Professor Fox opened the Arithmancy classroom and stepped in. He conjured a large box to appear on the instructor's desk at the front of the room. He then removed a small, old wooden box and set it near the front of the desk. Fox wrote silently on the board at the front:

Applied Arithmancy: Spell numerization
We will be continuing using concepts covered in last year's courses. This term we will be applying the theory we learned last term directly to curse breaking.

New Students:
If you are unfamiliar with the matereial covered last term, simply try to keep up. This material will be new for everyone, so try your best to learn as we go and interject your ideas and opinions when asked. I will not deduct points for incorrect answers, and questions are always welcome. However, we stay on topic in my classroom, and I don't tolerate rule breakers or class clowns.

Having written that, he turned his attention to the now empty seats and waited for everyone to begin arriving.

Meghan looked at the girl who had spoken. Her mouth open in a kind of shock. What? It confused her a little but she wrote it down in her notes anyways...if she didn't write it down now she would forget it and than...well...she would be in trouble.

Tiffany began scribbling the notes, she wasn't quite sure about all the professor was talking about but wrote it anyways.

Professor Fox nodded. "A good observation Ms. Harrison. I suppose I will fill in the rest. No need to worry, but it's good everyone for you to refresh your memory every once in a while." He turned to the board and began writing.

Numbers and their characteristics
0 : Emptiness, change, decay, nothing
1 : Identity, unity, interconnectedness
2 : Duality, understanding, awareness, humans/human magic
3 : Intelligence, problem solving, luck, house elves/house elf magic, complex thought
4 : Organization, space, location, information
5 : Reality, safety, physical world, physical touch
6 : Natural and intuitve intelligence, stability, timelessness
7 : Magic, mysticism, magical permanence
8 : Complex thought/reasoning, fluidity, navigation, movement
9 : Power/strenth, very complex thought, short-lived, immediacy

"This is a list that, while brief, captures more or less the essential characteristics we will need during this term. Now then, I will simply remind everyone, that these are the magical characteristics that each number has. Therefore, can anyone wager a guess as to what this implies for combinations of numbers, such as say... 42?" He examined the class, encouragingly.

Amber joy hesutantly raised her hand and said ina quiet voice "For combinations of numbers, would it be correct to say that both characteristics of the single digits are present? Such as for 42, organization and understanding would be present?"

Alex gave a small nod while she racked her brain for just about anything they she remembered from his class, last term.

"The number zero is a number to which the algebra rule that states that anything added to the number zero will result the original numbe applies. Also, any real number multiplied by zero will equal an answer of zero. To add to that, zero is a number which means nothing, null, void or an absence of value.

Zero is both a number and a numeral. The natural number following zero is one and no natural number precedes zero. Zero may or may not be counted as a natural number, depending on the definition of natural numbers.

It's the only whole number that is neither a prime nor a composite number."

After a small pause, she added, "There's also the Zeroeth law which statesthere's a constant force acting on all things making them to tend to decay until inexistance."

"It depends, Professor. Since 4 works to locate things and 2 works to understand things more easily, I'm taking maybe a spell to locate things?" she frowned.

"But the again, 42 is also a multiple of 7..." the girl drifted off.

Professor Fox nodded as they answered the question. "Excellent addition Ms. Kay. Good answer Ms. Joy, everyone is doing very well today." He flipped some notes then examined the class. "That's right, larger numbers contain combinations of the individual numbers and therefore have combined characteristics of the individual numbers. Now, would everyone take a few moments and with a partner, could you please compose a list of what you think the characteristics of the following numbers are..."

"If you don't know anyone, simply introduce yourself and older students, if a younger student would like to join your group, please be accomodating. If you can't find a single partner, groups of three would also be acceptable. We'll move one to the next exercise once everyone has accomplished this." He then flipped his notes and watched the class.
