Professor Opteryx nodded as he listened to each student's answer. "Yes, most of you are on the right track. Three points to everyone who answered, good job. I'd like to point out that there are a few different systems of ancient runic systems, the best known are the Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxxon Futhorc, and the Younger Futhark. Usage of the Elder Futhark goes back as far as 150 AD. Runes were eventually replaced with the Latin alphabet in 700 AD for central Europe and 1400 in Scandinavia and are now rarely used by Muggles.
"As many of you have mentioned, runes were used mainly as a writing system and, in some cases, as a means of divination, as well as charms. How exactly the runes are charmed is a tricky process and isn't well documented. Can anyone give me a reason why that would be so? Feel free to make some guesses."

Meghan raised her hand again, "Well Rune comes from the Norse word Runa which translates to mean 'Secret or mystery.' So maybe the fact that they kept their writings so secret was why it was given the name Rune." Meghan said carefully hoping she got the information correct.

"The proceedure for activating or spelling runes might be poorly documented because nobody wanted to write it down, out of fear of being discovered, or because they didn't want their methods to be used by other wizards against them. Runes do NOT have to be charmed, of course, but without a spell to activate the rune, it's simply writing."
"Now, suppose we all knew how to charm a rune into activating. Why would it then be difficult to create a runic spell with more than one runic character? For example, a sentance written entirely in runes?"
