Default Magical Menagerie

Welcome to the Magical Menagerie! It truly is your one stop shop for all your creature-related needs (except for owls). As you enter the shop the sounds of creatures fills your ears though they may not be in sight right away. It seems the shop has had some work done to it recently. Right up front there is a large oak counter, a shiny new register sitting off to one side. On the wall just behind the counter are seven colored pegs each one holding a clipboard filled with paperwork. This is how the shopkeeper keeps special orders and requests.

Beyond the counter is the display area. Rows upon rows of anything you might need for your new pet or that pet you already have at home that deserves some pampering! From all big to small tanks, training crates and travel bags, all types of foods and treats from the young to the older, we even have foods for sensitive bellies! Climbing posts, chew toys, balls that jingle and ones that flash colors, squeaky mice too. There’s shampoos and medicine’s of all sorts as well. Collars and leashes of all styles and sizes, some with matching shirts, coats and booties! If a comfy bed is what you need we have those as well. Don’t see something you’re looking for? Come right up to our shopkeeper and ask we might just have it and if by some chance we don’t, well than we can order it for you!

Past the display are the Menagerie is broken up into smaller, creature-themed rooms; a zoo within a shop, if you will. Each room is decorated to make the creatures feel more at home, from a change in lighting, large murals painted on the walls and flowers and plants scattered about. The room dedicated to Reptiles and Amphibians is first, while the room for smaller animals comes next. Right after that is a room sanctioned for our Aviation friends; birds of all shapes and sizes reside here, please note that it can get a bit loud and messy in here at times. In following room is home to many large fish tanks containing fresh-water fish, salt-water fish and plants, alike! Fresh-water fish on the left and salt-water fish on the right. Felines are next in line with large cages lining the walls. We have a large range of different cat breeds as well as Kneazles. The last room is also our loudest. Our Canines! Crups are a BEST SELLER! We also have several other breeds of canines. Both the Feline and Canine rooms have four play areas set up in the center of each room which holds toys and treats if you would like to play with one of the creatures before purchasing them!

Nancy decided it was probably best to stop by the pet store to pick up something for her new kitten...who still didn't have a name. Mostly because Nancy had not ASKED for a kitten. An animal was a lot of responsibility! It was a whole living THING she had to take care of, and for some reason her parents got the vibe that she'd WANTED one of them? Maybe they were worried she wouldn't make friends at Hogwarts, which was slightly concerning. Did they think Moritz and Joey were just going to IGNORE her when she got there?

Actually, they might. Joey might at least. Moritz probably wouldn't but...anyways. She digressed. The point was, she didn't want a cat, had never asked for a cat, and yet...she now had a cat.

It was a little boy kitten, and she figured she should get him a collar and some toys. Her parents had already given her a food and liter and all the essential stuff. Maybe she'd come up with a name while she browsed as well. Inspiration or something.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon was very disappointed when he learned that he couldn't take Dog with him to Hogwarts. He'd just gotten his dog back... and now he was being taken away again. And worse, he had to leave Dog in the hands of his family. In the hands of Megan, the most available and responsible person in his family. It was upsetting. He was upset.

Brandon was always upset.

After many tears, it had been suggested that he get another pet to bring with. He didn't want or need an owl, so he guessed he was getting a cat. He was apathetic about it. He wanted his dog.

Brandon entered the store, thinking maybe he'd buy an adult cat. He should probably buy some important things first(then he could put off having to look at animals and feeling sad). Heading to where the supplies were, he noticed a familiar face. "Hi Nancy," he said, making sure he wasn't sneaking up on her or anything. People didn't like that, even if he didn't mean to do it.

Nancy heard someone call out her name - which was odd because she didn't know THAT many people here - but smiled when she realized she DID in fact know the boy who was calling out to her. "Oh hey! Brandon, right?" she asked, remembering him from their run in at Flourish and Blotts earlier in the day.

"You don't happen to know anything about cats, do you?" she asked with a pause, raising her eyebrow at him.

"Yes, that's me," Brandon responded, impressed that she'd remembered his name. He stepped over to the items that she was looking at, noticing that she was shopping for cat supplies too. "I know a lot about cats." He wasn't bragging- he never did that, for fear that someone would be upset with him(the scariest thing in the world, seriously). He really did know a lot of things about animals! He'd taken care of his sister's cat before, and he was getting his own cat now... "Do you need to know more about cats?" Could she use help with getting cat things? Because Brandon was pretty much trained to be helpful at all times to everyone and he always felt really bad if he didn't offer to help.

"I'm getting an adult cat once I pick out supplies. It's because I can't bring my dog to Hogwarts." He was still sad about it. But he supposed a cat would be nice to feel sad with. "Do you have a cat already?"

Luther Apollo Starriver

Luther stepped into the loud store hoping to find a companion. 'I wish I could bring Leo to Hogwarts.' he thought.

For the better part of an hour, he wandered in the store looking at the animals in cages, tanks and other containers.

Then in a tank, he saw it, him actually if the tag on the tank was to be believed. A beautiful black snake adorned with a golden wave-like pattern on his smooth scales.

"You are so handsome." Luther said without realizing it. Then a voice said "You are not so bad for a human." Luther looked around to see who said it.

Seeing no one around him, he looked in the containers. Many magical creatures could speak human languages after all but he never heard of one small enough to fit in such containers. Then he heard the same voice again, "Yet as dumb as others, he doesn't even know he speaks the Tongue." Trying to locate the source of the sound Luther looked at the tank with the snake he was looking at when he heard the voice first.

Then something clicked and with it, countless many other questions appeared.

Feeling slightly dumb for thinking such a thing possible, he slowly talked to the snake "Can you... understand... me?" Just as Luther was starting to mock himself for thinking such a ridiculous thing, the voice spoke again and this time Luther was looking at the source. It was really the snake, after all. "Yes... human. I... can... understand you."

The condescending and taunting tone of the snake sobered up Luther from his utter befuddlement. "Hey, I don't know about you but I don't accidentally discover a rare ability every day. Even less with an arrogant snake." he huffed. The sound that came next was almost like laughter yet it was still so different. "Fine, fine. What's your name, human?"

Trying not to think of the absurdity of the situation he was in, he said "I am Luther Apollo Starriver and you, snake?" The snake reared slightly in its tank and spoke, "Hello, Luther Apollo Starriver. I am Alana, the First of my nestmates. Nice to meet you." Luther sighed and said, "Nice to meet you too, Alana. It's just Luther and I guess, we will have to finish this conversation later. Unless... you want to come with me?"

The snake was silent for a while, "I will go with you. I am bored of this tank. However, I demand to be fed or be able to hunt adequately." Nodding, Luther went to the counter to buy the required equipment and paid for Alana. Meanwhile, his mind was whirling with questions, 'How am I going to explain this to Caes, Aria and their dads? How am I going to explain this to Leo? Can I take her to Hogwarts? I will have to write to the new headmaster soon.'

One of the unique joys of the summer time for one Vera Brinley Thanatos was that of getting to spoil Sass rotten for a few months before she would have to leave him once more for the months at school. Though... she WAS hoping this term she might be able to receive special permissions to bring her snake along, though she had yet to write Professor Paton to inquire. That was... probably something she should get on, really.

But later. For now, she had some mice to purchase and a pocket full of coin in order to do so.

Except of COURSE before she even could made her way towards rodents, she was distracted by the other snakes on display. The brunette found herself gravitating closer to their enclosure, oohing and aahing over how cute they all were. There was in particular a little green garden snake who caught her eye... On a scale of 1 - 10, how mad did she think her Papa would be if she brought home another snake friend for Sass instead of special treats?

... How mad would SASS be?

It was a bit odd that for today's mood, Mackenzie was in fact, in a cheery disposition. Perhaps not as cheery as the usual friendly soul one would come across, but on that rare occasion, he was feeling all sorts of good. So good that the first shop he decided to visit was the Menagerie. Sure enough, it wasn't that much of a far cry from the place he calls home (they actually call their house a zoo), but nevertheless, he always had a penchant for spending a good amount of day at the Menagerie. So much so that this must be his umpteenth time circling the place, never getting tired of what's on display... particularly the area where the reptiles were housed.

Mackenzie had stopped dead in his tracks, quite surprised at what he saw. During his visits, the reptile section of the shop was almost always empty. He had not expected company. But anyway, he wasn't about to flee. Not when she's in his (unofficial) territory. "Quite convenient to carry around, that one," he said quietly as he stood next to the brunette girl. He'd seen her around school but didn't really make an effort to take a moment and chat.

It was hard to not be captivated by the reptile as it stared back at her, and she very much wished in that moment that she was one who could speak parseltongue and communicate with the creature. But that was apparently no where in her bloodline, and certainly not strong enough to have been inherited, so Vera instead would have to be just contented with eye contact and a wild imagination for what could be being communicated. Until she heard a voice anyways, and nearly jumped out of her skin until she realized it was just another patron.

... That jump was embarrassing. Deciding to move past it, she just smiled at the other student - who she was pretty sure was a Slytherin Sable Ileana had pointed out at least once - before brown eyes roamed back to the snake. "He's cute! I love his little tongue." She couldn't resist imitating him as the snake flicked his tongue out again. "I have a rosy boa at home though and something tells me she wouldn't like sharing attention." Or if she did... she'd prefer a mouse. "Are you a reptile fan?" Seemed so, if he also chose to hang out in this area of the store. Though... it also occurred to her perhaps she was just in his way.

After two school terms, it had become clear to Solomon that toads were the most BORING pets to keep. While he was somewhat fond of Goliath, his on the smaller side friend, he had accumulated plenty of jealously of classmates with their majestic owls or even those interesting little pygmy puffs who were just SO STINKING CUTE cool.

You would find Solomon attempting to tamper with the cage door of the one of the tarantulas, his other hand hovering over his pocket that held his wand. With a quick peek over his shoulder at the shopkeeper, Solomon slooooooowly grabbed hold of it.

Nothing to see here.

He'd been told that having the ability to speak to snakes was both a blessing and a curse. Something that Mackenzie had pondered upon many times over, and had remained neutral about it. Snakes in general were misunderstood creatures since they seem to be just lying around sleeping... or perhaps very much like him, enjoyed being alone and unbothered and kept their eyes on the things happening around him. This Slytherin did feel a bit slighted when he was told he was being anti-social. To him, he'd rather peg himself as one being highly selective with his associations. Much like the snakes.

Mackenzie took a step back and blinked at the other student, very much surprised, and confused at the sudden reaction. He'd quickly eyed the grass snake, noting how it has raised its head. Perhaps in a flight or fight mode, deciding if it could trust them both. "Sorry about that," Mackenzie said in a hushed tone, embarrassed with himself too. He was, after all, notoriously known for being quiet and having a tendency to just appear out of nowhere.

While she talked, the rising fifth-year made himself comfortable as he sat on the floor and watched the reptiles before him, catching a glimpse of his companion mimicking the snake. He'd quirked an eyebrow at her silliness but quickly erased the expression on his face as soon as she started talking about her pet. "Your suspicion is correct. Snakes are solitary creatures. They wouldn't want the extra company," they were pretty jealous and clingy if Mackenzie was to be believed. "Though you could provide a separate tank and a separate area for it." he continued, nodding towards the grass snake she fancied. "I have one as well. Her name is Ruby, and she's an albino ball python." perhaps a "reptile fan" was an understatement. "I'm happy I don't have to smuggle her to school anymore. I just got permission from Professor Paton that I could bring her to Hogwarts next term." he even got her to write a note for his dad as proof. "Will you be bringing yours too?"

You would find Solomon attempting to tamper with the cage door of the one of the tarantulas, his other hand hovering over his pocket that held his wand. With a quick peek over his shoulder at the shopkeeper, Solomon slooooooowly grabbed hold of it.

Nothing to see here.

Aurora had mostly completed her shopping list and was doing so well at avoiding being distracted by cute girly things when she passed by the magical menagerie which was home to some of her most favourite things in the world, animals. Her Ma wouldn’t mind if she detoured into one shop before she had to meet her again. With fifteen minutes left to spare, she pushed open the door and slipped into the store. The eleven (very almost twelve) year olds eyes lit up as she looked around debating in which direction she would go in first.

There were the noisy Crups barking in one direction and then the cute fluffy Kneazles and then all the birds squawking in their cages. Her family owned a Munchkin cat, one of those whose legs were half the size that they were supposed to be and so their bellies dragged on the ground. Her pet for school was a tiny Little Owl called Flora who had been a sweet companion during her first year but other than the occasional hoot and delivering post between herself and her Mums, wasn’t the most interesting pet she could own.

She scanned her way across the displays ogling at the salamanders and the fire crabs until she stopped by the tarantulas. A tiny shudder was sent through her spine. She wouldn’t say she was scared of spiders but it wasn’t her first choice of a pet. In front of her was a young boy, maybe slightly older than herself who was tinkering about with the display holding the eight legged guy and who not so subtly attempted to grab hold of it. Now being a Ravenclaw, Aurora was oddly observant and at only 4’5 was small enough to conceal herself and often go unnoticed.

She cleared her throat before speaking. “I saw that!” Aurora was no tattletale but it would be quite funny to see his expression when he realised someone was watching.

Solomon HAD been keeping an eye out for people who may have been watching, primarily adults and older looking kids who could be a prefect or just a general do-gooder. The most boring type of people. He could never imagine himself a prefect, more so a Gobstones captain. ANYWAY - despite his efforts, young kids were not on his radar, so when one called him out and claimed to have seen what he was up to, Solomon gasped and elbowed the tarantula cage, which knocked it into the cage beside it, straight onto the floor.

OPEN!!!!!!!

Look what you did!!” Solomon’s feet did a dance as he frantically located the tarantula that was now free. Thankfully, it remained still for the moment. “Phew,” he breathed, before finally looking at the girl in an expectant way.

She could go ahead and pick it up, that would be grand.

Snakes being misunderstood seemed to be a theme all around, especially given the term was also used for Slytherins as a whole. Which... she realized she did not currently have any Slytherin friends, but not from any type of prejudice of her own she just hadn't met many. She didn't think they had the same reputation as they had historically, but... in the past they'd often been stereotyped as being 'evil' as a whole group. Snakes weren't evil. And neither was any symbolism of them. They were simply a creature. A creature that she would point out, that happened to be a delicacy of one of the other house creatures.

But that was neither here nor there.

Her cheeks were a bit red from her own embarrassment, and she considered explaining that it wasn't him exactly but just that she'd been in her own head and thought the snake was speaking to her for a moment. But she realized that was actually probably even more embarrassing so perhaps it was best to just leave it alone, which was what she then did. She heard the quiet apology, but considering he was also looking at the reptile she couldn't decipher if it was for her or the snake, but on the off chance it'd been her and rude to not say anything she gave a quick, "It's fine!"

Even if she could not purchase the little guy, she was tempted to still ask if she could bring him out and hold him for a bit. Though truthfully that probably just would have further encouraged her to still adopt him, maybe take him home for Vesper where she could still hang out with the snake too. An almost good idea, but seemed if her sister was also going to get a pet she should probably be able to be a part of that selection. "Different enclosures does make sense but... then I'd also have to split my time between the pair of them and what if one started to feel neglected?" She was only home so many months of the year for the time being. And if she did receive permission to take Sass, well she couldn't very well take TWO creatures. It was better to wait. Once she was graduated she could have as many as she wanted. Her attention turned back towards the slytherin and she moved to perch near him, also facing towards the reptiles so she could observe. "Ball pythons are really cute! And the albino ones always look so magestic. Ruby is a good name. Is it because her eyes are red?" She knew not all of the albino creatures had reddish hue to their eyes, but she was curious if that was what had lent to his snake's name. "I still have to owl Professor Paton to double check but I'm hoping to take mine to school." And she was 14, soon to be 15 in November and a little more responsible so... she was expecting an affirmative answer.

Hopefully.

The problem really wasn't the house mascot, but the people who do stereotype the members of Slytherin. To be fair, the people who are not from that house would have a limited understanding of what Slytherins are truly made of, however, it is mostly the bias of past generations that overshadows the rather good side of Slytherin. They were just as determined as Gryffindors, loyal like Hufflepuffs, and smart like Ravenclaws. Now if he was to be biased about his own house, he would say that the combination of the other houses would be the reason why Slytherins are cunning. Mackenzie has had this understanding since the beginning as most of his family were former Slytherins, but he also understood the prejudice that came with it.

"As long as they are taken care of with food and the regular cleaning of their tanks, snakes won't mind. That's one of the great things about them, they don't need to be coddled." that was also the reason why he was okay leaving Ruby behind last term because she was fine on her own with little maintenance from his dad. A rare hint of a smile graced Mackenzie's face when she mentioned Ruby. "No, she actually has blue eyes. And I named her Ruby just because. She looks even more exquisite with that name, in my opinion." he said. "You'll be able to see and meet her next term," and to be honest, Mackenzie was quite excited about that.

The silence that came next brought a feeling of awkwardness, and before he could even delve into it, he'd heard a crash, breaking the tension building up. Mackenzie looked over his shoulder but didn't see anyone behind them. However, there seemed to be a need for cleanup in the next room. Well, not his problem.

Now, where was he? Ah yes, the awkward silence. "I actually find it funny that my pet got introduced first," he said, glancing over to the brunette beside him. "I'm Mackenzie by the way."

Had she not been such a lady, Aurora might have snorted in reaction to the boy being so clumsy that he dropped the cage and let the tarantula run free. It wasn’t her fault that the boy was frightened by tiny eleven year old girls. Evidently this boy was not a Gryffindor or he would’ve tried to disguise the surprise by playing it cool. A small smirk was plastered on the Ravenclaws face, satisfied that she had caught him in the act. That was until he blamed HER for being a clumsy oaf and losing the spider and demanding that SHE was responsible.

A scoff escaped her lips. Boys really were stupid. She could never understand why the older girls were so infatuated with them.

“I wasn’t the one getting into trouble!” Meaning there was absolutely no way she was going to pick the display up nor was she going to take the blame if an adult noticed. Aurora was lucky enough to be petite and blonde and be sporting the cutest pair of braided pigtails and denim dungarees, looking like an absolute Angel. Her Ma was also only at Florean’s and should she get upset would literally be there in a jiffy. Layla was pretty terrifying when she gave that grumpy stare. “What were you going to do with him anyway?” The poor tarantula deserved respect, even if they were a little bit creepy.

It was true that Vera herself knew next to nothing about Slytherins. But that could also be said truthfully of Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws as well, despite her twin and one of her dearest friends being one of each. To her - the houses were just a way of keeping them all from the biggest most massively fun sleep overs ever. But that was what the extra curricular events and the Room of Requirement were around to fix wasn't it? Otherwise, people were just people and the fact she hadn't bonded with any Slytherins was probably just that she'd have to admit that outside of her 'people' she'd made not enough effort with anyone else.

Perhaps this was the term to change that.

"I suppose I'll have to admit then this is entirely a me issue and I want to coddle." Sass was a trooper for putting up with her for it, though if one was to ask Vera she'd go so far as to say her snake clearly enjoyed lazing around her shoulders when she was just in the house with her. "Although perhaps my snake is fine with it because I doubt my Papa does that when I'm gone." Would Sass hate going to school with her then? That would be sad and she would have had a small internal freak out over it if she was not so distracted again by the imagery of his snake. "She sounds beautiful! And Ruby IS a good name regardless, I was just curious. I named mine Sass. Extra s's at the end are optional, but certainly make it more fun to say." Meeting more snakes also sounded like a lot of fun, so she was certainly on board. "Hopefully I'll have mine there to introduce as well! Though either way, I'm excited to see your Ruby."

Silence was something that while she generally chose to fill, was not uncomfortable to her when it was in someone else's presence. Perhaps because she was so used to her twin her preferred the quiet and actively sought it and every so often on the rarest of occasions she was willing to give it to him. In this moment, she was just enjoying looking at all the creatures and also already crafting her letter to Hady now that she was feeling extra motivated. She was even so distracted, she hardly noticed the loud noise. Which was maybe good because despite all her bravado about seeing acromantulas with Atlas, large spiders were one of the only things that made her quiver in her proverbial boots.

Hearing her surprise companion speak up again, she turned her head and laughed at his comment. That was rather unusual wasn't it? She offered her hand out in a greeting. "Nice to meet you, Mackenzie! I'm Vera."

Aside from the fact that his silence and quiet demeanour were misunderstood, Mackenzie found it even harder to expand his circle of friends. He'd been contemplating this, even comparing himself to his older brother Noah who had no trouble whatsoever in making acquaintances. It wasn't the problem of house prejudice, because that was so 1900s, but it was the fact that he had trouble trusting people's intentions. How Noah seemed unfazed by the risks of offering one's friendship to anyone who has eyes and ears to entertain him, Mackenzie wouldn't know. But perhaps, he thought, he could start by giving other people a chance this term and dip his toes in socialization. Maybe the idea of a sleepover wasn't as bad as he thought. In fact, he'd heard stories from his own parents about their shenanigans when they were in school. They did utilize the Room of Requirements, one of which they used to build a giant blanket fort with all sorts of pillows, which led to the inevitable (and legendary) pillow fight, Hogwarts has seen in generations.

Mackenzie quietly smiled to himself as he listened to his companion. "Then maybe you could tone it down a bit," he started, tilting his head wondering if he sounded offensive. "I mean, showing affection to a pet is great... a must even. But you know what they say, too much of it isn't really good for either of you." the pet becomes more clingy, the owner becomes distressed, and the endless cycle of it begins. "Besides, creatures of any kind must be able to have their own freedom from humans once in a while I think," he paused as he chewed on his inner cheek, "It's the least we could do since we have them caged, and not out there in the wild, which technically where they belong." he briefly imagined himself in the shoes of the snakes, but Mackenzie was also quick to inwardly cringe at what he just said. This was probably why people thought he was boring. He could go on and on and on about philosophical things. Sass with extra S's? "Sassssssy name," he said in an attempt to humour the girl. "Hopefully I get to meet yours too. Professor Paton's pretty cool about reptiles, so I'm certain you'll get a pass from her." And she's a cool professor overall.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Vera... Sasssss's mum," he said with a hint of a smile and gently shook her hand. He'd let go of her hand, hiding his awkwardness in the process and looked around them. "Do you have any other pets aside from a snake?"

If she'd been a Legilimens, Mackenzie's thoughts would have just wanted her to immediately introduce him to her twin Vasco. They didn't talk about it much, but she didn't see him spend much time with anyone outside of their group. Which worried her, given their group was primarily Gryffindor's and he was the lone Ravenclaw. She didn't think he'd been able to expand his social circle much either, though she supposed she had not considered the fact that maybe he didn't want to. He was naturally quiet and while he could have just preferred quiet and some solitude, his extroverted twin couldn't even imagine it. But maybe someone also observant would have been a good match for someone similar.

Truthfully, he was not the first person to tell her to tone it down. Though he did hold that particular honor when it came to being perhaps an overly affectionate pet owner. "Yeah... you're probably right. And if Sass is coming to school with me it's probably a good idea to do that now since she'll have more time around me." As opposed to just 3 months here and then 9 months (more or less) gone. "Why wouldn't it be good for me though?" She was not attempting to argue his points, but rather just understand this particular one. Wasn't having a pet and spending time with them supposed to lower heart rates or whatever? Or maybe that was just petting a cat or something. Being encaged when they were supposed to be in the wild made sense. Particularly when she considered the fact that even for herself she always craved more adventure. Hogwarts was not a 'cage' per se, but they did have boundary restrictions and she was always pushing those limits so that she could explore more. It was kind of a shame that Sass didn't get that same freedom. "Do you think we as humans are kind of evil for domesticating some creatures to be our pets?" Because if she was going to think about it more, she might have concluded the answer to that question was yes. Did that mean she was going to go home and set Sass free? Absolutely not, damage was done and that was one spoiled snake that might not be able to make it in the wild. But... still, perhaps it was a shame that had been her life from the beginning. As for finding Mackenzie boring? She did not currently. Snakes were something of interest to her so if he wanted to talk about those until she was blue in the face, she could do that. And while she might try to follow along with other conversations and topics... well, she could make no promises. But that was a her problem, not him.

He'd certainly correctly sussed out her type of humor, because when he also added the extra s's she couldn't help but give a small giggle. "I thought ssso." She replied cheekily, before giving a nod in agreement. Calling Hady cool about reptiles was probably an understatement, but she certainly understood where he was coming from. "I feel pretty good about it. I'm going to go home and send her a letter." Asking her the next time she brought Logan around to see Vasco just seemed like a crossing some type of line.

She returned the shake to the hand gently before taking back her hand. Any other pets? "We have a family crow. His name is Raven." She couldn't remember which of them had decided on that name for him now, but it still amused her a bit. "What about you? Is Ruby a sole pet or are there others in your house?"

It may or may not be a good idea to be introduced to her twin brother, considering how alike their temperaments seemed to be. Vera just might lose her head at their silence, seemingly "talking" to each other through means of legilimency. Cool for the boys, but maybe not for her. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to meet someone who also valued being solitary. He'd found that person through his older sister Catherine, Noah's twin. The only thing that he didn't like was how resentful his sister could be towards everyone who dared speak to her or break her peace.

"I'd suppose it's not entirely good for you in certain circumstances," he said thoughtfully, framing his next sentence as carefully as possible. "You wouldn't want to completely depend on your pet for comfort. You'd still need people for that." he nodded. Ah yes, the question of creature morality. It was something he had discussed with his own dad for many years now, and he did agree with his perspective. "I wouldn't say humans are evil for domesticating certain creatures," he started, tucking his knees closer to his chest. "They give us comfort and companionship in exchange for shelter, food, and protection. I think that is a good trade-off if only all humans were good pet owners. Sadly that is not the case." truth be told, it's what makes Mackenzie's blood boil. Enough for him to bring about his shadow side and curse those guilty of hurting creatures. "I'm sure you've heard of poachers, yes?" he paused and frowned. "We humans are the problem. Not the creatures." if there was anything he'd learned from his parents, it was respect for all people and living creatures no matter how cliche that may sound. Well, for one, he wouldn't want to be devoured by, say, a Hippogriff just because he didn't show it respect. Or Merlin forbid, a dragon, just because he wanted the dragon egg for money.

"A crow named Raven? That's quite convenient," he said in reply, contemplating back to the time he ran into the dilemma of naming his first owl. "I have a screech owl... his name is Sir Mordred," he said as he fought the urge to smile and laugh at the memory. "I, err... named him after my dad. I... thought it was a cool thing to do that time." much to the disappointment and amusement of his dad. "And then I also have a bearded dragon named Morpheus. He's actually Dad's, but now he's mine. Then Ruby, then my sister has her own crup. Quite a lot going on, actually." he said scratching the back of his head. Oh, and they do breed owls, so they have a bunch of those too at home.

Truthfully, if she did proceed with introductions the plan probably would have been to ditch the pair of them into a room together and then run for the hills herself. While she expected they might be able to get along, she also expected (respectfully) extreme boredom for herself. Plus.. what if her extroverted nature made it too much for the introverts? No, an intro and a retreat would by far be the better option. Or maybe even making Logan do the introduction and then all three guys could bond. He was still at least less than Vera was herself.

But that wasn't hard.

Her question had not meant to be a trap and she certainly hope he didn't feel like it was. She was truly curious, and the face she had as she listened was hopefully enough to convey that. Couldn't depend entirely on pets for comfort? Well... why though? "I don't know, I think pets are a good option for comfort though. They don't ask questions, they don't judge you or are surprised if you cry, they just... exist with you. Humans I think get too caught up in wanting to know the 'what' and how to fix things. Pets don't do that." Was she guilty of the wanting to fix things? Absolutely. But truthfully, she didn't know if her friends or siblings would be. She was very careful to keep all of her own emotions other than hyperactivity locked tight. She'd slipped a bit in the last term, but she was trying to rein that back in. "But.. it's not like we could have asked them if they'd want to make that trade though. What if they would have preferred to live alone and separate?" She could see his point and she didn't disagree, but it was hard to know if that's what all the creatures had wanted. Poachers? Her face screwed up in disgust but she gave a nod of her head. "Yeah, they are the worst of the worst. They don't even want creatures for their companionship, but for their resources." It was sad.

"We thought so. When we first got him it was hard to remember the difference between the two birds so... we made him technically both." Probably one of the smartest decisions she'd ever be involved in, if she was honest. "Your dad's name is Mordred? That's a really cool name! You absolutely should have named your owl after him. Sir Mordred especially sounds so distinguished." And he had a bearded dragon!? Her eyes went wide at that and her smile lit up a little more. "That sounds SO cool! I hear they're really good pets too. Loyal. Have you found that to be true?" Crups were adorable but they had to be the least exciting of the bunch for her. "It sounds like your family really likes animals!"

SPOILER!!: “lovely Aurora”

It had soon become apparent that she was not going to comply. Solomon sighed heavily and then gently bent down to pick up the cage, cringing and wincing as he did so. He grumbled, “you know, this would never have happened if you hadn’t have snuck up on me.” HMPTH. The beast was now safely back on the shelf, and the process of doing so had already formed a tight bond between them. The spider shall be named, Brutus.

I was only…” thinking about the chaos that would ensue if tarantulas were let loose in the magical menagerie, “… trying giving the poor guy some fresh air.” A dumb grin escaped his lips.

No but really, he would never do anything to harm the creature.

What are YOU doing by the spiders?” Solomon asked, oh-so judgementally. Because why would a sweet little girl be over here with the BRUTUSES.

Whatever the case may be, Mackenzie was open to meeting people this time around. He'd had enough brooding and judging to last him a lifetime, in fact, he'd like to think he's got that locked down for himself to be of use to him in the future. But for now, acquaintances at least are welcome. How would he know who to trust if he didn't get acquainted first in the first place, yes?

"Perhaps you haven't met the right people to comfort you... yet," he said quietly, giving her a proverbial nudge to not place all of her eggs in one basket. "I'm not going to question that, creatures are the best when it comes to giving us comfort... but to me, they are a means to help us not lose our sanity completely. A distraction, if you will. But we will still need fellow humans to help us with our inner conflicts and emotions. One only has to find the right people for that." he said looking at Vera and then back to the green snake. For a boy who's been surrounded by animals all his life, he would know this to be true. "Someone you could really, really trust." Mackenzie could sense that Vera just might be afraid of her own emotions... probably she saw her vulnerability as a weakness, and Mackenzie understood the dilemma. Not everyone was to be trusted anyway. "I really wouldn't know though if creatures wanted to live on their own. I mean, there are some who do approach humans for help... and they aren't domesticated even. So I would suppose mutual trust and respect have to be established. Leave wild animals alone, and take care of domesticated ones. It should be that simple."

Mackenzie chuckled, "That's really very clever. It can go both ways for most people." Raven the Crow, Crow the Raven? Yeah, either way, it works. As for his owl, well, he couldn't really reverse the damage done. The screech owl apparently will only respond to Sir Mordred... not Mord, or Mordy, Sir Mords... and whatever name he could come up with. His owl owned the name like it was no one's business. "That is an understatement. Our house just might pass off as a zoo at this point," he said, smiling. "My dad's a dragonologist, so he's technically into the creatures business. Good thing my mum's brilliant with her charms spellwork. She keeps the house looking like... well, a house. For humans." Were bearded dragons loyal? "Morpheus is more... territorial, I would say. He'd fight another bearded dragon around if he could," he said, carefully pulling out a sleeping reptile from his hoodie's pocket. "He just ate, so he's been out for a while now," he scratched under the chin of the bearded dragon to try and rouse it from its sweet after-snacks-slumber.

SPOILER!!: Spider!boy

It had soon become apparent that she was not going to comply. Solomon sighed heavily and then gently bent down to pick up the cage, cringing and wincing as he did so. He grumbled, “you know, this would never have happened if you hadn’t have snuck up on me.” HMPTH. What are YOU doing by the spiders?” Solomon asked, oh-so judgementally. Because why would a sweet little girl be over here with the BRUTUSES.

Of course Aurora was not going to comply. Shewasn’t the clumsy responsible one who dropped it in the first place. “I didn’t sneak up, you just didn’t notice me.” There was obviously a BIG difference there. The boy should work on his vigilance like they had been taught in Defence Against the Dark Arts. She also didn’t believe a word he was saying about trying to give the tarantula fresh air. “You’d better not let her near the Fwooper!” Birds ate insects didn’t they? She assumed that the Fwooper might too but they hadn’t yet covered that in lessons.

Aurora might have been tiny and blonde and resemble a fragile little Princess and in some ways that might have been true but that didn’t mean that she was scared of spiders. Apart from her ongoing war with Squirrels and Gnomes, the Ravenclaw loved most creatures and would always be fascinated by them. That didn’t necessarily mean that she was ever going to own one for she’d much rather have something cuddly and sweet that would love her unconditionally. “I was saying hello to ALL the animals.” Scaly and hairy and eight legged included. “Did you know that female tarantulas are bigger and eat the males?” she smirked. Because GIRLS were clearly superior!

The boy didn’t ask and most likely didn’t care but she was going to tell him anyway. “I’m Aurora.” Like the Princess. If she was going to keep his secret and not tell on him to any of the adults she’d better know his name.

Nah, I think Brutus could give a Fwooper a run for its money.” Solly reached into another pocket to jangle some coins, wondering if he had enough to purchase the little guy. He did a little sigh when realising he didn’t have anywhere near enough today. In fact, todays Diagon Alley trip would mostly consist of window shopping as he certainly wouldn’t get away with sneaking a tarantula into his pocket. “What’re you in here for?” He didn’t mean to ask it in a way that would imply they were in prison.

Her comment about female spiders eating the male spiders had him stumped, and he wasn’t sure if she was joking or not. “That’s just… not true.” Solomon looked to Brutus with a raised eyebrow, “how do I know that Brutus isn’t… a girl??” Hmmmmmm…

Cool name.” He nodded, before airing the thoughts that were going around in his head out loud. “Kinda like a lion, has roar in it. Cool. I’m Solomon, but you can call me Solly.” Unfortunately there were no cool creatures that could be associated with his name, but he did still sport Anna’s special nickname for him.

Are you a Gryffindor?” Easy assumption to make.
