Theme # 01: Herbology

It was that time of the year, again. The time of the year when snow peeks out, and moisture freezes, and twilight looks like midnight.

When Christmas is about to arrive, and nothing can dampen one's spirits.

Harry Potter pressed his face against the windowpane, and stared out into the street. He was ten, an age that guaranteed he had still not come in contact with Hogwarts or Herbology or Headmaster Dumbledore, and little flakes fell through the air.

"You. Boy."

He turned round, to look at Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley, huddled together on a sofa.

Theme # 2: Muggle Studies

"JAMES POTTER!"

Oops. James grinned. He sat on the floor, a book - 'Muggle Studies: Tales of the Fantastic' - placed in front of him.

Raaaiight next to the cauldron that belched sparks at intervals, causing little Harry [seated atop James's lap] to clap.

"Lils! Didn't know you would wake up this early on a Sunday, love." He tried to sound sheepish, for her benefit.

Lily rolled her eyes, not fooled. "Sometimes, I can not believe that I married -"

"Yes, I know it's hard to believe your good luck," James grinned, as he poked a ladle into the cauldron.

Theme # 3: Transfiguration

"I want him to have your hair."

He had extinguished the lights, ten minutes ago, and he had thought she had gone to sleep. But James realized, now, that Lily was still awake.

"I love yours," he said.

"But I want him to have yours," Lily repeated. "I don't think red will look good on him. Do you think red will look good on him?"

"I'm sure he will be good," James said, comfortingly. "But you should be asleep, Lils."

"I hope he's alright at Transfiguration," Lily responded. "I was never good at Transfiguration."

He kissed her.

Theme # 4: Ancient Runes

Lily Evans looked furious: the moment she saw James Potter, she threw the one book on her - her Runes Dictionary - at him.

"Ouch," James said. He could have blocked it, but if it made her happy, ah well. "Lily Evans, future Potter! What in the name of the world are you doing?"

"Future Potter, my socks!" Lily said, eyes narrowed. "I can't believe you bewitched Severus's -"

"Lils -" He took both of her hands, in his. "Calm down. You sound like you want to adopt him."

"Maybe I do!" She said, in anger.

James stared. "Really?"

She blinked.

"No."

Theme # 5: Astronomy

It was six in the morning and Lily, Harry in her arms, decided that being a mother was harder than she had thought it would be - the only thing she could predict about babies was their unpredictability.

That, and their need to cry a lot.

This morning, she had tried everything she could, to make Harry go back to sleep. She had fed him; given him a toy broomstick [the size of her palm]; shaken James awake to sing him something; even fished out an old astronomy book, and showed him all sorts of pretty pictures.

Harry continued to cry.

Theme # 6: Divination

Lily looked up, from the couch. Her head was propped up on a pillow, and she held Harry, the baby raised in the air.

"Welcome home," she said.

James smiled, as he stepped into the room. "Good afternoon, ma'am," he said, bending down to kiss her. "You too, little tot." Because Harry had proceeded to attach himself, to his father. "Guess who's going to join us, for dinner."

"Doesn't take a Diviner to figure that out, not with that huge grin on your face," Lily pointed out, as she reached up to hug him.

James grinned. "Sirius."

Theme # 7: Care of Magical Creatures

Lily sat up, and rubbed her groggy eyes - only to find out that the room was brilliantly lit up.

Goodness. She had slept half the day away!

Carpet slippers on, she rushed down the staircase - and paused. It was worse than she had expected. Two broken plates, a pile of towels, and a puddle of water in the kitchen.

"I thought I would make Harry something to eat, and clean the place up," James said. "It seems I have achieved a certain... uh, level of success."

"This," Lily said, decisively. "Is why I took Care of Magical Creatures in school."

Theme # 8: Potions

"Have a good night, James. Lily."

Soanne Manderz, Potions Mistress at Hogwarts and member of the Order of the Phoenix, rose to leave. The moment the door had closed behind her, Lily turned to her husband.

"James?"

He looked up, from the fire. "Darling?"

She sat down next to him. "Is it wrong to be afraid?"

"Not at all," James said, his arms rising to hold her. "Quite the contrary, in fact. There can be no courage without fear, Lils."

Lily looked up, into his eyes. "Will we make it?"

James did not respond, only pulled her closer to himself.

Theme # 9: Defense Against the Dark Arts

"Do. Not. Kid. Me."

"Seriously, Lils, it wasn't my fault!" James pretended to cower. Behind him, Sirius did not even have the grace to do that: he grinned.

"Come on, Lily, be nice to the poor guy," Sirius said. "You know he was only practicing Defense tactics."

"Your defense tactics," Lily said, eyes narrowed. "Have ruined my lounge, Sirius Black."

"His," Sirius said, cheerfully.

"WHAT?" James's jaw dropped open. "It was your idea! I told you something would go wrong. It always does, when -"

"But you were the one who -" Sirius began.

"Oh, forget it," Lily said, exasperated.

Theme # 10: Arithmancy

"Prongs!"

James did not look up, from his book. "Mm?"

"Your shirts smell like... cloth."

"I'll take that as a compliment." He inclined his head.

"They're too big," Lily added.

"Would you like to compare them to arithmancy, or that life-threatening perfume Sirius's latest girlfriend wears, next?"

"Your shirts beat both," Lily said, mock seriously.

He raised an eyebrow, put down his book, and looked at her. "Why do you wear them, Lils? No one asks you to."

"Because they're comfortable." Lily stuck her tongue out at him, and pulled the blanket over her head.

Theme # 11: History of Magic

"This is absurd!" Lucius Malfoy's voice was positively thunderous. "He is constantly second. Second to that mudblood, in studies. Second to that Potter, in Quidditch. Second to - "

"He almost failed History of Magic, last year," Narcissa supplied, since her husband seemed to have run out of faults possessed by a certain, platinum-haired boy they had raised, together - or, rather, thought they had raised, together. Perhaps not even thought.

"Exactly," Lucius said, livid. "You do realize that -"

"That he takes after you? Why, yes I do, Lucius." She set down her cup of tea, and rose to her feet.

Theme # 12: Charms

He had always been intelligent. Neither through books, nor through instinct - Draco Malfoy was cold-blooded logic.

Though, of course, at the of fourteen, it was not apparent to most how much of that he could possess. He was, in many ways, his parents relived - Lucius's anger, Narcissa's patience. Lucius's calculations, Narcissa's foresight. They shaped him up, toned him down.

Professor Flitwick placed a parchment on his desk. "An O," the Charms teacher beamed. "I must say I am pleased, Mr. Malfoy."

Draco knew his reasons, for allowing himself to get that grade, on this assignment.

Theme # 13: Quidditch

Draco swung a leg over the brand, new broomstick, and shot off into the air. It did not take a genius to figure out that he was an excellent flier - one who valued speed over teamwork, but an excellent flier, nevertheless.

"He's good, Lucius." Narcissa Malfoy laid a hand on her husband's forearm. The two watched their son - she under the shade of a printed umbrella; he on his side, refusing to allow his gaze to follow his son's flight, only to glance at him, at irregular intervals.

"Good isn't good enough, Narcissa," he said, quietly.

Theme # 14: Hogwarts, A History

Lucius Malfoy, when he stepped into the bedroom of his eight year old son, was livid. He grabbed the nearest item [a copy of Hogwarts, A History Draco had never read] and flung it across the floor.

"How dare you allow that girl inside the house, Draco?"

Draco faltered. "She's a friend, father," the boy said, eyes that had yet to assume the power to hide each emotion behind steel bars, nervous. "She said she wanted to see my room."

"No mudblood," Lucius said, coldly. "Was, is or will be welcome in my house. Is that understood?"

"Yes, father."

Theme # 15: Room

Lucius's eyes filled up with anger. "Say what you will. The Dark Lord -"

"I don't care about your Dark Lord!" Narcissa, that epitome of elegance, of indifference, of patience -- anger made her struggle for poise.

"You can't get away with this, Narcissa." Lucius's tones were cold. "The Dark Lord is the future."

"I curse such a future!"

"Get a grip on your emotions, woman."

"It is time, I believe, that I refuse to, Lucius." She drew herself up to her full height and, turning her back on him, walked out of the room.

Right into Draco.

Theme # 16: Dragonhide gloves

Lucius slipped off his dragonhide gloves, shook off his shoes, and settled into the bed. It was cold, despite the fire in the huge fireplace.

Next to him, Narcissa stirred. He touched her cheek. She sat up. "Lucius?"

He withdrew his hand, immediately.

"Yes?"

She looked up at him. Even in the half light, he could appreciate how beautiful she was. Her eyes were large, almost liquid. "I love you."

He sighed. "I love you, too, Cissy. You - and Draco -- and that, my love, is the problem." He looked away, pulled the blanket to his chest, and closed his eyes.

Theme # 17: Cauldron

"It is my son's wedding!" Narcissa said, narrowing her eyes. "I shall have cauldron cakes if I so wish, Mr. Malfoy!"

"Pardon me for my insolence, shall you now, Mrs. Malfoy?" Lucius asked, one eyebrow raised.

Draco sighed. "Mother." His tones were patient, but firm. "I understand the need to have a stylized menu, but perhaps we can focus on the French cuisi -"

"Look at you, not even married yet, and already speaking your wife's language," Narcissa said. "Decide your own menu, then."

"Quit acting like a child, mother."

"Ironic that it is my child telling me that."

Theme # 18: Whomping Willow

Narcissa sat by the fireplace, elbow placed gently on the arm of a green sofa.

"You do not want to weaken him," Lucius said, as he took the seat next to her. "Your stories. One would think the Whomping Willow was a plaything. Let him see - and size up - the place for himself, Narcissa."

"You have toughened him up more than enough, I daresay, Lucius." There was scorn in her tones.

"You disapprove." It was not a question, but a statement.

"I am a Black, Lucius," she said, quietly. "Strength runs in my blood - viciousness, I have long forbidden to."

Theme # 19: Wand

The tinkle of a bell, the scent of dark wood, the dust of old times - Draco sensed, felt, each as he stepped into Ollivander's.

"Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy," the old man said. His eyes were large, almost like mists, and Draco felt ignored. Perhaps he was permitted to. He had, after all, gauged that he would be the focal point, today - Mr. Ollivander's greeting, one directed at his parents, made him feel otherwise.

"The young master will choose a wand," Lucius replied, curtly.

"It is the wand that chooses the wizard, Mr. Malfoy," Ollivander replied, with a bow.

Theme # 20: Hogsmeade

The village that seemed, to Hogwartsians who visited it for the first time as third years a collection of twinkles, of enchantments, failed to impress Draco.

"Mother."

Narcissa came to a halt. Lucius, annoyed by the disturbance, did not.

"You know better than to interrupt one of your father's orders, Draco."

"I do not," the boy said. "Believe you are following an order, mother."

"I am - and often do - not. It is your introduction to Hogsmeade, Draco."

"Perhaps I don't want it."

"Perhaps you should learn to shut your mouth," Lucius - who, unknown to them, had returned - glowered.

Theme # 21: Veela

"MUM!"

Ginny Potter wondered if she was going to regret that she had left the children alone, for half an hour. Granted, it was the Quidditch World Cup, lots of officials to see to the place - but those kids could burn down a house, and claim otherwise.

"Is everything alright?"

"James tried to chat up a Veela!" Lily Luna said, at once. The boy in question grinned at this accusation, and said, "I think Lily's still upset that that chap wouldn't talk to her. I'm telling you, Lil, he had an abnormally large nos -"

"MUM!"

Ginny shrugged.

Theme # 22: Kneazle

It had not been her fault. The little girl insisted that it had not. She had only carried the kneazle home, because it had none.

Of course, Ginny and Harry had not been informed.

"You were asleep!"

It had been James's fault, Lily insisted. He had tickled the kneazle's belly, because he thought the creature might find that fun. The kneazle had bitten James, twice; sunk its claws into Albus's pillow; and caused Harry and Ginny's favourite vase to fall to the floor and shatter, on its way out.

It had not been Lily's fault.

Theme # 23: Telescope

The problem with siblings, Ginny reflected, is that they cannot live without each other - or with each other.

"I saw it first!" James said. He held, as if his life depended on the act, one end of a medium-sized, children's telescope. The other end was being clung to, even more tightly, by his younger brother.

"That doesn't make you the owner!" Albus Severus said, his big eyes nervous despite the fact that he tried to make himself sound tough. 'Manly,' Lily would call it.

"Does, too!"

"Does not!"

"MUM! I want a telescope, too!" Lily pitched in.

Theme # 24: House Elf

Harry Potter laid down his morning newspaper, and looked across the dining table, at his little daughter. She was hardly eight - and already acted like a Queen.

"It's a phase," Ginny had said, quite wearily, the night before. "She hangs out with Melissa, what do you expect? It will pass, Harry."

Harry was far less certain.

"What did you say, Lily?" He asked.

"I want a house elf, daddy," the little, wide-eyed girl said. "Mel has a house elf."

"No."

Lily, disused to such direct refusal, blinked. "But Mel has a house elf, da -"

"No," Harry said, firmly.

Theme # 25: Sorting Hat

"I... I don't want to be a Slytherin." Albus Severus's voice was nervous. The last thing the kid was, was a coward. But nervous, he became more quickly than one could think possible.

"You're a Slytherin, down to your toenails," James snickered. "I bet dad is worried that you'll end up there. He wouldn't tell you, of course," James added, loftily. "Wouldn't want to worry you."

"I'll tell the Sorting Hat I want to be a Ravenclaw!" Albus declared, desperately.

Ginny poked her head into the living room.

"Stop teasing your brother, James."
