| Class #3 The century of science and technology The century is probably best known for the advances in science and technology. Its as if a new world was born for the muggles. The Paris Exposition of 1900 showed the future. Featuring wireless telegraphs, x-rays and tape recorders. There was more than 50 million visitors to the exposition. They came from near and far to see what the world was about to become. Who said "It is a new century, and what we call electricity is its God"?

| Very good Erica, 5 points for Hufflepuff. You are correct, Historian Henry Adams was amazed with the future and many things were to come. Let's begin with medicine, a hapless mistake led to the creation of one of the world's greatest scientific discoveries ever. Penicillin was born when a lab dish was accidentily left growing while a young Alexander Flemming was on vacation. The rest is history, penicillin has gone on to save billions of lives, without it the world be a much different place. Who created the first "television"?

Raising her hand tentatively, very unsure of her answer, she managed to say "I think it was Philo Farnsworth."

The first cathode ray tube scanning device was invented by the German scientist Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897. Braun introduced a CRT with a fluorescent screen, known as the cathode ray oscilloscope. The screen would emit a visible light when struck by a beam of electrons. In 1907, the Russian scientist Boris Rosing used a CRT in the receiver of a television system that, at the camera end, made use of mirror-drum scanning. Rosing transmitted crude geometrical patterns onto the television screen and was the first inventor to do so using a CRT. The first practical signal generating tubes were invented by Vladimir K. Zworykin and Philo T. Farnsworth. Zworykin invented the iconoscope, which became the imaging iconoscope. Farnsworth invented the image dissector.

| Very good nabiya, 5 points for Hufflepuff. Philo Farnsworth was the first to electronically deconstruct a moving image and transmit it to another room. While there was a heated debate over who actually created it the US Patent Office officially gave Farnsworth the credit. What can Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn be credited in creating?

| JayMay ♥ Big, yellow duckie <3 "Professor, I think Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn be credited in creating the ARPANEt in1969 for the U.S Military which is short for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, which later grew to include educational researches and then for the entertainment of residential users as well...."Jessica's hand shot up in the air and she said it all in a rush, but she bit her lip when she paused. She wasn't very sure of the answer, but it was a try, and she always answered a question when she could. She looked at the Professor hopefully.

| Very good Hermione_loves_Ron, 5 points for Ravenclaw. Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn created a protocol that enabled computers to transmit to another. Thus the beginning of the internet. The internet is a large means of information today. In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee created the world wide web. This simplified and popularized the internet and made it more readily available to the mass public of muggles. Surely this is the century to live in. Because of Flemming's discovery life expectancy rates have grown exponentially in the beginning of the century the average life expectancy was 59.3 years. Now in the 21st century the average life expectancy is 79.7 years. A 20 year increase means as people age they are healthier and when they are not we are better able to treat their illness. The technological advances make this world much more comfortable, electricity, entertainment and much more. Gone are the days of children occupying themselves in the barn, very few farms exist in urban areas now a days because of sprawling housing developments as the population grows.

Nadia wrote down what the professor was saying, stopping at some points, then writing some more. She spaced for a bit, thinking how what might have been like that, in the end... well, not to matter it now. She finished writing and then made a few notes by the side of it, while recalling things about this history. She wasn't too much into muggle matchines...

Lily frowned slightly because she didn't quite get it. I'll reread my notes later until I understand, she thought as she wrote down nearly everything everyone said.

| JayMay ♥ Big, yellow duckie <3 Jessica listened attentively to the teacher and raised her hand.
"Professor," she began. "In my Muggle school, we read that Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn created the ARPANET. Of course, it later developed into the Internet, but they didn't quite create the Internet, did they?" She really didn't understand how they could have created the Internet.
"Thank God, I attended Muggle school" she thought, frowning slightly. She didn't quite get how the others would get it - Even she was having a bit of trouble. She scribbled down everything on her notes and waited for the Professor's answer.

Lily raised her hand, even though a little voice in her head said 'don't do it!' Hesitantly, she asked, "Professor, one of my muggle school teachers said that too much technology is bad for the world and people. She said something about wasting fossil fuels...and depleting the ozone layer. And I sort of agree because future generations might never have the chance to see countryside if the farms are becoming fewer. I've never been to a farm myself, and I personally think that its cultural to see how people live off of the land directly."

He wrote down some notes, and felt like he was understanding what was going on. At Beauxbatons muggle science had fascinated him when they discussed it in class, and he still felt the same.

Pacilla wrote down notes, while listening to the teacher speak. Muggle Studies wasn't a strong subject of hers, so she wasn't able to answer many of the questions. She only knew a bit of muggle culture but not much in the area of history and science. She waited to hear more of what there was to know so she could do well on any homework assigned.

| JayMay ♥ Big, yellow duckie <3 Jessica scribbled down some more notes. She stared hard at her medium-sized, slanting join-hand writing. Then she peered at her book. Taking out a small circular white box from her bag, she opened it and quickly wore her lenses before anyone could see properly. However, she had the suspicion that some of the class had seen her wearing them. She read over her notes once more and then placed her lenses back in her bag. She hardly had trouble reading, only sometimes. They came in handy....
She paid all her attention to the teacher once more, correcting a few spelling errors in her note and then scribbling down some more points.
