I haven't been here long by the average standard, in fact I'm only coming up upon my 2nd year anniversary the 14th, but...
Over the past 2 years or so, I've had time to notice a few very amazing rp techniques from the everyday creative individuals to grace this site. I've often tried to incorporate these techniques into my own skill set (though not always successfully, I admit) in hopes of providing a better experience for those that wish to share an rp moment with me.
I thought it might be nice if we opened a thread to discuss techniques that we've observed which we found successful & enjoyable.
I only have some requests: Please try to keep it positive and do not talk of thyne self. The purpose of this thread is to talk about things you've experienced that gave you new insight into how rp works. However, I must ask that you mention no members of SS by name to protect the integrity of our members and their rp skillz.
That said, one of my most favourite things I've experienced on the site's RPG is when a role-play writer will give you and your character something to react to. Sometimes it's something as small as a described gesture or an expression they're wearing or inner-monologue/dialogue, but it gives you a bearing from which you can react.
Feel free to add your personal favourites to this thread. <--random cherry for your thoughts. |

I love it when people take turns posting. Really. If you jump into an RP where there are 5 or so people already there, its only fair to let them have a chance to respond to what is going on. Mostly people that have been RPing for a while do that as a matter of course and it makes things flow better.
Likewise in a mass RP, I like when the posts aren't huge because it slows it down and realistically how much can one person think in the space of 20 seconds or whatever?

I really enjoy when people unexpectedly throw me curveballs. I know some don't, but I enjoy being surprised. Perhaps my favorite school scene so far (there have been tons of great ones!) was when Lowlow totally sprung a crazy Willie Crocker on me when Tibi said hi to him. It's definitely helped me give Tibi some more dimension.. I knew he'd been bullied in his old school, but having it happen on the train totally brought that out in his character and he'll definitely walk the halls a little differently. (And I never would have thought to arrange that experience for him).
Likewise, in the ministry RP, I was totally going play Silas a confirmed bachelor with some serious skeletons... but a a joke he made was responded to in a way completely other than he'd anticipated (I made an assumption about a character, not know their circumstances had changed) and the resulting hilarity has totally spun my entire direction for him to develop in.
Kinda like real life.

One of the first things that came to my mind was when people stretch out their words! I love that! Before I came to SnitchSeeker I had only seen it done with the word so, and it was such a surprise/delight to see it done with so many other words! It really adds feeling, you can tell what the person is saying with how they stretch out the word- you can just hear it being said, the sarcasm, the excitement, the fear- I just LOVE it!
I'm not sure if this is a technique as much as a style, but I think it's fabulous.
Anyway, to comment on what other people have said, I agree with everything that has been said- but shortness or length, description or dialogue, I love it all. It's like reading a book by many, many authors. The styles are so different- just like the people! It's great, and it adds so much dimension to the RP!

Hmm.... I like
1. Witty dialogue. I love it when conversation is exciting rather than just plain old 'Hi, how are you? How's class?'
2. IC internal thoughts. Primarily when it's funny. Serious musings are still ok. But funny internal struggles are... funny... for lack of better synonym.
3. Berty Borr. Always exciting.
4. Things with backstories. It's always fun to trace back plots and storylines.
That's all for now!

1. Professors who join in the fun. Seriously! The kind who hatch up pretty mini-plots for their lessons, and don't dock MASSIVE points because you have a bit of fun.
2. Funny thoughts. When the conversation is totally serious, but a certain character is thinking "Hey, my toe looks green." Stuff like that.
3. Posts that aren't too huge. I know I write huuuuge posts myself sometimes but, most of the time, I try not to. I understand there are times when they are necessary, but what's the point of a ten para post when the other person only said a single hi? That sort of thing drags down the RP.
4. Quick RP'ers. People who get back to you in time.

I love newbies that jump in and join in and really pick up what the SS RPG is all about! I loooove seeing them get all excited and ask questions and listen to the answers, read and follow the rules and genuinely get enjoyment out of their developing characters and taking part in the role play.

I loooove it when there's a little witty line here and there that your character can react to.
And, for that matter, I love it when the other character gives you something to react to. Especially when it's a facial expression or a motion or something. That way it's not just a standard conversation and it becomes really interesting and fun.
I love surprises! Just random things that happen that neither RPer planned for
I love it when people have their character's life stories really well planned out before they RP so that things that happen and how their character reacts is because of their past experiences.

Although I have just begun I can say I appreciate bold text, the way several people will join in on your conversation with others making it a larger RP, when people follow the Harry Potter storyline, when people mention things of the SS storyline, when people keep the wizarding world and their characters actions in it very accurate. Just makes everything more believable. And for me, because I'm still getting the feel of it, reading of past events makes me understand what is going on around me.

I love.... a lot of things about the SS!RPG but here are a few generalities about some of my favorite writers and roleplayers.
I love.... 1. The idea of this thread.
2. Short paragraphs that make it easy to read and reply quickly; OR 3. Bolded speech in the middle of a long paragraph. (It is just easier on my eyes and my brain. I'm sorry that instant gratification has gotten to me and my attention span is shot. You all are still great writers. )
4. Good grammar (or an effort to have good grammar and spelling! It really shows!).
5. Comedy.
6. Mystery.
7. Writers who are willing to adapt, try something new and be a bit of a chameleon depending on the situation. You don't have to sacrifice your character at all, but flexibility in interesting situations to work with the action more is a trait I really do admire. And I've found that the most hilarious situations are ones that have the least planning involved.

i think its cool how sometimes people acccidentally interupt a conversation, therefore having to make something up. like once i made my charrie fall into the lake so she'd have to change clothes. its cool cuz then you meet new people.

So yesh, as people have said, great thread idea. As I'm reading through all this I'm really taking in what people are saying and I'm storing it all in my brain to use in my next RP post, because there are really great ideas here and they can all help me be a better Rper and be more considerate of others. I know I sometimes stuggle with one line RPers and end up staring at the screen not knowing what to post. I mean what do you do when you start up an RP and the other person only says things like, "Yeah, that's right." or "No, not really." in about two lines of post? I can't work with that. The whole RP just ends up being my charrie asking the other person everyday polite questions and having the other person's charrie answer them. Not really a stimulating RP.
So yes, I love it when I come back to a thread where I've posted and find that the other person has left me a long post with lots to work with. Makes me very happy. And I looove the bolded dialogue, I myself do it, as you can see. There have been times lately when I forget to, but I always go back and change it, hopefully before the other person has gotten a chance to read it because I know it's hard when someone's got a lengthy post and no bolded text.
I mean, I always double and triple check every post I make to see if it flows well and if I need to add anything so you'd pretty much see, 'Last edited by AlexandraRamos' beneath every one of my posts.
I also love the very outgoing characters that do the craziest things, so much so that I made one myself, and am very excited to add him to the school RP. See what rukus he causes.
But mostly I like it when people (mostly newbies) actually take the time to learn and enjoy being a better RPer and show vast signs of improvement. Makes me smile.

What do I love?
1. I love descriptive posts, they don't have to be long. I know that I can post one paragraph posts, but if I'm RPing in the KA sections with lots of other amazing RPer's, I can post some 6/7 paragraphs without even trying. I know that I have been through some threads where it just becomes common place; however it does slow the RP down; simply because you loose the time to actually reply.
2. I love posts where the Poster has obviously tried with the grammer and the spelling. My first language is english, but I am not perfect with spelling; however I try and people understand, and apreciate it when we try.
3. Creativity and innovation in the background, personality and looks of characters that allow for diversity and amazing plots.
4. Talking. There is so much you can do with your characters if you spot an amazing RPer and then send them a message with an idea. I have done this loads, or simply "fumbled" upon them, such as Steven last term just happening to meet a few girls *cough* out by the lake. They fell over his feet and madness ensued.

I love RANDOMNESS. Who doesn't? And I especially like it when people actually play along, and not just stare at the character. It spoils the fun D:. But that, of course, depends. ^___^
I also love the way people make short replies to long posts. It's sort of a skill, to me. It's like, you don't have to give out so much detail, but in a few words be able to send out a substantial message. And I still believe long posts never hurt, as long as it's only between two people .

I have seen people who have been like filthy rich, but still have their problems, or are actually really nice. Then again i have seen people who are really rich and are rude to people, but they way they've portrayed it is brilliant. I don't like it when people's characters are perfect. I also have seen people start their chracters at 11 years old, and hate girls/boys and then it slowly unfolds as the char gets older. But i like it as well (and ive seen it) when the young girls are drooling over the older guys/girls, but secretly are scared of dating. Or seeing a young boy act all macho but inside be scared because it happens in real life.
I haven`t had much experience on snitchseeker, i have only been RPing since august, but I love my chracter, even though she is based on me (because i find it easy to describe myself and how i would react) I still keep her not like me... if that makes sense. Like I`m not clumsy (well not really) but my chracter will walk into poles more often then walk by them, I`m not amazing at school but my character is, BUT I am great at math but my chracter is merely average, but she works hard at it. My character is rich but she doesnt flaunt it arrogantly, and she likes to have fun and isn`t to serious. (I know you said not to talk about ourselves and our styles but it might help some people out, or help us with the feed back)

I love a lot of things.
1.) The characters. Each term there's new characters. Great and not so great, they all add something to the RP.
2.) The surprises. The plots, character reactions, unexpected results from a post...
3.) The professors. When I first joined I stayed away from the teachers entirely. But I soon realized they're as fun, and sometimes more fun, than the students.
4.) The freedom. Imaginations run wild here. And they can - we have magic and creatures and everything in the Harry Potter universe (which is a lot!).
5.) The graphics. I know that's not strictly the RP, but I am in love with all the amazing siggies and avvies and profile pics I see going around. The RP related ones are often the most fun. All of the graphic makers here on SS are spectacular! Of course, all my loves are based on reading the RP, since I do that more than I post.

I like it when characters aren't friendly all the time. It's more realistic that you will eventually come across a grumpy fellow who doesn't like you instead of everyone wanting to be your five-second friend. At least have some negative thoughts! I know I personally don't always say what I'm thinking.
I understand that no one wants to start any wars, but that doesn't mean people should confine themselves to being bland and 'nice' all the time. That is what most middle-aged women are like at business parties and we do NOT want to venture there yet.

I feel like this thread needs a revival or at least a gander through by those of you who haven't discovered it yet.
SO.
I love seeing new charries stick around, develop and grow, and make it to the end of the term ready to start all over again as second years.
I love (and am flattered) that other people aside from the RPers themselves will miss the graduating students.
I love that no two terms are alike and I love it when the reason its different is because the RPers pick up whatever story is going on, run with it and make it their own.

I love people who know how to RP Mary Sues and Gary Stus - believe me, that's a skill not everyone has. |

I love:
How people bold their speech. It makes it much easier to find the important stuff if it's a big paragraph.
How the teachers make there teaching easy to jump in on. Sometimes I find that I can be on for only short snippits of time for classes. Normally I find it easy to jump back in on what to do.
How the teachers make their homework understandable for people who were and and who weren't in the class.

I love seeing how others role-play, everyone has a different way of role-playing. It's like no giraffe has the same pattern as another giraffe, no two role-players write the same way. I love to see the differences in people's writing that I role-play with, and I try to take mental notes in my brain to try to apply to my own writing.

I love...
1. Bolded speech. It makes a post easier to read.
2. Characters that have flaws that make them interesting.
3. Confusion. I think it's awesome when a character doesn't always know what's going on and just kind of... plays along anyway.
4. Good spelling and grammar (or at least an obvious effort to have good spelling and grammar).
5. Back-stories. I think it's cool how the RP has a history behind it, and every individual character does too.
6. Drama. It's fun to stalk.
7. Posts with substance. I like it when there's something you can respond to. I've seen people post huge descriptive posts, talking about what their character is thinking (And I've been really bad about it in the past.), but all they give you to reply to is "Hi." or "Sup'?".
8. When I read a post and literally can't stop smiling or laughing. We've got a bunch of comedic geniuses on here.
9. That everyone is welcome. I love that when I was a total n00b with RPing people played with me anyway and made it easier to get better. |

I love... 1) Neat posts; grammar, punctuation, and easy 'formal' words. It makes it easy to me to understand and reply. 2)When a character has a conflict within as how to react and then does something totally weird. It's exciting. 3) When Professors are involved and play along with others no matter what the 'plot' is. 4) I really appreciate certain people who RP with beginners (like myself) and push you to think about what to reply and give you some of their experience. It's awesome.
