The Defense classroom was looking clean and bright, and Rae smiled at the obvious effort of the house elves. She settled behind her desk with a quill and parchment, prepared for her first lesson of the term.

Mercurio slumped down on the table, boredly. He eyed his house-elf Adolph from the corner of his eye. The elf was sitting bolt-upright on his table, quivering with ethusiasm. Adolph loved question-and-answer sessions. Despite the fact that Mercurio hated these sort of things, and seldom volunteetered to bring his house points, for the whole of four years at Hogwarts, Adolph hadn't stopped hoping.
"You know this one, Master!" he hissed, bouncing up and down.
Mercurio played with his quill. "No, Adolph."
His house-elf slumped into the ink.
