It's nice to see Johnny Depp out of the disguises he's often covered with in movies in the past decade or so, but a bit difficult to find him believable as this tech genius in
Transcendence. Not that he's a bad actor, but it just seems far-fetched for someone who portrayed Jack Sparrow and such a renegade in real life to come across as convincing. Maybe his real-life personal tainted him in some ways, but he''s not at all believable in this role.
Transcendence itself was an interesting warning of what could happen if everyone allows technology and the Internet to take up their lives, but the execution of this idea was poorly expressed. Sure, one can blame it on tech-type mumbo-jumbo that it works, sure it does. But this is a movie where you leave your beliefs behind, especially those who are religious, as it does get a bit sanctimonious by the end.
The other performances, including Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman, were decent enough, but would have been better suited in an actual good movie. It definitely has no repeat value - once was more than enough. If you're a fan of the actors, then go ahead and watch it (it's nice to see Depp looking like himself for once, and not in all the ridiculous costumes Tim Burton makes him wear).
Transcendence is in theaters now.
