Default Review: Disney's Cinderella

Review by Darrin

Flash Review: If you’re a Disney lover, you’ll love "Cinderella." Even if you’re not, you’ll probably like it. Nice family movie, too.

If you’re looking for a new take on the old story, along the lines of Wicked or “Maleficent,” you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re after a strong re-telling of the classic “Cinderella” tale, you’re in for a treat. Director Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter’s Gilderoy Lockhart) does a wonderful job of adding nuance and current themes to this much-loved fairy tale in a beautifully filmed live-action version.

While I felt some of the performances were a bit heavy-handed in places, this may have been an attempt to keep some of the feel of the original animated film. If so, it was perhaps a bit too successful. Still, the deeper look at the characters more than made up for any initial concerns.

In particular I loved the strength of Lily James’ Cinderella, and Richard Madden’s Prince Charming was exceptionally well-done, with a great deal of depth shown, especially in his relationship with the king, portrayed by veteran Derek Jacobi. Helen Bonham Carter adds a genuinely quirky twist to the Fairy Godmother, with more than a touch of her Bellatrix Lestrange showing through. And Kate Blanchett’s evil stepmother Lady Tremaine is truly remarkable. Writers Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz skillfully offer a peek at what drives the character’s cruelty, but make it clear this is no excuse for her behavior.

Disney’s Cinderella was a worthy and welcome update to the 1950 original, perhaps much overdue.

My final take (Full Price vs Matinee vs Wait & Rent vs Skip It) — Full Price. (Particularly if you’re a Disney fan or appreciate a nice movie the family can enjoy together.)

Cinderella opens Friday, March 13.
