Default Canon Characters

It's something the staff has to deal with every term... people who want to RP as a canon character or the immediate offspring of a canon character. Aside from the fact that canon characters are DEFINITELY no longer around during our timeline and their children and grandchildren probably aren't either, there are other issues to consider:

* How do you deal with 2, 3, 4, etc. people who say they're all related independently to the Weasleys or some other character? We might not have this issue at this moment, but we've had situations in the past (pre-HBP), where we had one person the great-granddaughter of Harry Potter and one person, and someone else was the granddaughter of HP and someone else entirely.

* Is it fair to make most of the people create a character from scratch and let a select few capitalize on canon characters or should only non-canon characters and character offspring be allowed?

* If we let people be related to canon characters, how do we regulate it? How do we decide who gets to be related to Harry or Hermione or Neville? If someone is ALREADY related to them, do we care if someone else says they are too? What do we do if someone insists they're the great-grandchild of Harry and Hermione, when that is clearly not canon?

I'm sure there are other issues connected to the use of canon characters in the RP, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on them. Do you like RPing as or with someone who has a canon connection, or does it bother you? What should the solution be in your opinion? What other issues does this raise?

Hogwarts RPG Name:

Superfan of: Minerva, Severus, Albus, Hermione <3 Travelling/ History geek/ TV show addict

Interesting topic! The truth is I am happy I gave my charrie a canon last name because the link between her and the HP storyline makes me more eager to RP! However, Griselda Marchbanks was only mentioned in the books, so I could still make up an original backstory which doesn't conflict with anything Jo wrote. And I have yet to meet any other Marchbanks in the school RPG.

On the other hand, I would never use Weasley, Potter or Malfoy as a last name, simply because those families have been described in detail in the books and any new character should comply with the existing family history. Plus, as underlined by people before me, it would be very difficult to keep track of all the relatives your character supposedly has in the school RPG. No need to complicate ourselves, I'd prefer an original character with an unherd-of name to a Weasley any day.

I would never consider creating a character directly related to a canon outside of fanfiction, but my first character Ponessa (Who was recently seen at the DH memorial) is/was distantly related to Snape. I've seen a lot of people want to be descendants of snape, but fail to see that just because you are related to someone does NOT mean you are just like them. Even so, Ponessa was SO distantly related, she didn't even recall what side of the family he had been on.

I don't find there's MUCH harm in being related, but if someone is claiming to be the daughter/son of a canon character, I, myself, will ignore them completely. I DON'T even know how to deal with that.
