Rae sighed and pointed at where the words appeared. "This room is sealed and spelled in so many ways... isn't that proof enough that things aren't as safe as we assume?" She gathered her belongings and gave both Lainey and Doyle a look that asked for their assistance. "Meeting is adjourned." |
Doyle collapsed into his favorite chair by the fire and blew his nose for the umpteenth time that day. It was his first forray out of his quarters in days. Nothing seemed to help so, he decided to get out of bed for a while. |
Rae peeked into the staffroom and waved a finger at Doyle. "Feeling better? I need to chat with you... can I get you a cup of tea and bounce something off you?" It had been hard to catch him in their quarters lately, especially considering how he was feeling lately. |
"Not particularly," he said, waving his wand at his hankerchief to clean it before blowing his nose again and repeating the cleaning so he could set it down. He dind't bother pocketting it. "But, a cup of tea would be lovely and I am always willing to be your sounding board." |
She came in and settled on the couch, folding her hands neatly in her lap. She looked at him for a long moment before saying, "Lainey has been accused of being a mole for Voldemortist, my Dark Magic Detector didn't go off, and I can't find the Book." Taking a deep breath, Rae smiled slightly and added, "And I love you." |
"Anjelica Lainey?" he asked, completely shocked. "Surely not. Who made the accussation? Is there any proof? I don't particularly care for her but, I know of her reputation and that you hold her in the highest regard." |
"Okay good... that's what I think too. So let's move on. Lainey is falsely accused, but... the DMD and the Book. The Book, Doyle!" She fidgeted. |
Doyle took deep breath and let it out slowly. Unfortunately, intead of calming him and quieting his mind, it just brought on a coughing fit. When he felt better, he shook his head. "It was just taken from your office without the DMD going off? Do you have any idea who had access that could have hoodwinked the DMD? Or who might have had good intentions? Or perhaps it was just misplaced?" THe latter being unlikely, though obviously preferred. |
"This is waht I'm trying to tell you... nothing that has happened over the past term has made the detector go off. And really, no one could just wander in and take the book. I hid it, spelled it, took care of all of the planning." She put her hand to her head. "You wouldn't... have you heard anything about the book at the Ministry?" |
"I've heard quite a lot of things about the Book at the Ministry. I've already told you that I was doing research on it for part of my time there," he replied in a distant voice as he thought about what she had said and what he knew of The Book. |
"New things," Rae prompted. "Maybe someone's heard something... turned it over to them?" She didn't want to ASK him if he'd taken it to the Ministry, especially since Lainey had taken her questions before so badly. |
Doyle smiled indulgently at his wife and took hold of her hand. "I didn't take The Book. I meant it when I said that I would allow you to decide what to do with it. Now, I know I was in Slytherin and we're known for our cunning but, I would never lie to you, Cassandra," he explained before having to drop her hand as he made a mad rech for his hankerchief and sneezed. "I also know that I don't seem as worried or upset as I should be and part of that is because I'm still feeling rather miserable and it is always difficult to get overly excited about other things in such a state. However, I believe you may be underestimating The Book itself. You decided to destroy it, didn't you?" |
She moved to sit next to him on the couch, putting her head on his shoulder. "I was going to, but Lainey wanted to look at it first. You think the Book took it upon itself to protect itself? I've never heard that it had that ability, but I suppose it's possible." |
He smiled and placed his hand on her leg. "I never had the opportunity to study the Book itself and I do not know of anyone who performed a test but, it is a distinct possibility that it does possess such an ability. If the Book contains the most powerful and dangerous of spells why has it been passed from hiding place to hiding place all these years rather than destroyed? I can't think the Ministry would have allowed it to remain in existance if it could have been destroyed after any possibly useful spells were retrieved from it," Dole explained. |
Rae considered it. "How do we get it to come back? It can't just... hide for the rest of eternity." |
"I don't know," he sighed then, sneezed. "I could be wrong about the Book having disappeared on its own, too... Not that I am accusing yoru friend but, she didn't take it with her or do anything to it when she looked at it?" |
"It wasn't there when I tried to get it for her to look at," Rae sighed and made a face as he sneezed in her ear. "She got very upset when I even so much as hinted that she might have wanted to take teh book. She's acting so oddly these days." |
"I'm afraid I'm at a loss," he sighed, incredibly frustrated with his cold and the situation. He did not enjoy feeling that things were out of control. "I'd be loathe to suggest you inform the staff and begin a search but, I don't what else to suggest. Although, I suppose it can't hurt to inform your office at large that you no longer wish to destroy the Book and see what happens." |
"I never told my office that I wanted to destroy the book," Rae smiled at the way that sounded. "I told the staff elsewhere in teh school. Surely the book is clever enough to know that I still intend to destroy it." She peered up at him. "Have you been to Ariana about that cold?" |
"I was hoping it would just go away. I took some pepper-up but, it didn't seem to help much. I suppose I'm not healer and should take a trip to see her, especially since I need to teach and I've been unable to clear it up on my own for several days," he sighed. "I don't know what to do about that book." |
"I don't want to kiss you until you see Ariana, and I'm pretty sure one of us is sleeping in another room tonight with the way the congestion makes you snore." She grinned good-naturedly before rising. "I have to get ready for class. Please go see Ariana." |
"If you insist," he said, getting up, loathe to spend a night alone after having spent nearly a year with his wife. "And good luck with everything. Hopefully I'll be feeling better tonight. If not, I'll see what she has which might at least curb the snoring." |
