If you've made it past the gargoyle, all that stands between you and the Headmistress is a solid wood door. On the other side of the door is a high ceilinged room with a desk at the far end. The walls are stacked with innumerable portraits, although they all appear to be sleeping deeply or otherwise engaged. The shelves and tables are lined with strange objects, some that seem almost familiar to you, and even a few you are certain are mutated Dark Magic Detectors. A low row of pictures line a bookshelf otherwise filled with various texts, and each features the same blond woman waving happily with some other person.

Behind the desk sits a woman deep in thought. Her honey-colored hair is braided and coiled around her head like a crown. She is wearing dark blue robes with flowers embroidered along the hems and neckline. Overall, she gives off quite a solemn appearance, until a sound from you catches her attention. When she looks at you, you realize her eyes are full of laughter and a smile plays around her lips. "What can I help you with today?"

ooc: Do NOT, under fear of punishment and of me giggling and pointing at you... do NOT post in this thread unless you have the password legitimately. Also... the Gargoyle thread may be used as a sort of waiting area for the Headmistress.

"The only way I can allow you to remain at the school without being locked up every full moon will be if you agree to take the potion," Rae wrote a quick note to her husband before looking back at the girl. "I'm afraid a refusal will mean you can't stay here. I won't risk the others."

Lainey used her fist to beat on Rae's door. "Rae, it's me. You busy?" She called out. She took the moment to smooth her stringy hair back and press out the wrinkles in her sleeves.

"Consider what I've said, my dear, and let me know your decision immediately. I'll expect a visit from you or an owl no later than next week," she rose and let the girl escape around Lainey. "Yes, Anj? I can make time for you." She smoothed her hair back from her face.

"Julia and Jamie were just in my office, worried sick, because they think I'm going to die or leave. They heard this from that dratted Samea. Do you know anything about this?" Lainey asked shortly, still ill with Rae over the Staff meeting and the lack of faith given to her.

"If you aren't going to die or leave, then it doesn't matter what rumors Samea is starting," Rae's brow creased and she studied her friend closely. "Why are you concerned with Samea's newest range of lies, Anj? Did you tell Julia and Jamie that it wasn't true?"

"Well of course I did, but it doesn't make me feel any better. If you'd take time and come talk to me every once in a while, maybe you'd know more about it...," Lainey trailed off. She took a deep breath and tried to remember that Rae was her best, in not only, friend in the world. "You know I came from the Book. You're destroying the Book. Have you said that out loud so Samea could have overheard and filled in the holes herself?"

Rae sank back in her chair, confusion coloring her expression. "How can I come and talk to you when everytime we're together you're uptight about Doyle or jumping all over me?" She shook her head. "I didn't say anything around Samea that I didn't say around the rest of the staff. I... I wouldn't destroy it if I thought you were in danger."

"Well if you'd stay away from the husband, who hates me might I add, you'd know why I'm so short wicked this term! Or why I'm over nervous and anxious! Merlin, Rae. He found me this summer in Diageon Alley." Lainey spoke very clearly, and very calmly surprisingly enough. Her eyes were fixed somewhere between Rae's left ear and the wall.

It was completely irrational of Anj to ask Rae to stay away from her husband, but she pushed past that. "You're saying that Voldemortist walked up to you in Diagon Alley? Did he hurt you? What happened?" Lainey seemed far too calm about the whole situation.

"We talked. He picked up my bags and ...," Lainey had to laugh. She was about to say he almost hugged her. He had been awful close. "He just talked. He still wants the Book, but he said he had no interest in harming anyone for it. I think we should try to contact him, Rae. See if we can strike a deal with him We'll keep the Book, he can have something he wants, and we all live happily ever after." That was easy enough, Lainey thought. He'd been very rational after all, in a power-hungry slightly off balanced way. "He thanked me for my curriculum about him from last term."

"I can't believe he didn't hurt you, Anj. You could have been killed," Rae stared at her best friend, feeling fear for the first time. "You believe him? Would you believe that he would just leave us alone and stop killing students if you didn't have a vested interest in that Book?"

"Yeah, I do believe him," Lainey confessed, though it was obvious she was worried about her own judgement from her tone. "Something about him. I think he was telling the truth. And, I don't know why he didn't kill me. It was before the papers even reported him missing....," Lainey finally made eye contact with her friend. "You can't tell anyone though. I'm still an Auror in my book, and if they knew I didn't capture when I had the chance, plus the other things already on my record - " Lainey left the end of her sentence open for interpretation. "You think I'm crazy, don't you?"

"No," Rae shook her head but didnt' sound totally convinced. "I think he's up to something, and I don't believe him. He wants that book, and nothing we offer him will change that. The spell would say if it wasn't permanent. You're not going to die!"

"How do you know what it says, Rae? Have you looked inside?" Lainey raised both her eyebrows high. "I've barely even seen the Book, let alone been allowed to read it...." Lainey sighed, and was just about ready to go. Rae had changed and the 'reckless chance taking go with your heart Rae' was no longer around.

"I've examined it," Rae said, sticking her chin out stubbornly. "I'd let you examine it too if you asked. You haven't. Don't treat me like I'm keeping secrets, Lainey, when you're the one who has a problem with ME." She gripped the arms of the chair. "You want to look at it?"

Lainey had asked to see the Book when they found it. She'd made a special trip the previous term just for that. "No, Cassandra," Lainey retorted for her calling her Lainey, "I trust you. If you say it doesn't put me in harm, then so be it. I don't need anything other than your word." Now, if the same were only granted to her. Besides, Lainey was sure Rae probably had more important things to do with her husband. "That is all I wanted," Lainey stood, preparing to leave.

"You're welcome to examine the Book anytime you want," Rae responded off-handedly, stung by Lainey's tone and the use of her full name. "I give you my word that I wouldn't risk you for the world, but I'd like to put your mind at ease on the issue. Perhaps you can come see me again after you have some time to settle your emotions."

Lainey hung her head as she left. "Yeah Rae, that's what I'll do, go settle my emotion." She sighed loudly as she descended the stairs and headed towards the owlery.

The office is empty, but lots of clashing and banging is heard from the outside. Upon entry, you can see that books are strewn about the room, papers are everywhere. The portraits that hang on the walls are all stunned still and the room is completely wrecked.

Professor Rae's desk is completely trashed. Her papers are crumpled up to the side of the desk and every drawer is opened. All of her books have been moved around and looked through. Someone was clearly looking for something. Nothing, however, is missing from the office.

Arriving slightly out breath, Bucky took the liberty of being the one to knock this time. Using perhaps a bit more force than necessary, Celestina banged on the Headmistress' door.

"Professor?" She called out, the other hand still grasping her only weapon, her wand. "Professor Rae, we need to have a word with you. It's urgent. Professor Virohsa sent us," she added as an afterthought, just in case the Headmistress was afraid of pesky students.

This time Bucky beat Jen to the punch, literally pounding on the door. Her hand was in her pocket loosely gripping her wand just in case she should need to defend herself. After what had happened in the common room she had no idea what to expect here.

Rae pushed open the door to her office and gasped at the destructions. "Oh my goodness! You two... are you responsible for this mess?" She pointed at Bucky and Jen. Caught in the act!

Kay peered around Rae to see what happened and gasped. "They pushed past us and got through the Gargoyle Entrance!" she pointed.

"And you're a PREFECT, Jen... I'm simply shocked by this sort of behavior. And I'm even more ashamed that you weren't a bit more sneaky about it. What sort of wizards and witches are we producing if they can't even pull off a proper heist?" She sighed and pointed to where three chairs now waited, lined up in front of her desk. "I'm very disappointed."
