Kristal copied down the notes on the board, thought a moment, and allowed her hand to shoot up in the air. "Always follow directions precisely as they are stated. Never add an ingredient "just for the fun of it." Also, do not touch any of the potions. They may dammage your skin or worse."

Leeness 09-16-2005 11:55 PM

Lee raised his hand to put his input into the question, an answer no one else had given yet "I suggest that you wear gloves when handling ingredients that may be dangerous if touched by bare flesh. Also i recommend that if you are working with a partner or if someone is working beside you, you should ensure you trust them so that they won't tamper with your Potion whilst your back is turned," Lee said rather intelligently.

Rumor Black Remus 09-17-2005 01:19 AM

Rem ran as fast as she could to the Potions class. She'd had to run from detention to her dorm to get her book and back.Entering the room she found an empty seat in the back and pulled out her book and quill.

LilyBlack 09-17-2005 01:27 AM

Lily tiredly raised her hand."If you do not understand the directions or get confused ask before you start or continue with your potions."She said weakly.

Martha 09-17-2005 02:13 AM

Martha raises her hand and says, "Always pay attention to what you are doing, daydreaming while brewing a potion can be extremely hazardous."

ooc: tee hee I always think the same thing. In fact, the number of times we went over safety stuff, even in advanced labs and when I got my job (every year we get recertified), is probably the reason I do this EVERY term. Sorry guys. Gah, bad admin, breaking her own no ooc rule. *slaps self* Anywho...

"Wonderful answers however, there are quite a few of you who will need to pay closer attention to the instructions when brewing potions than you do when I ask you a question. I asked for one safety tip per student, not a list," he said sounding a little annoyed as he cleaned his glasses again.

He sighed and replaced his glasses before looking out at the glass with a stern look. "Again, those who participated will receive points. Your grades in this class will always be determined in this manner. You will receive credit for homework and class participation. Are there any questions so far?"

"No sir." Rave said quietly

demented_death_eater 09-17-2005 03:00 AM

Kay listened to the professor's question and shook her head while mouthing the word "No."

TomFeltonLuver 09-17-2005 03:01 AM

Lauren listened to the words, and then shook her head.
"No, Sir. No questions" She said with a smile.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-17-2005 03:05 AM

Did he said that? Oops. Got a bit carried away up there...

Nadia stood there and tried to look a bit invisible. Well, she hadn't been the only one, guess so... her concentration was not what it used to be, that one was pretty much clear. At the opening to ask question, Nadia rather woul use that time to arrage her things only... Well, she did have a question, but she didn't think it was the due time. Would have to wait.

Weasly_Gurl 09-17-2005 03:06 AM

Krista took a few notes then looked up. "no sir" she said

secretlover101 09-17-2005 03:07 AM

"No sir" Emily said quietly to herself.

Peony doodled into the Potions notebook. She had a habit of not listening in class. Oh, alright, it was a bad habit, but it wasn't like she didn't pay attention because... Oh there's a pretty butterfly...

Peony had short attention spans.

Someone as accident-prone as she was really should have been listening but then and again, who didn't need a vacation from school in the Hospital Wing?

babydriver27 09-17-2005 03:20 AM

Erica raised her eyebrows at the professor's annoyed tone, but did not say anything about it. Calmly, she continued taking notes and waited for the professor to continue on with the lesson.

Biochemkris 09-17-2005 03:54 AM

"No?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow. "Very well then. I need to restock the general supplies cabinet with some prepared ingredients. I would like you to assist me and practice some basic potion making techniques at the same time."

Professor Branxton flicked his wand and the blackboard disappeared, revealing a table that had been standing behind it, out of sight. On one end of the table were several jars of newts all neatly lined up. On the other end were vials containing a clear liquid. "You will each take a jar of newts and two of the empty vials. You will place the eyes, intact, in one vial and the tails in the other. There rest of the newt can go back into the jar when you are finished. Remember, you must be very careful in order to extract the eyes without damaging them or your fingers. I would not recommend wearing gloves, however because they will hinder you more than necessary. You may begin."

He gestured toward the table and moved to sit behind his desk.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-17-2005 04:02 AM

A bit at lost, no sooner the professor commanded they shall start, Nadia raised her hand, "Professor, are we allowed to use magic for this task? Say, the Levitation Charm?"

She understood why some younger students couldn't, but if the task was not damaging the eyes... well. Just say Nadia was more trusting of her magic than her hand-eye coordination.

Weasly_Gurl 09-17-2005 04:05 AM

Krista smield and walked up to get everything. this was just like what she did in muggle school, but with a frog. she walked back to her stool and sat down, she placed everything thing, and began to work, it wasnt very hard.

Mrs. Weasley 09-17-2005 04:07 AM

Terry takes out her potion supplies and heads up to the table. She gets a jar of newts and two vials as the Professor requested. Returning to her seat, she removes a newt from the jar and examines it. The eyes of a newt are small and the area around them is difficult to penetrate. It will take a steady hand and the proper tools to successfully remove the eye whole. Terry looks through her equipment and decides on an ancient muggle devise, a marrow spoon to use. It has a long narrow spoon section with a sharp end that will make it ideal to remove the eye with. She holds the newt with her left hand and scoups the eye out with her right. Terry then places the whole eye in the first vial and returns the stopper. Removing the tail will be a much easier task, it will only require a sharp knife. She lays the newt flat on the table making sure to spread the tail out. Terry then cuts it using her knife and places the tail in the second vial. She repeats this process with the next newt.

demented_death_eater 09-17-2005 04:57 AM

Kay walked over to the table and picked up a jar of newts and two empty vials. She carefully carried the items back to her desk and sat them on the desktop. Kay hesitated for a moment before opening her potions kit and taking out a rolled up dragon hide package that was tied shut with a blue ribbon. She unfastened the ribbon and carefully unrolled it, revealing an assortment of implements, each tucked neatly into its own pouch. Kay looked over the implements and selected what appeared to be a long, slender silver stick. Upon closer look, the stick had a small half-moon shaped curvature at one end. She also selected a small, delicate extracting knife, and rolled up the implement pouch, setting it to one side.

Without any further hesitation, Kay opened the jar of newts and carefully took one out with her left hand. In her right hand, she firmly held the silver instrument and slid the curved end around the newt's eyeball. She heard a faint squelching sound as the eyeball popped loose, and deftly lifted the eyeball out of its socket with the silver instrument. Kay deposited the eyeball into one of the empty vials and then proceeded to remove the other eye. Once the second eye had been removed and placed in the vial, she sat the silver instrument down and picked up the extracting knife. In one skillful swipe, the newt's tail was removed and placed in the second vial. She then placed the newt back into the jar and selected another one. Kay repeated the process until all of the newts in her jar had their eyes and tails removed.

"So we're actually doin potions again" Selena thought "no kum-by-yah- this term....no cookies and gold stars." Selena found herself daydreaming and not really paying attention.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-17-2005 06:28 AM

Since the professor didn't seem to have heard her and because she didn't want to fall behind by comparison to her mates, Nadia watched how people were working and at last took iniciative to actually do the job.

First thing first, she walked forwards and fetched the needed things. On the way back, arms filled with things, she thought she was about to loose balance and to stop herself from a painful and messy fall, reached for the nearest object to stay even. That thing was the head of a dreamy-looking Selena. "Oh, sorry, didn't meant to," she said, looking though the things she was holding, when she finally realized and put the weight of her body in another surfice. "You OK? Sorry." She appologized again and moved all the way to her desk, since it was risky to stay in the middle of the classroom like that anyways, and placed all three jars on her desk. The newt jar was looking particularly... eurgh.

Second thing off, taking the pretty carcass out of the jar. Now where is where magic would have felt better. But, she hadn't exactly been given the thumbs up so... Carefully and trying not to gag, she put on one glove and with that hand pulled the newt from its tail. With a wooden table for suport, she layed the creature there and took the knife. And took a deep breath.

Because the tail thing seemed easier, she started with it instead of the eyes. The gloved hang pressing the body to the table and holding it steady, the other hand placed the edge of the knife the nearest to the start of the tail as possible and then... cut. She will never get used to these things really, she decided. She placed the newly cut tail on one of the empty jars, then closed it. Now, the next things was the eyes. She needed some time to ponder before actually starting this task, for she was sure she was going to mess up.

Leeness 09-17-2005 10:45 AM

"Well this ought to be easy," Lee said shrugging, quite sure of himself. He walked over to the table and the jar with the newt in it under the other. He took it back to his desk to begin.

He decided to take off the newt's tail first because it seemed the easiest. He took his small Potions knife and gently and accuratley cut off the tail of the poor animal. On Lee's forhead sweat was for dripping, he felt like he was in that muggle show 'ER'. He placed the tail in a vial of his and then securley fastened it with a stopper.

"Right, now for the eye," Lee said a little frightened of this task. He decided he would widen the eye socket with some tweasers and remove it by carefully slicing the connection between the eye and the body of the newt. Hopefully the eye would fall out after that. Doing exactly what he had planned he got to the bit where he would tilt the newt upside down and the eye would fall out. Indeed it did, and Lee was to slow to catch it and it rolled on the floor where someone accidentally stood on it.

He let off a sigh, luckily the newt had a remaining eye. He followed his procedure again and the eye fell neatly into place onto his hand. Relieved he placed the jelly like structure of it into another empty vial of his. He placed what was left of the creature into the jar where it once came and then waited for further instructions.

Rosa stood up and fetched a jar with newts in it and two vials. she was still a bit surprised that this was the new professor. she hoped he wouldn't recognise her as the girl who'd asked the time... she avoided to look in the professor's direction as she walked back. this really is a lot like biology, she thought to herself, as she grabbed a newt's tail between the tips of her fingers and put it on the table. then she got her potions knife and looked at the newt. she decided to do the tail first. she cut it off in one fast movement, so that the tail flied up. it didn't go very far, though. she picked it up and put it in one of the vials. then she got out another one of her potions equipments, a needle with a long handle. she put it between the gap of the eyeball and the eyehole and popped it out. the eye rolled around like a marble and she had to put her hand under the edge of the table to catch it when it rolled off. she examined the eye closely and noticed a little pinhole where she'd stuck her needle in it. not completely intact, but she had no idea how else she'd get it out. she put it in the empty vial and started with the other eyeball, careful not to put the needle into it this time.

Erica allowed most of the class to go first in getting their materials before doing so herself. She stood up and grabbed two of the vials with the clear liquid and the jar of newt and, clutching them close lest she drop the whole load, walked back to her table to begin the dissection.

It was absolutely disgusting work, taking out the eyes and tails by hand, and more than once Erica worried to herself that something poisonous would seep in through the skin and do her in later on. As she stared at the intact newt, she wondered if she would be able to stand a job in the field of Potions. It wasn't the lack of wand usage that bothered her, but some of the ingredients needed were just not fit for strong stomachs and she readily remembered her trip into Slug and Jigger's and almost losing her breakfast. But then again, that was after Gringotts and that place really was somewhere she would be able to lose her breakfast.

She slowly loosened one of the newt eyes by gently prying it out with a small pocketknife she had in her potions kit. She wasn't sure it Professor Braxton would approve, but strangely enough, she hadn't done any damage to the eye as of yet. Today, her hand was quite steady and her concentration was in top form. She smiled as the first newt eye came off completely intact and Erica hastened to place it in one of the vials with the clear liquid. She did the same with the other eye, astounded that she managed it so well before starting in on the newt's tail.

The newt's tail seemed to present the bigger problem. Firstly, Erica wasn't sure where the body ended and the tail began. She worried that she would end up cutting off the wrong portion and then the professor would get mad with her. She already had Fox on the black list, no need to add another professor so soon. Erica stepped back for a few moments and watched the other students do their tails first before coming to an estimate as to where to make the cut. She gripped the eyeless newt in one hand and the pocketknife in the other as she sliced the tail off in one quick motion. The cut wasn't as clean as she would've liked it, but it would have to suffice.

She opened up the other vial and placed the tail in there before stuffing the rest of the newt body in it's original jar and turning her attention to the professor for new instructions.

Yuna quietly walked in hoping that the professor wouldnt see her. she sat down at her desk which was at the back of the classroom. She looked at the professor then got all of her eqiupment needed for potions then waited listening to everyone.
