that Professor Maline has left the door open to the outside, and a medium sized pen is open. There are rather comfortable benches lining the fences, with a desk to lean on in front, and, as you look on the grass, you realise there are toys about. Professor Maline is sat cuddling a kitten, shrowded with butterflies with Perry the spider monkey on her shoulder. She looks up at you from her perch on a chopped log and beams, gesturing for you to take a seat and get comfortable. |
Kennedy entered the CoMC classroom for the second time, feeling very excited about the next lesson. She noticed that the door had been left open to the outside and that Professor Maline was not in the room, so she walked through the door. She greeted Professor Maline with a cheery smile, “Good day ma’am. How are you? If you need any assistance with today’s lesson I would be more than happy to help” and then walked toward the benches by the fence, taking care not to trip over the toys strewn about the ground. She took her seat and began withdrawing a quill, ink, parchment, and her textbook from her satin tote bag. While awaiting the beginning of class, Kennedy took in her beautiful surroundings and smiled. She truly did love the grounds at Hogwarts. |
Marie walks in the CoMC classroom with a huge smile in her face. She was anxious to see what they would study this time. She thought that last time was very fun and since this was her favorite subject, she was very happy to be here. She smile at Professor Maline as she walks toward an empty sit but when she saw the cute kitten that the Professor was cuddling she could resist a shy "Oh!" She loves kitten very much and couldn't resist when she saw one. |
Celestina peeked in first. She just wanted to make sure no one unpleasant was present. Clearing her throat, she brushed her bangs away and walked in, school bag slung over her shoulder. Walking through the open door she wondered where just had everyone had gotten to when she spotted Professor Maline. "Good day Professor," she greeted politely with a small smile. She took a seat and thought the Professor looked quite...ethereal and pretty. As if she had been sucked out of a fairy tale. How odd. Bucky spotted the kitten and wrinkled her nose slightly. She certainly hoped there wouldn't be any hairy slobbering beasts involved. |
Molly happily entered the classroom and took a seat on one of the benches. “Hello, Professor” she said as she put her books on the ground and placed a piece of parchment on her desk. |
Tag traipsed into the outdoor pen and took a seat on one of the benches. He was hoping today would be a hands-on lesson. . . Care of Magical Creatures was his favorite class, but sometimes the lessons were luck of the draw. You never knew if you'd get stuck writing an essay on an animal you'd never seen. Tag preferred up close and personal. He scanned the students who had already arrived. For being my favorite subject, I sure picked something that attracts alot of cooing, cat-loving girls. |
Armand entered the classroom and stood out of the way, hoping to not be noticed. It had occurred to him that he hadn't seen another professor's class before (well, since he was a student himself) and was a little curious. |
Jolie quietly entered the Care of Magical Creatures Classroom, hugging her notebook and quill to her chest. Her gaze softened at the sight of the kittens, Jolie had long been a pet-lover and owned her own orange-colored kitten named Pumpkin. She smiled at the CoMC teacher - Jolie thought her to be very nice-looking, pretty and kind at the same time. "Hi Professor." She said softly, peering around to see if she knew anyone - which basically meant either Kiara or Silos. Seeing neither, Jolie settled herself in a seat near the front she eagerly awaited the start of the lesson. Anything with kittens had to be good. |
Savannah entered the classroom, looking around she quickly noticed a door to outside was open. she headed outside, looking around curiously. Savannah smiled as she saw Professor Maline and afew of her pets sitting, "Hello Professor," She said, smiling as she went and sat down on a bench. "Awww, Thats a cute monkey." she added, pointing to Perry. |
Caitlin slowly entered the Care of Magical Creatures classroom, hugging her sprained wrist against her body tightly and trying not to to hit anything with it. She carefully set her bag down, then looked around, taking in the open door and toys lying about. Her eyes then scattered over to where the Professor was sitting, clutching a kitten. Caitilin nodded at her in recognition, then proceeded to take a seat and unpack her belongings. |
Natalie entered the Care of Magical Creatures lesson, glad that she'd be participating in this lesson. She'd missed the last one and she'd really wanted to see Professor Maline's first lesson. But she shrugged, thinking at least she'd be able to take part in this one. She made her way out to the pen and beamed at Professor Maline. "Good day, Professor!" she greeted then went to take a seat, making herself comfortable, she waited for the Professor to give further instructions. |
She beamed brightly around at everyone, her blonde hair glinting in the sunlight as she watched everybody come in. "Hello everyone!" Ophelia smiled happily, "I think i'll just wait for a while longer for more people" Professor Maline finished as Perry decided to go and make friends with Kennedy and her kitten purred quietly. |
Alicia entered the classroom and noticed that a door leading outside was open. What's this about? she thought to herself and went through the door. Alicia found Professor Maline cuddling with a kitten, and of course with Perry on her sholder. "Hello Professor Maline, Perry," she smiled at both of them and took a seat near the front. |
Evan walked into the classroom and decided to take a seat at the back of the room. He sneered at Caitlin and poked her on the head as he walked by her. Honestly, she could have found a more original excuse if she didn't want to play on the Quidditch team. Grinning mischieviously, he sat down at the desk behind hers. |
Kennedy had been staring up into the clouds when she felt something suddenly crawling on her lap. Startled, Kennedy looked down in a panic, but relaxed when she realized it was only Perry, Professor Maline's spider monkey. Amused by his making a home in her lap, Kennedy said jokingly "Is that comfortable?" In response, Perry wrapped his disproportionately long limbs around her waist and neck and nodded his head fervently. Kennedy let out a laugh and said "You're amazingly intelligent!" Perry nodded again, which caused Kennedy to laugh even harder. WIth a smile, kennedy told Perry, "Stay as long as you like!" and smiled at Professor Maline. |
Aurora walked in to the class thrilled to be there. "Good day Professor Maline! Hope you are well." Aurora saw Kennedy already there and took a seat next to her. She pulled out her notebook and quill. she was hopin they would get to play with the kitten. She so missed her fat cat at home. Hopefully Stormy wouldnt pick now to pop in. |
"Ok," She said, and sat up slightly on her log perch, "I've got a kitten, any clue as to why?" |
Savannah raised her hand, "Umm, Are we going to be taking care of kittens today?" |
"Perhaps because we are going to discuss Muggle pets and how to distinguish them from wizarding ones, such as a Kneazle in this case." Kennedy suggested. |
Jolie raised her hand. "Because we're going to learn about kittens and you thought it would be nice to have an example." She said, adoring the cute kitten the professor held. |
Caitlin turned and glared at Evan as he walked by. He didn't understand at all, the prat. Her wrist was sprained, and her parents didn't believe in using magic to heal wounds and whatnot. Caitlin wanted to play Quidditch more than she wanted to ever graduate school. Part of her wanted to hate Evan - he didn't even like Hufflepuff - but she knew he was just upset, because last year, it was her and Evy rocked the team. He was just afraid of how they'd perform without her. Poor kid. |

"I have no idea," replied Bucky squinting at the feline. "How do you distinguish them? By just looks I mean." |
"A Kneazle?" Caitlin asked, shrugging. It couldn't hurt to guess. |
"She looks like a normal kitten to me. I don't see the flecked or speckled fur, outsized ears, or a tail like a lion's. Although, I'm not quite sure if young Kneazles have such characteristics at birth so she may very well be a Kneazle for all I know!" Kennedy said with a light laugh. Kennedy then added, "Although, it is also possible that I just can't see her coat clearly enough to distinguish any spots! So I guess I just don't know!" |
"A muggle cat?"Herlucy said guessing. |
Torie raised her hand. "I..*achoo* think *achoo* it is a normal *achoo* cat, since I seem to be allergic to it." said Torie amist a flurry of sneezes. She took a handkerchief out of her jumper pocket and blew her nose loudly. "Sorry Professor." |
Who cares, Evan thought moodily. The boy stifled a yawn and shifted in his seat. He glared at Caitlin as she spoke; the girl had clearly took a wild guess and had no idea what she was talking about. How lame. He sneered, then raised his hand. "Shouldn't we conduct a few experiments on it to tell if this creature is more intelligent than a normal cat?" Not that he cared about it. |
"You don't need to conduct experiments," Caitlin snorted at Evan, spinning around to face him. "Kneazles are very intelligent. If they really like someone, they'll stick by their side ... however, if they don't, they'll don't react very well at all. They also have large ears, spots on their fur, and tails that can compare to a lions. I said Kneazle because this cat seems to be very taken with our Professor." She took in a deep breath and glared and him, muttering the word "experiments," sarcastically underneath her breath, amazed at his stupidity. |
Armand raised a brow at Evan's question, though held his tongue. He made a note to speak to the boy later. |

"Feel free to play with them by the way!" Ophelia smiled, "They need some love and excersize. "For two points, give me an opinion on what would happen if a muggle had a kneazle for a pet," She then asked the class. |
"Well, personally, I think that a Kneazle would act just the same to a Muggle as to a Wizard. I'm sure that it can detect the suspicious Wizards as well as the Muggles. For all we know, loads of Muggles could own a Kneazle and not even really know ..." Caitlin wandered off into thought. Anything could be possible. |
"Well, the Kneazle can be occasionally aggressive, especially around people they do not trust. I suspect that a Kneazle may have difficulty trusting non-magical folk because they don't know what to make of their unusual Muggle ways. By unusual, I mean unusual to them who are probably more accustomed to magical life with wizards and witches. The aggression that they may have can be very dangerous for the Muggle who tries to adopt this animal as a pet." |
Kay raised her hand tenativly and said, "Um, perhaps they would be shocked at the intelligence of their pet?" She didn't know very much about animals as they made her rather nervous, but she was ready to try and get some points for her house. She sat back towards the edge of the pen and allowed the others to play with the kneazle kittens. |
Well, that was embarrassing. Clearing her throat she busied herself with the ends of her hair. She needed a trim badly. Speaking of hair...There he was. That annoyingly handsome Hufflepuff. Focus! Right. Everyone was so clever. How did they do it? Celestina wondered why she even bothered going to lessons. She was horrid at answering question and actually acquiring points for her answers. Searching her bag for a random piece of parchment she threw casual glances at Evan wondering why in the world of wizards and witches his hair was oh just so pretty. |
Jolie raised her hand. "Kneazles are very intelligent animals, and I think it would be able to distinguish the difference between a Muggle owner and a Wizard owner. But I don't think very many Muggle's could tell if their cat was a Kneazle, as they don't know they exist. They would probably just think there cat was very smart, which, I expect, many would want or presume." She said, hoping her guess was sometime close to the truth. Jolie leaned down and patted the kneazle's head. She was so cute, very much like her own cat - although Jolie thought all kittens and kneazles adorable. |
Kerry raised her hand, "I agree that the muggles would not realize if their cats were kneazles, the only difference that they might see is that their cat is unusually attached and seems extremely bright - seeking out the differences between people they trust and enemies and such. I would question more why a kneazle would choose to live with a muggle family who have no knowledge of such hidden abilities... it's almost as though the kneazle has picked something up special about the family to stay with them." |

"OK, so you all know about fleas and lice yes? Well Wizarding creatures get them too, but it's got a different name, anyone know it?" She asked. |
"Would that be a chizpurfle ma'am?" Kennedy replied. |
Tag raised his hand. "Chizpurfles infest the fur of crups," he volunteered. This one he knew from first-hand experience. He itched his forearm absentmindedly. |
"No idea," Caitlin said to herself, shaking her head. Fleas were bad enough - who knew that wizard pets had a whole nother set of bugs to deal with? |
Sebastian rose his hand. "Is it possible for wood lice to be an irritant to a magical animal?" |
Savannah raised her hand, "Umm, lacewinged fly's?" She asked, She didn't remember reading about them bugging animals, but she figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. |
Celestina chuckled at Tag. He would know a thing or two about magical animals. |
"what about a Billywig, Professor Maline? Or maybe a Chizpurfle? They are small as well." Aurora was hoping she was in the right area |

"Crups were mentioned earlier, and there is one very obvious difference physically between a crup, and a normal muggle dog, what is it?" She asked the class, allowing a few crups and puppies to escape from her class room and play about in the field. |
"Crups have a forked tail." Kennedy answered. |
Kerry raised her hands, "The crup looks like a muggle Jack Russel Terrier I believe, except for the fact it has a forked tail" |
Caitlin laughed. she knew this answer easily, because she'd adopted a Crup last term. She raised her hand. "A Crup has a forked tail!" |
" Crups have a forked tail while muggle dogs' tails are usually fluffy. They are loyal to magical folk and can turn mean against muggles." Aurora hoped she would get one right today. |
Jolie wrinkled her nose. It was bad enough that there was regular lice but the fact that there was a whole other breed of lice for wizarding creatures? Jolie found that a bit disgusting.. hey she was a girl after all. She raised her hand. "Crup's strongly resemble Jack Russel Terriors except for their forked tails." Jolie answered. |
"The crup is different from the muggle animal, the dog, as a crup has a forked tail," Sebastian explained in a difficult manner. |

Jolie raised her hand again. "Although Crups are very friendly towards wizards and witches they are fericious towards muggles." |
"Crups are ferocious toward Muggles because they are a wizard-created dog." Kennedy answered. |
"As I said before, Crups can turn evil towards muggles. It would be dangeroud to have them as a pet." |
Kerry raised her hands, "The crup is very loyal to witches and wizards but is aggressive towards muggles, which can be very scary for them. Not only that, but the fact that they will eat almost anything in sight can also frighten any muggle who is lucky enough to get near them without being attacked." |
Si looked around at the other students the consensus what crups are fine to wizards but not to muggles, he noted this down on his parchment, he didn’t know all this information about how magical animals interact differently with muggles |
Kat thought it was amazing how these animals kneew if you were a witch or wizard or not. She thought of her muggle family and friends back home and a shiver ran down her spine. "Do many crups ever get neav muggles?" She hated the thought of one of her animal loveing sisters finding a crup and thinking it was a friendly dog even though they would think it to have a deformed tail . |

Aurora thougt for a minute.." A nogtail and a muggle swine?" It seemed like a good match. to her. |
Well I doubt you have an Erumpent, which resembles a rhinoceros at a distance, considering its size. So my guess would be a fire crab which resembles a turtoise with exception of its jeweled shell? Ormaybe a jarvey because they rsemble ferrets." Kennedy suggested. |
Torie raised her hand. "Is it a snake? Some muggles have snakes as pets and they might mistake a magical snake, such as a boomslang for a muggle pet snake." |
Kerry raised her hand, "Professor are they puffeskeins or pygymy puffs?" |
Kennedy then added, "Or you could have a knarl, which resembles a hedgehog except for one behavioural difference regarding food and gardens." |
How about a Knarl which looks like a hedgehog? |
"A jarvey and a ferret?" suggested Patrick. |
Do we really care? Evan thought. This lesson was really a waste of time; kitties and hedgehogs just weren't his thing. Evan raised his finger slowly and said mockingly: "A woodlouse and a zebra?" Why not. He then glared at Bucky and stuck out his tongue at her. Why did she have to keep staring at him? |
"or how about a Fire crab and a Tortoise? That would be fun" Aurora was trying to thin of the muggle animals her Grammy has. |

"If food is left out in the garden for a knarl, he will assume the householder is attempting to lure it into a trap and will savage that householder's garden plants or garden ornaments." Kennedy answered. |
Kerry blushed, forgetting that they were looking for muggle animals, too. But she raised her hand anyway and said, "Oooh professor knarls love to go after gardens, so owners of this pet must beware!!" |
Aurora raised her hand, " They like garden vegtables. Probably cabbages and carrots, right?' |
Torie raised her hand. "It really likes garden plants so things like vegetables or maybe flowers?" She asked with a question in her voice. As she was speaking, a puppy came and wandered into her lap. Happily she bent down and picked it up. She petted it gently as she waited for a response from the Professor. |
Celestina scowled and took down notes. So much for having pretty hair if your head was empty. What a jerk. She didn't know about knarls and food but she did know they liked shiny stuff. A lot. |
"Well I know that if someone tries to feed it it thinks they are trying to trap it and they go nuts." Kat wasn't sure if this was the right answer but she tried |
"Milk," said Patrick confident this time. |
As Kennedy was waiting for Professor Maline to continue the lesson, she heard a soft snoring noise coming from her lap. She looked down and noticed that Perry was fast asleep and snoring progressively louder! She looked to Professor Maline and said, "I swear it's not me that is snoring. I'm quite awake and enjoying the lesson. This guy on the other hand" Kennedy looked adoringly at Perry, "I can't speak for him." Kennedy laughed lightly. |
Aurora looked over at her friend with a quizacle look. The was wondering why there was snoring coming from her lap... then she realized it was Perry and Aurora started to giggle. |
Evan looked around the classroom, getting more annoyed by the second. He abruptly grabbed a young knarl that was sniffing his foot and held it in his arms. Noticing that Bucky was slightly angry at him, he seized one of the creature's front leg and waved it in her direction, grinning insanely. |

"Oh dear." Professor Maline exclaimed. |
Megan gasped as she saw the knarl panic. "How can you help it Professor?" |
Kerry glared at Professor Maline... she swore she did this to drive her insane, as she quickly jumped up on her seat, as the angry knarl made it's way towards her... "Ummm, professor," Kerry said as she stood there... "Now that it's ticked off, what would you suggest I do to calm it down so it doesn't attack me?" Kerry asked wondering why her and why two magical creature classes in a row now that she's been attacked by creatures. She had always thought creatures liked her. Kerry was having second thoughts about that as the knarl tried to nip her feet. |
Dinara squealed as the knarl started hissing. "Oh Professor, what can we do?" She thought for a moment and said, "Isn't there some sort of spell to dry it off?" |
"I'll get it!," Tag volunteered, jumping up from his seat. He was bored from all the easy talk and this was the perfect diversion. Tag leapt after the small spiny animal, accidentally knocking over one of the cages along the way. The knarl darted between the legs of the students in full-fledged panic. "Whoops! Sorry. . . lookout!" |

She was busy scribbling notes furiously. There was not one thing she knew about magical creatures. Her fingers were stained with ink and just as she looked up to nod to the Professor indicating she was following her she spotted Evan...what was he doing? Confusion was etched all over her face. He was nuts. Bucky feared for the knarls life and wasn't he glaring at her minutes ago? Someone had issues. Rolling her eyes at the Hufflepuff Captain, she turned her attention to the Professor and wondered why Tag was so silent. As if on cue. All hell broke lose. A knarl escaped and Tag was after it. She brought her legs up and wrapped her skirt around her legs. Just in case. "Get it Tag! Get it!" |
Aurora picked up her wand and pointed it at the knarl and spoke "Stupefy!" She hoped it would only stunn it so Professor Maline could retrieve it. |
In a moment of panic, Dinara squealed again and jumped up on her chair. In the confusion, she jumped a bit sideways and knocked her friend Kerry off of her chair. She didn't even realized it until she heard Kerry hit the floor with a thud. Dinara panicked even more and reached down to pull Kerry back up onto the chair. |
Tag considered his pursuit (and the increased interestingness of the lesson) coming along nicely when suddenly one of the students pulled a wand and sent red sparks at the tiny animal. Luckily, her aim was terrible, but that also meant she nearly hit Tag, who was hot on its heels. "Hey! Don't do that! You'll kill it!" Tag yelled. Forget that she'd nearly blasted his leg. |
Just as Aurora yelled 'Stupify', Kennedy called out 'Immobulus!" to stop it from attacking the Gryffindor prefect without actually hurting the creature. |
"Oh dear! I'm so sorry! It was a complete accident! I didn't mean to pour the milk on them! The milk was for an experiment to tell them apart!" Ophelia exclaimed, watching Tag chase after the knarl creating more havoc in his bearth, "quickly! There's no way to calm them down i'm afraid, they just need to run themselves out!" |
Kerry was so busy watching the knarl that she didn't even notice Dinara in a panic next to her. All of a sudden, Kerry felt an elbow to the head and the next thing she knew, she landed face first on the floor with a huge thud. Kerry could feel a warm liquid coming from her nose and realized she had a lovely nose bleed - thanks to her clumsy friend. Kerry only hoped the stupify she heard from across the room worked and the knarl didn't attack her while she was down. Even more, she hoped that the blood didn't fuel the knarl's anger even further, that's all she needed as she began to pull herself up again. As she did, she noticed Dinara's hand reaching out to help her up. She went to grab it and as she did, she noticed the knarl in a rage near her face... in a panic she pulled Dinara down in front of her for protection. |
Quote:
Aurora was only trying to help. Now she felt bad about trying. She wouldnt move a muscle until the end of class... only to answer questions. |
Ophelia shrieked as spells were thrown and as Kerry found herself with a bloody nose, Professor Maline rushed over, "Episky!" She exclaimed and flicked her wand once, waiting for the madness to stop, but hey, this was fun. |
Dinara landed roughly on top of Kerry. She hit her head on the chair. She was suddenly woozy, but she didn't care as long as she was out of the way of the knarl. She huddled close to Kerry and screamed, "How much longer until it runs out of energy?" |
Megan sat stock still in her chair with her quill in her hand and her month wide open. 'This is definately one interesting class!' She thought to herself as she watched everyone run around. |
Bucky let out a yelp as a spell flew over head, missing her by centimeters. She didn't know whether to run away or crawl underneath....something. Not there was anything to crawl underneath or pull out her own wand and start hexing people. "Someone catch the silly creature already!" She exclaimed, arms over head as if that would save her from being blown into oblivion. |
"I HAVE A PLAN!" Ophelia bellowed, "Get any creature in a cage!" She yelled, pulling on her gloves, and running towards a crup to pick it up and put it in the class room. |
Armand did his best to keep out of the way of the flying spells, but avoiding the knarl had been another matter, and he had a feeling that he was no longer obfuscated. He just jumped out of the way of the knarl when one of the flying spells (not that he could tell which one) hit the little critter and stopped it. "Well, that was different..." |
