| | Magical Drafts and Potions ooc: This is an incomplete list of potions and their brewing instructions that have been taught in the potions class on SnitchSeeker.com. These potions were compiled and created by Biochemkris and the information used came from the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, Cunningham’s Guide to Magical Herbs, various websites, and the imaginations of Biochemkris and her characters’ students.
Over the course of many terms teaching in the SS Hogwarts School RPG I’ve accumulated a lot of notes. My intention in ‘publishing’ this ‘textbook’ is not to overwhelm or discourage you in your study of potions but, to aid you. It also helps me when planning out lessons to have a reference of what I’ve already taught, said, and done in order to avoid contradicting myself.
The potions are arranged by date taught and the lesson numbers correlate to my terms teaching, not the start of the SnitchSeeker Hogwarts RPG. However, I have headed each post with the appropriate SS Hogwarts Term number. |

| Term 5: Professor Kris Airlia, Ravenclaw House Ghost Technically technical all the time Bookaholic Basic Sleeping Draft (Lesson 1.2) Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* lavender (a pinch; crushed)
* chamomile (a handful; crushed)
* for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
* for more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch) Instructions:
* Bring water to a slow boil.
* Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
* Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
* For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
* For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise Notes:
*Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly. Wit-Sharpening Potion (Lesson 1.3) Use/Effect:
The Wit-Sharpening Potion is used to aid in concentration. It is especially useful if taken before an important exam. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* scarab beetles (coarsely ground; 2)
* ginger root (cut; 5g)
* armadillo bile (9 drops) Instructions:
* Bring water to a delicate simmer
* Add scarab beetles and stir 5 times, clockwise
* Allow to simmer for 5 minutes
* Add ginger without stirring and simmer for 20 minutes
* Allow solution to cool, stirring 7 times every 3 minutes, alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise stirrings
* When heat can no longer be felt when a hand is placed above the potion, add armadillo bile
* Allow potion to sit for 8 minutes (potion will smell foul) Notes:
* This potion is sensitive to temperature so be sure to pay particular attention to the fire while brewing.
* In order to make the potion taste more pleasant, put a peppermint leaf upon the tongue and then, sip the potion. However, do not put the peppermint in the potion itself as steeping peppermint in the potion could alter the properties of the potion.
*Depending upon the brewing, one should feel the effects of the potion within 10 minutes, though it can take up to one hour. Confounding (Confusing) Concoction: mild formulation
(Lesson 1.4) Use/Effect:
There aren’t many, if any, good uses for this potion, though it is not illegal. It could be used on prisoners or enemies but, as it has unpredictable effects, it is not recommended for such purposes. The confusing concoction is usually studied merely for honing brewing technique or to ensure proper brewing of the antidote. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* jobberknoll feathers (2 barbs)
* leeches (juiced; 1-2) Instructions:
* Bring water to a boil
* Separate the barbs from the shafts of 2 jobberknoll feathers
* Place barbs in boiling water and stir 12 times clockwise and 7 times counter-clockwise
* Boil for 30 minutes
* Add leech juice by squeezing one leech into the cauldron and stir in an unpredictable fashion
* Keep stirring until potion should thickens (within 5 minutes)
* If potion does not thicken after 10 minutes of stirring, add another leech and continue to stir unpredictably until thickened
* If potion has still not thickened after an additional 10 minutes, start another brew Notes:
* This particular brew is a mild variation of the Confounding Concoction but, should be effective for several hours if an antidote is not administered.
* It can be very difficult to discern whether one has ingested confounding concoction. Depending upon how strongly it is brewed and the person it is administered to, a person may only show a tendency to forget things and the effects will wear off in a few hours. Or, with a stronger version, a person can become completely confused and disoriented and could possibly suffer from amnesia.
* There are no discerning smells or tastes so this potion can be easily disguised and given to the unwary.
* One side effect of this potion is an increased thirst.
* People under the effects of the confounding concoction can be very unpredictable. Antidote for the Confounding Concoction
(Lesson 1.5) Use/Effect:
As the name implies, the antidote for the confounding concoction is a potion which counteracts the effects of the confounding concoction. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* jobberknoll feathers (2 shafts)
* galangal (powdered; 5g)
* leeches (dried, broken up; 1) Instructions:
* Bring water to a boil
* Add jobberknoll feather shafts and boil for 10 minutes with constant clockwise stirring
* Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and emoty into cauldron
* Stir vigorously for 5 minutes counter-clockwise
* Simmer for 15 minutes
* Stir dried leech into potion (direction is not important)
* Stir continually for 2 minutes
* Remove from heat and allow to cool before ingesting Notes:
* You won’t be able to break the dried leeches up evenly but, it will not effect the potions efficacy.

| Term 6: Professor Kris Airlia, Slytherin Head of House Technically technical all the time Bookaholic Hair-changing Potion: mild formulation (Young Aurors Club Term 2) Use/Effect:
The mild formulation of the Hair-Changing Potion is used to alter the coloration of a person’s hair. Ingredients:
* water (500 mL)
* belladonna (2 g; crushed)
* nettles (5 g; dried, powdered)
* moonstone Instructions:
* place moonstone in cauldron and add water
* boil water for 5 minutes
* add belladonna and nettles
* boil for 5 minutes
* reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
* stir, 20 full strokes clockwise followed by 20 full strokes counter-clockwise
* place the clear potion in a goblet
* dip the very tip of wand in potion and incant, "Coloro!" while concentrating on the color you want the hair
* rinse hair in 200 mL of potion
* wait 5 minutes for color change Notes:
* Belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade) is highly poisonous and this potion should not be ingested.
* Remaining potion should be used within 24 hours.
* Hair color will remain for 24-48 hours.
* Moonstone may be reused. Deflating Draft (Lesson 2.1) Use/Effect:
The deflating draft is the antidote for the swelling solution. It decreases swelling and size. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* wood sorrel (whole; a handful)
* sagebrush (whole; a handful)
* aloe (fresh; 10 drops)
* galangal (powdered; 5g) Instructions:
* Bring water to a boil
* Add wood sorrel and sagebrush. Do not stir but, ensure that they are completely submerged and boil for 10 minutes.
* Lower temperature to simmer and add freshly squeezed aloe.
* Allow to simmer but, for no more than one hour without stirring.
* Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and empty into cauldron.
* Stir vigorously for 5 minutes, counter-clockwise.
* Take cauldron off fire to cool Notes:
* This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested. Swelling Solution (Lesson 2.2) Use/Effect:
The swelling solution causes objects or parts of objects to swell and enlarge. However, it does not work on non-living things. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* houndstongue (ground; 0.5g)
* ginger (roots, thinly sliced; 5g)
* lionfish quills (whole; 3)
* rattlesnake fang (crushed; 1)
* dragon saliva (1 drop) Instructions:
* Bring water to a slow boil in a pewter cauldron.
* Add houndstongue and stir 22 times in a steady clockwise motion.
* Add lionfish quills but, do not stir.
* Allow solution to slowly boil and after about 5 minutes, the solution should be a dull yellow.
* Add dragon saliva. It will remain on the surface for a few minutes. Wait for it to sink before adding the next ingredient.
* Crush the rattlesnake fang and mix with ground ginger before adding them to the potion. Stir clockwise for 2 minutes.
* Remove from the fire and continue to stir for an additional 10 minutes. Notes:
* This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested.
* The swelling solution is not like the engorgement charm. It is an irritant, not just a swelling in size.
* Where ever this potion contacts the skin it will cause swelling. Anti-Love (Delusting) Potion (Lessons 2.3 & 2.4) Use/Effect:
Used to counteract the effects of most love potions. Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* essence of violet (5 drops)
* essence of rose thorn (7 drops)
* raven feathers (2)
* skinkroot (slices, translucently thin; 20)
* rat eyes (3) Instructions:
* bring 500mL water to a boil
* add 5 drops essence of violet and stir 5 times, clockwise
* add 7 drops essence of rose thorn and stir 7 times, counter-clockwise
* reduce heat to simmer mixture for 10 minutes, stirring 2 times, counter-clockwise every minute
* add 2 raven feathers and boil for 5 minutes while stirring clockwise
(stopping point: remove cauldron from heat and cover, mixture will be viable for up to one month. When restarting to brew, slowly bring the mixture back up to a boil before continuing.)
* add 20 translucently thin slices of skinkroot and simmer for 10 minutes or until potion turns pink
* add 3 rat eyes
* remove from heat and stir until black streaks appear
