Lesson 2: Mythical Creatures - A reality

Today’s lesson taking place inside, you walk into a large stone classroom with high windows. The room is bright and airy and filled with sounds and smells. The side walls are lined with cages of all shapes and sizes, and up the middle of the room is two long rows of wooden desks with very comfy chairs. At the head of the classroom is a large mahogany desk; behind it is a large tank covered with a sheet to hide it’s content.

Sounds of various animals fill the room and give it a never-ending theme song. As you walk in, the first thing you notice is the beautiful song of a magnificent Phoenix that is sitting on the professor’s desk. Calming you and making you feel less nervous, you walk confidently to find a seat.

Hello! Welcome to Care of Magical Creatures. Please make yourself comfortable as you wait for the rest of the students to arrive. You may look around the room a bit if you wish.

Mistress Vondella 09-19-2005 01:28 PM

Linnea walked into the room and looked around. It appeared as though she were the first one in today. She wandered the room looking at the different animals in cages, her pygmy puffs on either shoulder. After several minutes of the Phoenix song and the theme song of the room, she finally took a seat and waited for class to begin.

Backslash 09-19-2005 02:05 PM

With Edgar insisting on perching on his shoulder for the lesson Jaren entered the classroom to hear the notes of pheonix song--not the first time he had heard such a thing.

He sat down near the back row and prepared to take notes, Edgar making soft chuckling noises to himself.

allucha 09-19-2005 03:01 PM

ali walked into the room, looking forward to the lesson. he saw a magnificent bird which he recognised as a pheonix.

harry_luvr 09-19-2005 03:16 PM

Adz walked in and grinned. She had really enjoyed the last lesson and was looking forward to this one.

"Good afternoon Professor"

Drusilla Black 09-19-2005 03:20 PM

Drusilla walks in feeling a bit tired, so she hurries to the back of the class and takes a seat. After sitting a few seconds, she notices she don´t feel tired at all. Like she would like to sit here with her eyes closed and listen to the Phoenix forever ... Now that was a little frightening thought, so Drusilla shakes her head and takes a careful look around the room without getting up. Her gaze stops at the large tank covered with a sheet. Wonder what´s hidden in there, she thought lazily. We will soon know, I guess.

Leeness 09-19-2005 03:29 PM

Lee walked into the classroom, excited about the second lesson of this term. He took a seat near the front. This class is one he enjoyed, and a Professor he liked, so he trusted himself more to be closer.

He got out his equiment and placed it on the desk in front and then looked around the classroom analysing the many objects and creatures that occupied the classroom.

LilRavenclaw 09-19-2005 03:34 PM

Meghan walked into the classroom just a bit tired from the lack of sleep she recieved. This should be a good lesson. Sitting down in the one of the middle seats Meghan put her bookbag on the table waiting for class to begin.

Christy_Horcrux00 09-19-2005 04:04 PM

Christy walked into the class and took a seat near the window. She took out her school supplies and waited for the class start.

harry_luvr 09-19-2005 04:11 PM

"So what are we learning today professor?" Adz asked, knowing that pretty much everyone was wondering.

angelwing 09-19-2005 04:32 PM

Cass walked in, smiled at Lee ruffling his hair a bit before sitting beside Linny. She put Tumbley out to run around on the table a little bit before making sure it stayed close to her. "Howdy, how are you doing?" she asked her before chuckling at Tumbley who had managed to roll itself into a little ball.

babydriver27 09-19-2005 05:06 PM

Erica walked into the classroom with her bag slung over her shoulder, waving to those she knew and taking a seat as the song of the Phoenix affected her. It was nice and relaxing slumping into her seat, letting her cares fly away. She needed the light reprieve after what she'd been through so far this term.

Laurasia_Malfoy 09-19-2005 05:38 PM

Laurasia entered the classroom & smiled at the professor. "Good day, Professor Dainsie." She looked around the room for a moment admiring all of the various creatures & their multitude of sounds. Noticing the Phoenix upon the desk, she smiled softly & cooed to the bird.

Feeling relaxed, she walked to her seat & sat her bag down. Reaching into her bag she pulled out a small bundle & unwrapped it. It was a tiny lilac-colored pygmy puff. She began to stroke its' soft fur & speak quietly to it. "How are you DeeDee? Do you hear the pretty Phoenix's song? It's just lovely isn't it?"

R348753 09-19-2005 06:08 PM

luna walked into the classroom confidently and took a seat near the front of the class
"hello proffessor" she said brisky and sat with her arms folded grinning cheekily

XxNoelxX 09-19-2005 06:59 PM

Noel walked into the classroom with a sigh of relief, the phoenix's song had to be her favorite in the world. She sat down and pulled out a quill and prepared to take notes.

LilyBlack 09-19-2005 07:20 PM

Lily walked into class.Stummblin a bit the Pheonix's song soothes her muddle mind.Pullin her cloak tighter around her she sat down in the back of the class away from the other students as to not to give them what she had.

Rumor Black Remus 09-19-2005 07:26 PM

Rem walked into the class room at found a seat in the back where she waited for class to begin.

Si 09-19-2005 07:34 PM

Astoria walked into class with a blank expression on her face. She quite liked this class judging by the first lesson. They didn't really have this class last term and Beaubaxtons' Care Of Magical Creatures lessons were always very boring. She took a seat and listened to the Phoenix song which helped her relax a bit. She sighed and waited for class to begin while looking around the class for familiar faces.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 07:45 PM

Bag swinging over her shoulder, Nadia walked in the next CoMC class. Because it was this professor and this class, she thought it wouldn't matter to bring the pygmy puff she aquired with her. It was on the top of her hat (the orange-yellow one, yes), at the other side of the bunch feathers sticked to it. It was pretty light too so it didn't bother her to have it up there.

Nadia choose a seat the nearest to the front as possible despite the cluttered classroom, and then started taking her supplies. While she was at it, however, the pygmy puff who had been asleep (or seemly asleep) the whole time, had not only awokened, but it was hungry. It had stuck its tongue like a thin pinkigsh snake and, to Nadia's little notice, started wandering around the classroom.

The pinkish tongue slithered all its way up Astoria's... ear. Yup. Ear. Either this creature liked sour, or had a wrong sense of direction, or was too lazy to stick its tongue on the right, well, possibly it was a good thing. After tickling Astoria's ear, it went towards Drusilla's, episode that was a bit longer, and then to Jaren's left ear. Nadia, oblivious to it all.

Zekk 09-19-2005 07:56 PM

Zekk walks into the class, he sits calmly and waits for class to start..

Si 09-19-2005 07:59 PM

Astoria had taken her book out to read to pass the time. All of a sudden, she felt something slither up her...ear. It felt very strange, so she turned her head and giggled when she saw Nadia's pygmy puff slythering up people's ears. The funny thing was that Nadia had no clue what that pygmy puff was doing while she was taking out her supplies. Astoria decided not to say anything to Nadia because she wanted to see how many people the pygmy puff would lick before she noticed.

secretlover101 09-19-2005 08:51 PM

Emily walked in and found a seat in the midle of the classroom. She was waiting for class to start.

Aphrodite 09-19-2005 08:58 PM

Aph walked in and saw people playing with their pygmy puff's everywhere. She watched them for a moment, oncea gain cursing her grandmother's stupid rules before she even started looking for a seat. She saw Laurasia, and walked over.

"May I sit here?" She asked, indicating the seat next to the girl.

Backslash 09-19-2005 09:22 PM

Jaren noticed Puffles attached to his ear only when he felt it...slobbering, also when Edgar made an outraged kauk kind of noise and poked it with its beak lightly, as if to determine if it was in fact alive and not some random mouldy orange. With a sound like a plug being pulled from a drain he removed the Puffskein from his ear and held it in his hand as it made some kind of humming noise.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 09:45 PM

ooc: Not the whole creature, only the tongue :shifty: It's VERY long you know. But...

It seems at some point the pygmy puff became a bit more active than usual. Let's start by revealing to the public how that hairball became attatched to the side of Jaren's head. First off, this hairball was stubborn. Even if the other fought to take the creature off their ears, it still attempted to get its tiny tounge inside the ear. So.

After repeated attempts of trying with Jaren, and failing, because Edgar seemed to want to eat the tongue as if it was a worm, the pygmy puff changed its strategy. The tongue went looking for the desk of the boy instead, tying itself on it like a rope, the pygmy puff dragged itself to be area, off Nadia's hat without her noticing, and then under the desk. then the tongue attatched itself to the robes of the boy, and climbing him up like a mountain, reached his shoulder. And then the job was done.

Only this time the creature didn't just plugged its tongue on the ear hole in look for something, but actually attatched itself to the ear. Back to the present.

Looking as if the pygmy puff had gone back to sleep, it stayed on Jaren's hand as he examined it, kind of purring contently. That lasted for about a second. Next the tongue was out again and going directly towards Jaren's face --

Backslash 09-19-2005 09:53 PM

Thinking quickly, Jaren pulled out a small raisin from his pocket (it was actually meant for Alucard, but the bat liked fresh fruit anyways) and stuck it onto the end of the long pink...appendage, while shrugging slightly to stop Edgar from reaching over and eating Puffles' tongue.

Arkee Maldemer 09-19-2005 09:55 PM

Slouching in her chair, Arkee twirled her curly hair with her wand, where it all eventually tangled and stuck. Unable to remove the wand (despite her most valiant efforts), she gave up and complacently let it hang.

She rested her chin on her palm as she observed the Slytherin Prefect, who was sitting in front of her, plucking a pygmy puff from his ear.

"You know," she began with a yawn, "It says a lot about a person who is well-liked to animals. I don't know what 'it' is, or what 'it' says a lot about, but I'm sure it's all very interesting."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 10:03 PM

Puffles pulled its tongue in again much like a frog, pleased by the small treat and showing it by purring a bit more out of appreciation. The tongue was out again, looming like a teasing menace. It dived again but this time rounding Jaren's face though other shoulder (not where Edgar was perched) and attacked Arkee's face instead. Well, from her angle, it wasn't much her face... more like her open eyeball...

Arkee Maldemer 09-19-2005 10:08 PM

Arkee yelped in horror, jumping up and down and trying to pry the creature off of her face.

"DEAR MERLIN IT'S LICKING MY EYEBALL!" she wailed, "AND IT BURNS! GET IT OFF GET IT OFF GET IT OFF!"

Backslash 09-19-2005 10:14 PM

Jaren sighed. It was just a tongue, not the entire fuzzy creature...batting an eager Edgar away the Slytherin boy pinched Puffles' tongue lightly and pulled it off and away from Arkee with a kind of a sticky "snap" noise like chewing gum being pulled off of something.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 10:15 PM

Inhibited not to said scared of the girl screaming about its eyeball, Puffles retrived its tongue immediately, though Jaren's fingers, and jumped off Jaren's hands into his desk, and then onto the rubes of the student before Jaren, aiding itself with the tongue to climb again. But because it didn't find a place to actually grip on, the togue rounded itself like a rope around the student(Erica)'s ear.

Meanwhile, Nadia finally turned around to the source of the commotion. There was Arkee, talking about a burning eyeball, one of her eyes shut which was... a rather musing sign while she tried to actually sound dramatical. she looke around, however, and couldn't understand what she was talking about, who was licking her or what.

Arkee Maldemer 09-19-2005 10:19 PM

Arkee recoiled as the sticky tongue was forcibly removed from her eye. She rubbed her eye and wonderingly regarded her saviour.

"You, sir," she said to Jaren with solemnity, taking his hand into hers, "Are truly a knight in shining armour. I believe I owe you what is known as a wizard's life debt?"

As per usual, Arkee had blown this little incident way out of proportion.

Ozzy 09-19-2005 10:21 PM

Ozzy took a seat near the front of the class and placed his quill, black ink bottle and a piece of parchment on top of his desk afterward he steepled his fingers and and waited for the lesson to begin.

Backslash 09-19-2005 10:26 PM

"Save yourself the trouble," Jaren muttered, rearranging a few of his things that Puffles had knocked about on his desk.

ooc: Okay I think we need to calm down and wait quietly for class to begin.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 10:31 PM

Nadia frowned at the scene, maybe even glared. It seemed like an excuse to call him that, if you asked her. Her attention was dragged away by a pink stuff on the corner of her eyes that... would get anybody attention when it was climbing up a person's ear.

Eyes wide in surprise and something else, Nadia jumped up from her desk, hitting with her hips said desk with all its content - her eyes retuned to the ink bottle, catching it and a couple other things before it fell on the floor.

"I'm sorry, it's mine - sorry, professor," she appologized all the way to where Erica had been with the pygmy puff tied to its ear with its tongue. It took a little more work to pray the creature off the ear. "I don't know how it reached it up here, ah, sorry." She continued forcing it until grabbing Puffles and taking it with her back to the desk, blushing.

(Let us remember she didn't even realize what Puffles had been doing only minutes before, either.)

Dainsie 09-19-2005 10:39 PM

Professor Dainsie walks forward to Nadia's desk and places some food on, the puff stopping its roaming and tucking into it.

"Hello everyone! I hope you are all well. Today we shall be talking about the reality of mythical creatures; the existence of beings that are thought to be purely 'fairy-tales'.

For centuries, Muggles have created fantastical stories about animals they claim to have seen. Most of these muggles were thought crazy and were shunned by the Muggle community, and yet the stories still lived on. What they didn't realise, was that the stories, or parts there of, were actually true.

They were usually created by an unsuspecting muggle stumbling upon a stray creature, or the drunken tale of a misguided witch or wizard at the local pub. I can remember reading about Gladys Bogdan, a Scottish witch, who told all the local muggles about her encounter with a dragon, then promptly lead them to it when they refused to believe her. The obliviators had a hard time that day, and she was fined by the Ministry for wilfully exposing the muggles to the magical world, and for leading them to a dangerous creature.

Does anyone know of any similar stories that have happened involving a mythical beast?

[OOC: Make it up and be very specific and creative. The best ones will receive points.]

Backslash 09-19-2005 10:42 PM

Jaren raised his hand. "There was one incident in the winter of 2030 which involved a man who claimed to have seen a group of four-footed bird-Martians dancing in his field...he even took tour groups of regulars from the local bar to his field at night whenever he felt that it was 'the night' for the Martians to land. It turned out that his tour guided group was either too drunk to provide reliable witness or he mis-estimated the date. It turned out to be a few Hyppogriffs grazing."

XxNoelxX 09-19-2005 10:48 PM

Noel watched the pygmy puff incidents and stiffled a laugh, then she raised her hand, "I happen to know of a classic muggle novel written about the phoenix. It's called The Phoenix and the Carpet and is written by E. Nesbit."

Dainsie 09-19-2005 10:53 PM

She nodded. "Yes Jaren, but be more specific, like names and dates etc."

Turning to Noel she said, "Yes, that's a good one, but a mooncalf isn't really a mythical creature... Come on everyone! What about stories about dragons and unicorns, or griffins and phoenix, or even centaurs! There have been many sightings by muggles, so you should have heard atleast 1 story."

Ozzy 09-19-2005 10:55 PM

Ozzy looked up at the Professor. He took his quill and loaded it up with ink. He scribbled down some notes then pondered about whether he had ever heard of a tale involving a mythical beast. When nothing came to mind he simply decided to listen rather than present one.

SweetCatastrophe 09-19-2005 11:00 PM

"I heard of a unicorn that ran wild in a muggle town, trampling cabbage and such. The ministry had a large amount of memory to modify. And the cabbages had to be replaced, as well. I think it was sometime in the 1400's."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 11:01 PM

Nadia thought for a moment, wanting to redeen herself of what happened while Puffles tucked in. She raised her hand, "There was this incident of the Department of Magical Creatures that was quite famous, a couple of years ago.

"They were trying out new people for staff at a muggle yard, real-life experience kind of thing. Because the man in charge of an evaluation of a newcomer started flirting with her, instead of watching gnomes at the place, they never realized there was a growing group of muggles watching what was described as 'little men running from an overgrown up chicken', a Hippogriff.

"The catch-phrase the wizard used, "Does 'care of magical creatures' includes magical humans?" became famous after that incident."

She pondered for a bit, "But to be quite honest I don't remember the name of the man. Mr Hopper? I think it was."

Mistress Vondella 09-19-2005 11:02 PM

Linnea raised her hand. "My uncle told me the story of the time he met a red dragon and was able to communicate with it. He promised to save her egg, and she promised not to eat him. My grandfather also encountered a dragon, though his wasn't so friendly. It had been torturing a villiage, they had to go off and pretend to slay the animal while the local ministry, knowing it was too big of an area, started to just spin about other decent sized 'normal' creatures that they just mistook for a dragon."

quidditch_chick 09-19-2005 11:07 PM

Kali remembered a story she heard once. She raised her hand and answered, "When I was visiting my aunt one summer a couple years ago, she told us a story about a muggle who swore they saw a baby unicorn. It was a friend of a friend of my uncle's, Kenneth Hark I think his name was, and he said that while he was drving he saw one peering out of a nearby forest. The man ran and told everybody that would listen how he saw the unicorn. Predictably, his muggle aquaintances didn't believe him, he was after all a drunk. Later the police heard about him and hauled him away, to one of the psych wards at the local hospital."

XxNoelxX 09-19-2005 11:25 PM

Noel wrote down some of the answers.

ooc: Dainsie read my edit. :D

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-19-2005 11:38 PM

Her hand still raised up, she went on, "Well, there was also this winged horse... It got temporarily blind after a spell accident at the farm it was being raised, at St. Ottery Catchpole, and it soared though the city sky one evening, wearing a couple of things it didn't realized to be carrying along, including as pair of old woman knickers." Well, she shoudn't tell... "Its journey ended when it crashed into a building face first and landed on a building roof. They never quite erased all of the muggles' memories."

"Likewise, there's this muggle story... maybe a legend... about an unicorn transfigured into an human not to be caught by treasure hunters. Judging by the records, no name was registered, this woman's. It occurred on the island of Drear, though, contemporary times.

"Oppossitely, I heard of this farse about a woman turning as phoenix into a violin. He became a famous person, this... Dora Folk-- no, Follicle. Made it look the music came from her and made touching music from her abilities but, well, it turned to be a cheat. This was recent and she last performed on a presentation at the Louvre where the magic failed and the phoenix escaped.

"And... " Could she tell about her own experience with Sparky? No. Probably not a good idea, besides it wasn't that interesting. She shook her head, "no, nothing."

ilovedaniel 09-19-2005 11:39 PM

Lacie walked in the classroom, and found a seat in front row. She grabbed her notebook with her quill and ink bottle. She thought to herself, "I am so ready." She heard what Linnea said, "That is better than my story; My Middle Ages grandfather which who was a muggle, He fought off a dragon but almost died to save my grandmother. If he died I wouldn't be here today. He fought the dragon by 10 inch silver sword by I seem to forget the type of dragon. He struck it a couple of thousand times till it fell to it's grave. Now that is how to slay the dragon. Even muggles maybe at that time could fight off a dragon on his own." She smiled after her grandfather's story.

Dainsie 09-20-2005 12:19 AM

5 points to Nadia, cooki and Kali.

Ok, we're going to talk about Dragon's first. They are probably the most famous of all mythical creatures, but are also highly useful by magical terms. Can anyone name 2 parts of a dragon that have highly magical properties?

Backslash 09-20-2005 12:23 AM

"Dragon blood has twelve uses," Jaren offered after raising his hand.

SweetCatastrophe 09-20-2005 12:25 AM

"The heartstring is commonly used in wands," Anila supplied, smiling slightly. Her own wand core was that of a dragon heartstring.

william.cook1990 09-20-2005 12:36 AM

"Dragon claws are believed to have magical powers in helping people to remember things," Xavier puts in, raising his hand. "Also I believe that dragons have something in their throats that help create fire. That could definitely be used for magical uses."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-20-2005 12:46 AM

Nadia raised her hand, "The scales and skin, used as protection accessories like in, say, gloves."

Dainsie 09-20-2005 12:51 AM

There's 2 more... anyone?

Backslash 09-20-2005 12:53 AM

"Dragon liver, heart and horn," Jaren supplied. He had heard someone mention dragon claws, but those weren't exactly classified as its horns.

Dainsie 09-20-2005 01:05 AM

Excellent. There is one thing though that is classed as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods. What is that?

SweetCatastrophe 09-20-2005 01:05 AM

"A dragon egg?" Anila said timidly.

Dainsie 09-20-2005 01:15 AM

That's right, 2 points!

Did you know: Female dragons are bigger than males...

Next we will talk about the different species.

Martha 09-20-2005 01:19 AM

Martha takes careful notes. Dragons had always been her favorite magical creature--and unicorns as well.

gumdrop480 09-20-2005 01:55 AM

Kalaya looked down at her notes-and doodles-and hoped she hadn't missed anything important while she was doodling. Well I was listening carfully while I was doodling so I doubt I did. Thank goodness I learned that skill in Muggle School! Kalaya thought to herself. She then looked up at the teacher, waiting for another question or more information or..something.

HPhobbit 09-20-2005 02:42 AM

Pacilla carefully took notes on the dragons and smiled as she wrote. She didn't exactly like dragons and she defineately wouldn't just love to meet one, but nonetheless, she found them very interesting. She kept her ears open as she took in every word that was spoken, fiddling with her quill a little when she wasn't taking notes.

DanielHott_HesMine 09-20-2005 02:43 AM

Jessica scribbled down notes on some parchment as the teacher sounded off facts that Jessica deemed as important. She looked around when the teacher mentioned species. She raised her hand. "The Hungarian Horntail and the Welsh Green are two of my personal favorites. I know that there are others like the Chinese Fireball, and the Norweigan Ridgeback as well." She said, contributing her two cents.

Dainsie 09-20-2005 04:18 AM

Right, so how many known dragon species are there?

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-20-2005 04:23 AM

Nadia raised her hand, "There's ten main registered species, and many more if we consider the hibrids."

Backslash 09-20-2005 04:24 AM

Jaren wrote down notes at a leasurely pace, having read up on dragons many many times during his studies at Hogwarts.

Meandering 09-20-2005 04:32 AM

Peony scribbled down her notes messily, and then drew a picture of the long (Chinese: dragon),far more carefully. She loved dragons. Once, when young, and watching a school play about St. George killing a dragon, Peony had caused something of a scene by screaming at the top of her five-year-old lungs for the RPSCA.

Very good! 2 points.

Okay, first one, the most dangerous of all the dragons is the H_____ H______.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-20-2005 04:42 AM

Nadia raised her hand again, "Hungarian Horntail." Maybe a bit too enthusiastically.

Dainsie 09-20-2005 04:51 AM

That's correct, another 2 points. Now, the Horntail is very lizard-like in appearance and has large spikes on its tail, bronze horns, and yellow eyes. They are known for actively hunting humans as well. Can anyone tell me anything else about them?

Mrs. Weasley 09-20-2005 05:07 AM

It has one of the longest fire breathing ranges at up to fifty feet. Its eggs are cement colored and partially hard shelled. Their young club their way out with their tail whose spikes are usually well developed at birth. The Hungarian Horntail feeds on goats, sheep, and whenever possible humans.

vape07 09-20-2005 06:01 AM

vape wrote all the things that she heard about the hungarian horntail, it's the most fascinating thing she heard of..and keep on listening afterwards..

R348753 09-20-2005 04:11 PM

luna raised her hand
"also is it that they are very protective of their young and their eggs?" she said

harry_luvr 09-20-2005 04:14 PM

Adz rose her hand, but before the teacher picked her, her ideas had been said. She rowned at the hufflepuff who had said her ideas, but quickly went back to her normal, cheeky self.

allucha 09-20-2005 04:15 PM

ali raised his hand, clearing his throat,
*hem hem*
'supposedly the most dangerous dragron of all the breeds the hungarian horntail has black scales and is lizardlike in appearance. it has yellow eyes, bronze horns and similarly coloured spikes that protrude from its long tail, the horntail has one of the longest fire-breathing ranges (upto fifty feet)). its eggs are cement coloured and particularly hard-shelled; the young club their way out using their tails, whose spikes are well developed at birth. the hungarian horntail feeds on goats, sheep and, whenever possible, humans'

Drusilla Black 09-20-2005 04:48 PM

Drusilla was still recovering from the attack of the pygmy puff, her ear still tickling. She must have hit the puff the right way, as it left her alone almost immediately. She wondered whose puff it might be, but suspected it to be one of Nadia´s, as it was attacking Jaren a bit too enthusiastically. She felt no other pygmy puff would have the nerve to tickle their Prefect that way. Wait a minute, are those creatures even animals, she thought. And I´m thinking like it would be intelligent enough to know what it is doing ...

When it attacked the Hufflepuff girls eye, she felt like throwing up. Good luck, they hadn´t got any green ones after all, she thought.

babydriver27 09-20-2005 05:55 PM

As Erica took notes she beckoned toward Nadia a look of forgiveness. She didn't mind the pygmy puff on her at all. Sure it felt a little strange to have something dangling from her ear like that, but then again, this term was shaping up to be something totally different from what she had expected at all. It was most definitely one to write home about, minus the detention, of course. Besides, Puffles was adorable and Erica was a plain, old sucker for adorable pets.

Turning her attention back to the professor and the lesson, she continued to take notes and scan her text for extra information, waiting for the right opportunity to earn her house some points.

XxNoelxX 09-20-2005 06:45 PM

Noel wrote down a few notes and all the dragon breeds she could remember reading about.

Padfoot 09-20-2005 09:07 PM

Heshasa began to scribble down notes as quick as possible, hoping it wouldn't go any faster.

ladybird 09-20-2005 09:19 PM

"Oh!" Out of excitement, Birdy jumped to her feet with her hand swinging wildly in the air above her. It took her a moment to notice she was out of her seat, but it didn't seem to phase her.

"Well, they're native to Hungary, you know like the name," she gave an unexplained giggle, then continued, "They're regarded as one of the most dangerous species of dragon. They have a black, scaly hide accompanied by the gold spikes running along its back and down its tail. They can shoot flames up to fifty feet, too, people say," Birdy's eyes widened crazily at the thought, "And they're eggs have really hard shells and they're grey. You know, like...cement! Yeah, just like cemement. And they're carnivorous like other dragons. Their diet consists of mainly goats, sheep, and sometimes, humans."

Ozzy 09-20-2005 10:15 PM

Ozzy joted down some more notes as he listened closely.

Excellent, 5 points!

Very good, 2 points!

Ok next, what is the smallest species of dragon?

ladybird 09-20-2005 10:24 PM

Birdy concentreated for a moment.

"The Peruvian Vipertooth? It's only 15 feet long."

Dainsie 09-20-2005 10:44 PM

That's right, 2 points. They are also the swiftest in flight. Probably their most deadly feature though is that they have very venomous fangs. They also like to hunt humans, so much so that at one stage their numbers had to be culled.

Does anyone else know anything interesting about them?

allucha 09-20-2005 10:50 PM

the dragon has smooth copper coloured scales with black ridge markings the horns are shortand the fangs are particularly poisonous.the vipertooth will regularly feed on goats and cows, but has a liking for humans that the confederation of wizards had to exterminate a number of the dragons in the late 19th century.

Laurasia_Malfoy 09-20-2005 10:57 PM

Laurasia raised her hand. "They are smooth scaled, copper-colored & have black ridge markings."

XxNoelxX 09-20-2005 10:57 PM

Noel raised her hand, "If it hasn't already been said, Peruvian Vipertooths also prey on each other and sometimes spiders as well."

Fantastic, 3 points.

Next, probably the most striking of all the dragons, is the chinese fireball. They tend to be much more tolerant of eachother than all the other dragon species, allowing 2 or 3 others to share their territory. Their eggs are also highly valued in chinese wizardry. What makes their appearence so striking?

babydriver27 09-20-2005 11:42 PM

Erica raised her hand.

"It's scarlet and smooth scaled and has a fringe of golden spikes around it's snub-snouted face and extremely protuberant eyes according to the text, Professor."

Dainsie 09-20-2005 11:48 PM

That's correct 2 points. Anything else special about them?

babydriver27 09-20-2005 11:52 PM

Erica raised her hand again.

"The Chinese Fireball also gained it's name from the mushroom-shaped flame that bursts from its nostrils when it is angered. It weighs between two and four tonnes, the females being larger than the males and the Fireball will feast on most mammals, though it prefers pigs and humans."

gumdrop480 09-21-2005 12:47 AM

"They are sometimes known as Liondragon. Their eggs are a vivid crimson speckled with gold in appearance." Kalaya said uncertainly. She continued writing notes about what the other hufflepuff had said.

UnicornDragonPatronus 09-21-2005 01:19 AM

Athena ran in and grabbed a seat, glad that she had not missed the Whole lesson. She waited patiently to hear what the topic was about while getting out pens and parchment for notes.
Discovering the topic, Athena raised her hand and said, "The Chinese Firebellis especially striking by it's scarlet, smooth-scaled skin, and the fringe of golden spikes around its face. It also has bulging eyes." Athena smiled at the last part.

ladybird 09-21-2005 01:23 AM

"Well, they're also called the liondragon, because it's all orange like and pretty. It's eggs are really vivid red with gold flecks on them. And the fire it blows usually takes a mushroom cloud form. I also believe they're found in the mountains if you were looking for a specific region in China."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 09-21-2005 01:28 AM

Ntto to repeat the information, Nadia raised her hand, "The Fireball of Liondragon, as the name says, is native to the mountains of China. The outer layer of the eggs, which are bright crisom speckled with golden yellow, are used in Chinese magic - its shell, that is."

gumdrop480 09-21-2005 01:34 AM

Kalaya looked up, smiling. She had forgotten that they lived in the mountains. She added that to her notes before she continued doodling along the edge of her paper while waiting for the next question. Maybe I should make a doodle page she thought to herself. She had learned in Muggle School that some teachers disliked doodles on papers. Then again, these are just notes. She thought as she twisted a piece of her blonde hair around her fingers, trying to think of what to draw.

angelmonkey 09-21-2005 02:46 AM

olivia was amazed at all the things she was learning about dragons! furiously she was writing notes so as to not forget anything.

DanielHott_HesMine 09-21-2005 03:32 AM

Jessica wrote note after note. She was facinated by dragons, and was so intent on listening, she didn't realize that she made a few spelling errors in her notes. She set down her quill and shook out her hand, it was begining to become sore from gripping the quill.

Dainsie 09-21-2005 06:07 AM

Wonderful! 5 points to both Erica and ladybird.

Next is the Antipodean Opaleye, the only dragon to live near and in my counrty of birth. What country are they native to?

Zekk 09-21-2005 06:11 AM

Zekk thinks for a moment and then answers. "They are from New Zealand and also fomr Australia." He says hoping he is correct.

Dainsie 09-21-2005 06:34 AM

That's right, 2 points. They are originally from New Zealand, but have migrated to Australia (my home country) when territory became scarce. It is unusual because it tends to dwell in valleys rather than mountains. But this also helps to hide them. It has also been said to be the most beautiful dragon, why is that?

Taking Back Kirstie 09-21-2005 07:17 AM

Jacques raised his hand.

"Professor, Antipodean Opaleyes are considered beautiful because of their iridescent, shiny, pearl like scales and the fact that their eyes are glittery, multicoloured and have no pupils"

He lowered his hand and hoped he had the correct answer.
