I will arrive a bit late for class today. While you are waiting, please write down the meaning and properties of the following runes:
1. Thurisaz
2. Kaunaz
3. Eihwaz
You may refer to your textbook for your answers.

1. Thurisaz- Magical power- Resist temptations which offer reward through dishonesty or trickery. Thurisaz may also signify a stroke of luck, but is more often a warning that your luck is running out.
2. Kaunaz - Heat, light, enlightenment. - It sheds light on the path, dispels the dark shadows of ignorance, and helps us to see with true discernment.Kauno also represents the natural warmth and companionship of the home fire and thus, good health.
3. Eihwaz - Horse, Momentum, Speed. - Speed of thought or deed. Quick-wittedness. It also represents partnership, trust, loyalty, and faithfulness, such as that between horse and rider, brother and sister, two halves of the whole.
When she finished she sat quiently and waited for Professor O. to return.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Elijah Wilde Graduated | Farmer Carter | | Ama's Secret Lee walked into the Ancient Runes classroom for the fuirst time this year since he had slept in for the last one. He took a seat near the front, he enjoyed the company of Opteryx. afterall he was one of the Professors who was on his side about the Common Rooms being a tad bit suspicious.
However in the classroom no Professor Opteryx could be seen, just a message on the blackboard and a few other early students. Lee removed his necessary equipment from his bag and began his work. Quote:

Thurisaz has many different but alike translations such as monster, giant, devil or a thorn. The Rune can be used for good or chaotic purposes and is normally represented as a weapon, however can be represtented as a defense (thorn bush). It mainly is a warning that luck is running out, but can show luck at times. The interpretation of the Rune is basically you have a lot ofpower within you and you have to use it correctly. Kaunaz
Kaunaz is not the only given name to this rune, it can also be called Kauno, Chozma and many more. Kaunaz is the sixth runic number and its colour is light red this time. The element which represents the Kaunaz Rune is fire also and polarity is female. This Rune has three associated Gods which are Heimdall, Freyja, Frey and the Rune is represented by the planet Venus.
The translation for Kaunaz is a firebrand or torch. The main characteristics of Kaunaz is light, fire, enlightenment, warmth and helps us through the shadows. The rune can also be seen as a dorway from darkness to light. The main interpretation of the rune is that there is new thingsheading your way, you are going to be faced with a new understanding of life and the meaning of it. Eihwaz
Eihwaz is nineteenth runic number and its element is earth and its colour white. This rune as both male and female as its polarity and the associated Gods are Frey, Freyja. The astrological correspondance is Gemini.
The translation of this Rune is just a horse. The characteristics of this rune revolves around speed of either actions or thoughts. The personal interpretation of this runes tells you that you currently have the help you need to you should respect and remain loyal to it for youto move swiftly on.

Tas put her book on the desk and started flipping through it to find the runes she needed, then pulled out the small brochure with brief information and wrote down: Quote:
Also called Thorn
Letter: TH
Old Norse name: Thurs
Flower: honesty
Gem: sapphire
Runic Number: 3
Color: Bright Red
Element: Fire
Polarity: Male
Associated gods: Thor
Astrological Correspondence: Mars
Thurisaz is a very ancient name for Thor, so it's not surprising that it is a most powerful rune. Thurisaz can be used and interpreted as a protection rune. Plants grow thorns to protect themselves, so the logic is clear. Drawing a ring of Thurisaz runes around something is an excellent protection spell.
However, Thurisaz has a dark side. After all, thorns protect by pricking and drawing blood. One should step carefully with this rune and treat it respectfully. It can backfire just as easily as it can work for you.
In a reading, Thurisaz upright stands as a warning to the querent, especially if the querent is acting as though his run of good luck is neverending. Thurisaz often suggests that the querent is being wrongheaded about the issue at hand, and advises the querent to maintain status quo until the period indicated by the runecast is over.
Thurisaz reversed means much the same thing as it does upright, except that the querent may be much more difficult to counsel, much more stubborn and unwilling to heed Thurisaz's warning.
Often, this rune reversed indicates that whatever run of good luck the querent has been operating on is about to end. Batten down the hatches!

Alternative Names
Anglo-Friesian/Germanic: Kauno
Norse (Viking): Kaunaz, Kaun
Old English: Ken, Cen
Other Names/Spellings: Chozma, Kano, Kauna, Kaunan,
Kaunaz, Kenaz, Kusmas
Pronunciation: Cow-noh
English Letter Equivalent
Hard C as in cat. K as in king.
Translation
A firebrand or torch. In some translations, an ulcer, wound or opening.
Meaning
Heat, light, enlightenment. Possibly mistaken: burning. an opening, ulcer or injury and thus mental anguish.
Characteristics
Kauno's main significance is related to fire, light, warmth, enlightenment and knowledge. It sheds light on the path, dispels the dark shadows of ignorance, and helps us to see with true discernment. It suggests that understanding must lead to action, and light in the darkness implies spiritual illumination. Kauno also represents the natural warmth and companionship of the home fire and thus, good health.
In it's rather suspect "ulcer" translation it can represent a doorway or portal leading from darkness to light. It could also be taken as a warning to beware sources of heat or light, or of physical danger. So, if you are using this interpretation, take care against accidents, treat any illness or infirmity, and resolve your mental dilemmas.
Personal Interpretation
You are coming into a new understanding of life and its meaning. New insights await, but don’t be complacent. Use this new understanding or it will be worthless. Look for ways to use your insights for the good of yourself and others. Enlightenment is replenishable. The more you use, the more knowledge you gain. Enlightenment itself is not the goal, it is just the starting point of a great adventure that will show you great wisdom and understanding if you proceed with truth and honesty.
Reverse
Cold, darkness, lack of knowledge or insight. For the wound-ulcer interpretation: healing, improvement in health.
Converse
Beware hidden danger. What appears to be the true path may be a false trail. Something dark or cold may conceal great energy. For the wound-ulcer interpretation: treat a minor medical condition before it worsens.
Runic Number: 6
Gem: bloodstone
Color: Light Red

Polarity: Female

Old English: Eh, Oe or Eoh
Other Names/Spellings: Aihws, Ehol, Ehwar, Eol, Eow,
Eykur, Eys, Ior
Pronunciation: Ay-wahz
English Letter Equivalent
E as in end, EE as in sheet
Translation
Horse
Meaning
Horse, beast of burden, steed or mount. Momentum, Speed.
Characteristics
Speed of thought or deed. Quick-wittedness. Forward progress, purposeful motion. Willingness. Sure-footed, confident, loyal.
Ihwaz represents the horse. The speed, strength, and beauty of a horse makes it much more than a means of transport. It is a sacred animal, a vehicle for material and spiritual advancement. Ehwaz implies controlled change, progress, and sometimes a journey. It also represents partnership, trust, loyalty, and faithfulness, such as that between horse and rider, brother and sister, two halves of the whole.
Personal Interpretation
You have the support you need to make swift progress towards your goal. But you must be loyal and supportive to those around you, as they are to you. The horse is proud, but that does not impede its purpose. So while you can be proud of your achievements, you must remain humble to ensure your journey reaches a successful conclusion.
Reverse
Lethargy, retrograde motion, regression. Muddled thinking. Reluctance. Diffidence. Becoming lost or bemused.
Converse
That which appears stagnant will suddenly move. Someone willing or confident will be up to no good.

Touy read the posting on the board and took out parchment and quill writing down Thurisaz:meaning; Magical power, the forces of chaos or of evil.. Temptation. A Warning.
Characteristics
Threats from persons of power or position. Resist temptations which offer reward through dishonesty or trickery. Heed the omen of dishonour or physical harm.
The energy of Thurisaz can be used for good or for chaos. It represents the forces of the human psyche, including anger and lust. The thorn is a symbolic weapon. It can pierce, stab or tear. But it can also be protective, like a thorny hedge. Thurisaz may also signify a stroke of luck, but is more often a warning that your luck is running out. Kaunaz:Meaning:Heat, light, enlightenment. Possibly mistaken: burning. an opening, ulcer or injury and thus mental anguish.
Characteristics:Kauno's main significance is related to fire, light, warmth, enlightenment and knowledge.
Eihwaz:Meaning: Yew tree, archer's bow, weapon. Magic, deflection, prevention. Characteristics
topazIhwaz is the symbol of rune magic. Avertive, deflective or defensive power is yours. Patience, perseverance, foresight and protection against unexpected attack. Wisdom in adversity.
The Yew tree has mistakenly been linked with death because of the ancient practice of planting yew hedges around graveyards. Because Ihwaz is rune number 13, that is the origin of the "unlucky thirteen" superstition of Anglo-Saxon culture.
But the real reason the Yew was planted was to keep out unwanted scavenging animals - the evergreen Yew is both poisonous and impenetrable year-round. These Yews - now grown to huge gnarled old trees - are still to be found in many early British churchyards.
Ihwaz should not be feared, because it also means continuity and endurance. The best longbows were always made from yew trees. As well as being strong, long-lasting, and flexible, they contained protective magic. Thus, Ihwaz also represents safety from attack and a weapon of defence.

Aurora took out some parchment and stared writing down:
Aurora de Lalonde
1st Year
Ravenclaw
Ancient Runes Lesson #2 Thurisaz
Symbols: Thorn, protection from evil, luck ending
Myths and deities: frost-giants, Loki
Interpretation: Thurisaz is a symbol of protection, luck, new possibilities, and good health (minor). The meaning of this rune in your casting will depend greatly on the surrounding runes. Being a rune designed after Thor's Hammer, it can give you great protection and strength when needed. It may also be indicating a lightening bolt of good luck. This good luck will probably not be from something that you expect, and you probably will not see it coming. Thurisaz, although, can be a tricky rune. It may also be indicating that your luck is about to end, so take care not to push yourself. If surrounded by negative runes, or "warning" runes, it may be indicating that you are being strong-headed and stubborn. At this time you might do best by deferring opinions and decisions or seeking a second opinion. It may also be indicating that your "opposition" is morally, physically, or financially stronger than you.
Upright position: A dilemma will occur for you. You
must make an important decision. Think it through then act. Sometimes it is
strongly advised to be very careful in making any important decision hastily and
beware of evil, danger, untruths, and/or betrayal.
Inverse position: do not make hasty thoughtless decisions. Think first
everything through or you will regret your decision or what is to come of the
situation bringing bad results to your relationships and/or family. You may be
about ready to run across someone older and wiser then yourself. Look to the
surrounding runes, Ansuz may be indicating that is time for you to do some
careful thinking and / or seek the advice of others. May also indicate that you
will soon be learning a new "trade", or you are about to get some good schooling
in a certain area.
Use for: As an aid in the process of learning, assistance in meditating and attaining self-discipline, for clearing up the meaning and essence of a grave situation. Ehwaz
Symbols: The Sacred Horse and rider, movement, change, travel
Myths and deities: Sleipnir, Freya's feather cloak
Interpretation: transport, movement, assistance and help, energy, power,
communication, willpower, imprudence.
Upright position: Change of residence, changing job positions, promotions, a change is coming up for the better. This rune stands for gradual developmental and steady progress.
Inverse position: be wary of deals not going through
Use for: For realization of power, establishment of communication, for casting spells Kaunaz
Astrology Sign : Aries.
The God connected to the Kaunaz Rune is Heimdall.
This Rune concerns female influence.
It may also indicate sexuality.
A new love arrives that lights a bonfire in your heart.
Success is indicated by this Rune.
Reverse : Loss of friendship.

Graduated | Professor Opteryx finally made his appearance, trailing half-melted snow from his brown winter cloak and deerstalker hat. The caretaker Borr was not going to like that mess one bit. "I will assume that you've all behaved yourselves in my absence, since my classroom is still intact," Opteryx joked cheerily, hanging up his hat and cloak on the stand and pulled out his wand. "Accio," he incantantated, summoning all the parchments where the students were doing classwork on into a more-or-less neat pile on his desk. "Anyone have any questions about the three runes you all wrote on before we start the lesson?" He asked while ruffling through the parchment sheets, both scanning over and shuffling them into a neater pile.

Graduated | "I picked these three runes to show that each rune has a very different property or affect on a string of runes put together. Thurisaz for example is often regarded as the most powerful rune on its own, having links to the Norse god Thor, but it's also regarded as a rune with darker or more sinister connotations than the rest. Kauno's meaning and properties are disputed somewhat, as some maintain that the meaning of 'ulcer' or 'wound' is a mistranslation." "Also," Opteryx said with an amused smile as he glanced through the pile of parchment, "Each rune has different names or variation thereof of spelling. I see that most of you wrote down the properties of Ehwaz when the rune you were supposed to look up was Eihwaz or Ihwaz, Eihwaz being the Norse name for the rune. Those two are easily mistaken for the other, and it wouldn't be good if one accidentally substituted Ihwaz for Ehwaz while attempting a runic spell." "Well then, while we're on that topic, let's start off the lesson by describing Ihwaz. What does Ihwaz represent?"

she walked into the class sat down got out her notebook and wrote down the meanings Thurisaz
Also called Thorn
Letter: TH
Old Norse name: Thurs
Flower: honesty
Gem: sapphire
Number: 5
Kaunaz
Letter/phonic: k, c
Keywords: Illumination, healing, inspiration, resolution, desire, knowledge.
Kaunaz is the cleansing fire, a new light to illuminate all that is dark in your life. The sunburst clarity of a new dawn, after what seems an eternal night, helps you see what lies ahead.
The cauterising flame of Kaunaz can alleviate illness or help you to climb out of a rut that has been hiding you from the world. This is a most important Rune for its healing attributes. Good health and increased drive are afore.
Sudden inspiration may help you understand things more clearly. Artists lose that block, scientists find solutions, and mere men find priority.
Stoke your inner flame to bring about new desires and aspirations. You can use your accumulated knowledge to further yourself, rather than keeping it all in your head for none to see and learn.
You can help to shed light on another's problems simply by holding up your torch. With fresh input and some lateral thinking, you might provide a resolution they have been searching for.
The fire burns bright. Eihwaz
Yew Tree, Rebirth
Letter- Ei
Divinatory Meaning- Enlightenment, endurance, protection, initiation or test, change, initiation, confrontation of fears, turning point, death, transformation
Magickal Uses- To bring about profound change, to ease a life transition
Myths & Deities- Hel, Yggdrasil
Symbolism- This rune symbolizes protection, rebirth and occult knowledge. It is never an evil rune.
Weapons decided if you would keep your land and resources. To defend
themselves, the Vikings found the use of the Yew tree and made bows. This tree
gave them the ability to defend themselves. The characteristic crackle of the wood
soothed them during the cold winter nights. Meditate on the actions necessary to
defend our position in our lives and to enjoy the things we have worked for in our "down" time. Keep learning the best ways to defend against the malicious actions of others and strive to never be caught off-guard.

Mandi raised her hand and answered the Professors question. "I believe that it says that Ihwaz is the symbol of ancient magic. That avertive, deflective or defensive power is yours. That it gives you Patience, preseverence, foresight and protection against unexpected attack. And it gives you Wisdom in adversity. So, Professor wouldn't that make it a rune not to be feared?
