Arithmancy Lab

This old classroom looks as though it might have once been used as a potions lab or something similar. There are a number of tables in the middle of the room, each surrounded by three stools. Each table has a number of strange looking magical objects on it as well as numerous candles, magnifying glasses, prisms, and similar instruments. A number of very old books similarly line the walls, some are propped up on ancient wooden pulpits. A large desk sits at the front of the room with a large mirror positioned above it so that all students can properly see what the teacher is doing. When not in use, the door to the lab is firmly locked.

List of Devices and Spells Within Students' Books:
  • Put-Outer - This device removes the light from torches, lights, and any other illuminating device.
Subjects Required: Arithmancy/Ancient Runes [simple], Transfiguration [simple], Charms [intermediate]
    • Variation; 'Put-Inner' (Functions largely the same, but is capable of restoring light to sources that have been put out), 'Put-Arounder' (Capable of removing and restoring light to simple sources).
  • 4 Pocket Back-Pack - This device is a simple backpack which has four large draw-strings. Each draw string opens a completely separate compartment, allowing the bag to function as four backpacks, but weighing only the same amount as a single, empty bag.
Subjects Required: Arithmancy [intermediate], Charms [intermediate], Transfiguration [advanced]
  • Friend Finder - Shows how close your friends (up to five, entered manually) are. They appear as foggy, bright cloud-like people in the mirror.
Subjects Required: Arithmancy [advanced], Charms [intermediate], Transfiguration [intermediate]

[OOC: Students are allowed to experiment and create any device on this list. Each device should take a significant amount of time. The class levels indicate how much knowledge is required for each item/spell. Students should RP appropriately, and ask for help necessarily to either I or others. More to come as I find time.]

Professor fox stepped into the room and walked up to the desk carrying a large box full of various things. Setting it down, he began to take some items out and set them on the desk.

Nadia walked into the room of the lab she was suppossed to meet with other people interested in this club. She had gotten herself lost more than once. And she thought she would already see Lee and Erica in there, but like her, they must have missed the notice or such. Not good for a first day, how bad.

"Good day, professor Fox," Nadia said and trying to sound friendly, added, "No one arrived yet?"

Meandering 11-10-2005 02:36 AM

Peony entered the Lab, a little dubiously. "Hello, Nadia, Professor Fox." She clutched her bag to herself. "Is this club still open? I'd like to join."

fox_in_socks 11-10-2005 02:37 AM

Professor Fox suddenly looked up, as if waking from a small nap. "Oh. Ms. Rey, yes nice to see you. No, no one has shown up yet." He pointed to a set of books he had set on the desk. They were small crimson bound books labeled A Standard Introduction to Magical Devices and Media. "Why don't you take a copy, you can examine it while you wait for the rest of your club to arrive. It has a number of introductory level devices contained within it."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 11-10-2005 02:45 AM

Nadia nodded and set to pick a book just as Peony was walking in. Her features split into a grin. Yes, she wasn't the only one here. It made it all so good, she was not liking the prospect of spending the afternoon alone with Fox.

"Sure! Come over here, grab a -" she gestured, "book." She herself sat over a pile of books while opening the one she grabbed. And also gave a small smile to the Ravenclaw. She suppossed a bit or reading was going to help with the theory of the practical part of the club, once it started.

Or... it worked as a devise cathalog.

Hermione_loves_Ron 11-10-2005 02:51 AM

Ashlie shuffled her way to the door, staring at it for a few moments. A random passerby might have thought her to be strangely intrigued in the door, as if studying it for inscriptions. Finally, as if she fell out of her gaze, or mustered the courage, she put her hand to the handle and pushed open the door. She first poked her head in before seeing Fox (mental wince), Peony (why didn't she tell her about this?) and Nadia.

She shuffled in, subconciously playing with the strap of her shoulder bag. "H-Hello there," she said, standing up a bit taller.

fr2nc1z 11-10-2005 02:52 AM

Professor Virohsa stepped inside the lab. She looked around and glanced at some of the students that were present. She nodded towards Professor Fox and found a comfortable place to stand.

fox_in_socks 11-10-2005 02:53 AM

Professor Fox nodded and gestured to the books for Peony. "Yes, the club is freely open so long as you are a fourth year or above. Please take a book, I took the liberty of travelling to London to purchase these over the weekend. They should come in handy, as this was the same book I used in my younger days."

He then nodded to Ashlie and Virohsa. "Hello. Please come in and introduce yourselves, this is a club after all."

Hermione_loves_Ron 11-10-2005 02:58 AM

Ashlie took a glance at Fox, careful to conceal her suspicion behin a look of absence in her eyes. She'd gotten good at the empty, absent look, and could even pull it up at will now. She crossed the room, tucking back her hair. She winced. She hadn't washed it in days; the curls were frazzled and pouffy.

She stopped at the books and picked one up, glancing over at Peony, then to Naida, before discovering Virosha had joined the work. The girl attempted a smile for the Slytherin Head of House but she felt so awkward doing so that it fell away from her face quickly.

Taking Back Kirstie 11-10-2005 03:03 AM

Jacques entered the room cautiously. He'd been told about this club not so long ago and thought he'd better check it out. He saw a number of other students in there, including Ashlie. He moved over to stand next to her.

Hearing Professor Fox ask them to introduce themselves, Jacques stepped forward.

"Hello everyone, I am Jacques...". He didn't really know what else to say so he stepped back again.

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 11-10-2005 03:08 AM

Nadia closed the book at being asked an introduction and up from her seat of books, she left that one book aside and... well, she felt certain responsibility, being the existance of the club quite her doing. "My name is Nadia, and I'm in seventh year Slytherin."

And there she died. She wouldn't dare say anything else and her hands fidgetted with her sleeves at her lap.

fox_in_socks 11-10-2005 03:15 AM

Professor Fox leaned against his desk and examined the students. "Yes, well, we seem to be off to a good start. Well, I'm Professor Fox, for those of you who have had me in Arithmancy. I will be supervising this club." He waited a moment then continued, "Why doesn't everyone introduce themselves, say what year they are, which is their favorite subject, which is their least favorite, and what they hope to do and get out of this club."

Hermione_loves_Ron 11-10-2005 03:19 AM

Ashlie felt a small smile cross over her lips. "I'm Ashlie, Ravenclaw Prefect, 7th year," Ashlie said. She felt like saying something along the lines of I'm in here for being a butterbeer alohic but decided that that'd be too wrong. "My faveorite class is Defense Against the Dark Arts. My least would have to be Arithmancy. Too many numbers, you know." She didn't look anywhere except at Nadia, and finally gave a smile to Jacques. "I'm just curious so I came. I wanted to see what I can learn."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 11-10-2005 03:23 AM

At Fox's words, and feeling to be increasingly hot around the face, Nadia added a bit hastly and faster than intended, "My favorite subject is Charms and Potions comes second and I don't really have a least favorite, I think." OK, now the level of blushing won't let her breath too good. "Um, and I wish for doubts to be responded, for the analysing of certain objects and..."

Torn in between not wanting to bore her mates and not make a bad impression to the professor, she added, "figure out how to make our own alternative spells and objects."

Couldn't say she didn't sound ambitious.

Mrs. Weasley 11-10-2005 04:01 AM

Terry had her Maurders Map in her hand as she headed for the Arithmancy Lab. She would have started sooner is she'd had know she'd have so much trouble finding Professor Fox on her map. He certainly moves around alot. Terry makes her way to the lab to find the door cracked open and the meeting already starting. She sneaks into the lab and finds an empty desk near where Professor Virohsa is standing. Terry smiles at the professor and says a silent hello. She then sits down and tries to catch up with what's going on with the meeting.

fox_in_socks 11-10-2005 04:14 AM

Professor fox nodded to Terry. "Ms. Weasley, why don't you introduce yourself to everyone. Tell us who you are, what you are looking to do in this club."

GanymedeCraft17 11-10-2005 04:46 AM

:: Ganymede stood up and sighed deeply. "My name is Ganymede Craft. I am a seventh year Slytherin." She pointed to her green hair. "I am in this club.. to.. learn more things." That should cover it. Since you so kindly removed my other way of watching you... She thought to herself before sitting down quickly. She pinned her hair to the side with her favorite silver dove pin, the mirrored eye shined near her right ear. She sighed and pulled out the book that she had borrowed near the beggining of term. "Professor, I wish to return this to you. Thanks." She stood up and walked over to his desk. "Shall I just place it here on the desk?" She asked with a bored expression. ::

Mrs. Weasley 11-10-2005 05:44 AM

Terry laughs under her breath at Ganymeade's comments. She not sure if she should do as Professor Fox asks or wait for him to explode at Ganymeade. "My name is Terry Weasly. I'm a seventh year and Hufflepuff prefect. I hope to learn more about the wizarding world and its artifacts in this class. Nadia has always shown a keen interest in anything to do with the wizarding world, so the fact she is helping to get this club togethe made it something I am interested in learning more about. I've also enjoyed your Arithmancy classes and hope to learns some more things from you, Professor Fox." Terry know she sounds like she's buttering the professor up, but she did find his classes fascinating.

Meandering 11-11-2005 04:12 AM

Peony sighed, and cleared her throat. "My name's Peony Tan," she said, in something like a monotone. "I'm in my Sixth Year, I'm-" She gestured at her tie. "- a Ravenclaw." Did she have to tell all these people why she was in this club?

You can always lie about it.

Once upon a time, Peony had wondered if the Voice was something like a Conscience. Rapidly, she had soon discovered, the very opposite might be true. "I'm here to enjoy myself - and hopefully learn something along the way."

Well, that was partly true.

Backslash 11-11-2005 05:01 AM

"Jaren Kymers, Slytherin seventh year and prefect." Jaren's introductions were short and to the point, as always.

fox_in_socks 11-11-2005 05:10 AM

Professor Fox nodded. "Very well. Well, I suppose I had better introduce myself. I am professor Fox, and while I can't necessarily go into specifics, I have worked in various areas of both applied and theoretical magical research throughout my career. While my general field of expertise is in location scrying and security, I have also had the great fortune to work in development with many talented witches and wizards such as professor Virohsa. Now, those of you who have had me in Arithmancy will know I run a tight ship. Experimental magic is no game, and those of you who are here are here only because you are considered to be responsible enough. Any funny business or rule breaking, and you will be out of here faster than a hasting potion." He looked at the students for a moment, then continued. "Now then, why don't we go around and everyone can say specifically what they are interested in doing in this club. For instance, what kind of magical devices are you interested in? Which types of spells would you like to experiment with? Things like this."

She-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Psycho! 11-11-2005 05:26 AM

Nadia listened on. She was pretty much unfazzed by the warning, having endured them individually and during Fox's classes over and over. It finally was growing old, or she just was getting herself more used to it. She let a small pause linger only as long as she came up with a suitable answer.

"I have no restriction of preference, professor," Nadia said and bit her lip. "I know, um, I have my own particular ideas for investigation but... wouldn't oppose to any other..." She trailed off.

"As of right now, I have a punctual doubt... It's about animated objects interaction with the reality. Especifically, what makes the main difference between moving wizarding photos and magical portraits. Only that portraits retain the thoughts of the person who was portraited and is able to fully interact with us despite the lack of subtantial situation... There's been records of objects of such nature, dark the most, but not in the case of the portrait.

"I was wondering, why was that? And how you make a portrait, different from a photo or a dark ittem."

babydriver27 11-11-2005 11:53 AM

Erica slowly stuck her head in the doorway of the room and glanced around at the proceedings. She was late. Oh, the joy. Biting her lip and doing her best not to draw too much attention to her entrance, she quietly snuck in and took a place somewhere in the back. Hopefully, she would be able to catch up on what she missed later.

fox_in_socks 11-12-2005 02:56 AM

Professor Fox reached into his box and pulled out a small 9 inch triangular mirror and showed it to the students (though it was visible from the angled mirror over his desk). "Now then, why don't we simply get started, since this is supposed to be interesting and fun for everyone. I thought we might start by constructing a rather simple, yet novel, magical device. Now, I'm sure some of the older students have heard of 'foe-finders', well we will be making a few adjustments to instead construct 'friend-finders'. These are mirrors which show the position of your friends relative to you." He showed his own mirror which had a number of fuzzy light objects mingling around inside it, with one in particular almost a simple speck in the very back.
"Now, to show the basic design concepts this will not show you all of your friends, rather we will be inputting the specific friends by hand. So, everyone should only pick about five or so friends and family members, house elves, pets, teachers, etcetera in. To do this, everyone needs to first remember what Prof. Bree taught you and write the birth number, and personality number of the people you will be including. Also write down your own. It is generally easiest if everyone simply writes down their family members or other people in the class. When everyone is done, we will move to the next topic." Professor Fox himself pulled out some parchment and began writing numbers down.
