Kate walked and grabbed all the containers. This was the hard part because removing body parts from any kind of animal kind of made her sick to her stomach. Kate started removing the eyeballs from their sockets. Their was a gross sound as the eyeball detached from whatever was holding it in the head. Kate almost wanted to puke. She barely made it through all of them when she realized she needed to remove the tails too. Kate felt even more sick. She moved the scapel like instrument from her pack and began removing all the tails. When she had each properly separated and had cleaned up her area, she closed her eyes trying to recover from this experience. She was not to be very quezy, but dismemberment was new to her. Kate hoped her stomach was not going to betray her. She finally settled down and waited for the professor to conitnue. She knew this was an important subject, so she was going to have to learn to get over this, Kate thought to herself.

Finally regaining enough courage to do this, Nadia took the small knife, ready to cut everything but the eyes to make they come intact. So there she was, the knife getting nearer dangerously yet slowly. But. No sooner she has set the knife on the newt-- ACK. There was the shierk of the girl! It was only a matter of luck that when Nadia juped of surprise, the knife missed the eye and did no harm to it. If fact, she slipped and did a small slize on the snot. Ugh.

She finally turned to the source, still a bit alarmed like most others who were looking at the girl who had rushed to the front of the classroom. Nadia bit her lip, her instincs were reaching forwards and try to help but as she recalled, she didn't thought she knew any helpful spell for this situation. Plus, she might mess up further, the professor sure was better in capasitation. Then she looked Peony offer a bit of help. Ah! Why didn't she thought of it?

Anyways, while the professor addressed the girl she should go back to work... speaking of it, who was the girl? Nadia looked back up, narrowed her eyes and finally made it up. Oh, poor Naya, it was her first potion, too. Let's hope she wasn't inhibited from the subject after this.

So, yeah, back to the newts. First eye first. As previously calculated, she could cut the skin around the eye to let it off more easily. It would also give a better shot at the nerves that connected the eye to the rest of the creature, or well, the brain she suppossed. Carefully cutting any link that was there, Nadia watched with some satisfaction the now free eyeball. Now how to dump it to the jar? If she tried with her fingers (not to mention it would be... yuki), she might press too hard. She was tempted to grab the newt all together and shake it over the jar until the eyeball fell.

Bitting her lip, she considered some further and then reached for her wand. This surely shouldn't trouble the professor, right? Considering this, she performed a Wingardium Leviosa and levitated the eyeball all the way to the second jar. Merlin but this felt like detention. She turned the newt over and started with the second eye.

SweetCatastrophe 09-18-2005 03:20 PM

Anila poked the newt. Twice. Gulping, she picked up a spoon-like utensil and poked it again. She took a shallow breath and leaned over the newt.

Using her thumb and forefinger, she pulled apart the skin around the eye. Then, she dug the edge of the utensil into the gap she just made, scooping around the eye. It popped out with a shlick-pop sound, and she tipped it into the vial.

Now. Cut off the tail. Using a scalpel, she started sawing at the tail. It went smoothly until the scalpel found the bone. No matter how hard she hacked, scraped or sawed, the tail would snap. She was left with a mess of a half dismembered newt and nasty perservation fluid. Anila opened her mouth to call the professor, but he seemed tied up with a girl with bubbly hands.

She sighed and looked down at her newt.

Laurasia_Malfoy 09-18-2005 05:38 PM

Laurasia suddenly became aware of a student screaming. She looked up & her mouth dropped open. "Naya!" She watched as Peony performed the cleansing spell on her hands which, thankfully, got rid of the juice that was causing the burns. However, she was stil;l suffering with the burns themselves.

Quickly, Laurasia dug into her bag & pulled out a vial full of of a thick orange paste. She ran over to where Naya was & uncorked the vial. "Give me your hands," she demanded of her friend. She thickly applied the burn-healing paste to Naya's hands, which began to make a quiet hissing sound as it cooled off the heat from the burns.

She looked up at Naya with sympathetic eyes. "Thank goodness for all of that extra studying I did last year, eh?" Laurasia turned towards Professor Branxton. "Sir, I've finished with my newts. Is it okay if I escort Naya to the Hospital Ward so Healer Brunel can bandage her hands?"

Backslash 09-18-2005 05:45 PM

Deciding that the girl was being attended to, Jaren went back to the task of removing newt's eyes and tails with little incident. The first newt he completed was a messy job even to his standards, but he got the hang of it by the second.

The girl did - though jerkily, as though she didn't really want to - and in a wand-wave, the juice that had been burning into her hand had disappeared. Still, the red welts and blisters continued to gurgle and pulse painfully as she waited to be dismissed to the Hospital.

Jenna was too disgusted by slicing her newt's tails to have noticed the commotion, but when the screams reached multiple people, she jerked her head towards them, as if coming out of a transe.

"Iphigeneia!" She looked around hastily for her wand. "Hold on! Hold on!" It was under one of the newts. "Ew.." She picked grabbed her wand. "Aha!" She turned, and just like that, the problem had subsided. A Ravenclaw had cleaned up the mess. Well, the goo anyway.

"Yikes." Jenna looked painfully at Iphigeneia's hand as she sat down. "Is there anything I can do to help?" She looked up, waiting for a response.

ooc: Um... these are newts. They aren't even magical creatures. Their juices don't cause huge welts or anything. They're just ordinary everyday newts. I would have had the professor tell you to use gloves (note that he said NOT to use gloves) or be careful if they were hazardous in any way. o_O I'm going to disregard this post as unrealistic. I like drama as much as the next person but this was ridiculous (though, not as bad as the pet dragon we had a few terms back).

ooc: Okay, it seems as if you people are too impatient to wait for me to post. I apologize for being absent yesterday and I really hate to do this but, apparently I need to close my classes when I'm not around. I like to keep them open so as many people as possible can participate, not just the ones that are online when I'm online but, clearly this is impossible. We have people suffering from injuries like welts from simple newt juice (I've gotten newt juice on me people, it doesn't even burn), people not reading my posts, and other people just RPing like the professor isn't there. So, from now on, I'm afraid you'll only get to RP in my classes when I'm around to monitor them. *sigh*

OOC: Sorry Ma'am. *Hides*

Ozzy fastened the top on the jar that was now full of freshly plucked newt eyes then capped the other that was full of tails. He looked over to the Professor then scribbled down some notes.

ooc: Pets Kris then hides for breaking ooc-rules :sofa:

Jaren finished harvesting the eyes and tail of the fifth dead newt and was moving on to the sixth when he realized the sixth only had one eye, for inexplicable reasons. With a mental shrug he kept going.

Padfoot 09-19-2005 12:33 AM

After carefully seperating the eyes, tails, and bodies into their seperate jars Heshasa screwed the tops back on the jars and palced them in front of her. After taking a few more notes Heshasa wrote a small memo in the corner of her parchmant, "I do not like dismemberment," She looked up attentivley waiting for more instructions. She already was enjoying this class even if her stomach didn't.

ooc: *petpets Kris* Could it be allergic reaction to Newts juice? http://snitchseeker.com/vb3/images/smilies/huh.gif

Having successfully removed the eyes and tail of the first newt and then taking the second and then the following, soon she grew more confident of what she was doing. Even started using her hands instead of magic to take the eyes, placing the wand on the side of the table.

The problem came when something, a hair or whoknowns, started tickling her on the face. She tried to take it of without her hands, failed, used her hands just to find out it was covered in the weird substance surrounding the newts - her next reflect was cleaning it on her... oh great, now her robes were dirty.

Nadia reached for her wand to clean her hands, but in that her hands were so slippery, she couldn't grip it and it fell to the floor. Nadia followed to take the wand, but kicked it and it went further away. Nadia frowned at her own complete lack of coordination. Hopping off the desk and crawling away where the wand had lie, she finally was careful enough to hold it tightly and securely.

And then, she hit her head on the desk of the student under which the wand hand landed when she tried to stand up.

His wand appeared in his hand as he dropped his arms and flicked it toward the blackboard:

He started pacing as he read from the board. "You've all given very apt descriptions for what potions are. This is a simplified and to the point definition: potions are simply a magical liquid, concoction, or mixture and they have innumerous uses.

"I know you are all bored unto death of hearing these introductory lectures but, again please bear with me so we can quickly move on. I will assign homework after each class pertaining to the potion we will be brewing in the next class. I will post an answer key prior to the start of class as well as class notes which should be reviewed before you even think about taking out your cauldron. This leads us directly into the second part of our discussion: Brewing Safety. We will now go around the room once again and I would like each of you to give me one safety guideline you should follow when brewing potions."

Rachel copied down everything on the board into her potions notebook and raised her hand. "You must make sure u know what ingredients you're putting into your cauldron because an explosion would not be pretty."

ooc:lol i know im kinda late..sorry

Rose_Dawson 09-19-2005 02:51 AM

Rachel got up slowly from her seat and walked over to where the Professor had the newts and vials. She picked up to vials and the newts. When she got to her table again she peered at the Newts grimacing.
Well here goes nothing.
She put on her gloves. She soon started to carefully squeeze the eys out and into the vial. When she was finished with that she took her pocketknife out from her potions supplies and started to chop off the newts tails finely. She then waited for the Professor's next instructions.

Biochemkris 09-19-2005 12:31 PM

Professor Branxton was looking over the work of a Ravenclaw when he heard the thud. He rushed over to find a student on the ground. "Miss?" he said, tapping her lightly upon the shoulder to ascertain whether she was concious or not.

Mistress Vondella 09-19-2005 01:40 PM

Linnea had grabbed a newt and had stood staring at it for several minutes. It wasn't the slime that bothered her, it was the pandamonium that erupted about them that caused her nervousness. Well, and that the last potions classes she had involved singing muggle campfire songs and cookies.

She looked around and noticed that most of the other students were able to accomplish the feat without a problem, save for Nadia who, it seemed, had banged her head. She easily sliced the tail off, less messy and a good start. Then, she stared at the eyes.

She smiled, she had seen her aunt do similar things on people. Not with their eyes, but other injuries. She held it upside down, gently moved the eye to the side, and clipped the thing holding the eye in place. For good measure she clipped the other one and put it into the jar. She then waited for further instructions.

If gloves were such a problem he had a quick temper, Noel's matched it, "Sorry, sir, it's just out of habit," she took off her gloves. Not to mention disgust at the thought of ripping a lizard's eye out with my bare hand. she thought to herself.

As soon as the head had hit the desk, it dropped to the floor, or rather, to Nadia's hands on the floor. The girl in question groaned and she was conscious, but she didn't move immediately because of the now stabbing pain on the back of her head. When she slowly, and now more carefully, raised her head again, it was with watery eyes and pounding urges to kick the offending desk.

She was oh so generous she didn't hit the desk not to bother the person who was working on it. That without considering that she had already moved the desk with her head in that amazing display of clumsiness; the person owning the desk could already be missing a finger mid way cutting a newt tail.

Turning around, reaching for the bloody wand before turning to the professor, she looked up to see him - them? - looking back at her. With a small voice she didn't recognized as hers (raspy, with her throat dry), she unwittingly responded, "Yes professor?"

Biochemkris 09-19-2005 09:05 PM

"Perhaps I should assist you to the Hospital Wing," he said, crouching down to help support her as she sat up, clearly a bit disoriented by that nasty knock on the head. He looked up at the rest of the class. "I think we've done enough for today, class is dismissed. Please leave your jars and vials where they are and I shall collect them later, just make sure to label them so you will receive credit."

Professor Branxton turned back to the Slytherin. "Are you dizzy?"

ginnymel 09-19-2005 09:12 PM

Ginn places her vials next to each other and labels them with her information.
She cleans up her desk, packs her belongings back into her book bag and heads out of the class, pleased with herself for another good class.

Backslash 09-19-2005 09:25 PM

Finishing the last newt and collecting the vials in front of him to label. When he was done cleaning up he turned to see Nadia had been the one who had caused the loud "thud" and appeared to be in a significant amount of pain.

Didn't this already happen two terms ago?

"I could assist her to the Hospital Wing, Professor," Jaren offered.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 09:29 PM

"Ah, no, that won't be -" Nadia tried interjecting and cleared her throat while the professor addressed the class, then turned fast around to, again, attempt saying she was alright - and she had been, the spinning came when she turned around too fast. She screwed her eyes shut, then opened them back...

"I am," she started again, while trying to stand up helping herself on the nearby desk, "fine. Honestly -" It kind of defeated the purpose that she wobbled to the side at the end. Making a point that she was not dizzy was actually dizzing her.

And she was still worried whose finger she had mutilated (in nicer words, whose job she had disrupted with her head banging on their desk). It turned to be Anila the owner of said desk. There was a newt on her face. Nadia tried to gave her an appologetical look (it came more like a pained grimace) as she pocketed her wand with all and preservation fluid.

So back at the professor, and now Jaren... "Don't worry, you don't have to, I think I'm fine enough. Just, a bit dizzy." She kicked herself mentally. "I mean, just a second sitting down -" or laying down "- and I should be fine." Fine fine... very fine...

Biochemkris 09-19-2005 09:38 PM

"Please assist her to the Hospital Wing," he said to the Slytherin prefect, his eyes never leaving the wobbly girl. The last thing he needed was a major injury on his first day teaching.

Backslash 09-19-2005 09:39 PM

"At least get out of there before you hit your head again," Jaren said calmly, bag slung over one shoulder and offering one hand to Nadia.

Iphigeneia 09-19-2005 09:45 PM

Iphigeneia glared at the Professor; he didn't seem to be too bothered by her injuries. She looked down at her hands and stopped. She blinked several times. Much of the swelling had gone down and all that was left of the welts were small bright red blisters. Iphigeneia breathed steadily again - her hands weren't going to fall off after all. It was then, as the panic was subsiding, that she remember the salve she had packed at the very last minute - just in case.

She reached gingerly inside the side pocket of her satchel and pulled out a small metal tub. She read the small print that glowed on the side:

Salvadore's Solve-all Salve: For Seriously Smarting Salamander Sores (Use only as directed.)

Iphigeneia groaned inwardly. She had had reactions to salamanders in the past - hence the salve - but she had forgotten that newts were a type of salamanders! What a complete fool she had been. She looked sheepishly at her classmates.

"Sorry," she mumbled as she carefully spread the salve on her hands, "I'm ok. Thank you though." She gave a grateful smile to all those who had offered to help her.

When the blisters had dried up to several small bumps - that salve was incredible - Iphigeneia returned to her table and, this time using some blunt tweezers to keep from touching the newts, she finished removing the second eye of the newt, extracted the newt tail, and labelled her two jars. She blushed - she had only two jars, while everyone else seemed to have six, seven, eight jars. But even though her first Potions lessons hadn't been as smooth as she would have liked it, she felt as though there was still plenty she had learned. With a sigh, she shouldered her satchel and left for the next class.

ooc: Thanks for the tip Kris.
