DADA Lesson 3 Professor Rae sighed as she opened her classroom once again. She was so distracted, she feared she wouldn't teach much of a class today. Still, she needed to try. She propped open the windows, letting some weak early spring sunlight in, and settled at her desk. |
Kay walked into the room and sat down at the front near Rae's desk. "Good day, Professor Rae," she said somewhat brightly. |
Julia entered the DADA classroom close behind Kay as she did a James Bond roll. Rae didn't look too happy today. With a slight shrug, she took a seat next to her best friend in the front of the room. She took a moment to adjust her Bugs Bunny Cape, beamed at Kay, then began to take out her supplies for class. |
Tails walked into the class and headed for a desk in the back. "Good day mademoiselle. How are you??" She sat and looked around. |
Davina walked into the classroom excited for her next DADA class, basically one of the only classes she enjoyed. She walked past professor Rae and smiled before taking a seat in the second row. |
Niky strolled into the classroom. She spotted Taylor and smiled. "Hey hunnie" she said setting her things beside her. "Where have you been hiding hmm?" she said then giggled. She took out her textbooks and got ready for class. |
Tails nodded her head in Niky's direction. "Hey Niky." She grinned. "I haven't being hiding anywhere. You recover from the acorn incident." She leaned back in her chair and bit her tongue to stop her from bursting out laughing. |
Tag was relieved to see Tails had chosen a seat at the back. He'd succeeded in not having to speak to his two archnemesis for several weeks, even if that meant he had stooped to pretty pathetic methods of avoidance. Lucky for him, they both knew the professors well enough to want to sit up close to her. He slipped into the free desk next to Tails, grinning at both her and Niky, and pulled something out of his pocket that he'd been wanting to show her. |
Niky glared at Taylor momentarly. "Oh very funny" she said sarcastically. "I actually got a bruise from that!" she protested. She rolled her eyes and put her bag down. She smiled at the teacher at the front of the class briefly. "At least tell me you got something out of it.." she said more quietly. |
Rae smiled at the students and gave a small wave. "Good morning. Let's wait just a few more minutes, and then we can get started. Make sure you have a quill, your parchment, and your wand please." |
Ebony entered the class. "Hi Professor," she said and then looked around the room for a place to sit. She saw Davina and waved to her before taking a seat towards the front of the room. |
Tails grinned again and noticed Tag out of the corner of her eye. "See for yourself." She got up and gave Tag a hug. She sat back down and got her things out like the professer had requested. She noticed that Tag had his hand in his pocket and pull it out again. There was something in his hand, but she couldn't see it properly. |
Niyk almost died when Taylor got up to hug Tag. She looked ahead holding in the urge to giggle like an annoying little school girl. She took her wand out of her robe as the teacher requested and limitted herself not to look at Tag. She kept her ears wide open though, she wanted to hear everything. |
Davina smiled and waved to Ebony before getting her quill, parchment and wand from her bag.She looked at the professor waiting for the class to start. |
Tag noticed that the two girls were whispering to themselves, but he didn't mind. Girls were always being all secretive and giggly. He was about to poke Tails when she suddenly turned and hugged him 'hello'. Slightly surprised, Tag felt his ears grow hot. "Ummm. . . hey. Look what I've got!", he murmured in a low voice. Tag pulled his hand out of his pocket, gently holding a folded-up bat. "I caught him in the Great Hall the other day. Well, Jor actually caught him. With her hair. He's a bit worse for the wear, but I'm hoping he will fly again soon." He flashed Tails a grin, hoping she wasn't afraid of bats. |
"There should be no chatter as we wait to start the class," Rae gave several tittering students a severe look. "I think we're very close to ready to start. Does everyone have their wand at the ready?" |
Tails saw Tag pull a bat out of his pocket. "Awwww, its so cute." She reached out a hand and gave the little bat a scratch on the head. "I hope he gets better too." She smiled and looked at Tag. She looked to the front and then at Niky, smiled, and then began to twirl her wand. |
Niky tried to get a peek at whatever Taylor and Tag were talking about, but she was interrupted when the teacher spoke. She immediatly sat up, grabbed her wand and stayed silent. |
Ebony was excited about the lesson and couldn't wait to start. When the Professor Rae asked if they had their wands ready she pulled hers out. Then she nodded. |
Davina looked at the wand in her hand."As ready as it could ever be professor"she said tightening her grip slightly. |
"Always, Professor Rae," Kay said as she pulled out her wand. She had been trained by Rae to be constantly vigilant at all times. |
"Excellent. Today I want us to focus once again on the scenario in which each of you may one day be placed... facing off against a Dark wizard or creature. As I'm sure you know, I'm a big proponent of keeping your head and wits about you in a fight, as well as thinking outside of the box to protect yourself and others. I want to talk about a different issue today... the one emotion that can keep you from thinking clearly and reacting promptly... any idea what it may be?" |
Ebony raised her hand and said. "Could it be fear?" |
Lia quickly got out some parchment and a quill, then took out her wand. When Professor Rae asked if they were ready, she nodded. Lia listened to the teacher, then raised her hand. "Fear would stop a person from thinking clearly," she answered. |
Kay raised her hand because she had some experience in this matter. "Isn't it fear, Professor Rae? I know that fear can cloud your thinking when being placed in such a situation. Fear can make you question your moves and what action to take next, especially when every second counts when fighting a dark witch or wizard, or even a creature." |
Niky raised her hand. "Panic usually makes you blank out" she added. |
Davina raised her hand.Ebony's answer seemed to be right.."Panic Professor?" |
Tag saw Professor Rae's warning look, and quickly put the forlorn-looking creature back into his cloak. He wasn't sure if House points were still on the table, since Samea had destroyed the hourglasses, but he didn't want to be the one to find out the wrong way. He pulled out his wand, returning Tails' smile. It seemed they just grinned dumbly at each other alot. Tag figured that was just the way it was when he liked someone. . . he automatically become a speechless idiot. |
"Yes, Ebony... good job. I can't give you five points until the wonky housepoints are back in order, but when they are... five for Gryffindor. Fear is what I'm referring to. Not only does fear keep you from reacting immediately to something, it also prevents you from thinking clearly. The things we fear can take on any number of shapes or forms. For example... you may be afraid of a creature or animal. Anyone here afraid of a creature or animal?" She looked to see any hands go up. "Don't be shy... we're all friends here." |
Davina raised her hand."Im scared of lizards." |
Kay raised her hand. "I'm not afraid to admit to it, but it's snakes for me." |
Serena raised her hand. "I strongly dislike snakes and spiders." |
Ebony was happy that she earned Gryffindor some house point. She did need to think of what she was afraid. Rats. she thought and shivered. Ebony raised her hand. "I'm afraid of rats," she said. |
Niky raised her hand shyly. "I'm sorta scared of Dragons.." she admitted. She looked over at Taylor out of the corner of her eye; surely she would chop her head off for saying that. |
When Tag heard Professor Rae ask about fear, he immediately thought, girls. But she was referring to animals. He wasn't really afraid of creatures unless they were specifically dangerous, but he knew plenty of people who were. Scenes from the snake incident in the Common Room filled his head, along with the bat-infested Great Hall. Plenty of people had been running around screaming then. Tag raised his hand. "Manticore," he said quietly. Now there was something to fear. |
Julia's eyes immediately gazed over to Kay. She knew for sure that Kay was afraid of snakes. She herself was also afraid of one animal in particular... but was she about to admit it? No way. Julia wasn't going to say anything out loud that might be used against her some way incase there were spies lurking. |
Leaning her chair back, Tails heard Niky say that she was afraid of dragons, she lost balance and fell. Regaining her seat, she put a thoughtful look on her face and thought quickly. Raising her hand she said, "I'm afraid of wolves." |
"Spiders," Natalie shuddered. |
"Good... I myself am very skittish around certain insects, but it certainly isn't what I fear most of all. There are other fears that can keep us from being able to function. Suggestions?" |
Ebony shot into the air and she said. "Some people are afraid of heights." Ebony for one wasn't she loved high places. |
Kay raised her hand. "Are you referring to the subconscious fear of making the wrong decision? This fear can over-ride your ability to make a split-second decision." |
Davina nodded.Kay had a point."very good point"she said to herself. |
Niky raised her hand. "Do you mean, as in fear of a situation? Many people fear seeing a loved one being hurt.." she commented. |
"Fear of losing what we love." Tag looked down at the wand in his hand, which he was gripping tightly. "Like, people we love. That kind of fear can stop us short, make us do things that aren't right." |
"Exactly on the right track... I'm thinking about situations or events that you are afraid may occur, including heights, enclosed places, fear of losing someone or something dear to us, and even, as Kay said, fear of making the wrong choice. There are also people who fear failure, loneliness, or confrontation. Any of these fears can be enough of a distraction to keep you from performing as you have been taught. So... what are some ways to handle your fears effectively? There are no right answers." |
Kay raised her hand. "Keep your mind focused on what you are doing. That's what I did last term," she said firmly. |
Pauline raised her hand. "How about keeping your mind on a happy thought instead of your fears," she said. |
Serena raised her hand. "Well, there are some things we can do before we actually face a situation in which our fear may be present. We must first identify exactly what we fear and the origin of this fear. Then we might talk to others to further gain knowledge on this fear or may look back on our past experiences to relive what went wrong." |
Tag sniggered at the Slytherin girl's response. Think a happy thought? What, are we in a fairy tale? Happy thoughts might work for patronuses, but they won't help you when your life is on the line. He nudged Tails next to him, wondering if she was still paying attention. "Professor. . . isn't it true that even the most experienced of Aurors still struggle with fear? I mean, how do they do it without freaking out?" |
"You could just imagine that it's something else... or tell yourself that it's not so bad. Like a psycological thing," Whende suggested with her hand. She lightly drummed her fingers on her desk and made squishing wet sounds with her shoes. |
"Okay, so what I think I'm hearing you all say is that you have several different ways to deal with an overwhelming fear. First, Serena suggests that prior to any encounters, you work through what you fear to find its root. So knowing what and why you fear would make it less powerful. That's very good. Five for Gryffindor." She nodded and looked at the others who had contributed. "Kay suggest focusing on the task at hand, which is always a good idea. I don't know how many Auror situations I came out of successfully simply by force of will. Five for Ravenclaw. And last, Pauline suggests we focus on a happy thought. I think you have a specific spell in mind, am I right? What is it?" |
Rae responded to the additional comments. "You could try to psych yourself out, Whende... but you'd have to have a fairly active imagination or force of will to be able to talk yourself out of being afraid of something as you are confronting it. Perhaps if you can do it ahead of time...? And yes, Tag... even experienced Aurors face our fears everyday. But that's what the intensive training is for... to learn how to face that fear and move on." Her face grew sad for a moment before she looked to the students for more responses. |
Rosalie's hand raised into the air. |
Kim raised her hand and said''You could learn why you a have the certain fear in the first place then find someone with that fear. Then try to get the fear to go away togather. For example if you have a fear of geting close to people learn why you have that fear. Then try finding someone with that fear and move on toagther. As for getting spells to get rid of your fears. The spell would depress the fear not realy get rid of it wouldnt it? |

"Say when you were a child, you saw a dog maul your cat, you probably wouldn't remember that, because you wouldn't have a scar or anything trigger the memory. You'd just be afriad of dogs right?" Rosalie asked. She combed some locks of her long auburn hair behind her ears, and leaned back in her chair. "It depends on what kind of fear your facing. If the fear is being broght on by a creature such as a Dementor, then understanding what was causing this could help deminish some of the fear. If your afraid of spiders, and you have to kill a spider the size of your fist then your going to have to go about it completely differently." She reached up with one hand and twirled a lock of her hair around her index finger. "But a lot of things could play into how you get over it. "It would depend on how afraid of the given thing. Does it give you the willies? Or is this a phobia? Is it a hillucination. Or do you have complete control of your mind while your facing this down?" |
Whende jotted down some of the things being said. She supposed that Professor Rae was right about needing a big imagination. It would work for her, as her imagination was extremely wild and random but the Professor did have a point. She glanced over at Rosalie for a moment before she remembered that she was supposed to be mad at her. Quickly, she switched her attention back to the front of the room. |

"You obviously can't always work through a fear, especially if it's an irrational one or something that would be painful or dangerous to face for no reason, but it helps to recognize what a fear is and to come to terms with it. If you are afraid of heights, you don't have to jump off a cliff, but you could also recognize that in fighting a Dark wizard on a cliff... the wizard is more dangerous than the height. The threat must be met first before allowing your fear to take over." |

"I agree," Rae nodded. "So we all acknowledge that it is necessary to move past fear, whatever way works for us. I'm going to ask you to face your fears head-on in just a moment. This is going to be a bit untraditional, so please bear with me. Now, if you could all fix firmly in your mind what it is you think you fear the most." |
Rosalie closed her brown eyes and brought to her mind an image of a tall bald man. He had a thick neck, and arms. Just as he had when she was a child, he reminded her of a body builder or a WWF wrestler. Nothing about him made her think 'Daddy,' she always thought she should have. Biting her bottom lip, she waited, wondering where this was going. |
Kim thought realy hard what she fears the most.Lots of thoughts came to mind like coachroachs and spiders, someone killing her or dieing young. Then finely she thought of failure as always scared her and it was a fear. Then waited quetily for more information. |
Sean closed his eyes and searched his mind for the thing that he feared most. Many thoughts raced through his head that somewhat feared him until he reached the worst. He was in a dark house, lonely, and depressed. He looked as if the excitement of life had been sucked out of him. |
Natalie thought for a second. A few things went through her head. She thought of how she was afraid of pain, but realized this was really because she was afraid of death. She waited there quietly, imagining a truck crushing her, as she waited for the professor to go on. |
zack closed eyes first thing that came to him head was darkness then a hand comes out of the darkness grabing him then he quickly opens his eyes scared |

He felt a strong impression to leave the class. He didn't want to face his fear. Hopefully, Rae didn't mean they would be literally facing their fears. |
Ebony closed her eyes and thought about the thing she feared the most. A large grey rat appeared. She hated everything about them from their eyes to their long worm like tail. A shiver went through her body as she thought about them. They had this vile look about them that made her sick to her stomach. Whenever she sees a rat it makes her felt as though there's a traitor somewhere near. Someone thats disloyal to her and the people she love. She hated that feeling most of all. Ebony still had her eyes closed and waited for the Professor to tell them what they were to do next. |
Francesca's eyes started darting around when Rae mentioned they'd be facing their worst fears head on. She didn't see anyone in the room that would use that fact against her so she shrugged her shoulders. She thought about what she feared the most and really wanted to get out of the classroom now. She didn't want everyone in the room knowing what it was that she feared but there was no way out of it. |
Serena bit back a sharp intake of breath as Professor Rae mentioned that they would face their fears head-on. Did she really mean literally? If so, Serena was not looking forward to participating in this portion of the class. Her mind automatically darted towards her worst fear and she briefly shut her eyes. This particular fear had occured to her many times over, especially since the transpiration of last term's events. Opening her eyes again, she stared apprehensively at the professor, awaiting her next words. |
Kay stared at Professor Rae. She had told the headmistress earlier in the week what her true fear was and it didn't have an image she could fix into her mind. |
Patrick's eyes glazed over as he thought about what he might fear. Growing up. Or being separated from Katherine. |
"Now, take that fear... take it and consider what it would take to make that fear humorous or less frightening. The funnier, the better... is anyone willing to give me an example of what they fear, and we'll make it funny together." |

"Yes," Rae nodded and came forward to put her hand on Rosalie's shoulder. "Thank you, my dear. Five for Slytherin. Now, what's something that always always makes you giggle?" |
Phoebe thought of her fear. It had happened and yet she still feared it. She raised her hand, "Proffesor, my fear. Well, it has happened but I still fear it." She said. "I can't make it funny because, well I know what it felt like when it happened." She said thinking back at the beggining of term. |

"Think it or say it?" Sean asked the Professor. |
Phoebe couldn't help but laugh when Rosalie said that Whende made her laugh. Phoebe agreed, Whende made everyone laugh. |
Rae smiled at Whende before nodding eagerly. "What would your big father look like with Whende's crazy rainbow hair? Or maybe in her goofiest dress robes? What would he look like skipping along, Whende-sized, with his arm linked with Whende? Giggling?" She had to smile. "Pretty funny?" |
She tried to imagine it, but couldn't. She knew she never could. "It's a wonderful thought, but I can't picture it." She confessed, wrinkling her nose. Images of her father flooded her mind, and she shivered. |
Davina thought about what she feared...Well apart from losing to Ravenclaw I guess lizards. She sat and watched professor rae with the other students. |
Pauline thought about what she feared most and her mother came into her mind. |
"Keep trying," Rae patted her shoulder and returned to the front of the room. "Now... someone else want to give it a try? Think of what you fear, and make it completely silly. If you need help, that's what we're here for." |
Davina thought for awhile how do I make lizards and creepy crawlies funny?.She sighed.Maybe she did need some help. |
Pauline thought about how to make her mother silly. "hmm how about her mother with a flowery hat, a pink skirt and top and pink shoes with stilts attached" she thought and started to laugh but laughed out loud a bit. She heard her laugh and covered her mouth hoping no one noticed. |
Deeps kept thinking of what she feared the most.suddenly tigers striked into her mind.tigers were the most horrible thing she was feared of.then she thought of changing it silly with some mini skirts ,a short blouse and some funny hairstyles. |
Kay continued to stare in disbelief at Professor Rae. This is not funny, especially when you KNOW that I can't do this assignment, she thought miserably. Hoping not to draw any attention to herself, she put her wand away and sat back with her arms folded across her chest. |
Whende had to agree. It was pretty hard to imagine. Especially the bit about skipping around with her. That=Never going to happen. A laugh wriggled free in the form of a snort as she doodled in the margins of her notes. "Erm..." What was she afraid of? There had to be something other than the normal stuff. Her mind immediately jumped to Kamil... No. That was the old Kamil. She thought for a moment before raising her hand. "Er, Professor? How can you make an axe-holding maniac with red eyes funny?" |
Rosalie giggled when she heard a vague discription of Kamil. "Picture him dancing around in a pink tutu." Rosalie suggested, snorting her laughter at the though. Kamil wouldn't be seen dead doing such a thing... |
Whende smiled. Although Kamil wasn't too scary anymore, it was all she could think of. Besides, it would be useful to know how to deal with people like him as well. "Right, tutu," she said, turning red from trying not to laugh. She scribbled it down in her bright orange notebook. |
Xavier sat silently. He didn't see the point of this exercise." |
Pauline waited for the proffesor to answer. She saw a boy sitting doing nothing. She looked at him and then looked away. |
Tag saw some of the other students doing nothing, and watched the giggling ones with with something akin to disbelief. He slumped down in his chair miserably. Things like death and violence and loss. . . it just would never be funny, not in a million years. If what he was afraid of had a face, maybe. But loss was more of a force. . . you couldn't put a tutu on it and make it dance around. |
Phoebe thought, how do I make someone dead funny? She asked herself. Then another fear, much stronger came to mind. She still couln't think of anything funny with that either, she had an idea. "Proffesor, does it have to be the thing you are most scared of?" If it didn't she knew what to do. |
Eden Starr Eden thought for a second about what she feared but all she could think of was her being alone. she tried to think of something else. the thought to herself. -hmm... well people are normally afraid of spiders...- she shook her head.-people fear snakes? but im more like a tom boy... i havent really faced anything that i came to fear... i guess i'll have to make one up...-she sighs. |
Patrick cpouldn't think of anything that could make growing up less frightening. "Professor," he began but then stopped. |
Sara sat there thinking. Hmm...how could she make seeing Lord Voldemortist less scary. Ah, she probably shouldn't use him though. Hmm...bees? Nah...she couldn't make them less frightening. "Grr," she growled out loud. She was frustrated and way tired of thinking. There wasn't really that much that frightened her. She was definitely not saying Lord Voldemortist, truth was, she wasn't really that frightened of him. Merlin, she just wanted revenge for her father. She sat there staring into nothingness. Then, noticing Patrick she looked at him. Smiled, giggled, then turned away. |
Becky sat there thinking about her one fear...losing Ryan...she couldnt think of any way possible to make that seem funny |
Cassandra thought of what she feared most... being burried alive. How does one make fun of that? "Professor? How does one make lite of being burried alive?" |
ooc: Ugh, sorry... I work two jobs and should have known better. "I assure you... you need to choose the thing you are MOST afraid of, or it will choose you. I'm appaled to find we all lack such vision, so why don't you pair up with someone you trust and take a moment to brainstorm. You may work in groups of two to four, but please do not chat with each other about anything but this assignment. We'll proceed in a moment." |
