It was clearly a brewing lesson today, with Noble's cauldron already atop his burner at the front desk and his equipment read laid out. Alongside it were several trays of ingredients and a couple of potted plants that would likely be recognisable to anyone with vague interest in herbology - one with thin sage green leaves and small clusters of lilac flowers, and another one with white daisy-like flowers. Both give off distinctive scents if you happen to brush close by them.
Though initially Noble might appear to not be in the room, he is in fact standing in the far back corner, returning some clean glassware from a previous class to the storage cupboards there. Though he might look busy, his gaze regularly moves to the door, watching as students enter and take their seats.
Cole wasn't skipping with excitement upon hearing that they we're brewing a calming solution today. The positive thing was that he didn't get scared right off the bat like before. He could do this. He just he had to take it slow and follow the steps to the letter. It helped that he had Naya beside him that Cole could get pointers from when he was feeling unsure of what to do. Taking out his wand, he used it to clean his cauldron, scissors, measuring cup and container. It wouldn't do to mess up because of improperly cleaned materials. He then wrote down the brewing instructions carefully, checking them against Naya's.
After taking a breath he got to work, setting his cauldron to a low heat and then focusing on the flobberworm mucus. With concentration he measured up the correct amount of 70ml flobberworm mucus and poured it into his cauldron to heat. Rising from his seat Cole went up front and cut off the three lavender head flowers with the use of his wand, making very sure that he had at least five inches of stalk left. Before going back to his workstation he also gathered four decent sized chamomile plant leaves for himself.
Cole had just retaken his seat when Professor Noble demonstrated the next steps. Finely chopping chamomile leaves didn't seem so hard but braiding lavender heads, please no..... Trying not to show the panic that was rising within him Cole focused on the first task. After quickly cleaning his silver knife he got to work with finely chopping his scrunched and bundled up chamomile leaves in the demonstrated rocking motion. When he had got a tablespoon full of leaves chopped, he sprinkled them over the water and set his timer to 5 minutes.
Now it came to the hard part; the dreaded braiding. Cole picked up his three lavender heads and tried to braid. The first attempt failed. It felt like he had too big fingers for this. Trying again with the same result he turned his head to Naya desperation clear in voice. "Naya, how am i supposed to braid without chopping off a flower head? Is there a trick?"

Trying again with the same result he turned his head to Naya desperation clear in voice. "Naya, how am i supposed to braid without chopping off a flower head? Is there a trick?"
It was time to move on to the next step in the brewing process and Naya added the instructions to her notes. Then she cleaned the additional equipment that she would need for the next few steps. That done, she gathered her chamomile leaves and squeezed them together in her hand. Once they were properly scrunched, she set them down and got her knife. Trying to do exactly as the professor did, she cut the leaves in one direction. Then she did the rocking motion cut in the other direction until the leaves were properly chopped.
Naya got her clean measuring spoons and scooped up the leaves. After making sure she had a tablespoonful, she carefully sprinkled the chopped leaves into her cauldron. She set her timer for five minutes and turned her attention to the next task. Braiding was next. That was no problem, in theory. Naya had been braiding her hair for years. Hopefully braiding plant stalks would be just as simple. She had just picked up her lavender heads when she heard Cole sounding a little panicked.
Clearly he was having a little difficulty with the braiding part. She could understand this. While some boys knew how to braid, she knew many that could not. Naya turned to her housemate and said, ”It’s not too hard, once you get the hang of it” Grabbing her stalks, she began to demonstrate. “Just keep your three stalks side by side. You take the one on the outside and cross it over the middle one, like this. Then you take the stalk on the other side and cross it over the middle one. You keep on going until you get almost to the end. The hardest part is knowing how to hold the stalks.” She continued to demonstrate and then said, “You try it.”
Naya took one of the stalks and tied it around the others, so they would stay together. At that moment, her timer went off. Keeping one eye on Cole she dropped her lavender braid into her cauldron and gave everything two clockwise stirs. Then she turned her complete attention to Cole, to see how he was coming along.

Charlie turned looking over her shoulder, “Okay Professor Nobel.” She turned and grabbed another chamomile leaf, well grabbing two just to be safe. She sat down and started clearing out the cauldron. She did not want anything bad to happen. That would be terrible and she could not stand the humiliation of a potion blowing up in her face or doing something entirely different than what it should do.
She quickly wrote down the rest of the instructions

Calming and sleeping potion
What you need:
-Cauldron (clean…duh)
-70 ml of flobberworm mucus
-3 lavender flower heads, stalk included
-4-5 chamomile plant leaves
What to do: 1. Heat flobberworm mucus over low heat. 2. Silver knife chop chamomile leaves (small silly) 3. Add tightly packed tablespoon of leaves and sprinkle into cauldron. 4. Simmer 5 minutes 5. Tie off lavender stalks 6. Add to cauldron 7. Simmer 5 minutes 8. 2 clockwise stirs
She put the flobberworm mucus into the cauldron and heated it over low. She began chopping the chamomile leaves the same way her mom showed her how to chop cilantro as a younger kid. After the leaves were finely chopped she packed it into the tablespoon and looked into the cauldron. Glancing around the room she tried to figure out if there was a specific way she needed to sprinkle the chamomile leaves, when she realized there wasn’t she sprinkled them and set the timer.
Her eyes tracked what Nobel was doing. Grabbing the lavender, she began to braid the stalks. She was good at that considering she had tons of practice on her little sister’s straight hair. With that complete now she just had to wait. Turning around she watched some of the boys struggling to braid their stalks. She had to hide her laughter at their struggles. When she noticed her timer was out she plopped the lavender in and stirred clockwise.

You know what probably would make this process easiest? If he just magicked the stalks to braid themselves...but then that would be admitting that he could not do this on his own and that was a brand of humiliation the Slytherin was not willing to accept. Same with accepting help from his peers - not that any had offered him any. James Eiji Rasting was funny like that. But that did not mean he was above eavesdropping when he heard the two Gryffindors dicussing how-to. Which...really wasn't anything new from what Professor Noble had already instructed. So...that was greaaaaaaaaaaaaat.
Keeping his head down like everyone else, Eiji painstakingly moved each stalk using his tweezers this time and managed something that...if you squinted a bit could pass as a braid. Needless to say...he was NOT pleased with the end result, but the initial five minutes of simmer was almost up and he was not about to fall behind - for the first time in his Hogwarts career - because of three stupid lavender stalks. Thus, into the cauldron the "braid" went (and right smack in the middle, thank you very much) and then another five minute simmer it was. Scowl on his face, though thankfully that was mostly hidden beneath his shaggy hair that could really use a trim, he applied the appropriate clockwise stirs when it was time.
Apparently karma, which he did not believe in to begin with, was catching up to him this term. Drop DADA, nearly get run through by Godric Gryffindor. Deny his little sister daisy chain and flower crown making time since she first asked him to play with her, now he couldn't properly brew a potion to his standards.
Life was cruel.

Braiding hairs and stalks was clearly something girl's knew how to do naturally from birth. For Cole it felt like a giant mystery. He wanted to give Naya a big hug for coming to his aid just then when he was struggling with his stalk's or he would have had a minor meltdown. Grabbing his stalks Cole placed them like Naya demonstrated and watched very closely how to do it. It seemed so easy when she did it. Determined to get the hang of it too Cole tried braiding again. Brow's furrowed and deeply focused he got going with his stalks, crossing the outside stalks over the middle one like in a criss cross motion.
When he finished, the stalks now looked like something that could pass as a braid even if it wasn't the most good looking braid he turned to Naya for some, if not praise at least an okay you managed it. "Naya, did i braid it right this time?" Cole wiped away some sweat from his forehead that had broken out as his timer rang. Now he just had to put the braid in and stir twice right?
Tom listened as the Professor told them what they were doing next, he then chopped the chamomile leaves very finally, before he went onto the next step. He measured out a tablespoon worth of them and sprinkled them over the flobberworm mucus, this was awesome, though he wished that they could make slime that would have been better.
After he had done that he did the next step of setting the timer and then letting it simmer for five minutes, this was going to be the longest five minutes of his life.
He grabbed the Lavender heads and started to braid them together, so okay maybe it wasn't going to be the longest five minutes of his live in the sense he thought but it was going to be hard to do this, he hated braiding things. Though he managed to do it. When the five minutes were up he dropped it in and then stirred twice clockwise.

Heath nodded, smiling slightly when Charlie asked to sit with him, but there wasn’t time to give a proper reply. The lesson was moving on, and before he knew it, they were already starting the brewing. He took a deep breath, remembering the advice his brother and sister gave him about potions class. Pay attention, take good notes, and follow the instructions to the letter. Okay, he could do this! If nothing else, at least it wasn’t frog dissection again.
Heath listened carefully to Professor Noble’s directions, jotting down the first steps in his notes. He looked at his cauldron and supplies arranged neatly in front of him. They looked pretty clean already, but he was going to give them a quick cleaning anyway. Better safe than sorry, right? Even a little bit of residue could mess up his potion, and having Noble vanish his work in front of everyone was the last thing he wanted! Once he was satisfied that his equipment was spotless, he put his cauldron on low heat and measured out 70 ml of flobberworm mucus, double and triple checking to make sure he had the measurement exact before adding it to his cauldron.
When that was done, Heath got up and made his way to the front of the room to get his lavender heads and chamomile leaves. He opted for scissors instead of his wand, as he wasn’t exactly the best at spells (especially in front of a classroom full of people). Knowing him, he’d probably panic and accidentally set the plants on fire or something! He carefully cut three heads of lavender, leaving five inches of stalk as instructed. He wondered why they needed so much stalk, but he supposed he’d find out soon enough. He then turned his attention to the chamomile, eyeing the plant for the perfect size leaves. Once he had cut four good sized leaves, he returned to his seat just in time to hear the next set of instructions.
Whoa, that was...a lot to take in! Heath was furiously taking notes, barely able to write fast enough to keep up with the new information. When Professor Noble stopped talking, Heath turned his attention to his chamomile leaves and picked up his silver knife. He bundled the leaves up and tried to chop them up exactly the way Professor Noble demonstrated, but it was a bit harder than it looked. Was he getting the rocking motion right? When he had a pile of finely chopped chamomile, he measured out one tablespoon, packing it as tightly as possible, and sprinkled the contents over the flobberworm mucus.
He set his timer for five minutes, and now came the hard part: braiding the lavender stalks. Heath had seen his mum and sister braid hair; he’d even seen his granny braid bread dough once, but he’d never tried braiding anything himself. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. If he could build an accurate model of the Millennium Falcon, surely he could do this, right? He lined up the three lavender heads, handling them as delicately as he would the pieces of one of his models, and tried bringing the left piece over the middle, then the right over the middle, just like the professor said. He got that part; the problem was that the middle piece kept slipping out!
After several more tries with the same result, Heath sighed in frustration. At this rate, the timer was going to go off before he got the braid done! He was ready to give up, but he kept at it, if only to avoid trouble. Finally, he got the middle stalk to stay in place long enough to start the braid, thank Merlin! Once he had that, the rest of the braid was fairly easy. When he got to the end, he used one of the stalks to tie a knot, fumbling slightly. The timer went off just as he finished tying. He carefully dropped the braid into his cauldron and stirred clockwise once… and twice.

Soothing solution. Jina didn't think she could give it to her fake baby, firstly because it is fake and secondly it was a Muggle Studies assignment so they probably were not allowed to use too much magic to take care of the kid. But she could probably drink it herself to calm down ... She cleaned her cauldron and measured out 70mL of flobberworm mucus, which she added into the cauldron. She set the cauldron at low heat and proceeded to cut three heads of lavender, leaving the appropriate length of stalk. From the chamomile plant, she cut out four leaves that she deemed to be decent sized.
Now she picked up her silver knife and chopped the chamomile leaves. She followed the professor's advice, which she found to be very effective. With the finely chopped leaves, she measured out a tightly packed tablespoon, trying to be as precise as possible. She carefully sprinkled them evenly over the flobberworm mucus in the cauldron. She set the timer for five minutes to let it simmer. What next? Oh, the lavender heads. This would be the difficult bit. She braided the stalks together by folding the left over the middle, the right over the middle and so on. It was kind of like braiding hair! Not that she braided her hair often, it wasn’t her thing. She tried to be extra careful so that she would not tear the flower heads. Since Potions was one of her strongest subjects and she was now quite experienced with handling ingredients, she quickly got the hang of braiding the stalks. When she successfully got to the end, she tied a knot around the braid using one of the stalks to secure it. This took slightly under five minutes, so when the time of simmering was up she lowered the whole lavender braid into the cauldron. With her ladle, she stirred the mixture twice in the clockwise direction.
Noble watched as the students continued on with their potions, already knowing that the next step would prove problematic to some. Even the usually confident Eiji seemed overly perplexed by the braid; clearly he hadn’t ever been coerced into braiding his younger sister’s hair, going by his second visit to the front desk for more lavender. Noble nodded at his two word explanation, before watching Fiona and Chloe having a much easier time of it. “That’s a good question, Claudine,” he responded to the second year. “The strands represent the entwining mind, body and soul…and thus braided together give the essence of connectedness and calm…bringing order to the previous disorder, both mentally and physically.”
His gaze moved to Bernadette now…who seemed to be chopping up way more than the required tablespoon of chamomile leaves. “Did you measure those, Bernadette?” he questioned, a warning tone in his voice as he raised an inquisitive eyebrow at the Gryffindor. “I said a tightly packed tablespoon, not a heaped spoonful.” She should perhaps think carefully about starting again if she hadn’t bothered to measure it out appropriately.
A glance over to Isla and Carsyn suggested they were doing well enough, but then Noble’s gaze fell on Cora and his nostrils flared. “Five points from Gryffindor for defacing school property,” he said, moving over to her work area. As soon as he had, it became very clear that she had neither measured her flobberworm mucus, or bothered to pick up the chamomile leaves from the front desk when she’d picked the lavender. Unconvinced he’d gotten her attention with the points loss, he slammed his hand down on the desk in front of her. “Either you start paying attention and doing this now,” he said, grey eyes serious, “Or you can come back and do it with me in detention after dinner. Do I make myself clear?”
He sure hoped he had. He had many many things he’d rather be doing than supervising detention. One of them being his new alchemy experiment. Which made him think of Eiji…who once again wasn’t at his desk, and was picking more lavender heads. “Perhaps you’d like to try Jillian’s technique?” Noble said to the Slytherin quietly as he passed him on the way back to the front. He’d noticed her ingenuity with the piece of string, to keep the stalks all in place and help with the tension of the braid.
He might have suggested the same to Cole too, but it seemed Naya had him covered with her demonstration. And with some trial and error, it seemed that Heath and Tom weren’t too far behind in getting theirs done too. As he watched Jina complete her two stirs, it was time to be moving on.
“Now add three sprigs of Valerian, turning up the heat and adding one whole sopophorous bean once you see the first bubbles forming on the bottom of the cauldron and starting to rise to the top.” He dropped the sprigs into his own cauldron, and turned up the temperature, waiting a few moments before the liquid began to bubble. He then added his sopophorous bean, and picked up his glass stirring rod. “Leaving it whole, rather than extracting the juice, lessens the soporific effect…instead making it more of a relaxant. The potion should turn a turquoise blue at this point, and once it has you’ll need to stir briskly seven times clockwise, until the mixture turns a pale blue-grey.” He did so, using what could perhaps be described more as a whisking action than a stir. “Then turn off your burner, and leave to cool for three minutes…it which point you’ll need to sweep your wand over the top of the cauldron, keeping your movements smooth and calm, and your wrist flat.” He demonstrated, finishing off his own soothing solution in the process.
"Please continue."

It...um, it WAS only a tablespoon! "I measured!" Bernie glanced up from her potion and eyed the professor. It would be FIIIIIIIINE, sir, just fine. It was very, VERY tightly packed, but fine. She knew how to measure a tablespoon, okay?!
So anyway, now they had to add Valerian... she hurried to update her notes. Once that was done, Bernie tossed in three sprigs of Valerian and turned up the heat on her cauldron, watching it C A R E F U L L Y for bubbles.

Carsyn was totally calm. She was totally not distracted by the goings ons of her dormmate or younger housemate. She was in potions class and she liked potions; she was GOOD at potions. Only problem? She was distracted, because how could she not be when Noble called attention to Cora like that. Which meant that she conveniently (or inconveniently) forgot about the stirs when her five minutes of simmering was up. If she forgot, then surely Noble was too preoccupied with the defiant students in the classroom to notice one slip like that as well.
Three sprigs of valerian .... increase the heat, drop a sopophorous bean into the cauldron. And stirring quickly seven times clockwise. It wasn't quite the color of Noble's demonstration, which had the fifth year frowning. It was kinda a pale blue. Kinda. Why? What happened? Turning off the burner, she let it cool, hoping it was just her eyes deceiving her. Perhaps it was within a reasonable shade? Maybe?

Fiona watched Professor Noble very carefully as he went through the next stages of making the Soothing Solution. She had to admit that she was feeling a bit nervous as he progressed but she was determined to persevere nonetheless.
She added the three sprigs of valerian to her cauldron before turning up the heat. As soon as she began to see bubbles forming at the bottom on her cauldron, Fiona carefully added the whole sopophorous bean into her potion before picking up her clean glass stirring rod.
Fiona noticed that her potion had turned turquoise blue in colour so she stirred her potion briskly seven times in a clockwise direction until the potion had become a pale blue-grey.
She turned off her burner and set her timer for three minutes to allow for her potion to cool. When the time was right, Fiona held her wand with her wrist flat and swept it over the top of her cauldron making sure her movement was smooth and calm.
After giving the equipment that needed cleaning a clean, Fiona wrote down her notes.

SOOTHING SOLUTION
Ingredients:
70ml flobberworm mucus
3 lavender flower heads (leave five inches of stalk)
4 chamomile leaves (decent-size)
3 valerian sprigs
One whole sopophorous bean
Method:
Heat flobberworm mucus in a cauldron over low heat.
Using your silver knife, finely chop the chamomile leaves and measure a tightly packed tablespoon's worth of leaves before sprinkling them over the surface of the flobberworm mucus. Simmer for five minutes.
While the potion is simmering, carefully braid the lavender heads together. When the five minutes are up, add the whole braid into the cauldron and stir twice clockwise.
Add three valerian sprigs to the potion then turn up the heat.
As soon as bubbles are seen at the bottom of the cauldron, add the whole sopophorous bean to the potion. Once the potion has turned a turquoise blue stir briskly seven times in a clockwise direction using a glass stirring rod until the potion turns a pale blue-grey.
Turn off the burner and set the timer for three minutes to allow for the potion to cool. Once the three minutes are up, sweep your wand over the top of the cauldron, keeping the motion calm and smooth and your wrist flat.
She did not have time to rest, as the final instructions were given soon after she finished her two clockwise stirs. She added three sprigs of Valerian into the cauldron and turned up the temperature. It did not take long for effervescence to be produced, rising from the bottom to the surface of the liquid. That was the cue for her to add a sopophorous bean in. It was interesting to note how the state of the bean (whole, rather than crushed) could maximise the relaxing effect of the final solution. Anyway, her potion was now a nice turquoise colour. She stirred it quickly seven times in the clockwise direction and found with satisfaction that it changed into the calming pale blue-grey colour not dissimilar to that which the professor himself produced.
Turning off the burner now, she set the timer for three minutes and let the hot solution cool down. She had three minutes of free time, which she used to clean up her equipments and workspace. When the time was up, she took out her wand from her pocket and swept it over the top of the cauldron, keeping her wrist flat. As she felt calm and relaxed, her movement was also controlled and smooth. It looked like she was done!

Naya watched Cole as he completed his braid. Nodding, she said, ”Yes, you got it right”. “Not bad for a rookie”, she said with a smile, “That should work just fine.”
Just then, the professor began to explain what they should do next. Naya turned back to her work. Donning her gloves again, she got her valerian sprigs and sopophorous bean. Then she added the sprigs to her cauldron. One, two, three. After turning the heat up, Naya waited for the potion to have rising bubbles before dropping her sopophorous bean into the mixture. Then, more waiting until the potion turned a pretty turquoise blue. Naya was relieved that her potion appeared to be looking good so far. She placed her stirring rod into the liquid and began to stir in a clockwise motion, while counting to herself. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.”
Naya waited hopefully and at last, her potion turned the required blue-gray. Was it pale enough? Naya wasn’t sure, but she hoped that it was. She turned of her heat and set her timer for three minutes. When the time was up, she swept her wand over the cauldron. Smooth, calm, flat wrist. Check.

The D for Dredworth was sort of looking like a P and unhappy with her handiwork, Cora scratched more vigorously at the surface of the desk. There was no denying that when she wanted to put her mind to something, she wanted to do it properly because she was so engrossed with the task she didn't even notice when Noble started doing the rounds.
That was until he slammed his hand down on the very desk she was still vandalising making art on.
A little bit of wee nearly came out and her knife clattered to the dungeon floor. Not because she was intimidated by Noble and his stern mug but because he'd given her a fright and did noone ever tell him it was bad manners to jump up on people like that!?
"Yes sir. Crystal," she rolled her eyes in response. Was there a potion equivalent of a chill pill? He needed it. She scrambled the desk, brb she had a knife to find.

For the most part, Gunnar usually kept quiet and to himself during Potions class. He found it necessary to keep his focus, especially as the subject demanded precision. And today really was no different as he found this type of soothing solution to be something potentially useful. He also briefly wondered if his parents put this potion to use themselves, but he'd have a different use for it.
Once he was finished with his notes and made certain that his cauldron was clean, Gunnar got to work, starting with measuring out the proper amount of flobberworm mucous and dumping into his cauldron set on a low flame. And then the Head Boy set about retrieving the rest of the instructed ingredients.
Three heads of lavender flowers with five inches of stalk and four large chamomile leaves - that was easy enough, and so was the chopping of the leaves before they were added, but the braiding of said stalks, not so much. He half wished he'd paid closer attention to his sister's hair-braiding as he was sure she was having no trouble with this step, while his braids were awkward and messy at best, even following Professor Noble's demonstration. But at least he hadn't crushed any flower heads, so it was a win as far as he was concerned.
Once he had them done and tied together, the Slytherin jotted down a few more notes in his potions journal while he waited for the mixture to simmer. At the five minute mark, he dropped the bundle in and gave the whole potion two clockwise stirs before looking up for the next set of steps.
It was a good thing that he was able to focus as some of the younger students were being awfully distracting today. But as Noble addressed the entire class again, Gunnar continued with his notes first to make sure he wasn't missing anything as sometimes the last steps were a bit trickier with making sure the proper color change occurred.
He added the Valerian sprigs, then slowly turned up the heat, watching the the liquid for any bubbles appearing. It took a moment, but once he saw the first few form and begin to rise to the top, he dropped in the sopophorous bean. The potion did turn a lovely shade of turquoise blue at that point, but he could only hope that the final change would still occur as he began to briskly stir in the same way he saw Noble.

Oh.
So that’s why the stems were braided. In her interpretation, this was a rather symbolic move. But it did answer her question even if she remained a little skeptical about the reason. She nodded a thank-you to Noble before jotting down her reply. Then she got back to work.
Three springs of valerian roots… ah, there they were. Claudine grabbed them and they were added to the cauldron. The burner was adjusted so that the heat went up. All the while, her keen gaze was on the lookout for the bubbles and the moment they appeared, the sopophorous bean was added. Now, she missed the moment her potion changed colours as she had been looking at Noble but upon looking back at the cauldron, she was delighted to take in this change. Claudine quickly picked up her stirring rod and stirred seven times, clockwise. She hoped she was brisk enough. Nevertheless, the colour now was pale blue-grey. The flame was put out, and her notes were updated as the cooling went on for three minutes.
The timer went off before she knew it. Wand substituted for the quill, the second year mirrored Noble’s actions as best as she could: flat wrist, the sweeping movement and calm.

Things were really coming along now. She added the three sprigs of Valerian and turned up the heat. How much heat? She didn't know, but turning it just a tad seemed to work. She watched her brew, and at the first sign of bubbles forming and rising, she gently added in the sopophorous bean. Following the professor's lead, Isla also picked up her glass stirring rod.
She found herself watching with her breath held as she waited to see what color her potion would turn. It was something that she's always feared--having to start [/i]alllll[/i] the way over when she'd already done so much work. Nothing to fear here, though! Her potion had taken on a reassuring shade of turquoise, and it was a really pretty shade if she did say so herself. She made the seven stirs and was slightly disappointed to see that beautiful shade of turquoise turn a pale blue-gray. Oh, well, it had been good while it'd lasted.
She turned off her burner and let things cool for three minutes. In the meantime, she swept her wand over her cauldron. Was there something she was supposed to be saying while she did this?

Charlie looked up at what Noble was doing watching his every movement. Grabbing her three sprigs of Valerian she was about to add them in when she realized she didn’t know if it should be a medium heat or all the way up, raising her hand she waited for Noble to come over, “exactly how high should the heat be? All the way up or above medium?” This could be the difference between turquoise and some color it shouldn’t be. She didn’t dare move on until she figured out what to do.... or one of the older students guided her.

With the professor's permission to use her knife, Phoebe was able to whip through the cutting and drying of her aloe at top speed. It was nice that not everyone insisted they use magic for every little thing, especially for those students who weren't terribly great at casting precise spells.
Phoebe cleaned her utensils as her cauldron heated, flobberworm mucus warming gently inside. Her clean little silver knife was back in use, chopping the the pungent chamomile into little bits. They weren't as even as her mother would do, but the woman was professionally trained and Phoebe could barely focus long enough to complete a task. She peeked at the mucus before dropping her chamomile bits into the cauldron. Now to simmer.
While the simmering happened, Phoebe turned her attention to the lavender stalks. She was actually quite proficient at braiding, especially flowers, and while some of her classmates struggled, Phoebe tugged the stalks into a very pretty braid. Her simmering was finished just as her simmering ended, and Phoebe tossed the braid into the cauldron.
Why was simmering so boring? She frowned at the cauldron and hmphed her way through another few minutes of bubbling and boringness. Couldn't she just stir it noooooow?

Okay, so far so good! Heath got his lavender stalk braid in the cauldron just in the nick of time. Now if he could just keep doing what he was doing, he might make it to the end without slipping up. He looked up from this potion at the sound of Professor Noble’s voice, hanging on to the professor’s every word as he jotted down the next set of instructions. Oh, so that’s why they needed a whole sopophorous bean… good to know.
Heath counted out three sprigs of valerian and added them to his cauldron. Then he carefully turned up the heat, keeping a watchful eye on his potion for the first signs of bubbles. The longer it took, the more nervous he got. What if he did something wrong? What if he turned the temperature too high? Or not high enough? Just when he was really starting to panic, he saw a few bubbles form and begin to rise to the top. As soon as he saw the bubbles, he dropped the sopophorous bean into the cauldron and watched as the potion changed color to a greenish-blue shade. That looked turquoise to him!
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven… Seven times Heath stirred the potion clockwise, and when he looked again, it had turned pale bluish-gray. Whew, he did it! After completing the seventh stir, he turned off the burner and set his timer for exactly three minutes. After the timer went off came the hard part: the wand movement. Wandwork was not Heath’s strong suit at all! HIs movements tended more toward nervous and jittery than the smooth and calm that the potion required. Oh, no! What if he did it wrong? He didn’t want to have to start over, especially when he was so close to finishing!
Heath took a deep breath, imagining himself as a Jedi using the Force. It may be weird, but it was the only way he could calm down enough to do the wand movement properly. Keeping his wrist flat, he swept his wand over the top of the cauldron. Was that it? Was he done now? He looked up, awaiting further instructions.

Was Eiji Rasting blushing? Yes, yes he was. And it was all because Professor Noble had noticed his struggle and pointed it out...along with further confirmation that he was among the few struggling with this step. He had not seen what Jillian was doing, entirely too focused on his own process for that and it was already a little too late since he had plopped his into the cauldron. "Perhaps next time, professor," he nodded hurriedly as slight panic sneaked in. He had lost too much precious time in trying to brain those stupid stalks.
Sweating a bit, Eiji wiped his brow with his sleeve and dropped the sprigs of Valerian in and turned up the heat. It started bubbling, as expected, but the solution seemed...thicker than it should be? Maybe? Adding the sopophorous bean may help thin it out a bit. Yeah, yeah that would do it. Sure. He nearly squished the bean a little with the side of his silver knife, but caught himself last second and dropped the whole bean in and.......... that was not the write color.
It was...kind of turquoise. Kind of not. And the way it was bubbling was not promising either.
He could fix this...there was always an ingredient to counter balance things. Too much salt, just add a bit of water to thin things out...or sugar...or... bloody hell where had he gone wrong in the process?
Was it the stupid stalks and his haphazard braiding?

Dooooooododododoooooooo. Bernie's attention might have wandered to her favorite topic (candy) as she watched her potion and waited for bubbles. When it did finally start to bubble, she checked her notes again and hurriedly dropped in the sophomoororosus (whatever it was) bean. That was the last ingredient then, right? Good thing she took SUCH good notes so she'd remember what to do next.
"WOOHOO!" the second year exclaimed mostly to herself as her potion turned blue. She then began to stir, briskly, but not too briskly because she had to count seven stirs exactly. She may or may not have been counting under her breath, possibly disturbing the person next to her.
After the stirring, the potion appeared to be blue-gray, maybe even a little turquoise-gray in her opinion, but she was happy with it. Bernie turned off the burner and settled back on her stool, setting her timer for three minutes. Again, her mind drifted off to candy and sweets and croissants, remembering the best croissants she'd ever had in Beauxbatons, and wondering if she could cajole a house elf into teaching her how to make them here in Britain?
The timer went off all too quickly, and Bernie concentrated to hold her wrist flat ???? at least, in a way that somewhat resembled the professor earlier, as she swept her wand across the cauldron. All done, she supposed....

The next few steps, Jillian had to assemble the ingredients near her. It was her system to not get too overwhelmed with the amount of things they will be using during potions class. She took a couple of the sprigs of Valerian and added 3 of them into the cauldron- leaving 2 of her extras on the table. After which she turned up the heat as demonstrated by Professor Noble. While she was waiting for it to bubble, she returned to her notes and added more of the procedures that she currently doing. She also had the sopophorous bean ready and placed it right next to the cauldron. As soon as she sees the liquid started to bubble up a bit she then added the whole sopophorous bean into the mix.
What was the color again? Blue right? Wait... no. It's suppose to be turquoise blue to be exact. Jillian leaned in closer to her cauldron just to make sure that her results are cooperating with her. As soon as that turquoise blue appears to her liking she quickly took her stirrer that was on her table and stir the mixture in a clockwise motion seven times swiftly.
Giving it another glance just to make sure that the colors did change into pale blue-grey color... Hmmmm…. Is this pale blue-grey enough? It did change into a pale blue-grey ish color but she is just hoping that it matches with the professor's result. Tapping the stirrer on the mouth of the cauldron she then placed it back on her desk again. She reached towards her burner and turned it off, setting the timer again for 3 minutes this time.

Check.
Cole's face light up with a bright smile after the praise he got from Naya. "Thanks, I couldn't have managed it without your help." Maybe he didn't have too big fingers after all? He didn't have time to say anything else to his housemate and friend before Professor Noble got demonstrating again. Focusing back on his work Cole made sure his gloves sat on right before he plucked up 3 valerian sprigs from his potions kit and dropped them one, two, three into his cauldron. Turning up the heat on his bruner he sneaked a glance sideways first at Naya and then at Cora to see what heat they had their burner's on. Cole adjusted the temperature slightly on his burner to mirror theirs and then waited patiently for the liquid to start bubbling. He then proceeded to add the sophoros bean that he had gotten from his potions kit.
With his glass rod in hand he watched and waited for his potion to turn a wonderful turquoise blue before he briskly started stirring one, two, three, four, five, six, seven times that he counted off to himself inside his head. If the potion didn't immediatly turned into the right colour should he stir more? Unsure Cole held his tongue as he watched and waited nervously. Moments later the potion turned pale blue-grey. Letting out a long sigh of relief Cole turned off his burner and sat his timer on 3 minutes. When the time was up he grabbed his wand and swept it over the cauldron in smooth and calm movements, making sure his wrist was held flat. Had he now successfully created a potion without causing a mess? If that was the case then it was definitley big writing home worthy news.
