Lesson 1: Elements in Herbology The room is wide. To the left of the room you can find peculiar types of plants. To the right of the room you can find supplies. The wide and long tables face the teacher's desk. Professor Virohsa walks briskly towards the classroom. She unlocks the door, makes sure it stays open for the time being, and goes over to the main desk. Sitting down, she patiently waits for the students to show up. After all, they have to cover a lot of material. Of course, it is not time to start class yet. So if you arrive early, you may talk to the Professor or wait for class to start at the adequate time. ooc- Check Announcements for the PRECISE time class will start. Anything before then its just before class starts. |
Erica entered the Herbology classroom quietly and took a seat in the middle of the room. She still felt frosty towards Virohsa after their encounters last term, but knew that she really did know her Herbology, unlike certain other professors from last term. She nodded at the professor in silent greeting and took out her materials, waiting patiently for the class to begin. |
Selena walked in with her school tie on her forehead backwards. "I have no idea why i'm in weird plants class" Selena thought. Selena saw her VP of the DFC and decided to sit with her. "Sup E, whass poppin?" |
Erica turned her attention from her Herbology text that she was reading to her friend with the tie on her head and burst out in a fit of giggles. Sometimes, or more like everytime, Selena could turn out to be quite a fun handful. Still giggling, she pointed to the attire of her Slytherin buddy, the founder of the Detention Club. "Hey, Selena. Forgot your hat today?" |
Lauren walked into the room with a slight frown on her face. She was excited about being in class, But her cold was getting to her. She quickly took a seat, and took our her supplies. She gave a slight smile to the professor, and the students around her. |
Zelda walked into the classroom, feeling quite nervous about her first time in herbology. She greeted professor "Hello professor" and found herself an empty seat, waiting for professor's instructions. |
Lee approached the rather large green house in a steady manner. Professor Virohsa confused him completely wether she was nice or bad, but ironically Lee trusted her very much. He opend the greenhouse door which creaked as he did so and said "Hi" to the participants of it. It was mandatory Lee took a seat in the back of this class, he was less tempted to cause havoc that way since plants bored the living days out of him. He took out his books and sprawled them across the desk then placed his wand into his pocket and removed his gloves from another and placed them on the desk also, just in case. |
Rosa walked into the greenhouse looking forward to herbology and sat down in the back. she was glad virosha was still teaching, even though she'd been with the ministry last year. unlike most of the other professors from last year, she had known how to teach. rosa looked around the classroom with interest, wondering what they were going to do today. |
"Hullo," said Peony to the boy who had just come in. She slumped back down onto the table, waiting for the lesson to begin. Her black hair fell into her eyes and Peony took the opportunity of closing her eyes for a little bit. She just prayed the Tentaculas werent hungry today. They had tendency to bite suddenly. |
"Nah i ain't fo'get it, just ain't see the need foe it. Besides this is much betta...hol' up" Selena casted a charm on the end of the tie causin it to stand str8 up inna air. "Aii now i got dat chief indian vibe goin on" Selena turned to Erica puttin her hand out in front of her "HOW" Selena then whispered to Erica "yo dat means hi...i saw it on some muggle disney movie named Peter Pan o' sumptin like dat." |
Yuna walked into the classroom and had taken a seat at the far end she got a book out about herbology and started to read it quietly. |
Ginn walked into the Herbology classroom and looked around. Noticing the professor she greeted her saying "Hello Professor Virosha." She was very happy to be here. She loved working with plants and hoped this would be a class she would excel at. After spotting a familiar face she walked over to where Zelda was sitting and said "Hey Zelda. Havent seen you in a few days. Mind if I sit with you?" She sat down and began getting her things in order and waited for class to begin. |
Adz walked in, elegantly sat down and flicked her hair out of her eyes. Thn she brought out her herbology stuff, and leant back in her chair, a cheeky grin on her face. |
Cherry entered the classroom and she immediately spotted several plants which she thought they'd probably be talking about in today's lesson. Herbology had never been her favourite subject but Virohsa, though strict was a very good teacher. Her eyes sweeped the room as she took in all the students who had already assembled for class to begin. She waved to Ginnymel and Rosa whom she knew and made her way towards Erica, and asked her, "Hey, mind if I sit with you?" |
Emily walked into the room and found a seat waiting for class to start. |
She walked in the Herbology Classroom and gave Virohsa a very ... odd look. Mind you, it was more of a glare. There was something that she did not like about her. Maybe Alex could not put her finger on it at this moment, but she suspected it had something to do with her attitude. What was even more annoying was the fact the Virohsa was her Head of House this year. And even though she wanted, oh so badly, to do something very unpleasant to her, she knew she could not afford it. Not at times like these. Walking between the many rows of seats and desk, she took her usual seat at the very back of the classroom. There was no way she could get distracted by anyone or anything there. She was there to learn, after all. She placed her bag underneath her desk, but not before she took out a few pieces of parchment and a quill. Her wand, of course, was clutched in her hand. Truth was, she did not go anywhere without it these days. Alex placed her parchment and quill on her desk, and stared at Virohsa with a glare on her face, waiting for class to begin. |
Kristal entered the classroom, scanning it contents. She was a little early, but was happy to see Adz sitting off to a side. "Hey," Kristal shouted over. "Can I sit here?" |
Heshasa walked in, noticing she was a bit early, she sat down a bit away from everyone she had not made many friends giving she was a bit shy. Taking out her book she sat quietly waiting for class to begin. |

Meghan walked with her bookbag over her shoulder and sat down in the seat beside Rosa. "How you doing? Can't wait for the class to begin." She looked around and wondered what they will be doing. Dangerous plants would be fun because she didn't really have all experience with them and she needed practice. Grinning Meghan faced the front waiting for class to begin. |
Sarah walked in and took the last seat next to Adz and said "Hi Adz how's it going." |
Kay walked into the classroom and found a vacant seat near the front. She took out a quill, bottle of ink, and one sheet of parchment. While awaiting the start of the lecture, she prepared the parchment for notes. |
"I'm ok" Adz grinned and said "So, what do you think we're learning today?" |
"I have no idea. I just hope it's good." |
Jaren entered the classroom, eyeing the various plants in it as if trying to remember which one exactly liked to bite passers-by. It was actually a bit of a mystery how he managed to pass his OWL for Herbology, and he would require much more than a miracle to pass his NEWT for this. |
Adz couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah - herbology's not exactly my strongest subject, so maybe something easy would be best to start with" Adz whispered, loud enough for only Sarah to hear. |
Nadia walked inside the classroom, looking around for an empty desk, though it was all a bit cluttered over there. As she passed by the desk of the professor, she greeted her ("Good Morning") and resumed trying to spot a desk, finally finding one near the window. She sat down, started to get her supplies out and listened attentively waiting for the class to start. |
"I hope it is some thing easy." Sarah wispered back |
Professor Virohsa notes all the studens talking and mingling. When time to start class comes around, she stands up. "Ok, class! Time to start class", she said in a very loud voice. Once class had settled, her eyes scan the audience. "Welcome to your first Lesson of Herbology this year. I hope everyone brought their materials", she said slowly. "Today, we will be talking about Safety, a Recap of last year, and one of the theories behind herbology", she said coldly. "First. Safety. Can anyone tell me why we would need to know about Safety in Herbology Class?", she asked the students. |
"We need to wear gloves, and be cautious. Anything could be something else - so we need to be prepared for anything..." Adz answered carefully |
Sarah raised her Hand and said " You need to worry about safety because if you don't you could get really hurt or get poisoned from one of the plants you are working with." |
ooc: Again? Jaren raised his hand. "Wear protective gloves when handling plants, and make sure you know exactly what you're handling." |
Nadia raised her hand, "For one, herbology usually deals with plants that can be poisonous and would be used as component of analgesics in medicine or other. Plus, magical plants have their own defensive mechanism that we should be aware of before approaching the plant, say, know the whomping willow reluctance for company and its way to attack you, so you won't get near its branches, etc." |
Meghan raised her hand even though the answer tshe thought of was silly. "You also need to follow the teacher's instructions carefully." |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "That's true. Things are never what they appear. However, you forgot to raise your hand before answering. So no points this time", she stated coldly. "And in case some of you didn't read the classroom rules.. you have to be respectful as well as raise your hand before answering", she added. "Anyone else has any ideas why we are talking about Safety?" |
Kay raised her hand. "You should make sure that your earmuffs are on securely before handling certain plants, such as Mandrakes." |

Professor Virohsa nodded again. "Yes, it is essential you know what you are going to be working with. 1 pt for Slytherin". Quote:

--- "Ok, moving on. Most of the plants we will be working with will either have poison or will be used to remove poison or any other maladies", she looked at her class. "Write it down", she said slowly. "Now..", she moved her eyes to Kay and Meghan. "We will talk about Safety Precautions. What should be implemented to keep all students safe?", she asked the children in her class. |
Sarah raised her hand agian and said "one safety precaution is to always wear gloves when you are working with a plant becasue you don't want to get poked with any thing that has posion in it." |
Nadia raised her hand again, "When extracting pus or other liquid component, wear goggles. When dealing with poisonous plants, gloves. When dealing with plants that should not be touched even with gloves, for various reasons, you use the wands. Of course, if dealing with all of them at the time, use all of those items. "When dealing with agressive plants that can move on their own, one should have the due space. Also, we should know the weakness of the plant in case it goes out of hand, like with the Devil's Snare. To keep people safe the plant should be dealt with in a secure enviroment equiped with the tools necessary to deal with said problem." |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "1 pf for Hufflepuff", she stated as she continued to wait for students to give more answers. She listened to Nadia and nodded. "Yes, goggles are a definite. 1 more pt for Slytherin", she added. |
Meghan raised her hand again. "Well now you would need to pay attention and follow the teacher's rules exactly." |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very good, dear. You need to listen to the instructions very carefully. 1 pt for Ravenclaw". |
Kay raised her hand again. "It is important that one has their protective gear securely on before handling any plant, such as securing one's earmuffs before handling Mandrakes." She hesitated for a moment as she remembered another safety detail. "Also, it is important to keep your work area and the floor clear of any unnecessary items." |
Sarah raised her hand again and said "when dealing with mandrakes you have to make sure that you have your earmuffs on tight because the cry of the mandrake is fatal for anyone who heres it." |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very well, Kay. 2 pts for Ravenclaw..", she replied. She nodded at the Hufflepuff, "! pt for Hufflepuff". Being how it was taking a while, Professor Virohsa waved her wand and the Blackboard showed the following phrases: Quote:
|
Kay bent over her parchment and copied down the list of safety precautions that Professor Virohsa wrote on the blackboard. |
"Moving on. Last year we saw a variety of poisoneous plants and how they never appeared to be what they seemed. This year, we will be focusing on the Elements. The Elements we will be focusing on are Water, Fire, Air, and Earth", she looked at the students. Most of which were not taking notes. "From which philosophical background do we base the idea that matter is divided into these four elements?", she asked the class. |
ooc: Keep our child away? *watches Nadia-Ic's tummy and tries to feel somebody kicking down there* Nadia took some notes on the safety precautions, wondering if they were indeed going to use ladders or it was just the common procedure. Well, if they were dealing with trees maybe... Listening further the given instructions, Nadia raised her hand again, "Ancient Greek Philosophers, Presocratics. Actually, those philosophers held their own name and it was 'Physics', if I recall correctly." |
Sarah had not heard the question because she was taking notes. |
Kay raised her hand. "The Greeks, Professor Virohsa." |
Professor Virohsa frowned. "Greek Philosophy!", she said loudly. "2 pts for Slytherin"... "The four elements -- earth, water, air, and fire -- dominated natural philosophy for two thousand years". "Which Greek philosopher developed this theory?" ooc- had to change it because Nadia was right and I missed her post. |
Peony raised her hand to answer the professor's question. "The Chinese Fengshui-?" she pronounced the Chinese words as they were supposed to be said: Wind, water. "It's the yin and yang theory. Along with that, the Chinese zodiac have the twelve animals divided into those four categories, and metal as well. The sacred animals of China, each belonging to one specific direction are also said to control their particular element. The Genbu - tortoise is earth. The Phoenix is obviously fire. Dragons symbolize rain, therefore water, and the tiger is air. North, East, South, West." |
Kay raised her hand again. "It was the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles, Professor Virohsa." |
ooc: *pout* I said it first! *cries* Nadia raised her hand again, "There were various philophers. Some of them were Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes and Heraclitus." |
Jessica raised her hand. " we associate with the elements as guides " " plants can have different types of powers, some are fire, some are water, some are earth, and some are air" |
Professor Virohsa looked at Peony. "That may correct, however, we are focusing on Greek Philosophy". She turned towards Kay who was now answering the question. "Good, 1 pt awarded", she replied. She listened to the other responses and frowned. She didn't ask for those details. "Thank you Nadia and Jessica".. "The premise that everything was formed from these four elements was developed by the Greek philosopher Empepedocles of Sicily. Lets start talking about the four different elements. Lets begin with the element of Earth. What does Earth represent?" |
Hoping she finally knows a correct answer, Ginn raises her hand saying: "Earth represents just that. The land and plant life that grows on it." |
Kay raised her hand again. "Earth represents cold and dry elements." |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "Well, that's the definition of earth. I'm looking for what Earth represented in Greek Philosophy" |
ooc: Er, I might differ http://snitchseeker.com/vb3/images/smilies/dizzy.gif From a Philosophy student, Thales of Miletus was first; he was pretty much the father of Greek philosophy and to him water was the basis of all things, Emphedocles was much afterwards -__- Nadia raised her hand again, "The element earth is the name given to all material living and non-living substance on the planet, with the exception of air and water. The diversity of the ancient element earth is thus of extremely high order. Earth is the generic metaphysical name applied to all substances within the terrestrial environment. Whereas by chemical and atomic analysis, the hundred plus different atomic elements are uniquely specified as the atomic elements, the ancient element earth encompasses them all. In the form of food, to be ingested into the metabolic matrix of living systems, it shares, along with its fellow ancient elements of nature, its status an element of life, an element of survival." |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very good, 3 pts for Slytherin". "Also, the Earth represents stability, permanence and rigidity. Earth is considered a stable substance. Earth is made up of almost one hundred atomic elements; mystically, the classification of earth is an "element" of Life". "How about water?" |
jessica raised her hand. "Earth is represented in the forms of burying objects in the earth, herbalism, and making images out of wood or stone. The manifestations of the Element of Earth are all plants and trees, mountains, forests, caves, and gardens" Jessica raised her hand. "Water is represented in the forms of pouring water over objects, brew making, healing spells, ritual bathing, and tossing objects into bodies of water. The manifestations of the Element of Water are rivers, oceans, lakes, wells, fog, all drinks, and the rain" |
OOC- Please don't SPAM my thread. EDIT your post next time. Professor Virohsa looked at Jessica. "Sorry dear, we already moved on.. And no, I'm looking for the philosophical representation of Water", she replied as she continued to wait for students to answer her question. |
sorry professor |
Kali continued to take notes. She listened to everyone and the professor answeering the answers, thinking of things herself. She then raised her hand and answered, "Water chacterizes the liquid state. It is necessary for all living things to survive. A large part of the human body is made up of water. Water is a substance without stability." |
Rosa stared in front of her wondering how to describe water on a philosophical way. what would philosophers say about water? she knew she'd read it somewhere once... it was clear. it could catch the light, was translucent, cleaning... then she suddenly remembered it. she raised her hand 'some ancient greec philosophers believed everything consisted of water, that it really was the only element. and they were really close to the truth, if you think how much percent of a cucumber or a human is water. you could say water gives... life... nothing grows in the desert except some plants in oases and plants like cactuses, who know how to keep water in them for a very long time. on some way, it even is light, by reflecting it, and colour, like the rainbow.' she dropped her hand hoping she was right. |
Professor Virohsa nodded. Well done Rosa and Kari. Since your answers complimented each other, I will award 1 pt for Kari and 2 pts for Rosa. Now, how about Fire?", she asked the class. Since students didn't answer, Virohsa answered for them, "Fire is the power to transform solids into liquids, to gas, and back again. In other words, it posses power to transform the state of any substance. Fire is considered a form without substance". And, "Air is the space in which everything happens. It is the field that is simultaneously the source of all matter and the space in which it exists. Air is only the distances which seperate matter. The chief characteristic of Air is sound. Here sound represents the entire spectrum of vibration", she told the class. "Very well. I want you to read these concepts carefully. I will place the homework later on. Also, please put your name on the Bulletin Board for the Greenhouse if you want to be a Greenhouse Caretaker or Plant Caretaker". ooc- Sorry but it was going too slow and I need to go. |
Kali copied note some more notes over the professor's lecture. She then put everything back into her bag. ooc- It's Kali, not Kari. : ) |
|
Laurasia quickly finished copying down her notes & homework assignment & then packed her things up before leaving the room. |
Pacilla had listened to the professor talk about the elements and diligently took notes. She wasn't good with answering questions and almost all the time there would be others to beat her to the answer, so she had just sat quietly taking notes. She copied down the homework and made her way out of the classroom and to the common room to get a start on the homework. |
Lily quickly copied the information stated in class.Tryin to focus she listens with determination. |
Rem wrote notes as quickly as she could knowing this could be on the homework. |
Jaren scribbled furiously on the parchment, even though he had reviewed these things ahead of time and was well aware of them. It never hurt to have notes on hand, after all. |
Harmony listened to Professor Virohsa's announcements and lesson and took down notes. Maybe she'd be a plant caretaker for a day if she wasn't too busy |
Lee sat in the back with his head upon his hand. This was aqctually quite intresting. Philosophy and Elements were two of his most favourite subjects. He scribbled down notes hoping not to miss anything so that he could earn points since Hufflepuff were incredibly behind. |
