Ancient Runes Class 1

Professor Opteryx opened the classroom door and, after taking a glance around, settled down at his desk and waited for the students to arrive to the first Ancient Runes class of the term.

miss weasley 08-07-2006 05:21 PM

eliza walked in"hello professor!" ,she sat down.

Hermione_loves_Ron 08-07-2006 05:23 PM

Jamie bounced into the classroom, his messenger bag bouncing with him. Tucked inside was Sergent GusGus, the rodent's nose sticking out lightly, depsite Jamie's best attempts to get him to hide. Obviously, it wasn't going to work.

He took a seat and glanced up at the Professor, nodding a hello, before settling down to a doodle on a scrap of parchment paper, waiting for his friends' arrivals.

Superwoman! 08-07-2006 05:24 PM

Becky entered the classroom and took a seat..."Hello Professor"

Brittany Weasly 08-07-2006 05:25 PM

Brittany came in and saw a boy sitting by himself she asked could "I sit right here" (Jamie)

roonilwazlib 08-07-2006 05:27 PM

Sean walked into class and sat down. Spotting Ariana, he called over to her to sit next to him.

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 05:27 PM

Ariana walked in, looking around and sat down at the back of the class. She was hoping she would learn something, she was interested in this class but had a feeling she would be bad at it. She took out her quills and parchment and said to the professor "Hello professor, good to meet you!"

QuidditchChick 08-07-2006 05:28 PM

Amber walked into the classroom with high spirits. This, along with Defense Against the Dark Arts, was her favorite class. She found runes utterly intriuging and loved carving them into charms for her friends. She sat down at a desk near the front intent on not missing a single bit of information. She smiled at the professor. "Good day, Professor Opteryx." she said as she folded her hands and waited for class to begin.

Raider 08-07-2006 05:30 PM

Rave walked into her favorite class and gave Professor Opteryx a wide smile. "Hello Professor, I hope your doing well." she said as she sat down in the very front of the class.

secretlover101 08-07-2006 05:31 PM

Emily walked into the classroom smiling when she noticed she actually knew someone. Emily sat down and waited for the class to start.

Evy 08-07-2006 05:31 PM

Evy walked into the room silently and took a seat in the front row.

Brittany Weasly 08-07-2006 05:34 PM

Brittany saw that he didn't say anything so she took a seat somewhere else.

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 05:36 PM

Ariana got up and noticed Sean waving her over. She quickly moved over to his spot and whispered a quick "Hey." and put her stuff down.

BrightestWitch 08-07-2006 05:36 PM

Jordana walked into class and noticed that there were already a few people there. She smiled at the Professor as she passed his desk, and made her way to an empty seat in the back of the class. She sat down and waited for class to commence.

roonilwazlib 08-07-2006 05:38 PM

"Hey. You ready for class?" Sean asked her.

Waddles 08-07-2006 05:40 PM

Josey walked into class and sat down in the middle of the room. She was excited to learn about Ancient Runes; it was like learning a foreign language!

emanuel182 08-07-2006 05:42 PM

Vicky walked into the crowded classroom and quickly took a seat in the front. She took out her book and waited for the class to start.

Hermione_loves_Ron 08-07-2006 05:45 PM

Jamie nodded at the Gryffindor girl. "You can if you wish," he said, before noticing Amber entered the room. He liked being able to recognize people in class. He settled back with his doodle and continued to work on it, a bushy cat like figure.

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 05:47 PM

Ariana nodded at Sean and replied "I guess so. Just hope I answer one question right." she looked around waiting for the lesson to start.

roonilwazlib 08-07-2006 05:48 PM

"Yeah, me too." Sean said to Ariana.

i m a potter fool ^_^ 08-07-2006 05:50 PM

Prancie entered the classroom and sat happily

beck77 08-07-2006 05:51 PM

Beck walked into the room and took a seat, pulled out her book, parchment and quill ready to start the class.

Brittany Weasly 08-07-2006 05:53 PM

Brittany had seen the girl beck that she had meet in the common room she smiled at beck and then got her notebook out and her quill.

aiangel327 08-07-2006 05:53 PM

Jen entered the classroom, finally in a good mood. Her bag thudded against her leg as she stopped short, scanning the room for a familiar face. Her eyes landed on a head of brown curls that was all too familiar and a smile made it's way onto her face.

"Jamie!," she exclaimed making her way over and taking a seat beside him. She smiled widely as she pulled out a quill and waited for the lesson to begin.

Beck noticed Brittany and smiled back and gave a little wave.

Professor Opteryx nodded to each student as they entered the room and greeted him. He reckognized a few familiar faces amongst the bunch, including Rave and Evy and a few more he c

Rave's hand shot into the air, "People used runes for writing messages, inscriptions and epitaphs, as amulets and charms, as an oracle for use in divination and for rituals, magic and spells."

Angel8807 08-07-2006 06:01 PM

Angel was seated a row to the side and a seat back from Evy. "Hello" she said softly as she took out her note taking material. She gave her fellow hufflepuff a friendly smile and then started glancing about the room.

BrightestWitch 08-07-2006 06:02 PM

Jordana raised her hand and said, "Ancient Runes have been used as a means of obtaining answers from a Higher Source. I'm not sure of what else they could have been used for. That's all I recall at the moment." she said with a faint smile.

Hermione_loves_Ron 08-07-2006 06:03 PM

Jamie raised his hand. "In Muggle history, Runes were used as a form of writing, sort of. Hylogrphyics, I think they were called? But, anyway, Runes sometimes told writing, but in some mythologies, they used them almost like a form of Divination."

miss weasley 08-07-2006 06:03 PM

"runes are used for writing and as amulets!" eliza said

roonilwazlib 08-07-2006 06:03 PM

Sean raised his hand and said, "Ancient Runes are also used for amulets and charms as well as for rituals and for oracles."

Brittany Weasly 08-07-2006 06:04 PM

Brittany didn't want to take a chance and say the wrong answer so she just sat there.

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 06:04 PM

Ariana didn't bother to lift her hand up, since everyone else pretty much answered it correctly. She didn't know anything about Ancient Runes anyway, that's why she was here.

magical girl 08-07-2006 06:07 PM

saeda raised her hand and
said "Ancient Runes are used for amulets and charms ''.

Angel8807 08-07-2006 06:07 PM

Angel raised her hand. "Runes are an ancient Germanic alphabet, used for writing, divination and magic. They were used throughout northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 100 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E."

Waddles 08-07-2006 06:08 PM

Josey rested her chin on her hand as she quickly took notes on the other students' answers. The class had barely started and already they were learning a lot!

beck77 08-07-2006 06:11 PM

Beck's eye crossed at all the answers that were being fired off so quickly. She didn't know anything about Runes, and she had read the book ahead of time. She quickly wrote down all the information that was being said and tried to pay close attention.

Silver Knight 08-07-2006 06:12 PM

Serilda jot down some notes and quickly read through a little bit of her textbook. "Hrm..." she murmrured, studying one of the runes. She drew a model rune in her notebook and attempted to translate some of the words and symbols on the rune.

william.cook1990 08-07-2006 06:14 PM

Sebastian rose his hand. "The ancient Egyptians used runes to write to each other. In fact, many cultures used symbols, instead of actual letters to sybolize certain meanings."

QuidditchChick 08-07-2006 06:16 PM

Amber raised her hand. "Runes were originally used as a writing system by the Anglo Saxons, which devolped into our modern writing today. In a magical sense, however, they can be used to do divinations, good luck charms, and talismans that react differently depending on the other runes they are paired with, or how they written. Runes can be very effective or dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 06:26 PM

Ariana wrote down everything everyone said, not wanting to miss a single thing. She began doodling a rune onto her notes, not really seeing what she was drawing. She looked up to the professor, waiting.

HP_Fan_09 08-07-2006 06:35 PM

Jewil said knowing she was really late on the subject but filling the teacher had not said anything meant the answers where not right. "UMMM... The Ancient Vikings believed that the Runes were the gift of Ódhinn, and The runes are inextricably bound to Norse mythology." Knowing she was late she looked at her hands.

Jordana raised her hand and said, "Ancient Runes have been used as a means of obtaining answers from a Higher Source. I'm not sure of what else they could have been used for. That's all I recall at the moment." she said with a faint smile.
"Right again. Five points."

Jamie raised his hand. "In Muggle history, Runes were used as a form of writing, sort of. Hylogrphyics, I think they were called? But, anyway, Runes sometimes told writing, but in some mythologies, they used them almost like a form of Divination."

Quote:

"The ancient Egyptians used runes to write to each other. In fact, many cultures used symbols, instead of actual letters to sybolize certain meanings."

"Runes and Hieroglyphics are similar, but they aren't the same, as you pointed out. Hieroglyphical symbols were used by the Ancient Egyptians to resemble the item or being that they are made to represent, while runes are more simple and are symbols that represent a letter rather than an entire word. Five points to both of you for bringing that up."

Quote:

"Runes are an ancient Germanic alphabet, used for writing, divination and magic. They were used throughout northern Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and Iceland from about 100 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E."
"Correct, ten points. And while we're on this subject I'll point out that there are different scripts of runes depending on the country. What will be studied in this class is the Elder Futhark script, considered the oldest."

Quote:

Amber raised her hand. "Runes were originally used as a writing system by the Anglo Saxons, which devolped into our modern writing today. In a magical sense, however, they can be used to do divinations, good luck charms, and talismans that react differently depending on the other runes they are paired with, or how they written. Runes can be very effective or dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.

Professor Opteryx nodded. "Very true--runes are not to be experimented with if you've little idea of what they will do, because runes in a string have a very different effect than a single rune alone. Ten points."

"Now, runes are basically little more than a writing system on their own. What must be done to runes to render them useful in magic?"

Hermione_loves_Ron 08-07-2006 06:46 PM

"Do you have to cast a charm or spell upon them?" asked Jamie with his hand up. "So that it can have its powers and be different from heiroglyphics?"

Droo 08-07-2006 06:46 PM

Cassandra raised her hand "Do they need to be in physical form? Amulets and such?"

miss weasley 08-07-2006 06:48 PM

"do you need to say some sort of poem or something?"eliza tried to think of the word "a chant."

beck77 08-07-2006 06:48 PM

Beck raised her hand "To make the writing magic, you have to have the correct tree, herb or stone associated with the symbol."

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 06:50 PM

Ariana thought about this and raised her hand as she guessed in a small voice "Um, shouldn't you perform a small ritual before casting them? I mean, like putting them in a bag and swirling them around then placing them as they fall softly onto your hand or something like that..." her voice trailed off as her answer sounded dumb to her. She blushed a bright red colour and covered her face in her hands.

Angel8807 08-07-2006 06:51 PM

Angel wasn't sure of her answer but she gave it a shot. "There are three sources on divination that give vague descriptions to runes. They are Tacitus' Germania, Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga saga and Rimbert's Vita Ansgari. No one is sure though if they have anything in common. Are any of us even close Professor?" Angel asked.

william.cook1990 08-07-2006 07:03 PM

"I've heard rumours of certain spells being cast on runes to make them mean certain things and do certain things, but I'm not entirely certain," Sebastian said, answering the teacher's question.

BrightestWitch 08-07-2006 07:04 PM

Jordana raised her hand, "Professor, isn't writing something in runes a spell in itself? Because you are bringing the statement into concrete reality. A way of using the runes for magic is to write out rune rows, or rune scripts." she was probably wrong but it didn't matter, she was there to learn.

Lissy Longbottom 08-07-2006 07:15 PM

"Don't you need to figure out what it means first?" Jackie asked. She had been sitting in the back of the classroom, "Something bad is likely to happen if you don't translate it correctly." she said, pretty sure it was a good answer

Golden Monkey 08-07-2006 07:15 PM

Ariana put her head on the desk and groaned. She knew she had been dead wrong, she felt liek a fool for even trying. She was better at DADA and Diviniation then anything. She sighed and put her head back up, waiting patiently.

Nightingale 08-07-2006 07:31 PM

Kay had no idea what the correct answer was, so she poised her quill over her notebook and prepared to write the answer down when it was given.

emanuel182 08-07-2006 07:36 PM

Vicky raised her hand after she remembered something she'd read in a book.

"Shouldn't somebody find windfall branches in order to burn the rune glyph after the branches are cut and finally...make Runes...?"she said, still not so sure.

QuidditchChick 08-07-2006 07:40 PM

"The runes have to be consecrated in some way." she said, sounding as if she knew what she was talking about, but in reality was rather unsure. "This can be done through carving them a certain way, performing a ritual as some have stated, or as I have seen some do, tracing the carved rune with blood."

WhizzyBubbles 08-07-2006 09:16 PM

Alicia writ these notes down in her notebook, then pen poised she raised her hand "Runes, are a mixture of Ancient symbols, Heirogliphs and texts, a single, or a group of them forms clues, and Ancient History" Alicia said, hoping that it was correct.

miss weasley 08-07-2006 09:18 PM

"you may have to do a ritual.i've seen someone trace runes on a floor with chalk ,light candles and say a sort of chant." eliza said, remembering the time she saw that,it sent shivers up her spine.

Quote:

Beck raised her hand "To make the writing magic, you have to have the correct tree, herb or stone associated with the symbol."

"Not necessarily, but it would enhance the effect. What you write or carve the runes on usually depends on how long you want the spell to last. For example, the entrance to Platform 9 3/4 relies somewhat on runes carved in stone around the entrace, though you normally can't see them as you pass through."

"Shouldn't somebody find windfall branches in order to burn the rune glyph after the branches are cut and finally...make Runes...?"she said, still not so sure.

"Well, what you've described is how runes are used for Divination purposes, which case the runes do not necessarily have to be spelled--however, they must be carved on a specific medium and undergo a certain ritual to ready them for Divination use. I suggest you refer to the Divination Professor for more information on that.

Jordana raised her hand, "Professor, isn't writing something in runes a spell in itself? Because you are bringing the statement into concrete reality. "Yes and no--five points for bringing this up. As far as we know Muggles used the runic script to write messages, and those have no magical value whatsoever. Only a few samples of runic writing have been found to have some magical connotation to them, but, as they were made hundreds of years ago, the magic they contained has faded. Activating runes is done differently, depending on the wizard or witch, and so attempting to re-activate another wizard's runic script is not advisable unless you really know what you're doing. Otherwise, there might be a magical misfire."

Quote:

"Don't you need to figure out what it means first?" Jackie asked. She had been sitting in the back of the classroom, "Something bad is likely to happen if you don't translate it correctly." she said, pretty sure it was a good answer

Professor Opteryx nodded. "That's why Ancient Runes is a difficult subject to master and put into practice. The more runes a runic script or rune string contains, the more complicated it is to translate it as the runes will work to change or cancel out each other. You can think of it like brewing a potion--the more ingredients there are in the cauldron and the more steps there are, the more complex the potion is and the chance of failure increases."

"So," he said, after a pause as students scribbled down notes, "Are there any questions before we move on to a small activity?"

roonilwazlib 08-07-2006 09:56 PM

Sean nodded his head and waited for the professor to continue.

Nightingale 08-07-2006 09:56 PM

Kay shook her head that she had no questions and prepared for the activity.

HP_Fan_09 08-07-2006 09:57 PM

Jewil looked around. She really didn't understand but she would write everything down and study her notes and if she still dident understand she would ask. She was ready for the small activity what ever it was.

Prancie raised her hand, "Um, is there a certain material that all runes are written on? Like, are they all written in stone?"

Siriana Red 08-07-2006 10:07 PM

Siriana wrote on her parchment everything that was said by the Professor and her classmates. She was happy Ravens earned some points and more happy her friend Jordana did. She was listening attentively, having no idea about Ancient Runes it sounded fascinating to her.

Droo 08-07-2006 10:14 PM

Cassandra was so pleased with herself. She was gaining house points! She pulled her book out of her bag and listened.

LeapFrog 08-07-2006 10:33 PM

Rose sat back absorbing every word. In muggle school she was always eager to respond and was always correct. Here she found herself a metaphorical fish out of water. What used to come easily took a little more effort, and Rose was not used to effort. Instead she just tried her best to keep up with the topics and lessons and classes.

GreenDayGirl9293 08-07-2006 10:41 PM

Nicole was pretty sure she understood this, but it was a bit confusing. She decided to look over her notes again when the class was over. She owuld probably need to, anyway.

"There are a few materials that are commonly used--usually wood or stone, though sometimes clay or crystal is used. For divination purposes, wood is usually preferred--wood from windfall branches, specifically, and not wood cut straight from a living tree. Also, runes have been found carved on the blades of weapons, possibly to infuse magical power into it. There are also incidences of runes being drawn on the ground in a circle with a wizard's wand, however I haven't seen one of those myself."

"Something fairly simple. Everyone take out a piece of parchment and write your first name on it." Professor Opteryx turned to the blackboard and did the same:

Quote:

ZEPHYR
"Once you've done that, look through your textbook for the conversion chart (ooc: http://www.runemaker.com/bindrune.shtml ) and convert your name into runic script (ooc: The runes are here.) Make note of the names of the runes as you do so. Once everyone's done that, we'll move on to the next step."

Siriana wrote her name on a piece of parchment. Then she looked at her book to find the conversation chart and tried to convert her name into runic script, making a note of the rune's name at the same time...She came up with the following:

S http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/sow.gif(Sowilo)
I http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/isa.gif (Isa)
R http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/rad.gif (Raido)

N http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/nau.gif (Naudiz)
A http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1..._runes/ans.gif (Ansuz)

She gazed at her parchment and smiled, then looked at the professor for what to do next

GreenDayGirl9293 08-07-2006 11:30 PM

Okay, this seems fun. Nicole looked through her book, and found the runes.

She wrote on her parchment, and looked back up to the teacher.

Stacey wrote on her piece of parchment, first spelling out her name and placing the appropriate runes next to each letter.

Let's see, Lauren thought to herself. Laguz ... Ansuz ... Uruz ... Raido ... Ehwaz ... Naudiz. Okay, good. Her first name was finished. Now, to her surname. Laguz ... Uruz ... Mannaz ... Laguz (again) ... Ehwaz ... Ihwaz.

"Cool," Lauren said under her breath, a smile playing with the corners of her lips as she began to write the symbols in different styles across her parchment, happy at what she had learned to do.
She was going to enjoy this class.

HP_Fan_09 08-07-2006 11:42 PM

Jewil first wrote down her name on the parchment then tried her best to make the name with the runes.

While the class was busy, Professor Opteryx began adding a few notes to his name on the blackboard.

Kay began to copy the professor's actions by adding to her own paper.

Finished transcribing her name with runes in one creative way after another (it was amazing how neat these symbols looked in bubble letters, outlined, filled in, written in different colors), Lauren decided she should probably stop messing around with doodles and actually do something productive. So, she turned to another page of parchment and, one step behind Professor Opteryx, copied the notes from the board. Afterwards, she opened her textbook and wrote down the same keywords for each symbol. She wasn't sure what they meant ... but she knew she'd find out in due time.

BrightestWitch 08-08-2006 12:18 AM

Jordana took out a piece of parchment as instructed and wrote her name down. She then began looking through her text for the conversion chart. Once she found it she began to convert her name into Runic Script:

When she was done, she set her quill down and gazed at her name. She smiled, and was pleased with how it came out. "That's actually pretty." she said to herself in a hushed voice.

Droo 08-08-2006 12:24 AM

Amber got her quill out and began scralling on her paper. It didn't take her very long, because she had all of the Furthork memorized.

When she was finished, she set her quill down and folded her hands and waited for further instructions.

Waddles 08-08-2006 12:38 AM

Josey wrote her name down in English and opened her book to the page. She carefully copied the runes down for each letter of her name:

BrightestWitch 08-08-2006 12:41 AM

Jordana looked up at the blackboard and watched as the Professoer added more information to his name. Not sure if she should do the same, she decided to add the extra details as well. She added the following to her parchment.

Quote:
