It had been a while since there had been a practical potions class, the lack of magic having wreaked havoc on Noble's meticulously planned curriculum. It wasn't out of choice, mind; the lack of brewing was frustrating the Potions Master as much as the extra theory classes were probably frustrating the students.
Still, there were promising signs of doing something other than theory this morning. For one, Noble had a lit burner at the front of the classroom, the orange flame flickering with life. And not too far from it was a large beaker of wooden splints, and a row of opaque jars that looked suspiciously like they might contain ingredients. Looking further afield, there were a number of tea-towel covered objects spaced out along the side bench.
Curious indeed.
Noble is to be found in front of the blackboard, muttering a curse under his breath as his faded hand dropped the chalk he'd been writing with and he reached down to pick it up. It had been a long few months, and though he'd been trying to keep his head up for his students, to keep things as normal as possible, seeing today's date on his calendar had hit him like bludger to the stomach. Hopefully class would go as smoothly as he hoped. It was something different, at least.
Aboli was going to pretend she did not see Professor Noble drop his chalk OR that she heard what he'd muttered. Instead, she just cleared her throat as she made her way inside. "This looks promising, Professor!" she said as she took a seat at a table and slung her bag over the chair. She gestured at everything in the jars and whatnot.
And since no one else was really in here yet...she kinda just...awkwardly looked around and pretended she didn't feel awkward.
Because that would make things feel less so, right?

Were they having Potions class today? Morgan couldn't remember his schedule anymore - he didn't even try at this point - and just kept with his usual following other students to see which class he ended up in. As far as he knew, he was right at least half the time.
And today he followed Brian and Antonia through the dungeons and into the Potions classroom, where there was only Brian and Antonia. Professor Potions was here too - what were names anymore? Morgan couldn't remember anyone's but those closest to him, so he simply assigned their subject after their title to keep the professors straight in his head. So yeah, maybe they were having class.
"Hi, Professor," he greeted less enthusiastically than usual as he took a seat. "Oh! Are we making a potion today?" Morgan perked up a little as his eyes landed on the lit burner and jars of ingredients. Who'd have thought he'd see the day when he'd be excited about brewing potions? But anything was better than theory at this point.

Another day, another day full of lessons. But which lesson? Claudien couldn’t quite remember and that was exactly why she was flipping through the pages of the book she used to keep track of her schedule. She found it at last. “Potions. Right.” How silly of her to forget. Not. Next, the page with the directions to the potions classroom was located. And so, she followed the said crude direction until she saw the professor and a few gathered students. That was the Potions professor, right?
“Hello, profesor,’’ the Snakette greeted, choosing to ignore the man’s muttering. Her gaze slid from the flames to the jars. Interesting. There was no mention of them from her. Instead, she chose to find a seat at the back as usual and to prepare for the lesson.

So far, Bernie's strategy of following other Gryffindors around when it seemed to be time for class was working out nicely. Today, she'd followed Megan McStallion (who, as it turned out, was following someone else) alllllll the way into Potions. "Hello hello hello," she gave herself away by greeting anyone she saw. She didn't remember many names but she wasn't stuck up like SOME people. Claudette over there was definitely one of the stuck up ones.
Bernie dropped into a seat behind Megan and nodded to the professor. "Hello sir." She paused as she eyed all the THINGS he'd set up. "What's that?" Well she supposed Megan had just asked pretty much the same thing, so.... oops.

Heath didn't think he'd ever make it to potions today! He forgot which lesson he had, and then when he finally remembered that, he forgot where the classroom was. Seriously, why did he think potions was held in one of the towers?! That couldn't be further from its actual location!
As if that wasn't enough to deal with, there was also the issue of his bag periodically dropping from his transparent hand. It was safe to say that by the time he made it to the potions classroom, Heath was really frustrated! As such, he didn't think anything of Professor Nien Nunb's muttering; that word voiced exactly what he was thinking himself! "Hello, Professor," Heath greeted upon entry, giving the man a polite nod of acknowledgment that he realized too late that the man might not see because… transparency.
Heath beelined for his usual spot at the back of the room, and his mood brightened a bit as he saw Claudine nearby. "Hi," he whispered as quietly as possible. He would've said more, but somehow he didn't think Nien Nunb would take kindly to chitchat… or was he thinking of some other professor? He didn't know anymore! Everything seemed to run together.

Somehow, Phoebe found her way to the right classroom and generally the right time. Somehow, she managed to find a seat, although she'd fallen through more than her fair share of chairs recently and it stopped surprising her when she ended up on the floor, staring at the ceiling.
What class was this again? Cauldron. Noble. Smelly jars. Potions class! "Heeeeey... Nutmeg. Noble. Professor Noble. Hi. Good day. Smells a bit in here, right?"

Amazingly, Naya had found her way to the Potions classroom. Writing down her schedule and keeping it with her at all times had been extremely helpful. She was tired of showing up at the wrong class or the right class at the wrong time. Now she just had to worry about disappearing completely before class started. Entering the room, she said, “Hello Professor”.
Naya then looked for a seat, all the while checking out the interesting items that the professor had in the room. Given their lack of magic situation, she had pretty much given up trying to figure out what they would do in their classes. Seeing her housemate, she greeted her. “Hey Phoebe“. Then she sat down and took a moment to get her things together. Class should be starting any minute now.

They weren't going to clean again today, were they? Because honestly, between the classes and the detentions she'd been assigned, she was pretty sure she was about to have the entire castle squeaky clean. But when she entered the room, there was a lit burner at the front of the room, showing a sign that there might actually be something brewing-related going on today.
She passed by the covered objects and the professor, but seeing as the professor didn't seem to be in a really good mood at the moment, she passed on telling him hello. As the second year took her seat, she noted that everyone else, literally everyone else had told the professor hello. Okay, then... She'd tell him hello. No way was she being the only one not to greet him when he seemed to be really upset at something or another.
"Hello, Professor," she said, seeing as she wasn't too far away from him. No yelling across the classroom for her!

While Eiji would always prefer to have practical lessons, the theoretical had not particularly phased him all that much. Salt levels had remained mostly constant when it came to Potions despite conditions...but stepping into the classroom and see a burner lit gave him a bit of optimism. Just no one make too much noise or that optimism may get spooked and run for it. Not only that but Eiji had rather enjoyed the whole cleaning granules. If nothing else it made him feel like he was able to DO something in the field of potions and had truly taken the opportunity to clean and sanitize to heart. Whatever free time he had had had been used in this manner for several weeks post that particular lesson.
Taking up a spot towards the front of the classroom - front and center unlike literally every other lesson at Hogwarts - the seventh year set his bag down and retrieved a few essentials from it before aligning them neatly on his desk.
"Good day, professor," he greeted while his hazel-green eyes gave the set up a casual glance over. No sense in trying to guess what was under any of that. Professor Noble always revealed things when the time was right. That...and he did not want to guess incorrectly.
Anyway.

If someone wants to be the person sitting next to this grumpy prefect...
Walking into the dungeon, Ewan’s mood was instantly improved by the sight of the dancing flame of the Bunsen burner at the front of the classroom followed by the mysteriously covered objects at the side and the jars of opaque liquid. Indeed, if there was ever going to be something that would improve his mood, it would be a practical lesson. It had been suuuuuch a long time since they’d done anything that resembled magic that he’d almost forgotten what it felt like being a wizard which wasn’t exactly that hard for him anyway because he’d been a muggle for 10 years of his life.
If he hadn’t been ghosting spontaneously himself, he might have laughed at the dropping of the chalk by Professor Noble but as it was, he had a little sympathy. Instead, the prefect gave the older man a small nod and a “Hello Professor” before taking a seat with the other students at one of the tables. He had no idea who he was sitting next to but didn’t really try to figure it out either. Instead, he took out some of the essentials that he thought he might need and looked towards the front of the class where the professor stood, ready for the lesson to begin.
Aboli was going to pretend she did not see Professor Noble drop his chalk OR that she heard what he'd muttered. Instead, she just cleared her throat as she made her way inside. Because that would make things feel less so, right?
The chalk retrieved, Noble finally finished writing the title of today’s class on the board: Introduction to Metallurgy. Apparently he was just in time, as Aboli’s coughing announced that the first students were beginning to enter the room.
Did he care if they’d heard his previous comment? Not particularly. It was one of those days.
“I thought a change of pace was in order,” he commented, as he returned the chalk to the holder at the base of the blackboard, and moved over towards his desk.

The name of the next Slytherin to enter he had no such problems with. “Morning, Eiji,” Noble greeted the seventh year. Though he knew the topic of today’s class would be basic to the boy that had pestered him for alchemy classes for years, he had a suspicion Eiji would enjoy it nonetheless.

With the time now a few minutes past the hour, Noble moved towards the door to shut it just as the Ravenclaw Prefect entered. “Just in time,” he replied, closing the door behind him.
With slow, deliberate strides, Noble’s robes charcoal black robes flowed behind him as he returned to his desk. “I thought we’d take a break from the theory today, and do something that would usually be covered as a precursor to my NEWT-level alchemy course…an introduction to metallurgy.” He glanced around the room, gauging their reactions. “So…what do you already know about metallurgy? What sorts of things does the term cover?”
Ewan watched, his eyes drinking in the detail of the potion’s professor properly, the first time he’d actually payed attention in a lesson for a long time. It had been such a long time since something had pierced the misty film that was his life currently. Maybe it was the loss of memory or his ghostly features, but nothing seemed real. Not until today. Not until he actually had to pay attention in a lesson.
Raising his hand, he answered the professors question as simply as he could, what with this being an NEWT subject and there being students here who might struggle. “On its most basic level, metallurgy is the removal of metals from their ores. It looks at changing the metal for use. It is closely linked with alchamy too. You know, changing common metals into silver and gold”. He knew full well that there was so much more to metallurgy than meets the eye.
Slytherindor ♛ The Crazytastic Besties ♛ Shan Watson ♛
Noah had remembered Potions. One class he had remembered today and he was proud. Small baby steps, he had told himself. And maybe! His memory was getting better? Yeah! Maybe it was. Optimism was hard but he tried. So he stayed in that mindset. He felt his memory was getting slightly (? -this was debatable) better? Maybe. Or maybe he was simply getting more sleep. Metallurgy and alchemy? Like Full Metal Alchemist? Consider this boy very very VERY intrigued. He leaned a little further forward in his seat, excited by the topic.
He listened to Ewan’s comment and nodded. “Like Fools Gold!” Or was that a title of a movie he had watched a while ago. “You can combine different types of metals to make alloys that have hybrid properties... So sterling silver is silver and copper infused,” he offered.
Missa was there, kind of barely because of certain doom and gloom kind of thoughts. When Ewan joined her table, she offered him a small, weary smile but nothing more.
She was just not in the mood.
Although when the professor started speaking, she definitely felt interested. It was a topic she had only brushed over. Holding her hand up before speaking, Missa offered the little bit she knew about metallurgy, “metallurgy is a big thing in the muggle world too, their everyday lives are wrapped around it - from small watches to big space crafts, all their inventions are made chiefly of metals."

The door was closed and class was about to begin. And the topic for the day was.......Metallurgy. That was not exactly the first thing that came to Naya’s mind when she thought of fun topics for Potions class. Nevertheless, that was the topic of the day and there was a question on the table.
As was the norm these days, Naya had a hard time remembering what she had read on the topic. She was determined to answer the question though and she tried really hard to remember something. At last, a little nugget of information popped into her head and she raised her hand. Hopefully her answer was accurate.
“Metallurgy has to do with the study of the properties of metals and um..........their behaviors”, she added at the last minute. Would she ever get her memory back to normal and be able to put together a coherent sentence? Yikes.

Claudine had become quite accustomed to Heathen being around her during lessons by now. It didn't occur to her there was any other reason other than the fact that both of them liked to sit at the back of the classes. “Hi, Heathen,’’ she replied and giving him a smile. The girl had become even friendlier with him ever since he had made soup when she had come down with the cold. While waiting for things to get underway, she watched the other students trickle in and tried to remember their names. Sadly, she failed in most cases.
So… metallurgy was today’s topic?
The Snakette had nothing to add to the question for the older students seemed to have it covered. Yes, she’d just stay silent this time around even though she thought that the Professor had chosen quite an interesting topic.

Nettie couldn't believe they were still holding classes. AND exams. They were all basically see-through at this point, and some days she couldn't even hold her mascara wand to do her makeup without it falling through her fingertips as if she didn't exist! Yet for some reason, school continuing chugging right along with the curriculum. At this point Nettie was almost hoping that they'd cancel the rest of the term and make it up over the summer...or whenever they figured out what was going on. That little seance she'd attended had made her...somewhat optimistic? It was hard to say. Her mood varied by the hour, it seemed.
Right, Metallurgy. "Uh...it has to do with...metals and...what makes them...up?" she answered. That was literally all she could say right now. She knew she had studied this term so many times, too! She was going to fail every NEWT she took. Goodbye, uni. She was going to have to join the circus at this rate.

Islay had quietly greeted Professor Noble when she had entered the room before class had started. She simple hadn’t vocalized her greeting she had waved to him and had given the Professor a kind smile. There was a slight fear that she would of course mess up his name and make a fool of herself and she did not want that.
Not in the least.
Not when she actually was quite fond of Potions.
When Metallurgy was brought up she just tipped her head and looked around, watching everyone answer before deigning to raise her own hand. ”Metallurgy is both an art form and a branch of science that stems of the process of extracting pure metals from their ores and modifying them for use...it has uses in commercial and lab settings and has been used for like over six thousand years?” she gave a kind smile, ”its also said Nicholas Flamel’s philospher’s stone was supposed to turn base betals into gold which likely would have been achieved through a type of metallurgy” she had learned a bit of this of course because of studying at Beauxbaton and the rest...well, she just liked learning.
It wasn’t short term memory, so she hadn’t seemed to forget it yet.

How... how did they all know that stuff? Phoebe had trouble remembering her name most days, and the things she read in books didn't stay in her head after she turned the page. And these dummies knew the history of... what was it? Metal allergies?

Just the one greeting then, actually. Right right, cool cool cool. Bernie would do her best to remember to stop repeating things for next class.
But on the topic of metal allergies, she had to agree with her housemates: either Phoenicia or Island had this one right. Bernie was going to agree with Phoenicia.
"What she said," she tilted her head toward her roommate, trying to not be so obvious that she'd forgotten her name and everything just now. "A metal allergy is like when you wear a cheap necklace your dad bought you because it's the best he can afford but OF COURSE it's like 30° Celsius that day and he INSISTS you wear it, so you do, but you sweat a ton because you don't have a car and have to walk everywhere with your da, and of course the stupid necklace turns your neck green, so even when you take the cheap thing off, you still look like you're wearing one?? Is that a metal allergy?"
She scratched her head with her right hand where a not at all cheap charm bracelet was jingling and catching the light. Huh. Who had given THAT to her? Certainly not her father.... but Bernie couldn't remember for the life of her where she'd gotten this nice bracelet...

Valencia was intrigued by this topic. She had no desire to practice alchemy, but she was endlessly fascinated by the theories behind practical magic.
She raised her hand an offered an answer. "It's the study of metal and it's properties." She briefly paused before adding. "But, the suffix is leaning more toward the word meaning a process. You would think they'd have named the study of metal 'metalology'." And people said there was no reason she should be familiar with Classical Greek based Etymology.

Basic? Yes. Was Eiji upset about this? Not in the least.
While it was a topic that was covered at the baseline for first years at Himitsumahou and then more thoroughly in third year, it was nonetheless a topic Eiji did not mind revisiting. Especially with all the knowledge stored away in his long term memory which therefore left little margin for error as he could practically perform these tasks asleep they were so second nature to him. Though he would not put it past Professor Noble to surprise him with something he was less familiar with. The seventh year admired the man for that.
If they ever got out of here...Eiji was going to miss this man more than he currently realized.
But what could he say about metallurgy? His first thoughts were almost romantic in nature. How it was just as much an art as it was a science. A serenade between the physical and the chemical properties of metals and their balance. With a rich history dating back to 3000 BC when the ancient Egyptians harnesses the elements in the first recorded instances of smelting to extract useful ores. There was extractive metallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy...which considering the professor's burner he had to wonder if the second were on the table today. Of course, this was merely the tip of the iceberg with the seventh year's extensive knowledge on the subject...but he felt as soon as he opened his mouth that he may not shut up. And while he did enjoy boasting in the things he knew well, he had an intimate relationship with alchemy and he remained silent - though his face illuminated and was clearly excited by today's lesson.
Please, proceed professor. This Slytherin was practically salivating.

Tom was really confused about what the Professor was talking about, he was sure that he had heard the word before but he couldn't remember where. He raised his hand. "Isn't it something to do with metal?"
