It does make sense. Its interesting that, despite a lack of overt diversity within the books themselves, the community that it has spawned has so much diversity. When it comes to the fan involvement that you mentioned, which aspects do you find most appealing, creatively speaking?
I think the single most appealing thing that the HP fandom has formed is its reputation as "The Gateway Fandom". People start out with HP, much like I did, and then end up getting sucked into Percy Jackson, into Doctor Who. It's pretty cool.

But creatively speaking, my favourite thing is that Harry is about as observant as a doorknob, which means that all sorts of liberties can be taken! The Hogwarts Castle could be sentient, for example. It makes for some rather interesting fanfiction, to say the least.
