"What about a leaf blower?" Emma said with hand in air.

lightstar1154 06-05-2006 09:35 PM

Professor Light clapped her hands together as two hands shot up shouting "vaccum cleaner".

"Excellent, that's what I expected you to come up with, it's a very common and useful Muggle device."

Professor Light smiled as a Ravenclaw girl mentioned the dust-buster. "Ah yes, a mini-vacuum of sorts, those things are handy. You three may each take 2 points for your house for being the first."

Professor Light then listened as the other students suggested some ideas as well. "Yes, yes, all correct."

Raider 06-05-2006 09:36 PM

Rave looked around surprised at how many ideas the other students came up with. She was lucky she even pronunced vacuum right! 'They must be Muggle-born or at least half and half' she thought to herself Either that or they have very muggle like parents' Rave sighed as she thought of her parents, she still had to write them that letter.

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 09:37 PM

Erin, thinking of another electricity-powered muggle cleaning device, put her hand up again. "Oh, and there are things called carpet cleaners," she mentioned. "I've never used one, but from what my mum said, they basically just suck dirt out of the carpet."

my pathetic attempt at discribing a vacuum

"Ok then, judging by all of your hands, most of you know pretty much about Muggle cleaning already. But I'd like to go in depth about one particular object."

Professor Light stopped and when over to the cupboard. She wheeled out an old vacuum. It had a bag attached and a long handle, and the bottom looked sort of like the front of a Muggle car, only much smaller.

"This," Professor Light started, "Is a rather common Muggle vacuum."

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 09:43 PM

Erin looked at the vacuum and nodded; having lived in a muggle household her whole life, she knew what one looked like already.

Simple_Spells 06-05-2006 09:48 PM

Emma shuddered. The vacuum at home was her worst enemy.

lightstar1154 06-05-2006 09:50 PM

Professor Light watched the reactions of the students. Then she began again.

"Let me give you just a brief history... this is the part you might want to write down." she nodded at the students, most of whom hadn't even bothered to pull out their pencils yet.

Simple_Spells 06-05-2006 09:53 PM

Emma rummaged through her bag and took out a pen. She hated pencils and never carried them, so she hoped the professor didn't mind. Taking out a new sheet of paper, she labeled it "Muggle Studies - The Vacuum".

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 09:54 PM

Erin grabbed a pencil and a sheet of paper, ready to write down a few notes about the history of a vacuum cleaner. She suddenly giggled, thinking about how foolish this lesson would seem at a muggle school. Then, regaining her composure, Erin, once again, got ready to write.

Lady Marmalade 06-05-2006 10:01 PM

Ebony took out a piece of paper and a pencil and started to take some notes. It was kinda stupid for her to write down what she already know. She was muggle born after all. Maybe some of my friend would need to read over them. she thought.

info from: About.com

Professor Light began, "Hubert Cecil Booth, a British engineer, received a British patent for a vacuum cleaner on August, 30 1901. Although vacuums had been around long before this, no idea had really trademarked their idea or made one that was useful enough that the public might actual believed it was worth money."

"Now, the first vacuums were huger than this, and highly inconvient, and we all know that that is something you want when cleaning, convienience. Think about it, if the job was harder with the object, you wouldn't use it, would you?"

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 10:10 PM

Erin shook her head after writing down a few things on her paper about Hubert Cecil Booth and the invention of the vacuum.

Lady Marmalade 06-05-2006 10:16 PM

Ebony shook her head. Why use sosmething if it doesn't make the job easiler.

Simple_Spells 06-05-2006 10:29 PM

Emma expected people had used it because it was new and different at that point and maybe were just as sick of sweeping as she was of vacuuming.

lightstar1154 06-05-2006 10:31 PM

Professor Light rolled the vacuum over to a carpet square she had sitting on the side of the room.

"Ok now, I'm going to turn this on... the noiseis very loud, and if you've never heard one of these before, I just want to warn you so I don't have anyone jumping out of their seats."

Professor Light looked at the students and then switched a power button to "On". A loud VROOOOOOMMMM noise filled the room as the vacuum lit up and the bag inflated slightly.

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 10:32 PM

Even though Erin had used a vacuum quite a few times herself, she jumped slightly when the professor turned it on. It had been a while since she'd heard one.

Pandalicious 06-05-2006 10:52 PM

Brittany jumped in her seat and blushed right afterwards. She turned back to her notes and started to write some little facts down..Brittany glanced around the room to see how other students would react to the sudden noise of the vacum. She thought some purebloods would take it as a shoke..

lightstar1154 06-05-2006 11:05 PM

Professor Light shouted over the noise, "AS YOU CAN SEE, VACUUMS ARE QUITE NOISY... YOU MIGHT THINK THAT THIS EFECT ENOUGH WOULD BE BAD ENOUGH TO TURN SOMEONE OFF OF A VACUUM. BUT OBSERVE."

Professor Light left the vacuum running on the carpet square and pulled out a jar of dark brown dirt. She tossed it over the carpet. She gripped the handle of the vacuum tightly and began to shout over the noise again, "ALL I NEED TO DO NOW IS RUN THIS OVER THE DIRT, LIKE THIS..." She began to move the vacuum back and forth, and as she did so, the dirt was sucked into the vacuum. Some of it still remained, but the carpet was practically back to it's original color.

Pandalicious 06-05-2006 11:12 PM

Brittany covered her ears when the professor didn't seem like shutting it off soon. She observed how the dirt got sucked up into the vacum..but to her it was uninteresting as she had seen her Mom do it a million times (and a few times herself) at home. Brittany nodded and smiled to show the Professor she was paying attention though.

Lady Marmalade 06-05-2006 11:21 PM

Ebony watched the Professor vacuum and wrote down some more notes.

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 11:23 PM

Erin watched the vacuum suck up the dirt from the floor. She yawned, feeling a bit bored. Muggle Studies was one of her favorite classes, but Erin sometimes found it tedious, due to the fact that she was muggleborn and knew a lot of the things they talked about already.

lightstar1154 06-05-2006 11:37 PM

Professor Light noticed the students getting slightly bored and decided to let them try. She flicked off the vacuum and said, "Anyone want to pick up some dirt? It's entirely thrilling!" she joked to her students.

"So, who wants to give this a go? Any of our purebloods interested in trying? Everyone can try, but I think it'll be pretty monotonous for anyone who is Muggleborn." she looked at the class ready for a volunteer as she threw some more dirt on the carpet square.

ErinElizabeth 06-05-2006 11:41 PM

Erin glanced around. She didn't really want to get up and demonstrate how to use a vacuum cleaner, but she decided that if no one else did, she would. Erin glanced around, waiting for one of her classmates to volunteer.

Pandalicious 06-05-2006 11:42 PM

Brittany lazily raised her hand, "I'll go if no one else wants to. I'm muggleborn so I know how it works pretty well." She giggled and looked around the classroom for more volunteers.
