Professor Rae opened her classroom a bit earlier than she intended, just to be sure it was clean and ready for her students. It was immaculate, and she fell back into her chair with a happy sigh. With a flick of her wand, the windows opened to let the brisk fall air pour into the room. It was slightly overcast outside, but the fresh air felt just lovely. | |

"Most magic is relatively neutral--it can be used for bad or good. Some magic, however, is evil in its intention through and through. Spells of this kind are often called curses. Curses are spells that are often intended to cause harm to another person. This intention to do harm places that spell into the realm of the Dark Arts. However, simply casting a Curse spell doesn't mean that a person is using the Dark Arts. Ultimately, the deep, true intention of the caster is what makes the difference."

"I heard several answers I really liked, so let me pull from all of them. Aurora said Dark Magic is that which is used to harm another. While that isn't always true, it is nearly always true. Five points to Ravenclaw. What I love about Alyssa's answer is that she mentioned that Dark Magic tampers with the natural order. Magic typically accomplishes something natural, but when it goes against nature, it is often considered Dark. Dark creatures, for example, are created rather than being born as a normal creature would be. Five for Hufflepuff. And I absolutely love what Serena said... that Dark magic is dependent on the intent of the witch or wizard casting it. You all could try to cast a dark spell, but without having the power and hatred to actually hurt.... you would not be successful. Ten for Gryffindor."
She smiled at them all before speaking again. "Let me remind you that there is no chatting in this class. Please stay on topic at all times. So... we have a very general idea of what Dark Magic is. It is selfish magic that seeks reward, power, or revenge for the caster at the expense of others. Are all those who cast a Dark spell 'Dark Wizards'?"

"Not all who cast a dark spell are dark wizards. It goes back to the intent of the caster really. One could use a dark spell to simply protect themselves or those the care for." she replies, sitting back, hoping her answer was satisfactory.
