Default Janus Galloglass

For all your magical mirror needs, Janus Galloglass is the place to be. Sure, you could go to some other knick knack store that doesn't specialize in mirrors, but if you want quality, if you want customization, if you want pure craftsmanship, then you're in the right place. When you walk inside you'll have a hard time not seeing your own reflection somewhere on the walls and displays, and yet equally, not every mirror shows you yourself as you might expect. Some show reflections of completely different places and faces, some show you what you would look like as a different gender or age, some show you how others see you, and some appear not to reflect anything at all. Many of the mirrors call out compliments or advice as you walk close to them. Some seem to watch you as you make your way around the store.

Janus Galloglass deals in three main areas when it comes to mirror making: mirrors for communication, mirrors for vanity and appearance, and mirrors for divination, though there are other types of mirrors available for other needs - just ask. Fancy a foeglass? Need a talking mirror to tell you how fabulous you are? Want a hand mirror charmed to never fog up? Do you need a mirror that will zoom? Maybe you need mirror parts for your telescope, or a mirror charmed to show you the back of your head. Perhaps you're in the market for a prank mirror of some variety. Whatever you need, if it isn't already on the shelves, you can get a quote here, just be aware that some more complex custom requests might take a little time to craft.

You mustn't forget, of course, that Janus Galloglass also provides a Psychomanteum that its valued patrons can make use of, for a price of course. Your Catoptromancy session can be guided too if you need a little help with interpretation, or you may pay to use the Psychomanteum by yourself for a 15, 35, or 55 minute session. Please note there are multitudes of security spells in this store. It isn't wise to try and steal when so many of the mirrors are watching you, not to mention, if you break you DEFINITELY buy, or you might just get sucked into a holding mirror until an auror can be summoned to deal with you.

A note about inventory:
At Janus Galloglass the price of a given mirror depends on several factors that make an exact pricing menu unwieldy and difficult. She had only gotten the briefest of details as to what had happened at Hogwarts over the past term from her daughter, even though Bryn knew she could have just sent a message to Roderik to ask what it was Stasya had sent him over the holidays. Stas hadn’t wanted her to see what was written in the notebook, and she respected her daughter’s privacy to the extent it wasn’t leading her into danger. Either that or leading her down her father’s path, but she knew her daughter. She knew that wasn’t likely, even as she still harbored the fear that Vladimir’s choice wasn’t actually going to keep them safe. The fear that had strained her relationship with Stas’ uncle, even if she hoped that was slowly healing as well.

There was a lot of conflict in her head, most of which Bryn knew instinctively wasn’t going to be fixed easily and most definitely not with a trip to Diagon Alley or immersing herself in Gobstones like she usually did when there were willing babysitters for Demyan, as Stas was doing now. Time healed all wounds, people said, but she was afraid hers were too deep to completely heal. Hope hadn’t died entirely, but she knew she wasn’t actively pursuing it. Just as she knew her daughter wanted it for her.

It was thoughts about Stas that had propelled her to step inside the mirror shop and start perusing the shelves. Maybe a set of two-way mirrors would help things when she was at Hogwarts. If anything, they ought to be quicker than letters.

Cole had his hands in his pockets as he walked into the mirror store. He wasn’t fully sure why he was here other than the near constant prompting from his son and daughter to get a mirror so they could keep tabs on him.

He shook his head at his twins worries, he was a grown man, he could.. mostly take care of himself. But the healers and even his therapist had told him not to cut himself off from him family again.

That how.. well. His throat tightened a bit at the memory before he took a breath and focused on what was in front of him.

Mirrors.

Right.

Right.
Her thoughts had definitely been elsewhere. Bryn hadn’t actually thought it would have taken so much consideration just to pick out a set of mirrors, yet she’d looked at several and just set them back down without too much of a look. It wasn’t that she thought the idea was bad. Getting a set of mirrors so Stasya wouldn’t be completely isolated at school was far from a bad idea, provided it wasn’t an issue at Hogwarts. The lack of owls home a few months into last term had gotten to her more than she’d thought, considering it wasn’t as if she wasn’t used to months without her eldest child at home. Gobstones was a distraction, as was her three-year-old son, but the absence of real news had driven her to distraction.

She’d just picked up another mirror, delicately framed in carved wood, when she realized she’d been joined by another person. “What would you think of this?,” she asked softly, tucking a stray curl of hair behind her ear with the hand not holding said mirror. It was entirely an innocent question. Even if the man hardly looked like he was likely the shopkeeper since he looked nearly as distracted as she felt.

It was an important bit of business to get new two-way mirrors to use while Kai was at Hogwarts - the old set they had weren't at all reliable anymore and Tally felt something more portable would be better, so she had donated the old ones (ignoring the mirrors' protesting) and tacked mirror shopping on to their to do list for the day. The kids were with their grandparents and she had her husband to herself. After shopping: lunch, and then? Well, whatever they felt like for a kid-free afternoon and evening.

As a muggleborn, Talia found this store to be equal parts fascinating and creepy - some of the mirrors here were entirely too weird or obscure in purpose for her tastes, but it was the best place to get what they needed. Something reliable. Kai had mentioned security mirrors too so he could look at those while they were here.

The door jingled as they stepped through, Talia leading the way and casually tugging Malachi Trent in behind her.

"I wonder if any of these mirrors would show me how I'd look as a blonde," she said to him, a twinkle in her eye. Hardly serious, but still, maybe they would find more of interest than expected in here.

While it may have been too drastic to consider quitting his new job before he began just to avoid all this shopping it necessitated, it was still the thought at the forefront of the man's mind. It left him praying his own children stayed small forever; at some point he would need to take them school shopping and while it was years away, this trip to the glass shop had him dreading it very much.

"We could go home and I could show you what you look like as a blonde there." He suggested, allowing himself to be tugged along. There were certainly charms that could get it done.

The mirrors didn't bother him. They didn't hold much intrigue for him either but he could concede that this was an important trip--one he wished Tally had taken while he stayed him and watched the house. You...just never knew....what crazy people existed outside the home. He was offering to be a knight in shining armour but noooOOOoOOOo shopping was apparently more important than securing their home.

"Let's get one big enough so the kids don't fight to get a good view."

"You could, but then you might decide you like it too much and not change me back, " Tally said with her habitual smile, not at all serious. They walked past a mirror that entirely switched their apparent genders and Tally let Kai's hand go so she could shop with her hands as much as her eyes, fingertips gently tracing the contours of this or that frame.

"Big at your end or at ours? I wonder if they do mismatched sets, " Tally mused out loud. "Something more portable on your end may be easier." But anything that kept the kids from bickering at home was good in her books too. "Did you see they have security mirrors, Kai?" He had wanted peace of mind and all that. Aaaand... now she was distracted by a mirror showing the reflection of the back of her head. Convenient!

He actually laughed at that, taking a moment to imagine her with blonde hair. It wasn't that she wouldn't look good blonde--his wife looked good with EVERYTHING but "You know I've never been into blondes." They were alright, he'd nearly tried one back in the day at Hogwarts and everything. "You could trust me with your hair." Which, on it's own still wasn't true as evidenced by any time he convinced Mavis to let him do her hair or those times Tally was out and he was making efforts BUT no matter what her hair looked like, when he was done, he wouldn't leave it blonde.

Safe.

"Big at yours, I suppose. I don't want Kale shoving Mavis out of the way because he "can't see"." Like he sometimes did when they watched TV. Not for the life of him could the man understand why with all the comfy chairs they had, both insisted on sitting riiiiiight up close, then complaining when each other got in the way.

By the time his mind registered her words on security mirrors, he'd already lost her to another sort.

"Eye on the prize, Love." Wait was that the back of his head? Was that what it looked like? Without really thinking, he nudged her over by a bit to get a better look. "Does that look like the beginning of a bald spot to you??" He wasn't READY for that--and in all honesty was only seeing things but his mind had already accepted what his eyes told it.

They even got distracted in the same ways, see? She contemplated teasing for a split second but instead just reached up to caress said non-existent bald patch on the back of his head, watching in the back-to-front mirror. Plenty of hair. "Of course not. But let's check again after the year is up - see if Hogwarts induces stress baldness." Tally paused and then added ingeniously, "If it does, my love, we'll get you a hat."

Cole was absentmindedly looking down at a mirror that was framed in black wood when a soft voice caught his attention, his bright blue eyes looked over at the woman who had spoken and he looked at her for a moment before moving his gaze to the mirror she was indicating.

It was soft and delicate and he wondered briefly if Sy would like something similar, though she would probably want something a bit more pink. A soft smile crossed his face at that thought before he finally replied to the woman standing next to him.

“Well I feel it’s a bit to delicate for my personal taste, but I feel my daughter would like it, ” He said as he gave an honest opinion. “Is if for a girl? Because I think that would be a good choice. ” He said as he peered down at the mirror for a moment before turning his attention back to the woman in front of him.

"If you were one, I'd make an exception." Was the closest he'd come to agreeing with that statement. It wasn't what Tally looked like that made her his wife. It was a lot deeper than that and good thing too. Pretty women were delightful in their own right but then what?

Malachi kept staring at the back of his head through the mirror, his view slightly skewed now that her hand was there but he could SWEAR he'd seen a developing bald spot. After a moment, he nodded at her suggestion. "Fair. Do I get to stop stressing long before it gets there?" Like say he told a kid not to do something and the kid....did and suddenly the entire wizarding world was under threat, was he allowed to turn his stressers off and just zen his way through?

He was a responsible man, but he didn't like to be responsible for easily avoided things.

"The school, the students and the professors there have been a mess there from what I've heard. Just be prepared to take me wig shopping and love me anyway."

"Mm... lucky me." Talia said, not having had expected otherwise but still finding herself amused by the conversation. She caressed his hair a little more then traced her hand down his back and gave his behind a little pat too. A good husband, he was. Her favourite one, even.

"Just in case I'll be sure to pack you some scented candles, The Little Book of Calm, colouring books, meditation music, Tibetan singing bowls," Like the ones her mother had given them a few anniversaries ago, "a miniature zen garden, incense, a yoga mat... what else?" Yes, what other ridiculous stress-relieving things could she put in a care package for him? She'd do it too, partly for the lulz and partly because she genuinely would rather he roll his eyes at his silly wife and smile about it than actually get stressed, considering how potentially stressful his new job could be.

"I'd love you even if you were as bald as an egg, the kids might be embarrassed to be seen with you if you come home without hair though, my love." She grinned at him and resumed her slow walk around, looking at the mirrors - the back of HER head had been just as it should be, glossy brown hair, no frizz, so she didn't need to linger in front of that one.

"I'd never ask you to go to all that trouble for me, darling." His tone mimicked the sincerity he was so graciously trying to play off. "Much easier to just pack yourself." He followed along behind her, still casting the occasional glance at the mirrors. "I can unpack everything else in my trunk, pop you in there. Stress shows up and there you are. The perfect gift." The absolute best. He'd forget everything else for sure. "The children.....we can pack up and send to your parents--or mine, alternating maybe," otherwise his mother dearest would never let him get some quiet again, "they can ship them to us, when we're done cuddling them we send them back."

Why had this plan never been thought of before? It was perfect if you asked him. So convenient. Was that what other parents did?

The bald as an egg earned a proper cringe. It came fully equipped with a shudder and a pull of his face to display his discomfort. Whether she loved him with it or not. "I'd be inclined to agree with the children. I wouldn't wanna be seen with me either." And at that he patted at the back of his head. It was an absent-minded sort of gesture as he considered the possibility further.

"Depending on how much I end up missing you, the kids will end up having a lot more Hogsmeade weekends than they know what to do with." And he couldn't see them complaining about that.

"That would be one way of starting off your service at the school - a security breach!" Terrifying really! Just to illustrate such a thing, Tally jumped around 180 degrees to face him in an attack stance and pointed both of her index fingers at him, like she was dual wielding and her fingers were the wands. Pew pew! Reach for the sky, Headmaster Trent!

Well if she did get in his trunk and jump out like this, at least he'd be distracted from his stresses, no? Maybe he was onto something, even if she was pretty sure his mum would have a hard time sending the kids back to them in that scenario, even just for cuddles. Yes, better not to spoil the mother-in-law, though Tally adored her, she was certain that if she got too used to having her grandchildren around all the time she'd want to keep them forever. And to be entirely fair, who wouldn't? Kale and Mavis were blessings.

Oh yes. Hogsmeade weekends. Tally hadn't looked forward to those since her own school days. She hoped they'd be frequent. Though it wasn't as if the students needed to have a Hogsmeade weekend in order for Kai to abscond for a few hours. "Every weekend then?"

He would miss her that much for certain, Tally knew it. They really were going to have to adjust to this new circumstance, but she was all for being supportive. They'd make do. And she was so proud of him.

After last term, Calcifer's parents had FINALLY caved and decided a two way mirror was a good investment for their child's wellbeing. The fact that he hadn't been able to convince them of this earlier blew his mind, quite honestly. He was their ONLY child! He was precious to them! Yet they had only JUST NOW decided the mirror was a good idea? It was mind boggling.

The only question was - which one did he go with? He didn't need anything fancy, just something that could get the job done if he was in danger so he could talk to his parents. He eyed a small compact mirror set that looked like it might work...

Her summer had been off to a terrible start so far, but now that Irina was allowed out of the prison house, she headed to Diagon Alley to get some fresh air, some sun, and a couple school supplies. She planned on only getting a couple so that she'd have reason to MAKE her father allow her to come back again. She refused to let him ruin her entire summer.

That's why she ended up in this glass shop. She had heard that these two way mirrors were rather popular, and she decided she'd like one to communicate with certain people when she was on lockdown. Upon entering the shop, Irina was a bit lost. She wasn't familiar with Diagon Alley anyway, since she usually did her shopping in their own villages in Bulgaria. But she also didn't know what she was looking for...

She glanced over at the boy she ended up standing by, noticing him look at a small, compact mirror. How was she to tell if it was a two way mirror or just a... regular mirror? Irina cleared her throat. "Are these, er... normal mirrors or...?" she drifted off, assuming the boy would understand her question. Well, hopefully. She was struggling to remember the English word for the term she was looking for besides "magical".

Even though Calcifer looked up when she asked him her question, he didn't realize right away that she was talking to HIM. He looked behind him rather awkwardly and then, realizing she had actually asked HIM the question, turned back to her and blinked for a second. Uh...that was a weird question, because wasn't it obvious? Did she really think there was a normal mirror shop in the middle of the alley for...reasons? Even she seemed a little confused by her question, but he also detected a hint of an accent, so maybe that explained things.

He smiled at her and shook his head. "No, these are magical ones...the kind you use for communication, spying, all that stuff," he elaborated. He didn't really NEED to know why she was asking, but he hoped it wasn't for spying purposes. That made him so uneasy. Not that it was his business but...still.

Irina watched the boy expectantly, waiting for an answer, but he clearly was... confused. She raised her eyebrows impatiently as he looked behind himself as if he was looking for someone else she could have been talking to. But... there was no one else there. So either he was an idiot or she just caught him off guard.

He answered her question, though. "Spying?" she questioned immediately, her eyes returning to the mirrors. Spying... It was an interesting idea. Did people actually use those to spy? Wouldn't the other person notice if there was someone else lingering in their mirror? Anyway.

She would have thanked him for his answer, but... well, she didn't feel like it. Now she just needed to pick one out.

"Yeah...like, on your enemies and stuff," Calcifer explained, since she seemed a bit confused as to why someone would want a spy glass. Although, now that he had mentioned it - that sounded kind of like a good investment. After all, SOMEONE was clearly out to get them with this mist nonsense. Perhaps this wouldn't be such a bad thing to have around.

"This one helps you keep an eye on people who could be out to get you," he added to the girl, even though she hadn't asked. He pointed to one of the hand mirror Foe-Glasses and picked it up. "Might not be a bad idea, considering all that's been going on this year," he said, thinking out loud.

..... Irina knew what spying meant. She was foreign not stupid. "Yes, I know," she said with a mild amount of irritation. She was more interested in how the spying worked without the other person knowing they were being spied on. She had originally come to just find a two-way mirror, but this idea had distracted her.

When he spoke again, Irina looked over at him as he pointed to some glasses. Foe Glasses? Interesting. The more she looked at them, the more of a gimmick they seemed to be. She looked at the boy again with raised eyebrows, taking note of his mild sense of paranoia.

"If people want to come after me, I say let them," she said simply, her eyes returning to the section of two way mirrors. "The surprise is more fun."

Calcifer blinked at her in surprise. Was she serious? The SURPRISE was FUN? Um. No. No thank you. Surprises were not something Calcifer was a fan of. He didn't even enjoy surprise parties, let alone dark wizards who were out to get him for some reason.

"You and I have a very different definition of fun,"
he said with a small shrug. He eyed her again, trying to remember if he had seen her around Gryffindor tower last term. He was pretty sure he had, which meant she was either a lion like him, or a Slytherin who'd been forced in to his dorm. "I'm Calcifer," he added, introducing himself finally.

To any who would ask, the parents of Elias Inkwell would gush about how mature, how responsible, and how conscientious the 11-year-old boy was. It was this confidence in his perceived adultness, combined with their busy work schedules and, perhaps, their reluctance to be around hundreds of witches and wizards, which had led them to bestowing upon Elias the responsibility of purchasing his own school supplies. Handing over a bag of galleons that told the tale of how little they understood the pounds-to-galleons exchange rate, they’d set him loose on Diagon Alley with the fond instructions to “make good choices… but we know you will!”

And so here he was, in Janus Galloglass, where a mirror had just called him a handsome devil and asked whether it wouldn’t be grand for him to get such free and sincere compliments every day in the comfort of his own home.

"Just a quick stop, Mags, the wands will still be there!" Mr. Maunder held his son's hand as he drew them both inside the famed shop. "You can help me find something for mum, huh?"

Magdalas made a non-comittal 'hmm' as he glanced around at the reflective inventory and the scant few people basking in the praises they drawled. It was difficult for him to imagine what in particular people found so interesting about complimentary mirrors. Perhaps if they'd offered jokes or could make the viewer look like a monster or have a funny face, he could see the appeal.

"Remember, she likes the traditional style, so nothing too modern or minimalist, ok? Also, something with a Welsh accent, for some reason."

"Pa," Magdalas voiced, a bit fatigued that his shopping for school supplies had rapidly spun into a shopping trip for his father. "Why don't you just compliment ma at home yourself?"

"Well, I do!" He laughed. "But I want her to know she's beautiful while I'm at work, too! Oh - a compact, maybe..."

Magdalas sighed and began to wander away.

"Not too far, kid!" He froze at the sound of his old man's baritone. "Don't hold hands with anyone you don't know, ok?"

The warning came from an incident in his early childhood in which he had mistaken a random woman for his mother while out in the park one day. The woman had seen the mistake and promptly returned him to his parents, but it had traumatized them both to the very day. As such, some five years later, the warning was as familiar a gesture as 'gesundheit' for a sneeze.

He confirmed back to his father before noticing a youth around his age wandering unaccompanied near the back. It felt sort of thrilling to see someone like that alone and reminded Magdelas that soon, he'd be doing things alone too for the first time in forever. Casually, he stood beside him under the pretense of examining the same mirror, though was uncertain of how to actually engage with him beyond that.

Fortunately for Elias, and his parents' opinion of him, he had just enough financial awareness in his head to question the mirror as to how the compliments would be free, if he needed to buy the mirror to get them. While the mirror appeared to ponder this, another one called out, "My, aren't you intelligent! Come over here and let's talk about it some more!"

It was as he went to move to the new mirror that he realized there was someone standing beside him, and he turned to see the other kid there. He looked at him.

Oh! Oh, he was looking at him! Once again, lingering proximity with a like-aged person had proved an effective means of procuring a friend!

Is he shopping for his parents? He couldn't imagine any other reason why a kid would be looking in here, unless he was more nervous about the school year than he appeared and came to get a much-needed confidence boost to assure him of his future grades. Magdalas himself remained a touch weary of how he'd fare in some of the more hands-on courses, but assured himself regularly that everything would work out the way it needed to. Just like now!

"Hi, I'm Magdalas! I'm just shopping with my pa, but we're taking a break in here. And in the last four shops... But I'm sure we'll start getting stuff for me soon." He gave an optimistic grin. "You with your parents too?"
