Flying Lesson - 1 You have arrived at the Quidditch for your Flying Lesson. You see several racks of school brooms lined up for the first year students. You, also, see a section of the stands that appear to have clipboards marking a section to sit in. McAiken is on sideline talking with an older group of students. He is dressed in flying robes and holding the newest model of the Firebolt line. You climb up into the stands and pick up one of the clipboard then sit down. Attached to the clipboard is several pieces of parchment and a muggle pencil, you realize McAiken means for you to use this to take your notes. |
Phoebe calls happily to the proffesor, "Good morning Proffesor. How are you?" Then she spots him holding the newest Firebolt model "Wow, is that the newest model, cool" She smiles. Phoebe is unsure if she as a second year should be here but is very happy to. She writes her name at the top of the page and waits eagerly for what to do next. |
Lee walked to the flying pitch. Professor McAiken had asked him to help him guide the first years in flying and he had accepted. Due to the fact that the Professor gave him a responsibility he wanted to be early. He saw the Professor already standing in the pitch when he arrived, "Hello there Professor McAiken, good to see you again. Your looking well." |
:: Lauren walked onto the pitch and nodded to the proffessor smiling and than to Lee than to Pheobe. She stood among the older students and waited. :: |
Phoebe smiled at The other huffie girl as she did to her. As she was walking past her she asked. "Hi, Do you know if second years can be here?" She asked hoping the girl would know. |
"Ah, Lee, thank you for coming. I thought I would use a few older students to demo flying for the first and second year students." McAiken explained why he had asked him to the pitch. |
:: Lauren looked at the girl. " I would say yes but I wouldn't ask me ask the professor. " She did a quick scan smiling to her self that mostly huffies were here. :: |
"O.k thanks. So far just huffies." She thought aloud. "Hopefully we can get a few points" She smiled to Lauren. "how are you? I haven't seen you round much before." She said while she was waiting. |
"All first and second years, please take a sit in the stands. I have provided a means by which you can still take notes. If you are an older student you may watch and then join the open practice session that will follow the formal lesson. If you recieved an owl from me asking you the help with this lesson please prepare yourself to fly. |

AJ had followed Phoebe and sat down next to her and another huffie girl, "hello," she said to the new girl, "Phoebe! hey how are ya?" she took a clipboard and wrote: Quote:

"I'm pretty good myself, you?" She asked AJ smiling back. "This looks like a good lesson don't you think?" Phoebe asked AJ having never experienced a lesson like this one. |
Lee nodded and smiled, "Sounds good. Flying was easy for me so hopefully I won't screw up in front of the younger ones," he laughed. |
Siriana climbed into the stands and grabbed a clipboard as instructed by Professor McAiken. She couldn't help but notice the muggle pencil attacked and thought Oh my! haven't seen this for quite some time and waited for more instuctions. |

AJ laughed, "ya i'm pretty good, this one looks good. it would be really funny tho if Lee crashed into something," she said upon hearing Lee's comment. AJ waved to a Ravenclaw girl who came up, "Hey, i've seen you around but i don't know you, i think," she said grinning and carefullly ignoreing that psycho Huffie boy who tried to kill her. |

Jamie waddled down towards the Quidditch Pitch with his broom in hand, hoping for a fly around it. He hadn't joined Quidditch this year, much rather preferring to focus on his studies this term around. However, as he got to the pitch, he found it seemed there was a class gathered about Professor McAiken. He paused, silently observing from a distance, listening to the Professor. He was inviting the older (and granted, Jamie was only one year older and probably looked more like a mop of a first year) students to stay and watch and they could participate in the practice? Jamie folded his arms over his chest, waved to Lee and considered this option, standing back at a distance. Maybe McAiken could teach him something new. |
AJ laughed at smiled as she saw a boy, who looked her age, but was obviously older because he brought a broom with him, waddle, yes WADDLE, down to the pitch.. she supressed a giggle and turned to Phoebe for a conversation until the rest of the class assembled. |

"Good morning class, today we're just going to cover a few points then we're going to the pitch and actually try to mount the broom and fly." McAiken explained. "I've provided you with parchment and muggle pencil. I hope all of you know how to use one. It's a bit difficult to use ink well and quills here so the pencils come in very handy. If you have a self inking quill you can of course use it but not many first and second years come prepared with those. I hope you all have read the rules for my class that were included in the pack you found on your bed the night your arrived here. First and foremost you must follow my first request. Flying, while loads of fun, can be dangerous. I have no desire to fill out in triplicate accident reports today. So do try to follow the rules and come out of this lesson in one piece." |
AJ blushed a bit as McAiken said about the accident part, and remembered her breaking her leg last year on a broom, and shut up. she stopped talking and held her pencil, ready to write. at least they'd get SOME practice in this lesson. |

Siriana saw a familiar slytherin girl waving at her "Yeah have seen you too. I'm Siriana" she smiled and eyed the older huffie it was nice older students came to help them she thought. She spotted another Ravenclaw with a broom in hand at a distance and then looked back at Professor McAiken. She nodded her head about reading the rules, she thought she wouldn't want any accidents happening to her and waited for more instructions. |
Drusilla had brought her own broom with her. She was still wondering why Professor McAiken had asked her to help him with this lesson and not some Quidditch player of their house. Seeing a Hufflepuff boy she had surely met before wearing the prefect´s badge - Lee was his name, if she remembered right - she thought it must be the Professor was asking Prefects for the job. She nodded shortly to Lee and Professor McAiken and realized most of the people at the Quidditch Pitch were Hufflepuffs. No wonder, she thought to herself, with McAiken teaching. Had it been Professor Branxton all the Slytherins would probably have been there. |
"Who can tell me the command to raise a broom into your hand?" McAiken asked. He hope the formal lesson would be short. The actuall flying was the part he like best to teach. Safety and such had their places but nothing could beat the joy of the wind and be in the air on a broom. |
Phoebe shot her hand up in the air. "up or something similiar" she said hoping it was right. |
AJ nodded, "UP!" she said, "you call your broom my sticking your hand over it and telling it UP!" she repeated. she turned to Siriana, "AJ, nice to meet you." |
"Correct, 10 points to Hufflepuff. What two pieces of safety equipment should a flyer always wear?" McAiken asked. "Sometimes people forget to wear them but for the general flyer both are a good choice for protection." He hoped the students would be prepared. |
Phoebe beaming with pride that she had earned some points raising her ajdn again she said. "Wrist guards and elbow pads. Shoes of couse but i don't think that is what you mean" She said not as certain to this answer. |
AJ copied down the notes and thought, "arm and leg pads?" she guessed. |
"Phoebe, sounds more like muggle skateboarding than flying. No these two pieces of safety equipment protect two things you need for flying. All that other stuff you might wear for quidditch but every flyer should wear these two items, even if they are only flying to Diagon Alley to store." |
Safety equipment? Drusilla looked a bit confused. Like a helmet or something, she thought to herself, but since she didn´t know the answer she didn´t say anything. She surely wouldn´t put a helmet on her head, it would look so stupid. Two things we need for flying ... Drusilla frowned. The broom and our brains, maybe ... But how to protect them? A spell, maybe ... |
AJ thought harder, "gloves? and... umm... possibly the flying robes? or maybe the boots?" she didn't know this one but would keep guessing |
Phoebe smiled at the Proffesors comments. Sher thought for a moment then raisng her hand agin "Maybe gloves and a cusioning charm on your broom?" She gueesed again. |
Drusilla suddenly raises her hand. "Goggles, maybe, to protect your eyes with," she says. |
"5 points to Hufflepuff for gloves and 5 points to Slytherin for goggles. Who can me why those are important? Durcilla and Lee feel free to answer this one. |
Lee smiled and raised his own hand this time," A means by which to keep your grip on the broom and a means to protect your eyes so you can see where you are going." |
"Goggles are important so you don´t get insects into your eyes and gloves to get a firm grip of the broom," Drusilla answers quickly. Noticing Lee had been a bit quicker to answer this one, she felt a bit stupid, but the answer was somehow similar, so it probably was right. |
AJ smiled, well she tried, she coulda gotten 5 points too because she said gloves first but oh well, she shrugged, "because GLoves you will keep your grip and with goggles you can see where your going no matter what wheather," she said shrugging, why hadn't she thought of that? |
"Exactly, 10 points to Hufflepuff for both and another 5 to Durcilla for saying the goggles protected the eye to begin with. So we have 25 points so far to Hufflepuff and 10 to Slytherin. Well done. Now we need to all go down the pitch. Lee and Durcilla will show us how to mount, push off and fly around the pitch." McAiken explained as he started to climb down the stairs to the grass. "All first year please take a house broom and if you are second year without one of your own, please also take one, also. Each broom has a set on gloves and goggles so please put those on." |
ooc: Pigwideon was first for the gloves so that 5 points belongs to Slytherin, not Hufflepuff. So points thus far are 20 H and 15 S. Sorry about that but I do correct my mistakes. |
AJ climbed down the stairs, grabbing a broom with goggles and gloves on her way. she put the gloves on on her way down, but waited until she was there to put on the goggles. |
Siriana was sad she didn't get any points. She knew the answers but everybody was faster than her. Frowning she grabbed one of the brooms, put on her gloves and goggles and followed Professor McAiken down the stairs and on the grass. |
james grab a broom and some goggles and as he walked past phoebe he winked at her. |
"Accio Firebolt," Lee said with his wand out and his broom came flying down to him. His goggles and gloves were in his pocket already. He headed down the stairs, heading for the grass. Slightly nervous about performing in front of the younger ones. |
"Okay, please make two straight lines. Be sure you can see Lee and Durcilla. Okay you two, command your brooms up." instrusted McAiken as the last of the first and second years formed lines. He stepped back so Lee and Durcilla could be seen. |

AJ stood, forming a line, and put her goggles on, and setting her broom down, so she didn't hurt anyone with it, since she was fairly clutzy, and looked at Lee and Drusilla, waiting for something to happen. |
Lee scowled at James, "Want another detention James?" Lee threatened. He quickly headed to the front where McAiken was standing and gave his first command. Lee dropped his broom to the ground and hovered his hand above the broom, "UP!" he said sharply. His broom obeyed and floated up into his grasp. |

That is normally the hand you write with or use your wand with. This will allow you more control as you mount your broom. Now everyone try. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't rise on the first command." |
AJ smiled, she knew it was "up" to get the broom there, she just hadn't been fast enough, but now she was. she was ready for, she hoped, anything. she put her hand above her broom and looked at it, "UP!" she told it. nothing. "UP!" she said again, firmer this time, and the broom rose and hit her hand, she almost lost her footing. after steadying herself she smiled, and looked around to see how everyone else was doing. |

Ghada looked at the students around her and then looked at her broom 'Up!' she said outloud her broom went directley in her hand as though it was a magnet.Ghada looked around more she spotted Siriana,AJ, A Hufflepuff prefect and someone she didn't know 'I wonder if I could sketch this' Ghada thought to her self. |

Relieved that she doesn´t have to wear a helmet, Drusilla picks a pair of gloves and goggles and her Krum´s Viktory 3000 and follows the Professor. She puts the gloves and goggles on. Hey, these doesn´t look so bad after all, she thinks to herself. And now I´m supposed to show some flying ... She´s a bit nervous, so she looks what Lee is doing to make sure she doesn´t make some silly mistakes. She sticks out her right hand over her broom. "Up!" she says with a firm voice. This is just the same as flying at home, no need to worry, she says to herself silently. Suddenly she giggles a bit. Professor McAiken has a funny way of saying her name ... She mounts from the ground and flies in circles for a while. How beautiful Hogwarts was seen from the sky, she thought. |
She queued to the line making sure she could see Lee and Drusilla clearly. She put her broom on the grass with care and bounced a little at Lee's threatening voice to the huffie. She watched him with attention getting his broom up in his hand and followed his movements. She hovered her hand over the broom and uttered "UP!". Nothing happened the broom was still on the ground. "UP!" she said again, more confident this time. The broom rose a little and fell down on the ground again. "UP!" she said again tensely not losing confidence and the broom came right in her hand. |
Now as Drusilla has shown you, after you command your broom into your hand, then you swing over one leg and mount it. Then with a solid push with your feet you should hover a few feet about the ground. I want you to only hover. We'll practice the mount and push off three times before trying to actually fly further up in the air. To set back down push the tip on the handle down and the broom with lower itself until your feet retouch the ground. Lee please show us again then take a monitoring position in the air with Drusilla, please." McAiken instrusted. |
Ghada looked at the proffesor and nodded she swung her leg of the broom and slowly pushed her broom off so she can hover Ghada waited for Lee was it she thought to take off. |
AJ swung her right leg over the broom and mounted, then added her left hand for balance and let her legs dangle, she was hovering about 3 or 4 feet off the ground. she dipped the tip of the broom down like instructed and her feet touched the ground. she set it back down, comanded up again, and repeated this 3 times and then waited, smiling, proud of herself that she could actually do this. |
Lee nodded and swung his right leg over the broom and positioned himself comfortably before slightly pushing himself from the ground, hovering nicely beside Drusila. |
james put a leg over his broom and kicked off the ground hard he flew 5,6 feet from the ground |
Siriana swung he leg over the broom and watched Lee again who showed them the way to hover. She pushed off the ground lightly and found herself hovering a little above the ground. She then pushed the tip of the handle down and her feet touched the ground again. She did this two more times and waited for further instructions. |
"Well done. Now once you are comfortable I want you to follow Lee and Drusilla around the pitch. Don't go to high just yet. They will lead you through some simple moves like circles, zig zags, and hovering in mid-air. Nothing to complicated. Keep your height low." McAiken instructed. They were now on their own in a simple sense. McAiken could and would prevent anyone from getting seriously injured by buffering their fall with charms. He took out his wand and watched the sky as the students flew for the first time. ooc: You may now freely post your practice flying. Please keep the RP realistic. I will leave the thread open for this practice for the bit then I'll post the homework. Well done to all. |
james waited in the air for lee so that he could follow him |
AJ mounted once more, kicked off, and flew to right behind Lee and waited for the trailing to begin. she flew about 10 feet off the ground and zoomed forward, every 10 feet or so she'd change directions, turning left and right, making herself turn around quickly, and stopping instantly.. all the practice last year really paid off, she thought and zoomed over to Phoebe. "this is fun, i love it!" she said squeeling happily and laughing at her own foolish-ness. |
Drusilla resisted the urge to fly around the castle and watched the younger students practice hovering. "They´re not doing bad, are they?" she said to Lee in a conversational tone, then suddenly heard McAiken to give further instructions. "I guess we are now supposed to lead the pack," she says flying lower in order to be at a safe level for the younger students. |
Lee smiled and zoomed off to his left, wondering if anyone was going to follow. He up'd his height slighty. |

Siriana made a solid push with her feet and started hovering a bit higher but not too high. She followed the older students to the left with a wide smile on her face. She knew she would like flying but this exceeded her expectations. She turned to AJ and Ghada smiling but watching carefully not to make any clumsy move and fall. |

McAiken stood on the ground and watch the students fly. The smiles on their faces told it all. Flying was one of the great feelings a young witch or wizard could have. He kept his eyes on them ready to assist them if needed. He noticed one or two he might see on the quidditch pitch for the house team one day soon. McAiken made a mental note to cover a few of the quidditch rules in his next lesson. |
Drusilla zig zagged and felt the wind waving her hair. When it was I flied last time, she thought to herself. I really ought to study less and fly more, she thought but then remembered. I´m a seventh year, and I have my N.E.W.T.´s to take care of, she thought feeling a bit ashamed of her former thoughts. |
"Okay, now you all know how to move go off and practise, don't try anything to drastic like loops or something until your are 100% comfortable with your flying," Lee said setting off and performing his own loop. |
Turning her face back to the older students, Siriana followed them as they demonstrated some zig zag moves. It was so cool and she couldn't wait to write to her father about it; well, both her parents and her brother, although her mother would not understand or approve it. She felt the wind blowing and couldn't care less of her opinion. She was having a great time here and was determined to soak up every minute of it. |

AJ looked at Lee and flew in a circle instead of a loop, maybe next lesson she'd be brave enough to do that. she smiled and flew as fast as she could in tight circles going up. she looked over to see how the others were doing and smiled at them, then went lower and just flew slowly, enjoying the feeling. |
Davina sat and watched as Lee helped the Professor with the younger students.She had enjoyed having flying lessons in her earlier years at hogwarts.She smiled at them wishing he could be up there with them. |
Ariana watched with a riased eyebrow. 'This is gonig to be difficult' she thought to herself as she commanded the broom to rise into her hand. A sharp jabbing pain went up her hand, and to her shoulder, where the unjury was still fresh. Shaking off the pain, she adjusted her goggles and prepared herself to lift off. Taking a deep breath, she pushed off, barely getting off the ground. She stepped off, this time allowing the pain ot go away before trying again. THis time she floated a little bit more off the top. It was difficult doing this with a dislocated shoulder, but she thought she was doing fine enough. Lowering the tip of her broom, Ariana gently lowered the broom to the ground and got off, shaking from the pain, but not letting it get to her. |
Sean just started to fly around in circles and then make a couple loops before getting a bit dizzy. He regained control of the broom and continued to fly around. It felt awesome. |
Amiela got right on her broom and started flying like she had been doing it for many years. |
Charlotte smiled as she flew around the ground in circles. She made a few loops and then started to fly around again. She loved every minute of it. |
Amiela caught sight of Charlotte. Hey Charlotte whats up? Amilea asked going around the top of the castle. |
Charlotte looked around and saw Amiela going around the top of the castle. Charlotte smiled. "Hey Amiela." She said. "How's flying going?" |
Arianan decided to try more. She got her broom back and kicked off the ground. She flew a little higher than before, at least 15 feet and began moving in a small circle, getting the feel for the broom. She was a little wobbly at first ,but got the hang of it soon and flew around in bigger circles. After a few minutes, she lowered the broom and landed half hazardly, rolling onto her injured shoulder. |
Madalyn grabbed her broom, goggles and gloves and left the stands. Now that it was open practice, she was eager to get up in the air. She didn't fly often since she lived in a Muggle subdivision so she was glad that second years got the chance to do some supervised practice. She kicked off the ground and wobbled a bit mid air. Starting off slow she looked around. There weren't any Gryffindors here. |

Sitting not far away as she watched the younger students fly around, a smile crept up Tia's face. The colour, which her cheeks had been rather deprived of for a day or two - and for good reasons too - seemed to return in a rush. The wind swept her long, dark hair and she sat there, her eyes following Lee and Drusilla as they flew throughout the air, helping the students who were taking the lesson. She couldn't help waving to Lee. Who cared if he would think her pretty insane for waving at him, even though she hadn't even talked to him ever. |
Grabbing ahold of his broom,nervous but unafraid, and rejoiced instantly as the wind swept past his face.All the problems and anxiaites he seemed to have on the gorund,at home,anywhere,seem to come and leave all at once as he flew farther and farther away from the ground. He couldent help it,he let out a series of laughs as he flew from the pure joy of for once feeling carefree in his life. |
Hardly able to believe her commands to bring her broom into her right hand were actually successful, Lauren swung a leg over the wood and collected herself. Okay, one good push off the ground. Steady now, fearless, solid. Just ... push. And with a strong kick to the ground, she felt the space between her and the ground begin to get bigger and bigger. Her legs dangled below as she curled over the broomstick, tilting the front up a bit so that she continued her upward climb. It was wonderful - it was as if she could see all of Hogwarts, every room, every field, every courtyard. She was floating in midair, her long hair blowing wildly around her face. She felt so ... free. And then she made her first mistake: Lauren looked down. Surveying the sights around her, she hadn't had time to realize that she had made it this high in the air. She wasn't afraid of heights, but she might as well have been for the way her stomach was doing flips and her head pounding with angst. By now the people below no longer looked like people, but instead like specks of dirt in her vision. The field wasn't textured grass, but instead a blurry blob of green. She started to panic, her broom shaking with her nerves. All of the information she had spent the last class period taking notes on was gone from her brain, her mind focusing instead on the fact that she was being held up here by magic and a few pounds of wood and straw. Her palms were sweaty, her brow prickling with heat. What was she going to do? Her head was buzzing as she tried to figure out how to fix this. She had been directing her broom upwards to gain height, so perhaps if she pushed it down a bit? She tried it, and was startled by how fast and how steeply she plummeted downwards. Lauren pulled the broom back, panting with fear. That was the only way she was going to be able to touch back on the ground again though, so she resolved to take baby steps. She tipped the broom down, let it nosedive toward the earth, then pulled it back up again just a few seconds later. Repeating the process a few times more, she ended up about 6 feet from the ground. Scared of being in the air any longer, she changed her position on the broom so it looked as if she was riding side-saddle, tilted the broom down one last time, and tucked into a roll off of it. Landing with a thud on the hard ground, her face smushed into the grass (which finally looked like grass again) and her ankle feeling as if her leg went left and her foot chose to go right, she was thankful her first try at flying was over. She had been looking forward to it, expecting to enjoy it, but now, waddling to the side of the pitch and massaging her ankle, she predicted she wouldn't see the view from atop a broom for a long time. |
Davina sighed.She saw she wasnt the only older student sitting it out.She wondered if the professor would let them fly after the lesson. |

Lia, having successfully gotten the broom to come to her, mounted and raised slightly.She listened to the instructions and flew around, staying low to the ground. She went in circles a few times, then zig-zagged. Nothing too complex, but fun, nonetheless. She quickly decided she loved to fly! |

OoC: When McAiken says RP realisticly, I'm pretty sure he means first time fliers can't make loops -.- Jamie grinned, watching the class. It seemed it hadn't been all that long that he'd been in this class, nervous about flying and all. Ashlie had warned him about how dangerous it was, but he was pretty certain it had something to do with her fear of heights. He mounted his broom and hovered lightly for a moment, before pulling up and flying into the air. He hadn't flown much since Quidditch his first term, and he'd nearly forgotten how wonderful it felt as you flew up, up, up through the air, curls whipping backwards. A giggle escaped him as his stomach clecnhed. "Lee!" he called out, waving with one hand before flying over to the gingerheaded Prefect who appeared to be doing a loop. Jamie's brows arched high over his wided eyes in amazement. "Woooah!" he breathed. "You're better than me!" |
