Theme # 01: Herbology

The boy's lids were heavy with sleep, though it was only seven in the evening, and he rubbed groggy eyes, as he stepped through the doors, into the library.

Madame Pince shot him a not-too-happy look, as he pulled up a chair, and slumped down into it. He had little time to care for that, though - his herbology homework, that was due tomorrow. He knew he was too worn-out from three hours of quidditch to finish it this hour, even this night, but he had to give this a shot.

It was either that, or detention.

Theme # 02: Muggle Studies

THWACK.

She brought the tome down so hard, the table actually shook under the sudden attack.

"'Mione, wait -"

Cormac lunged after her, but she turned on her heel and swept out of the Muggle Studies classroom. She was fed up of that boy, fed up of - of Ron! How DARE he ignore her, how dare Ronald Weasley --

The angry pound in her head came to a sudden halt, and the frustration evaporated, replaced by the brisk but gentle sound of far-off footsteps, and the heavy scent of dusty books.

Hermione smiled to herself, as she stepped into the library.

Theme # 03: Transfiguration

Transfiguration gave her a headache.

But you would not know that, even if you were close to her. For the world, she was the midget in glasses, the kind of person who is always cheerful, always ready to tackle something that offers a challenge.

You would also not know that because you would often find her in the library, a tome on transfiguration propped open -- quill at the busy, eyes full of their usual twinkle.

But the happy, rather pretty midget in glasses hated transfiguration. Even if she did spend quite an hour in the library, attempting to digest it.

Theme # 04: Ancient Runes

"I hate this subject. HATE it."

She was close to tears, and Ginny bit her lip as her friend stormed into the library, marched past Madame Pince in a huff, and pretty much broke down as she flung THAT assignment across a table.

Ancient Runes.

Big 'P' scrawled at the top left.

"Come on, Orla, you know you can always drop the subject next year," Ginny said, with a glance round her surroundings - how long before Madame Pince decided she had had enough, and swooped down upon them?

"But my dad wants me to take it," Orla groaned.

Ginny sighed.

Theme # 05: Astronomy

Love-birds.

She was certain, they were! The librarian scooted closer, though she stayed in the shadows to make sure she could catch them red-handed.

"This one?" the girl asked. She held up a book, read the title off it. Something to do with Astronomy. They always see stars, those lovers, Madame Pince thought to herself.

"Yes, Sugar," the boy replied.

Sugar! Madame Pince pounced. "Pet names!" She wagged a furious finger at them. "PET NAMES!"

"It's not a pet name," the boy blinked, taking an astounded step back. "My sister's name is Sugar."

The librarian blushed.

Theme # 06: Divination

Draco Malfoy was not an enthusiast of the Hogwarts library. He had other stuff to do. Like eat. Flirt.

"Food. Girls. That all boys think about?" Pansy asked, as she stepped into the library, after him.

"No, we also think of better girls and better food," he replied, as he pulled up a chair - for himself, not for her - and dropped into it with grace only a Malfoy could have. "What's on the agenda, then?"

"Divination," she replied, with a roll of her eyes. "Which you suck at."

"Why so tangy?"

"Why such a git?"

"Don't be jealous."

Theme # 07: Care of Magical Creatures

Christmas was here, and its spirit captured hearts like fire, a blaze of merry, happy sorts. Blaise Zabini sat by a window, his arms on the table, and a small smile curved his lips when he saw that familiar shade of red hair.

"You're late."

"I didn't know you were that interested in studies," Ginny replied, with a toss of her red hair, as she placed her Care of Magical Creatures textbook on the table, and her bag next to it.

"I am in you, though," he replied, softly.

She stuck her tongue out at him.

"I know."

Theme # 08: Potions

He might not have been gentle, he might not have been encouraging, but things had been better, when Severus Snape was potions master. A death eater with mean eyes and a meaner smirk filled his shoes now, and the man who they said had killed Albus Dumbledore, was Head of the School – only occasionally wandering into the dungeons that had once been his residence at the castle, to see how lessons, how the non-existent curriculum progressed.

The library lay in perfect ruins, brilliant in its neatness, but spooky in its desertion. A girl stepped in -- turned on her heel.

Theme # 09: Defense Against the Dark Arts

"Get OUT of my face."

Bellatrix Black's wand was at the ready, but the boy only smirked. "The itty bitty firstie thinks she can scare me --"

Bellatrix's eyes darkened with anger like the library had never seen before. "One more word, and I will -"

The boy burst into laughter.

There was a flick of her wand, a flash of lighting -- and he never messed with the witch who was later acknowledged as one of the best at Defense Against the Dark Arts, while at school.

One of the best at Defense, even though she had gone completely astray.

Theme # 10: Arithmancy

Hermione frowned as she scanned the top shelf. It was sort of dusty, but that was fine with her. The dust of books had a lovely scent.

What made her frown, however, was the neglected air of this section of the library. Sure, the floor had been swept only yesterday; sure, there were no cobwebs on the high ceiling - but the books were good as new, as if they had never been touched.

"Odd," she said, out loud.

"Not really," Ginny grinned, from behind her. "You're the only one who tries to get Arithmancy, 'Mione."

"Thanks for the compliment."

Theme # 11: History of Magic

It stunned Gred and Forge that they had never, not in four years of study at Hogwarts, pulled a prank that centred on the school library.

It was a friend who wore her hair in pink braids, and had a really happy voice, who first brought this surprising nugget of information to their attention, during a History of Magic class.

The point? The twins were so astounded, they had decided the only way they could ever forgive themselves for this gross injustice towards the library, was by ...

Well, by carrying out what they had just sneaked into the library for.

Theme # 12: Charms

Crookshanks had not had a happy day. Some other cat had pounced on his breakfast before he could make his move; his owner had not petted him, in the common room, because she was distracted; and the boy with the glasses had accidentally stepped on his tail. Of course, Crookshanks had sunk a claw in the boy's sock, but that had not been of much help.

The cat eyed the girl with the big book of Charms in front of her, as he stepped into the library, then leaped into her lap because she looked all warm and happy.

Theme # 13: Quidditch

It was a very cold, very rainy night, and two well-known pranksters were wet to the bone.

"Some chaser-chaser match," Sirius Black grinned, as he shook water out of his hair. "Though I honestly thought someone was going to catch us out of bed." He sounded as if he did not care, though. As if he had been caught out of bed, more than once.

"Let's sneak into the library," James Potter replied. "Warm ourselves in peace, before we head to bed." Because that was one place no one was going to look for them.

Never had.

Theme # 14: Hogwarts, a History

She wore her hair in two ponytails, and was eighteen. The new librarian had no idea how to tackle a library this large, and she pouted as she dropped the first book she picked.

Books. They were her passion, yes, but she had never had to take care of this many. With a frown, she bent to pick up the book she had dropped. Hogwarts, A History. -- She had read this one, before - and my, was it good to see it, again! Because it reminded her of familiar things. Of freshly-baked bread, of the scent of old wood.

Theme # 15: Room

"Helga."

Rowena! Helga's mouth curved into a pretty smile, when she saw her friend enter. There was paperwork scattered on the former's desk, and her spirits were high, for it looked like their plans to start up a school of magic would be quite successful.

"How are you, today?" she asked cheerfully, as she motioned to the seat in front of her -- for Rowena to make herself comfortable.

"I have been thinking," Rowena replied, as she sat down, rather thoughtfully. "... and I believe our school will need room for a library."

And that, my friends, was the start.

Theme # 16: Dragonhide gloves

Had it been able to think, the library would have been stunned. It had seen pranks, but never such anger. Not, at least, on so little a reason.

But the girl with the short hair was furious. She slammed her dragonhide gloves on a desk, threw her bag on the floor, kicked a chair ... and then left.

To be fair to her, twelve-year-old Pansy Parkinsion really was unhappy. Her father had refused to get her a pony for her birthday, and she couldn't even throw a tantrum, because no one at Hogwarts seemed to care.

How sad.

Theme # 17: Cauldron

Good gosh!

Madame Pince's eyes widened. Was that -- why, yes it was! It was certainly the Weasley twins, complete with ginger hair, identical grins and ... a cauldron.

"Mr. and Mr. Weasley!" The librarian shouted, red in the face. "What do you think you two are doing?"

In the act of dragging the enormous, black cauldron over to a table, the twins paused. "Would you believe me if I say it's research work?" Fred asked cheerfully.

"No." Madame Pince looked so angry, anyone else would have run for their lives. "Out. Now."

"But it's research!" George protested.

"OUT!"

Theme # 18: Whomping Willow

Was she late?!

Gold hurried. Because, yes, she could hurry in her pretty, new high heels. Practice, you know! The fifth year came to a halt a little way away from the library, glanced at her wrist-watch -- and saw that she was in time.

Aww.

She had been all worried for no reason!

But she had been a little busy, what with her visit to the Whomping Willow and all. Oh well, she could forget that, for now. Because it was time to start that study session she had to head.

Her first study session, as a Prefect.

Theme # 19: Wand

It was a quiet night. Or would have been, if a certain boy with glasses and messy black hair had not been in the library, well past curfew.

But Harry Potter had big things on his mind. Sure, he was only eleven but, even then, he had seen a lot more than many boys his age. But maybe that was for the good. Maybe... time would show you that, better.

He held up a lantern, its light like that of a faintly-lit wand -- not really bright, but comforting all the same.

How thankful he was, for his Invisibility Cloak!

Theme # 20: Hogsmeade

The library was silent, tonight.

It was not often that the place was totally empty. Even if there were no students - which was rare, for Hogwarts had its loners, when the researchers took to vacation, to Hogsmeade, to anything that kept them away from books - there was always the librarian.

Not tonight, though.

For tonight there would be dance and music and joy and, maybe, lit enigma, novelty. It was the eve of the Yule Ball, and a group of girls twittered happily by a narrow corridor, not too far off.

Nobody stepped into the library.

Not even Hermione Granger.

Theme # 21: Veela

Pffttt.

What was with this Hogwarts? Fluer was tired of it. The weather was too cold, and the food was pretty tasteless, if you ask her.

"What do zo want?" the part-Veela snapped, at the boy who had come over.

"You dropped this," he said. "In the library." He held up her brooch. Her favourite brooch.

"That library is too cold," she replied, sharply. "That's why I had to leave in such a hurry. Humbug!" Really, that had nearly cost her, her favourite piece of jewellery.

"You're welcome," the boy said, with a roll of his eyes.

Theme # 22: Kneazle

Exams.

How stupid.

Draco Malfoy rolled his eyes, as he stepped into the library. At fifteen, he was a lot more handsome than most boys his age.

Which made it all the more unfair that he had to study, right?

Right.

The fifth year spotted a table away from the rest, walked over to it, and pulled up a chair for himself.

"I'm so handsome, you should pull yourself up automatically, when I come over," he told the chair, as he sat down.

A kneazle that had managed to snuck into the library, blinked at him and ran away.

Theme # 23: Telescope

The little telescope could punch. The girl with the big, black-framed glasses knew this because she had grabbed it, and now sported a black eye.

Black eye without a cause.

How unique.

She sat at a desk by a window now, and her hands were placed on top of the big book of Calculus she was supposed to be going through, but that she did not really like. The library was empty, for the most part, but she still couldn't concentrate.

Why study, when you could rather think of chocolate and really shiny things, like glue?

Well, yes!

Theme # 24: House-elf

AchCHOOO.

Madame Pince had had enough. "Miss Edgecomb!" the librarian said, her gaze all hawk-like. Not that that had much effect on Marietta -- she was too busy sneezing. "You are disturbing everyone in the library!"

"But -- achCHHOO - I'm the only - accHHOO -- one in the library -- acchHOO -- right now."

"Don't lie to my face, girl!" Madame Pince shouted. She was all red in the face, now. Not a pleasant sight, trust you me. "My house-elf could do better than you!"

"But --"

"Am I, or am I not, in the library with you?"

"Yes, but --"

"Out!"

"Acch-CCHHOOO!"

Theme # 25: Sorting Hat

"The Sorting Hat ..."

Professor Binns continued to speak, and the tiny twelve-year-old tried to stifle a yawn. Gosh! She was here to study, not sleep.

She swung her legs off her seat - too high for her. She was small, even for her age - and got off. Nobody paid her any attention, because the majority of the class was asleep - and, of course, Professor Binns was too busy putting everyone to sleep, to notice.

She waved to the class - the class, not the people - and skipped off, to the library. She was going to study this subject, by herself!
