A stellar script, fantastic acting and immersive 3-D make Ant-Man one of the greatest films of the year. Situated in the Marvel universe, the story introduces us to a new breed of hero. Scott Lang, a cat burglar, unsure of how to take control of his future, is offered the opportunity to take on the mantel of the Ant-Man. Aside from controlling various species of ants, the Ant-Man suit also grants the wearer the ability to shrink to minute size and back again at will - traits that make the Ant-Man a formidable foe. Lang, unable to control his own life, is thrust into a world of deceit and betrayal that shapes his personal circumstances and pits him against a megalomaniac villain, Yellow Jacket.
With global hits such as Guardians of the Galaxy under its belt, Marvel had set the bar high. Galaxy’s script was full of witty banter, punctuated by solemn moments of character development. For many fans, it was the best film Marvel had made to date. With Ant-Man, however, that bar is raised yet again. Packed from start to finish with laugh-out-loud moments, the brilliantly paced scripting allows the audience a glimpse into the life of a more average superhero - a guy that everyone is able to relate to. As such, the film does not appear as staged as many other Marvel installments. Instead of presenting a jerky introduction into an already packed universe, the film offers a glance at some of the smaller events taking place, and succeeds in providing a human element to them.
As a result of the glorious cinematography, this film should be seen in 3-D to be fully appreciated. The director noted that his intention was to carry the audience with Ant-Man as he shrinks and explores the new world around him. Unlike many other attempts at 3-D, this effect is pulled off perfectly. The world at minute levels appears as real as any other. Whether on a table, in a drain pipe or underground, the effect is flawless. You feel as small as an ant.
Lastly, for those hard-core Marvel fans, there is good news. The traditional cameos, interfilm references and universe tie-ins have continued. With some subtle, and other not so subtle references, it becomes clear that Ant-Man has a part to play in the broader storyline of the Marvel universe. Similarly, Marvel has continued its traditional mid- and post-credit scenes. Both are important in forming a basis for upcoming events. The first will leave comic fans delighted, while the second is likely to excite all who have watched the films from their inception.
Overall Ant-Man is a fabulous film with a director who understands comedic timing, the importance of backstory and the establishment of believable personalities. We believe it will stand as an important pillar in the Marvel storyline.
