Something flashed in Nadia's eyes at the first sight of the featured item, but it was gone to be replaced by a new kind of spark, of the interested kind. Yes, she had heard about the Foe Glass! In fact, she had one in her trunk...
Though interesting the concept was, there was yet another flash of something; disappointment. Finally it seemed the professor would choose all subjects to discuss? Not a possibility to bring their own doubts at all? What a blunt disappointment.
On the other hand... if you knew how to use this information the right way, you get to find one of the components necessary to construct a... well, who would have thought? Maybe this would indirectly help her other project.
Adopting a serious expression, Nadia moved to her stuff to bring paper and quill and wrote down the names of her sister, three friends and... Marcy. She figured it could come in handy. It was possibly, the last, the most difficult from the list, with Marciana's name being so long. Done with the personality number...
"Psst," Nadia whispered, leaning at Jaren. "I need your exact birthdate." (She rembered the other people's by heart.)

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ganymede Craft Slytherin Fifth Year | :: Ganymede cocked her head to the side a bit at the sight of the mirror. She then placed the borrowed book on his desk and moved in beside Nadia. Gee how convienent. Mirrors.. like I haven't seen them before. She wanted to roll her eyes. Instead, she took her favorite dove pin out of her hair and pinned it to the inside of her robe. He doesn't need to get any ideas about any other mirrors. Ganymede leaned over toward Nadia, "I was hoping to learn about the portraits too", she whispered as she pretended to yawn. ::

"August 12th," Jaren replied, shuffling over to form a group with Nadia. He had dropped Arithmancy after his OWLs, but still recalled most of the theory behind it.
His quill scribbled down the first name that came to mind halfway, then hastily scratched it out until it was a series of dark lines and rewrote underneath it.
In all, there were four names on the list he wrote, but none of them were legible. Only then did he pen down his own.

Dru, who had been sitting in a corner on her own, took in everything that professor Fox had said and wrote down three names straight away, but then seemed to get stuck. It took a little while longer and some obvious thought before she added two other people to the list.

Cecil walked into the Arithmancy lab and wandered over to a table of students. "Hello. Can you tell me what you're doing?" He asked happily.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox eyed the ministry official with a little bit of hesitation. He didn't appreciate being looked in on, even if this were simply a club. He simply nodded politely and went began organizing things in the large box on the desk, waiitng for the students to finish.

Nadia had just raised her hand to ask something, when noticing the man walking in and sitting down. At this point, it was difficult to even worry. "Attempting to create magical items," said Nadia while lowering her hand. "We are suppossed to make a mirror into a Friend-Glass -- in opposition to a Foe Glass."
She looked at her own mirror at her hand, then up. "But it doesn't look like it's the same magic of a foe glass. Here we are adding who our friends are, while a foe glass is suppossed to pick the enemies on its own," she explained.

Peony thought a little before she scribbled down the names. Bending her head so her black hair brushed her cheeks, shading her glasses, she bit the top of her quill - a bad habit. Her quill had a somewhat bedraggled look, a a rather chocolate-y smell.
Finally she scribbled down the following names:
Ashlie Moore -
"Ash," she whispered, leaning over to her friend. "When's your birthday?"
Jad Tan - July 29th
Jade Tan - July 30th
Who else...?
...The Voice...?
Empathically NO.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ganymede Craft Slytherin Fifth Year | :: Ganymede didn't formally meet the new Ministry Official yet. Although she saw him around the school. She stepped back and just watched. He acted strange, nothing like other ministry officials. He's being too nice. She thought as she eyed him. She decided to work on her friend glass. She scribbled the birthdates, her twin sister's being the easiest. This made her wonder. She raised her hand, "Sorry, But what if you share the same birthday as someone. Such as a twin?" She asked hoping that there was a good answer. ::

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox looked up. "Ah yes Ms. Craft. It will not matter. Even if you share the same personality number, it is simply coincidental. No need to worry. Once you are done, please come up here and grab a mirror."
Professor Fox indicated the mirrors now laid out on his desk. "I have taken the liberty of attaining mirrors with a varying number of sides: three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine. You may take which ever you like more, I remind students to keep in mind what the properties of numbers we discussed this term are, they will affect the magic of the individual mirror you use. Lastly, there are a number of runes indicated in your book you may choose to engrave on your mirror, I caution you to only use amaximum of three, any more and their magial properties will begin to cancel one another."

"Fascinating, yes fascinating. What is your name again? Is it all together common for students here to undertake such projects? Why, I would think device construction would be another year of training out of Hogwarts, even for simple devices." He smiled brightly and watched the students continue their work.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Raymond Luxury-Yacht (but it's pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove) | Erica pulled out some parchment and scribbled down a list of names that she felt would be important to have on her friend glass. After a few moments of contemplation and crossing out assorted names, she managed to get her list down to five people; her parents, older sister and a couple of friends.
Next, she started on their personality numbers and that took her a bit longer than she thought it would. Remebering exactly what she learned from her first year was difficult enough and without the use of her past notes, it took a few miscalculated tries before she was able to recall how the process went exactly.
Erica didn't even notice the strange man that had wandered into the room until she went up to get her mirror. She eyed him with curiousity and kept herself a large distance from the man as she came up to the professor's desk. The stranger was acting rather nice towards them all, but with a small chill down her spine she remembered that Perry was nice to her, as well. And look how he turned out, she thought. She forcibily pushed the memory of the former professor out of her mind and instead concentrated on the task at hand, picking a mirror.
She contemplated each mirror and the numbers behind them before finally deciding to take the eight sided one. She managed to remember something about the number eight being related towards navigation and movement, so perhaps the mirror would be able to give her directions to her friends if she got lost or something. It was a nice theory to speculate on and it occupied her mind when she retook her seat. Glancing at her list again, a question suddenly struck her. She raised her hand.
"Professor, are these mirrors capable of covering large distances? A person on my friends list resides in another country. Would that affect the scale of the mirror in any way? Or would they just not show up at all?" |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox nodded at Erica's question. "Good point Ms. Arbon, there are specific charms, and a few arithmantic methods of inputing the names into the mirror. Your book outlines two arithmantic methods in greater detail." He stepped over and examined her mirror. "I see you've taken the eight sided mirror, that will help as well, as their locations and positions will be more accurately depicted. Now, when you enter their number, you will enter each person's number, accompanied by four other numbers as outlined in your books, you will do this ten times. I suggest entering them in the same order every time and try engraving your mirror with the rune 'Rad,' it will help as well. Those should be enough." He nodded and moved on, examining the mirrors of the other students as well.

Nadia looked from the 4-sided mirror to the 6-sides one. Something fairly simple, she had decided. Because she was looking for factual reality and connection with the world surrounding her (or so it looked when speaking of her friends), Nadia choose a 5-sided mirror for her experiment. Again, because of the nature of the experiment, Nadia choose the symbol of Love/Art/Armony, then Home Peace, and finally to find Positive Energy.
"Oh, I'm Nadia. No, this has just been implemented. Oh, yes, well, it's a good way to encourage creativity, to satisfy the curious mind and is less restrictive approach of studies. Plus to avoid the illegal experi-- er, to allow legal experimentation."
Nadia looked down at her notations wondering if she should find the lifepath number next. She just had finished with the last personality number, 4+9= 13 / 1+3= 4. It was at the time the professor had given further instructions and Nadia had to back track. Pity, she had already chosen three symbols of the basic 16 and not the Futhark. And she didn't get something of that last instruction so she raised her hand.
"Pardon, professor, but which is our friends number? You mentioned the Personality Number and their birthdate. Should we add them up and make the Maturity number, or, I take we use the Personality number and the date comes to matter later."

Hogwarts RPG Name: November {Noe} Franze First Year | Brain Twin | MASTAH ASHURRII | Reisdent PokeNerd | Digifangirl Ashlie leaned in to her friend and whispered back "November 3. And what about you?" How queer it was, she thought, realizing that she didn't know her own friend of so many years, birthday. Did that make her a horrible friend? She bit her lip in contemplation as she began to make her own list. She wrote down Peony's name and left a space for her birthday. Here, her quill paused. Who else was there TO put on her list? No one from her family; that certainly wouldn't be a great idea. She swallowed thickly, realizing, no there were few other people she'd willingly place on her list. She bit her lip. Eric, maybe? Nikki, but she had no idea where she'd gotten off to, and Nick had long left school. She'd lost track of her school friends from back in England before she moved. "Excuse me, Professor?" she asked, selecting the seven-sided mirror. Seven was one of her lucky numbers. Her voice remained distant, as if asking him a question was a last resort - and it was. "What if we've not many people to put here? What if we wanted to later add people to the Friend-Finder? Would we be able to? Certainly, a Foe-Finder would be able to add people, as you go through life, you accumlate enemies and the such. Is it possible? I'm afraid...." she blushed lightly. "I'm afraid I don't have enough people to possibly make a proper Friend-Finder and I'd like to be able to later modify it if the times so appease me..." It was then that she glanced up from her bare paper to spy the man that she and Nadia had bumped into. Feeling slightly cheered, she smiled to him. She couldn't remember if she'd learned his name, and if she had, she couldn't very well remember it. "Hello there," she said cheerily. He seemed a bit too cheery for the nature of the Ministry, but perhaps good members did exist. "Interesting device we're concoting, isn't it? It's always nice to learn things outside the classroom that you'd not normally learn, wouldn't you agree?" |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox looked up at Nadia. "Well your book explains it Ms. Rey, but you will use both, separately. You will input two numbers." He nodded to Cecil and continued moving on, stopping by Ashlie. "Well, you odn't need to have many people. Afterall, it is the quality of your friends that truly speaks of you, not the quantity." He thought for a moment. "Though, you may add people later, but you will in essence have to do everything but re-make the mirror. Why don't you try introducing yourself and making friends with other people here? This is a club, and you are here with like-minded students, try making some friends. You don't have to worry about the people in your mirror seeing or talking to you. The mirror will only show you how close your friends are relative to you." He then nodded to Ashlie and moved on.

"November three..." muttered Peony as she scribbled the date down. "Mine's on December 19th, and you better not have forgotten the present." Only three people? That's it?
Hurriedly, Peony wrote down her father's name, and her mother's, and then, after some hesitation, also her granduncle's name. Oh no, not that old coot, sniffed the Voice. It/he/she raised no more objection however. Peony had to control her left eye tightly as it tried to swivel towards the Ministry Official, a smiling, pleasant man.By very virtue of his smile, Peony liked him. She could be a sucker for the enamels. He smiles too much, grumbled the Voice, while Peony went up to the table of mirrors. Her favorite number was Nine, influenced, maybe a little, by the fact that in ancient China, Nine was the holy number, the emperor's number. The ninth day of a ninth month was a magical day.

Effectively, Nadia found many of her doubts answred in the text book. So that, now she scanned though its pages with avid interest and for a time forgetting about the task at hand to make herself of the most information as possible. She had just finished with finding the last of the personality numbers (4+9= 13, 1+3=4) so she took the most of that free time on this task. Still, doubts cluttered her mind all too easily.
"Professor," Nadia said raising her hand again. "I dare guess the magic used for this friend finder is not that similar to the foe glass. This is why I say this...
"If I'm not wrong, the magic of the Foe Glass acts authomatically. Instead of adding the people to be shown, they are added when they become enemies. A list which, as Ashlie pointed out, grows. It's more like the kind of magic that might be used in an object such as... the famous Marauder Map? I say this because the maps shows the inhabitants of the place at all times, at past and future times.
"Contrary to show only the people added to a list previous to the creation of the map, it shows people who surely had never stepped into the castle before the map was created. Am I correct? The foe glass, it looks to pick whoever is considered an enemy to the beholder. Adding the personality number of people who are yet to be born sounds impossible."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox approached Nadia and examined her mirror. "No Ms. Rey, the magic is in essence the same. We are simply using a different method for entering the information, a less adaptable one, a less general one, a more simple method. It is less effective, but the reason we are entering the names before hand is that it helps the understanding significantly more than simply filling in the arithmantic and runic equivalent of formulae. You will be able to see as you follow the book's instructions specifically how what you'v elearned applies to this device. There are similarly ways to enter individual foes, individual cats, individual ghosts, individual trees, individual whatever you want. The point of the exercise is not to build the device, but to understand how it is built."
[ooc: note, I will be putting up a list of devices and spells (hopefully) within the week that will be contained within the book(s) so that as a club students have more freedom to do things. Please do not build or experiment with things not on the list, it becomes difficult to control the rp otherwise. Suffice it to say, as a club everyone should just RP doing whatever they are doing. If your character has trouble with arithmancy then your character should have difficulty building devices which require arithmancy, etc. Lastly, if you think a device should be on the list that is not on the list, please pm me with yoru suggestions and rational for why I should allow characters to have the cpacity to build it. Have fun.
-edit- I have just added the first 2 updates to the list, check the first post. Students should take between 7~14 days (separate posts) to finish a given device, the number will depend largely on how experienced a given student is at what is required for said device.]

Nadia nodded though the last of Fox's words, she took them as unecessary. Made her thing people just kept on misinterpretating her words. She turned yet another page of the book to find some objects that caught her attention. Put-outer, inner and arounder (*chuckles*) and 4 pocket-back pack. It was all very basic but the understanding of this experiments would sure open some gates to understanding of the difficult ones. That did some boosting to her spirits.
In fact, a 4 pocket-back pack would make it pretty nice an alterantive to her... various... inner pockets.
Finishing to trace the last of her friends' character numbers and the runes, Nadia took a look at the mirror and waited for it to show something. She suspected by now something should show, maybe a foggy mist. And many of the people involved were around, so she should be able to pick their images but... Oh! Of course! The birthday number was missing. Whatever they were suppossed to do with that.
She flipped a couple of pages to find instructions, not even realizing when the Ministry disappeared.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox nodded as he wandered around the lab. He occasionally leaned over, offering some helpful advice to the students that were having difficulties. He went to the front of the lab and reminded the students. "Now, everyone please remember, the lab will be closed during and after finals. Please finish up your friend-finders. I believe everyone's will be working fine when they are finished. Your mirrors should now show faintly glowing people-shaped clouds that will move further away or closer to the front of the mirror depending on how close they are to you. Please also remember to vote on your way out, only vote twice, more than two votes will be invalidated."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Raymond Luxury-Yacht (but it's pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove) | Flipping around in her book, Erica noticed the objects that Fox was talking about. The Friend Finder they were already doing and the 4 Pocket Back-Pack intrigued her very much. She glanced at her bag slung over the back of her chair with a curious expression. Perhaps she would be able to convert that bag into the one that was in the book. It would certainly fool lots of people, her parents for instance. She grinned slightly in a mischevious manner and filed that particular thought away for another day.
Turning her attention back to the mirror, she tried to follow Fox's given instructions. Glancing around in her book again she found the numbers that the professor had indicated and set about figuring out how to get them inputted. That took a short amount of time to complete and she quickly set off on inputting them into her mirror.
The ingraving of the rune gave her the most trouble of all. Her knowledge of Ancient Runes was very spotty, so she had to stop frequently and check up with the book to make sure she was ingraving it correctly. Still, when that part was done, she couldn't help but think that she could've done much better.
It was perfect timing on Erica's part when Fox announced to the club that there time was almost up. She sighed and scribbled down some things she found interesting from the book before she stood from her seat and put her things away. After making sure she had cleaned up everything and gathered all of her things, she made her way over to the professor.
"Professor, would it be possible to continue this sort of research during the summer? It's really interesting stuff and I'd like a chance to pursue it more, if that's possible." |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Saroja | Professor Fox looked up at Erica and appeared as if he had just scalded his hands. "Thank you for reminding me Ms. Arbon. I almost completely forgot to go over the rules."
He pulled out a stack of parchment and passed them out to the students. Quote:
Experimental club rules:
1. Students are not to experiment or teach experimentation outside of the confines of the Arithmancy Lab.
2. Students are not to experiment without the supervision of an approved professor or staff member.
3. Students are to report any and all experimentation outside of the classroom as soon as they become aware of such.
4. Students are not to remove anything except finished, approved devices from the lab, this includes all books and ingredients.
5. Students are not to experiment on any devices, spells, potions, powders, or any magical objects without approval.
6. All students are responsible for one another's safety and progression in the club.
Please sign below
I ______________________ agree to the terms written above. Professor Fox turned back to the class. "You may read as much as you would like outside of the club, but for everyone's safety, we must confine our experimentation to the lab. I do not give these rules as punishment, but because some of the experimentation in the book, if done improperly can be very dangerous for the witch or wizard and those around them. A somewhat unscrupulous aide of mine once lost three of his fingers permenantly to an experimental, portable pensieve. Hence, I will come down hard and fast on any student caught experimenting outside of the club. Students may only take their mirrors with them once they have handed in a form. This club is intended as an outlet for everyone, and I will take suggestions of objects and things you would like to pursue." He took a moment before continuing. "Also, any seventh year students who are interested in pursuing a career as a curse breaker, unspeakable, topogramancer, or similar career should see me in my office if interested. As well as any students who would like to discuss experimental or theoretical matters."
