Next to the counter, stands a tall pedestal. On it is a very ancient book: a grimoire or a black book of potions. It was put there by the former shopkeeper, Abraham, who has dedicated his life to sharing knowledge. The book is made of strong, dark brown leather. A simple silver fastener is attached the side of the book to keep the book firmly closed; but not locked. In order to ensure that no one would destroy or steal, a series of spells were put upon it. Everyone is welcome to consult it. No customer should expect anything from within it.
If a customer opens it, he or she will notice that everything has been handwritten. Abraham had taken a great deal of time putting this together and each subsequent shopkeeper including Nigel has painstakenly taking care to continue the tradition. Feel free to chat about what you read and take some notes.

She was in a wonderful mood lately, and it seemed only fair to let her daughter make some decisions for once... after all, she may not get the chance for very long... not if she was going to have a little brother or sister. But best not get ahead of things, Aurora reminded herself, she wasn't sure of anything yet. She let herself hope though...
With a firm hold of Felicity's hand, Rora walked into Slug and Jiggers, scanning the shelves for what she was looking for. It was only a couple of basic things she needed, but it'd be good to get them out of the way quickly...
But then she saw... someone. A familiar someone. Or so she thought... it'd been so long that she doubted herself for a second. "Mordred?" Aurora walked up to the figure, standing over the grimoire, and tapped him gently on the shoulder. Felicity, as usual, was not impressed by the whole meeting-people thing, and had tucked herself behind one of Aurora's head, her little grey-blue eyes peeking out at the man.
If cat’s poop can be in muggle coffee, then why can’t dragon dung be a part of it too? Mordred was getting frustrated with the thought that he just might let go of his brilliant idea. He was more than ready to declare his research a fail. Tapping the open book with his index finger, the dragonologist looked out of the shop’s window and wondered if Sophie can help him out? Or maybe she knew anyone in A&C who can help him out?
His thoughts were broken when he felt a light tap on his shoulder. “Yes?” Mordred turned around and was now face to face with an old friend. “Rora...” the former smiled at the woman, and gave her a proper hug. Yes, he still isn’t comfortable with hugs, but it was Aurora. She’s one of the many exceptions. “It’s been a while...” the last time he saw her was during his wedding. Yes.
The man then turned to the little human being who was hiding behind Aurora. “She’s...grown.” HOW did Aurora do it? See, Mordred got this little phobia with babies and children. The fact that he can contribute in bringing a tiny human being into the world scares him. He’s taken care of newborn dragons alright, and he was really impatient with it. If he can’t take care of a baby creature, he was sure he won’t be any better if it was his own child.

All thoughts of potions ingredients forgotten, Aurora hugged her old friend back, a huge smile on her face. It really had been a while: Rora had been so busy, and she assumed Mordred had too. But that didn't matter, that was just how life worked. "It really has... how are you? How's married life?" Was he enjoying it? Aurora hoped so. She loved being married.
Grown? Aurora chuckled softly and bent to pick up the almost-four-year-old, who had tried to retreat further behind her legs when Mordred had looked at her. "Yes, children tend to do that." she teased, balancing her daughter on her hip. It wasn't going to be long before she couldn't do that anymore... after all, Aurora was pretty tiny and Felicty seemed to have inherited Richard's tall genes. "Say hello, Felicity. This is mummy's old friend, Mordred. Alter freund." Sometimes translating things seemed to put Felicity at ease... Aurora still wasn't sure why...
Felicity, however, was staring at the man through her blonde curls, her big blue-grey eyes fixed directly on his face. She held this look for a second, then raised one hand like a tiny wave. "Hello." she said quietly, her other hand curled around the fabric of Aurora's jacket. Felicity didn't like strangers. To be honest, she didn't much like people, but she didn't really know that many. It worried Aurora that she was so against making friends, but at least they seemed to be making progress lately...

Mordred had his grin plastered on his face as he released Aurora from his hug. It was always great to see old friends back in a place where they used to see each other often. Though he failed to spend time with Aurora during his later years in Hogwarts, it seems that nothing has changed between them. The level of comfort he shared with her stayed the same.
The dragonologist tilted his head, as his grin grew into a tiny smile. Married life? “I am. I never thought I’d get married, so yes, I am enjoying it really.” And taking everything one step at a time. “How are you and Richard?” Does...the guy still see him as a threat? Hopefully not anymore because he’s no longer single.
And...Merlin. Children. Again.
Just the other day, he braved the Ministry’s Daycare to get a feel of...being a parent. The idea of having his own child scares him, but he couldn’t hide forever because one day, Sophie will ask for one. Mordred just kept on staring at the child, and he, subconsciously broke into a friendly smile and gave Aurora’s daughter a tiny wave as well. “You’re a big girl now, Felicity.” Well, stating the obvious apparently, but...yeah, he’s got to start interacting with talking...tiny human beings for a start.

The book that was stashed within this shop had of course fascinated young Rachel Watson. She had noticed it on her very first trip here but never had gotten the chance to examine it. Today was different for the soon-to-be fourth year immediately made her way towards it upon entering the shop. Yes, she did have to get quite a few Potion supplies but she would get to those later.
Clad in a knee length rose pink dress, the brown haired girl stared at the book. Surely it would have some tips that would help her enhance her knowledge of potion making. She was already getting better at it, having taken Austin's advice and treating each potion she brewed as though it were a recipe for cooking or baking.
Rachel unattached the fastener, reading to engross herself in the reading to come.

Well she had absolutely no idea where she was. All she had been given was a piece of paper with a list of things she needed to buy from her Mum. She had managed to bump into a group of guys that seemed to find it very entertaining at her current state of distress, all donning extremely thin matching hoodies?! - how on the earth they could wear so little clothing when it was so freaking cold outside was beyond her! She was wrapped up in the thickest coat she had brought over from back home which in actual fact was useless. Coats in Arizona were unheard off.
So here she was, completely out of her depth, froze like a popsicle, confused and feeling rather miserable trying to find books she would need for the first term at her new school, Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She spotted a girl - she was guessing her age - appearing to be highly mesmerised with the book she was burying her face in. Riz tamped down her embarrassment and made her way over to the girl - whilst glancing around hoping she wasn't drawing too much attention to herself.
"Uh-..Excuse me? I'm so sorry, but I have absolutely no idea where I am - or even if I'm in the right place to find what I need.. " she sheepishly said, her accent thick from nerves.

Rachel fished into her pink back to retrieve a flowery -and, yes, pink notepad- so that she could make some notes. Ever since she had been improving on Potion brewing, she had been motivated more than ever to continue doing so. Pencil- decorated with the snowman Olaf- in hand, she carefully turned the pages to look for anything that would be helpful.
She had actually started to jot down a few things on the Anti- Aging Potion when she became aware of a voice beside her. The freckly girl looked around with a smile, not minding being interrupted at all. "Hello, there. You're actually standing in Slugs and Jiggers apothecary. Where is it that you need to be exactly?'' She had barely managed to understand through the accent.

Riz caught the flowery and pink notepad that had been plucked out of her bag and she couldn't help but smile to herself. If only she could see her room back home. Replace the pink with yellows and blues and it looked a lot like it. The thought brought her back to the realisation that she definitely wasn't in Kansa anymore!
"I am?.. I must have missed that when I had walked in..I think it was the high ceilings that kinda threw me you know.. doesn't look so big from outside but then you walk in and its like woooaaah! you know.. yeahhh" she laughs nervously, and then looks at the girl and mentally slaps herself. "Man.. I'm sorry, I'm so nervous - I'm rambling I know.." she finishes and then closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and starts again.
"I'm Arizona .. I'm transferring to Hogwarts this year" she grins at the girl, accent not so strong.

Rambling was exactly Rachel's thoughts as to what this girl was doing. But as someone who preferred to listen as opposed talking, she didn't mind. Instead, her smile grew wider as she listened to the girl. "Oh, I quite understand. I am thinking this is your first time in Diagon Alley then? On my first trip here, I was quite confused myself.'' She remembered it as though it were only yesterday.
"It's quite alright. I don't mind listening.'' Rachel did her fair share of this everyday. "Welcome to Great Britain then! You'll absoloutely love Hogwarts. May I ask which school you attended before?'' Examining the potion book was now something she quite forgot to do. "My name is Rachel. It's quite lovely to meet you, Arizona.''

The reassuring smile that appeared on the girls face within minutes eased Riz significantly, she realised she could breathe just a little bit better and her shoulders automatically relaxed. Riz took a few deep breaths and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, this is my first time - was it the pure look of panic on my face or the rambling that gave it away?" Riz laughed. This girl had an air of calmness that seemed to sooth Riz and her state discomfort.
"That's actually really nice of you.. thank you!" she grinned at the girl. "Man, I was actually really nervous about meeting people - meeting anyone in fact - I'm actually rather chatty but I don't know, I think the whole move has just shifted me on my axis and I'm a bit disorientated.. you know what I mean?" Riz waved her hair as the spoke, being a very animated - as always. "I went to Ilvermorny, in Massachusetts?" she explained.
"Well Rachel.. pleasure is all mine" she grinned at her freckled faced saving grace.

Rachel giggled. She already liked this girl. She was so chatty and Rach was somewhat reminded of Haddie. "Both, actually. I believe I had the exact look on my face. I had wandered away from my daddy but luckily he found me a few minutes later.''
The freckled face girl listened then nodded. "You're welcome. I must say you'll adjust soon enough and I can help if you like. Since I haven't gotten most of my Hogwarts supplies for the new year as yet, we can get ours together. If you like, that is.'' Ilvermorny? How exciting! "What was it like there? I am quite sure you've already learnt a lot already.''
"What year will you be in? I'll need to know that before we get your supplies.''

Riz sighed with relief. She needed help navigating herself around this very confusing place if she had any hopes of actually getting her books ready to start in the new term. With Rachel's help, what would have taken her 3 days will probably take her many 2 hours. She grinned at the girl, "I really hope so, everything is so unfamiliar right now, its all a bit overwhelming" she laughed off. "It was.. school I guess.. " she laughed, she didn't really know any better so to everyone else it must be intriguing. "Its nice and warm though.. unlike England" she laughed. She hugged her coat tighter to her body in hopes of containing some heat.
"I will be starting in my 4th year.. and I will be in ..Hufflepuff..did I say that right?" she asked Rachel.

Rachel could see the relief on Arizona's face. It was hard to miss and she reasoned it was because that was once her expression when she had gotten lost too. She was only too happy to assist. The girl giggled. "Say no more.'' Her eyebrows were lifted just the tiniest bit. "But it's summer. Are you sure it's just not you feeling a chill?'' Was Arizona okay? Did she have a fever or something of the sort?
"I think you mean you're hoping to be in Hufflepuff, is that correct? I'm a Ravenclaw but we'll both be fourth years!'' How thrilling! "We can actually begin our shopping right in this shop. We can get all of our potions supplies.''
Rach <3 - I just kinda went with it! Hope its okay!!

Arizona grinned at the girl. She shook her head, "You know, this kind of temperature is something I'm not too familiar with - summer back in Phoenix is nothing like summer in England. In winter, the highest temperature you're looking at is at least 22 to 24'c maximum. Either that.. or maybe the move is beginning to takes it toll more than I realised" she said frowning a little, feeling her forehead and shrugging. It had been a rollercoaster few weeks with the move and that. She just hoped she would be okay for the first day of term.
"You know.. I knew there was a reason I liked you.. you seem to be able to make sense of my nonsense" she laughed. "Ravenclaw.. wow.. sounds exciting.. " she repeated the name in her head again. "I'm kinda thanking my lucky stars that it was you I did in fact ask now, at least I will know someone in my year!" the thought did rouse excitement within her. Maybe this year wasn't going to be bad after all. She had made her first friend, and a lovely one at that.

Rachel had never experienced any other temperatures besides Great Britain's (thought that would change in a few weeks when she went to California with Haddie) so she couldn't really put herself in Arizona's shoes to get a fell about this entire temperature situation. "You'll get used to the way things are here, don't you worry, Arizona. I just hope you adjust quickly.'' At least there didn't seem to be any fever.
The soon-to-be fourth year giggled. "Why, thank you! I know there was a reason too, you chatter a lot and you're fun to talk to.'' She secretly hoped that Arizona would be Sorted into Ravenclaw but it didn't matter much. The two would still be friends. "Yes! I'll show you around Hogwarts and tell you everything that you need to know. There are quite a few places to explore. It's going to be exciting!''
Levi had spent the most part of his first day quietly following after Mr. Garrettson, taking notes and smiling at customers if needed. He'd tried to be as unobtrusive as possible, by making himself invisible--but there was something to be said about the many, many items that had caught the boy's attention until he'd been unable to hold in the curiosity and fired several questions at the shopkeeper.
After which he'd realized he failed at the whole unobtrusive business and had chosen to wander off, in slight embarrassment. He came face to face with a book that looked particularly intriguing, but he restrained himself.

For now.
Was he ALLOWED to touch it?
Nigel admittedly hadn't known what to expect when he had accepted the young man as an intern and shadow. Previous attempts at being nice and open to the aspiring potioneer had, more often than not, led to a summer he'd rather not repeat. Yet Elinor had worked to convince him to give it another shot and he had eventually caved. And thus Mr. Levi Kenning had made his appearance at the shop this morning in between busy rushes of the day. The shopkeeper doing his best to not be bothered by questions and curiousities while he went about the business of keeping shelves stocked and customers happy.
During one particular stint at the counter, the former Ravenclaw noticed he had lost his tail but hadn't thought much of it until he was once more through the small line of customers. Had he given up? Gone home? Went to hide somewhere? Nigel eventually went to look for his change only to find the younger man staring, almost in awe, at the grimoire. "It's interesting how some people complete ignore or miss the book and others are seemingly drawn to it."

Not like it was hidden or out of the way.
Levi looked over his shoulder, distractedly, briefly unsure for just a second of who had addressed him. Then he remembered, and re-arranged his expression into something he hoped was professionalism. Whatever professionalism was supposed to look like, anyway. His only previous job experience was at his father's restaurant and that was largely only washing dishes the good old muggle way.
Not that he disliked manual labor, mind. There was something particularly relaxing about it in how repetitive and mind numbing it could be. Also, very humbling.
"That makes no sense to me, personally." The boy said, plainly, turning around. He had no interest on pursuing a career as a potioneer but potions were vital to healers. Not everything could be solved with a spell, after all. "But I suppose we're all meant to have different inclinations and whatnot." He reached up to scratch his beardless chin. "How often do you add to the book, Mr. Garrettson?"

If Nigel noticed any real change in carraiage, the shopkeeper made no comment or reaction to it. So far the young man hadn't behaved in the manner of his...failures...so all was good at the present moment in time. "Indeed..." he remarked with a nod of his head in agreement. He was pretty sure his step-brother wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near potions brewing...or anything remotely menial like his step-father before him. Loftier goals were theirs. And there were others who relied on their knowledge of charms and spells to be their predilition in life.
"Oh...a few times during the year, give or take," he answered after thinking about it. "Depends what I've come up with or found...or anything changes that need to be made over time." Brewing and experimenting was still very much a passion of his between owning and running the shop and more personal matters. "Though most of the entries are not my own...the grimoire actually contains potions recipes from all the previous owners of Slug and Jiggers as well." Which was why he was careful of the protections on the books to keep it free from mutants and the like.
If Nigel noticed any real change in carraiage, the shopkeeper made no comment or reaction to it. Levi shifted his weight from one foot to another, and reached up to scratch the back of his head. He supposed it did make sense, how infrequently potions were added to the book; adding your every day potions to it would have probably defeated the purpose of the book entirely. Which made the boy significantly more interested on what it had to offer.
"So, what you're saying is that they are all one of a kind," the boy pointed out, wondering if it would be okay if he reached out for his journal and took notes. "Which, mind you, all potions are, of course; but these specifically are one of a kind given how particular they are. Right?" And would he be allowed to comb through it?

Nigel couldn’t tell at first what his intern’s opinion on the matter was, his behavior before him giving mixed signals. Not to mention he hadn’t the time to study the younger man’s mannerisms. But the former Ravenclaw was certainly curious to see what developed from the aspiring healer. Surely with that dream, one should appreciate the science.
“They certainly are,” Nigel confirmed with a nod, “the handiwork of some of the talented potioners in Britain.” It wasn’t like the shop had ever really been sold to anyone who didn’t pass the approval of the previous shopkeeper. There were standards to keep after all, what with a name as trusted and well-known as Slug and Jiggers. "Something to share with those that come after."

"So, it's like a legacy of sorts. Handed down from Potioneer to Potioneer."
Cool.
Levi knew a thing or two about legacies, or he rather liked to think he did. Which was unfortunate because so far, he'd certainly failed his parents'; no Quidditch skills whatsoever to follow in his mother's footsteps, no entrepreneur ones to follow in his father's. Or his father's knack for interior design, for that matter; his own had four white walls, a bed, clothes strewn all over the place and a million of books.
Well, he wished it was a million books, but the point still stood. Which was that there was possibly not a single touch of personality to his room. It was what it was.
He pocketed his hands. "Do you think I'll get to watch you add in some new entries, Mr. Garrettson?" Or help him brew something that'd eventually get added to the grimoire? Levi was all about the hands on work.

Potions used to be one of Noelle's WORST classes. She hated going because who really liked going to things you weren't good at? But over the years, and plenty of practice, it was one of the classes she actually enjoyed now.
So today, in her adventure in DA, she went into Slug and Jiggers to get a few items for her class. She was in a bit of a better mood than her last trip to DA. James had been found. It made a huge difference. Not that her mood was 100%. She still had a lot on her mind, mostly her family.
Today, she'd pushed it aside to enjoy herself a bit.
Heading into the shop, a book caught her eye. One she'd seen before but hadn't really paid much attention to. Since she had time, she went closer to it and grew more interested. A book that seemed to have been passed down from potioneer to potioneer.
Noelle gently took the book cover and opened it up slightly. She had no idea if she was supposed to be touching the book, but no going back now. Curiosity had taken over.

Dora had always excelled at Potions thanks to the tutelage of her Potions Mistress cousin. Not that she bragged or showed off about it. Hell, often times she didn't even attend her potions lessons because she found them boring and an utter waste of time. Ugh.
But whatever.
The blonde girl was here for a reason today... to get some extra ingredients before she headed down to Knockturn for a visit. Usually stopping to read the Grimoire...
Oh.
Noelle was there.
AWKWARD. The pair of Gryffindors had not so much as exchanged a single pleasantry in a couple of years now, really. Sad how people grew apart and even sadder when "friends" abandoned one another. But that was neither here nor there, really. Standing quietly behind the other girl, Dora waited patiently for her turn to scour the pages she so desperately wanted to view. Maybe some light foot tapping was happening... or a quiet sigh.

Whatever.
Page after page, Noelle turned them delicately as she scoured the book that was in front of her. It had started out innocently enough. Just a little peek. But now, Noelle was turning the pages looking at each page with excitement. Who knew potion books could be so .... entertaining.
She didn't know how long she'd been there standing and reading until she was brought back into the real world with a foot tapping and a sigh. Merlin... it was the shopkeeper wasn't it?
Noelle slowly and quietly closed the book before looking over her shoulder and seeing....
Dora?
"Oh, you're not the shopkeeper." She said letting out a breath of relief and giving outa relieved smile despite the two having not talked for the past two years. "I'm guessing you're wanting to use the book?" She asked, stepping aside slightly. "It's a fascinating piece of parchment." Or whatever that book was made of.

"Clearly." What an astute observation the other girl had made... it nearly caused Dora to roll her eyes, but she did indeed keep that at bay. Barely. "Not use, no. Read, yes. And it is not illegal to touch it, you know." I mean... obviously she did not know, else she wouldn't have let out that sigh.
"Yeah it is. I have seen it a million times," she responded as she moved past Noelle and started to look at the book. Was their conversation over now? I mean... probably, right?
