It’s a cold December morning, but the usual chill of the dungeons is kept at bay in the potions classroom by the burner Noble has lit at the front desk. The room is also noticeably brighter than the hallway, the floating orbs suspended from the ceiling shining at their fullest luminescence for today’s class. Noble was particularly keen that everyone would be able to see clearly - and be clearly seen - for today’s topic.
The man himself is stood at his desk at the front of the classroom, a large polystyrene lidded box beside him. Never one for nonsense, there was something about his gaze that was especially focused and stern today. Had last week’s homework been collectively that bad? Or was something else on the man’s mind?
Regardless, his instructions to the entering students were clear. “Pick up a lab coat and safety glasses on your way in, and quickly and quietly take your seat.”
Alright, potions! Admittedly, it was one of the more favourable classes for the Gryffindor. This was in part because of all the remedial lessons he'd had with the professor over the years and partly because of its practical nature. There was always a decent chance that when he showed up, he would be DOING something and that went a long way with this one. It was for this reason that Kodee Chosen wasn't dragging his feet as he walked into the lab.
Lab coat and glasses? Got it.
Kodee shrugged into the coat before slapping the glasses like a real scientist. Snort. As if.
"Hey, bestfriend." He greeted with a wide grin as he turned to face Noble. People may not have known it, but they'd been buds for literal years...whether the man chose to admit it or not.
"Not sure where this is going but if we gotta suit up, it's gotta be good."
Consider him READY.
…
Kodee’s choice of greeting was met with stony silence and a roll of the eyes, which he knew full well would do nothing to discourage the Gryffindor; it certainly hadn’t over the last six years. The boy could be persistent and enthusiastic, when his interest was piqued. And for some completely unknown reason, Noble had become a subject of that interest despite his own obvious and strong dis-interest.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Kodee was one of the ones he sensed really could go either way with the topic of this lesson.

"G'day, professor," she greeted the Potions expert, fully determined to NOT lose House Points today. Hadn't she had a rocky enough year already?
Another one that could either make or break this particular class? Bernadette. Though it was a was positive start when she chose a seat not too far from the front. Somewhere Noble could keep a close eye and try to keep her focused and on track.
“Morning, Bernadette,” he replied with a nod.
SPOILER!!: Claudine

She squinted a bit in Noble’s direction. “Hi, Professor.’’ Noble was a good man, an even better professor (even if he did look extra serious today). Claudine enjoyed the lessons very much. Potions was her best subject.
As she made her way to the near back of the classroom (after taking the coat and glasses), the Snakette wondered what was in that box. Some exotic potion? Exotic Potion ingredients?? Who knew. Claudine couldn’t wait to find out what it was and she took her seat with high expectations.
Next to enter was Claudine, whose gaze was apparently still adjusting to the brighter classroom. Though, honestly, it wasn’t that much brighter than the sun-filled room they’d had at Beauxbatons last year. How Noble missed it.
“Hello, Claudine,” he greeted in return. As for what was in the box? She’d find out soon enough. Though whether she’d be quite so excited when she did would be interesting to find out.
SPOILER!!: Isla

There was something about the professor's gaze that said 'don't talk to me', but Isla decided to at least say hello anyway. "Hello, Professor," she said, just as she passed him by. Her eyes also caught sight of the box beside him, but she didn't really pay it any extra attention for now. Wasn't there always some kind of hidden something in most of her classes? She'd find out in all good time.
Before taking her seat, she picked up a lab coat and some safety glasses. What exactly were they doing today? Extra light? Coats and safety glasses? Sounded awesome! She didn't say another word as she took a seat and waited for things to get started.
Noble’s mood wasn’t aimed at any one person in particular, not just yet anyway, and whilst he found greetings and small talk somewhat superfluous, he didn’t have anything explicitly against polite salutations this morning. Therefore, Isla’s hello was returned with a nod. “Morning, Isla.”
SPOILER!!: Nina

She enjoyed being treated like a princess and he did not treat her as such, which was quite upsetting. It also didn't help that she had pretended to be terrible at potions ever since she transferred to Hogwarts in her third year. Of course, Nina was quite good at the subject (as was reflected in her recent examination scores).
Unfortunately, Professors received a copy of their scores... Which meant that the act was over and Noble knew. This made Nina highly uncomfortable, which was likely why she hurried her way into the classroom and grabbed a coat and glasses without saying a single word. Not that she would have said a word otherwise, but she also tried to avoid eye contact. Once she found an empty workstation, she set her things down and carefully put her coat on. She'd save the glasses for when they actually began because surely they would make her look absolutely ridiculous and she did not want to wear them a moment longer than she had to.
…and another Slytherin, and Noble was hardly surprised by the sixth year’s lack of greeting. Nina could be quite the gifted potioneer, should she choose to…and yet she’d let vanity interfere and mask her abilities, a choice that Noble couldn’t fully understand. It’d be interesting to see how she chose to approach her NEWT studies going forward.
SPOILER!!: Phoebe

And greeted the professor. "Hello, Professor Noble! That's a nice box you have there. Bet it's full of somethin' exciting."
…the bundle didn’t seem the easiest nor neatest way to accomplish her task, but she’d gotten to a seat and sorted it in the end. “Hello, Chloe,” he replied. “I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.”
It was certainly full and exciting to him. He sensed a fair few in the room wouldn’t agree though.

Making her way into the dungeons, she was surprised to find that the classroom was unusually bright. That was definitely a good thing. With winter approaching, the days had been getting more dreary, so the young Ravenclaw was thankful for any type of extra light and warmth. She picked up a lab coat and safety goggles, a sure sign that today's lesson might be extra difficult, she supposed.
"Good day, Professor," Avalon said politely, taking her seat. She gave Professor Noble an uneasy smile, noticing the particularly unhappy expression on his face. If Noble was as displeased already as he appeared, today might be a tough lesson indeed.
Well, that uneasy smile was hardly reassuring from the third year, and Noble raised an eyebrow. “I sure hope it’ll be a good day.” Though, previous experience of teaching this topic suggested it might not be as such.
SPOILER!!: Jillian

Upon arrival she took spotted the professor at his desk, with a polite smile she greeted the man "Hello, Professor" before moving to get a coat and a pair of goggles then sat on one of the chairs. She tidied up her hair into a ponytail before wearing the goggles. She hates having all the hair in her face, it was better this way.
The Slytherin Prefect was next to appear, and Noble was reassured as she tied up her hair without prompting. It was good practice, whether they were using burners or not. And in today’s class, she probably wouldn’t want her hands to be near her face. “Hello, Jillian.”

It felt...sterile, that sort of bright light, and the sixth year was not sure what to make of it all.
"Professor Noble," he greeted the man with a curt nod of the head as he collected a lab coat and safety glasses as instructed. Curious indeed, Eiji had a hunch that today he would need to be even more selective about who he sat with. Which ruled out a few of his usual suspects and drew his green hazel-green eyes to his housemate.
If he had to pick one student in the room that he honestly thought would fully and genuinely enjoy this lesson, it was Eiji. The topic, whilst not the alchemy he’d been eager to learn for so long, was right up the Slytherin’s alley. “Eiji,” Noble returned in kind with a nod of his own.

Throwing them on at once, not really bothering to think twice about if he looked stupid or not, his mind turned to the lesson at hand. If they needed safety equipment like this, it must be something a little dangerous.
“Good morning Professor” his eyes sliding from the potion masters face to the large polystyrene lidded box for a moment. “Do you need a hand with anything sir?” Potions had been one of his better classes and his OWL results had shown this. He’d been happy with them at least. Besides that, he actually enjoyed it. Reading the ridged set of instructions, placing the ingredients in a set order and following the minute details. There was just something about it that gave him an odd satisfaction. So, was it strange for him to offer help? Not really. Part of him was curious to know what was inside the box, half guessing it was something that they would have to come and collect when the lesson starts. The other half just wanted to be helpful because, that is what prefects are for.
Whatever the reasoning for the Ravenclaw’s question, it did nothing for the stern expression on the potion master’s face. “I do not,” Noble replied with a scowl. If he needed help, he would ask for it. No need for a teacher’s pet here.
SPOILER!!: Cole

Cole greeted their potions master upon entrance to the classroom with a plastered on bright smile. Fetching a pair of safety goggles and lab coat Cole made his way over to where Ewan was sitting. After putting on the lab coat, he placed the goggles on the desk before sitting down next to the slightly older prefect. Turning to the other boy Cole asked in a low whisper "Ewan, can you help me not mess up this lesson? I don't want to burn anymore fingers."
Noble knew that potions was hardly one of Cole’s favourite classes. The boy tended to look slightly in fear, regardless of what they were doing. Thankfully, Cole shouldn’t be able to burn any more fingers this class; there was no need for burners other than the one Noble had burning to keep the cold from the room on the front desk.
“Morning, Cole.”

Naya stopped and got her lab coat and goggles before heading toward her seat. Noticing her housemates, Phoebe and Cole, she gave each one a wave before sitting down. She took a few minutes to get her things in order and then waited patiently for class to begin.
Well, someone was cheerful this morning. Hopefully the Gryffindor’s good mood would last. Noble would appreciate her determination to succeed, at least. “Morning, Naya,” he greeted.

Whilst enthusiasm was generally welcomed in his classroom, bouncing not so much. Noble’s eyes narrowed as Blake chose a seat, knowing where he sat could have repercussions for the concentration of others in the room. “Hello, Blake.”
Noble was watching him closely.

He would be the only professor of their school she'd be happy to greet out loud (quietly still, of course), but maybe it was the fact he told them to get ready quickly and quietly that also made him her favourite. She didn't need to speak for no reason, and so she wouldn't.
Catherine got a lab coat and safety glasses and put them on, immediately feeling more proper and ready to work. Moving to her usual seat and the front(ish) and near one of the walls, she got her belongings ready and waited patiently for class to begin.
Noble had no problem with the silent, and possibly shy, first year; indeed, he appreciated her diligence. He nodded to her in recognition of her presence, before looking up to see who followed her in.

Could they touch them? Hold them? Keep one of them?
Something told him that the answer for all three was a simple no. Something like the look on Noble's face.
Uh. Right. Yeah.
"Hey, Professor," he said softly, giving him a small smile as he shuffled over to an empty seat. Setting his things down, he first tugged on the lab coat before strapping on the safety goggles, feeling a little....... better about whatever it is they were going to do. Or safer. Whatever it was, it wasn't likely to hurt them if they had a lab coat and goggles on.......
........ right?
Another shy one. And one he figured might have an unpredictable reaction to today’s class. He knew Lucas tended to thrive in the more scientific lessons, but this one was definitely on the biological side of things. And whilst it shouldn’t hurt, there was still reason why they required extra protective equipment today.
“Hi, Lucas.”

The dark-haired Ravenclaw took a deep breath to steel his nerve as he stepped into the room. "Hello, Professor," he greeted. By some miracle, he was able to get the words out without stuttering!
Heath wasted no time in picking up a lab coat and glasses, as per the professor's instructions. He shrugged into the coat and strapped on the glasses as he scurried off to a seat toward the back. It was only when he was settled that he turned his attention to the box at the front of the room. What was in there? For one fleeting moment, he thought it might be a vicious man-eating creature/plant, but this wasn't DADA or COMC or even Herbology. He figured whatever was in the box probably wouldn't attack him… or at least he hoped it wouldn't!
He had the sense that Heath was hoping to get as far away from him as possible by heading to the back of the room. Perhaps the Ravenclaw had forgotten the potion master’s preference for wandering the classroom to make sure no-one escaped his gaze…particularly the ones at the back.
“Morning, Heath,” he greeted.

"Hello Professor," The second year greeted cheerfully on her way to her seat, making quick work of it as the man in charge didn't seem like the type who stood for dawdling. She was excited for this, did he know? It probably wouldn't come as a surprise, but it didn't make it any less true.
Now WHAT was in that box?
Cecelia would be correct; Noble wasn’t one for dawdling. And he could practically see the excitement radiating from her. Hopefully the second year would still feel the same way in an hour’s time. “Hello, Cecelia.”

Realizing her manners she turned to their Professor, “hello Professor” now she could get back tk figuring out where to sit. She actually wasn’t too sure where she should sit today. Letting her eyes sweep the room she took note of the familiar faces. Finally deciding, she sat a seat behind Catherine she still wasn’t so certain that the girl didn’t hate her.
Not far behind Cecelia came another young Gryffindor. He wouldn’t have been all that worried had she chosen to stay quiet, though he was interested in her gaze sweeping the room. Was it so hard to choose a seat? “Charlotte,” he greeted with a nod.

Even if she still didn’t believe the theory that it was all some sort of elaborate Polyjuice plot, it was definitely odd. Besides, she figured Professor Noble would know if it was all due to a potion.
Although she wasn’t planning on asking her head of house that question, and his expression would have stopped her even if she had thought about asking it. She wasn’t afraid of the professor at all, but she also knew not to bring up unnecessary topics during a lesson. Instead, she’d merely taken a lab coat and goggles, slipping both on as she headed to her usual workstation, turning to give him a smile as she got herself settled in. “Good day, Professor Noble,” she added, before lapsing into the requested silence again, quietly wondering what was in the box. Were they working on antidotes again maybe?
Noble would be glad to hear that one of his prefects was being so vigilant. And she’d assumed right, it was best not to bring up unnecessary topics in her Head of House’s classroom. As it was, Noble had some things of his own he wanted to talk to his student team about. “Same to you, Carys. Could you stop by my office, when you get a moment?”

Noble glanced down at his watch; it was nearly time to start the lesson. Looking back up, he saw Tom scurrying over towards his seat. “I know I said quickly to your seat, Tom, but there’s no need to run.” He’d just meant for them to avoid lingering near the doorway too long.

SPOILER!!: Minjae

Minjae had RACED towards the potions classroom the moment he found out that he had a lesson there today. He didn't know which subject he liked the best, DADA or Potions. Although he would probably say potions in the potions classroom and DADA in the DADA classroom.
He could not explain why he enjoyed potions so much. Maybe because it was because he was so idle-minded most of the time and this subject actually required him to focus? Or maybe he secretly did like cooking? Whatever the reason, the Hufflepuff was never in a bad mood when he entered the potions classroom.
The fourteen year old had seen the other students grabbing a lab coat and goggles so he followed them and put one on as well. As he was placing his safety glasses on top of his head, he walked past the Professor who looked not very pleased today. Quietly? Did that mean he couldn't speak? or? "Hi Professor Noble" he whispered! Whispering was quietly right?
The whispered greeting was an interesting choice, and Noble shook his head in distain at the boy. “If you insist on greeting me, at least do it audibly,” he replied. Oh well.
As Minjae took his seat, Noble closed the classroom door with a flick of his wand. It was time to begin, and as was usual, he clapped his hands together to get everyone’s attention.
“First of all, you don’t need to be wearing you safety glasses just yet.”. A fact that should have been clear from the lack of glasses on his own face. And inevitably, they’d just be a nuisance for the moment, so they could go ahead and take them off until he said they needed them. “And then, to start us off… can you name some animals from which we can harvest ingredients? What organs or parts tend to be used?”
Thank goodness Professor Noble started out with a relatively easy question. Avalon was not really in the mood for looking stupid this morning. She thought back to her standard potion-making kit, and a few animal ingredients came to mind, particularly snakes and unicorns. She could think of quite a few uses for dragons in potions as well. Plus her brother had a potions closet that was full of weird dragon parts. "Dragons contain a lot of potion ingredients. I think that the horns and livers are most common. But I've heard that powdered dragon claw can also be useful." She couldn't remember the exact potion that it was used in, but she knew it was an ingredient nevertheless.

Nina looked around the room, noting how ridiculous some of her peers looked with their glasses already on. Not only was it rather funny, but it also made her worry a bit too. She didn't want others to look at her when she was made to wear them. It didn't help that the room was so well lit today either. In fact, she was sure that Professor Noble had done all of it on purpose so that he could see them look ridiculous and have a laugh about it later. She was sure of it.
She did, however, bring her attention back to the front of the room when Professor Noble began to address the class. His first question was honestly insulting, in her opinion. Practically every potion they worked with had some animal component, and as such it was hardly impressive that others could name them. She wasn't planning on answering a question anyway, but this fact also helped.

The roll of Noble's eyes were as good as a "hey bestfriend, welcome back to my class, you good? Good. Cool cool" in Kodee's book. In fact, that's exactly how he took it and it caused a wide grin to spread across the boy's face as he sunk into a seat right next to that Nina girl. All the stuff he had was thrown recklessly onto the table, taking up both his side and hers. She didn't have to worry, he didn't mind sharing the whole space with her. Her stuff could fit, too.
Despite Noble's suggestion--that's all that was, see?--Kodee chose to keep on his glasses. They made him feel like he was neck deep into an experiment and not like he was trying his hardest to sit still and listen to unnecessary discussions.
It was always easier once the actual lesson began.
"Unicorns are good for harvesting. The horns anyway. The blood's useful, too but I don't reckon anyone would cop to harvesting that. Are we going to need partners? I might have to change my seat."
No offense to Nina, just she was a pain when she got whiny and he still hadn't decided how seriously he was going to take this brew. Couldn't sit next to a wet blanket. No thanks.

"OK Professor!" he said, clearly audible right now as he took a seat. School could be very confusing sometimes. And he was not just talking about the subjects. In his opinion he should have earned House-points for whispering because one; it was done quietly and two; he was still being respectful by greeting the professor. But he guessed he didn't make the rules around here. Yet... One day he was going to buy Hogwarts and turn it in to a awesome resort and he'd be even more loaded with money than he already was! haha!
Grinning rather sheepishly at his thoughts, Minjae realized that he had almost missed the first question but luckily he still got it. His hand went immediately in to the air. "Billywig stings are used in several potions as well so it would be good to harvest them" he said as he lowered his hand but continued talking. "On its own, the sting of the Billywig causes you to become giddy and you start to float and i know its used in Hair-Raising Potion. And six dried Billywig stings are used in the wideye potion and ...uuuh..." he thought for a second or two. "Antidote to uncommon potions !"
Catherine only noticed Charlie sitting behind her because she looked up and around once in a while from getting her workspace ready. She didn't exactly greet the girl, but she gave the GRyffindor a long look as a way of... acknowledgement. Not judgement, just acknowledgement for now.
The Ravenclaw took her safety glasses off and put them gingerly on the table in front of her when professor Noble said they didn't need to be wearing them yet. She got her parchment, ink and quill ready when he asked the first question. Catherine would be writing most of her classmates' answers down if they weren't wrong, obviously and she looked up here and there to see who was speaking up.
The first thing that popped into her mind for her to contribute - yes, she was happy to speak up still very quietly in Potions - was armadillo bile. Technically that wasn't an organ or a part of the animal, technically, it was something it produced. Although she didn't think that answer would be seen as wrong - because it technically wasn't - she'd prefer to give a better one that couldn't be questioned on any level. "Graphorns' horns." Catherine offered awfully quietly, yet in the hopes at least the professor could hear her, since she was sitting pretty close to where he was standing.
That was a silly sounding answer, but it was a correct one nonetheless. Although the silliness of the sound made Catherine turn slightly red and she looked down, pretending to continue writing something on her parchment so her hair would cover her face.

Having sat in the middle of the room she was able to people watch for a little bit. Taking in the seats people had picked, at least the ones in front of her. She carefully made sure everything was there that she would need and thought a moment about Noble and what they might be doing for the day. He always had them doing interesting things, so she figured today wouldn't be any different.
His first question though turned her stomach. Chloe liked potions, but she really liked not thinking about the poor animals they used. It was kind of like cooking, she liked meat, but she didn't want to fully think about the poor animal she was eating. It was easier to just see it at food without a face, just as potions ingredients as that not the face of what they used.
Lifting her hand she thought about the different animals, 'We use newts and frogs. Their eyes and legs as well as blood from many." Not that she needed the visuals that were now in her head, but it was part of the class so she ignored the stomach turning and focused on what other answers were said.
Cole was pleased that he hadn't put on the safety glasses like some others of his peers. It was evident from Professor Noble's tone that he wasn't fully content with that. Considering his track record in potions, he was glad to not be zeroed in on just yet. Class started with a fairly easy question which was a relief. An animal immediatly came to mind so Cole shot his hand up in the air to answer with some confidence to his tone. "Frozen eggs from the Ashwinder serpent is used as an ingredient in many love potions and most notably the Felix Felicis. The eggs can also be used if swallowed whole as an antidote to augue."
Blake slid his glasses up to the top of his head ... he probably looked pretty cool... but that's what neither here nor there. Paying close attention to what the professor was talking about he tried to think what animals they had previous used in class.
Raising his hand he replied. "Well Unicorn Horn is used .. and maybe their hair to." Blake couldn't remember for sure about the hair part .. but he horn ... that was a sure thing.

Ewan nodded and smiled at Cole, even despite the fact that he wasn’t exactly sure of what the lesson was about. “I mean, I can help you not mess up and catch your fingers on fire but I’, not sure what we’re doing yet so…” laughing a little as he replied. He would try his best but he couldn’t promise anything. For one thing, he didn’t know how good Cole was at potions and he wasn’t a miracle worker.
The smile on his face quickly dissipated as Noble replied to offer for help with a scowl. So much for being helpful. He wouldn’t bother next time. Leaving his safety goggles on defiantly, he listened to the rest of the instructions, a scowl on his face too now. Maybe if his instructions were a little clearer, the class might have known what to do. Reluctantly, Ewan just offered a small answer. Sure, he could have gone into detail but he didn’t feel like it. “Abraxen’s for their hair and beetles for their eyes”. There, that would do.

Naya sat up straighter when the professor began to speak. Class was in session and she did not want to miss anything. They went straight into question mode and the Gryffindor tried to figure out what they would be working on based on the question. She didn’t have a good guess, but listened as her classmates gave their answers.
She also had an answer to the question and was anxious to add her two cents to the conversation. Raising her hand, Naya began to share her thoughts with the group. “Bezoar comes from the stomach of a goat.” That was definitely an important ingredient that came from an animal.

Jillian straightened up her back when the professor started the lesson. She smiled before taking a medium size parchment out to write down her note. In Potions, there's always notes. She tapped her fingers lightly on the table as she thought about Professor Noble's question. Hmmm...
She remembers one "Acromantula venom is secreted from the pincers of acromantulas." she said after raising her arm. The venom is an ingredient that can be used in Potions.

Ooookay, so no safety glasses yet. Cecelia casually removed hers as if she'd never been wearing them at all and set them to the side, giving them a little glance before turning her attention back to the professor. She wasn't TOO excited about the whole harvesting subject matter, did he know? Not 'cause she was squeamish when it came to guts and stuff, but 'cause she was a BIG creature lover. Like her mum that way, Cecelia was.
"Professor, does getting the mucus from flobberworms count as harvesting? It helps make potions thicker." So it was kind of useful, even if it was really gross.

Claudine hadn’t put on her glasses as yet which was a good thing since the things weren’t required as yet. She eyed a few of her fellows who had donned theirs. Noble hadn’t given any instructions to put them on just yet. As they delved into the lesson, she unknowingly leaned forward slightly. Were they going to find out what was in the box?
No, apparently not as yet.
Her hand went up and as she waited to be called on, Claudine listened carefully in case someone decided to give the same answer she had in mind. Fortunately, no one did. “Griffins’ claws,’’ was the answer when her time came. “They usually end up being powdered.’’

Isla hadn't put on her safety glasses yet, so nothing to take off over here. There seemed to be a lack of small talk, but she'd learned to expect that from this professor. Not everybody was a big talker, and that was okay. Sometimes it made the first year a little scared of them, though. In other words, Noble was one professor she did not want to cross the wrong path with.
Anyway... They had moved on to talked about animals they could harvest ingredients from. It only halfway made Isla shudder. She was still a little unsure about collecting something from an animal. Potions class was getting here more used to it, though. She tried to follow along with what her classmates were saying. Mainly because she was supposed to be paying attention, but also because she didn't want to repeat anything.
"What about the spleen of a newt" she suggested, her hand in the air. She didn't think anybody had suggested that one yet, and if they did, she'd missed it.

Heath practically jumped out of his skin when Professor Noble said they didn't need their glasses on yet. Duh! Stupid Heath, stupid, stupid! he inwardly berated himself as he removed his glasses. He should've guessed that! He'd just done what he always did when he doubted himself (which was nearly all the time in this class): follow the crowd. He half-expected the professor to dock points from all the students who put their glasses on too soon, but the fact that that didn't happen did little to ease his mind.
Heath was so afraid of making another mistake - a bigger one that would get him into trouble - that he almost missed the question. What was it again? Oh, right… animal parts that can be used for potion ingredients. His first thoughts turned to eye of newt - because where else would an aspiring actor's mind go? - but that had already been said. Hmm… maybe he was on to something. Not repeating the newt eyes answer obviously, but maybe something else from the Witches' Chant would jog his memory!
Heath mentally ran through the scene, quickly dismissing most of the items mentioned as not real potion ingredients or not relevant to the question. Toe of frog? No. Tongue of dog? Eww, definitely not! Wool of bat? No - wait, hold on a second! Bats… that was it! Not their wool necessarily, but Heath remembered potions that used bat spleens and wings. Was that answer good enough?
He timidly raised his hand. "Bats," he said when called on, keeping his answer short and to the point in hopes of getting all the words out before he lost the nerve to speak or started stuttering. "Specifically their wings and their spleens."

For some reason, the word harvest was icky to Bernie. It made her squirm in her seat and feel reluctant to answer the question. She felt like she should feel bad for the animals they had harvested? Should they like, say a prayer of thanks for all the dead beasts?
Finally, she thought of one that didn't necessarily involve MURDERING the animal, since it hadn't been born yet, and raised her hand.
"Ashwinder eggs?"

Oh. No safety goggles?
That was...... embarrassing.
A sheepish look spread across his face as he slowly removed the goggles and set them down in front of him. While Noble didn’t address anyone directly - and there were lots of people taking off their goggles too - he couldn’t help but feel as though all eyes were on him. As if he was under a spotlight, which was only made worse by how bright the room was.
He didn’t have to wait long for a distraction, causing him to look up again. Some animals that are used for potion ingredients? Uhhh........ that was a broad question, wasn’t it? Or one that had a lot - a LOT - of answers. Lucas paused to run a hand through his curly hair, mentally running through as many animals that were used for potions ingredients as he could remember until he landed on one that-
Oh.
His hand shot up. "What about Occamies? Their egg shells are used in Felix Felicis, the lucky potion." Pause. "They’ve been used in shampoos as well." Shampoos were just a type of potion, right? Right??

Wearing a lab coat was fun. It made him feel all fancy and official. He could be a professional potioneer or a doctor or something. Or an evil scientist. Yes, that one was much more fun. He tried to think of how an evil scientist would answer this question. Someone had said unicorns, and that was a good one. Unicorns were so good that evil scientists were probably the only ones who wanted to use them for potions. Except he was pretty sure that taking their horns didn't kill them. But it still seemed mean. Taking some of their hair was probably fine, though. Acromantula also seemed like a pretty good evil scientist answer. Those were creepy. Just the kind of animal you'd expect an evil scientist to love.
In the end, he came up with an Alexandre answer instead of an evil scientist answer. He raised his hand. "Uh, worms, professor. Like flobberworms, I mean. Those are used in potions sometimes."

Phoebe grinned as she shoved the goggles off her face and up into her hair. She was pleased at the professor's response, the lovely old grump. He was one of her favorites, did he know? She watched that box of his with interest before finally paying attention to the answers around her.
There were a TON of creature parts they used. Eyeballs and liver bits and shredded toenails and things. She raised her hand. "Professor, there are twelve uses for dragon blood. Are those twelve uses in potions, or is 'potions' just one of the uses?"

........ No.
Nina watched as Kodee began making his way over and no no no no no no no. He was NOT going to sit here. No. She even bent down to grab her things in order to place them on the seat next to her so that he couldn't, but before she had the chance to do so... He was already sitting. If there was one person in this entire castle that she did not want to share a workspace with, it was him. She had seen first hand, during their internship, how careless he was. And she did NOT need to be sat next to him for potions of all classes. If any!!!
She look at him in acknowledgement, however, because she did have manners, but did glare when he took up all of the table space.
A glare which only intensified when he told Professor Noble he would need to change his seat??????? She didn't want to be sitting next to him, either!!! For the record!!! But she took MAJOR offense to his words nevertheless.

Oh. That was...sad, he supposed. Though he sometimes felt like his mum and dad talked too much but that was beside the point. "No...my mum was a Gryffindor. Dad a Hufflpuff...but they were all in school together apparently."
But he did not have time to say more as class began and their professor all to easily stole focus.
Professor Noble, you officially had this 15-year-old's attention. Most of it at least. His eyes did shift to the polystyrene lidded box after the word "harvesting" left the man's lips. No wonder the Potions Master had given him that look when he had stepped into the classroom.
That was what they were doing today, right? Harvesting. But what? Surely nothing rare or that was particularly valuable considering that inexperienced hands would be handling things. The thought made the sixth year's stomach squirm, because harvesting could be delicate work and the fact that some of his peers may not take this seriously or may be careless with their incisions and waste the sacrifice of the creature's life. And Eiji hated waste.
Also...he expected Nina to scream. Or a few someone's to scream. Clearly he had chosen his seat correctly today...unless Jillian was a screamer too...but based on what mum had said about her dad he was banking on more of that potioneer spirit to be in her veins.
Entirely sidetracked now, but with eyes glistening with GLEE towards the professor, the Slytherin remained quiet for this question and kept to his own thoughts instead.

Potions was one of those classes that Carsyn enjoyed if nothing more than it required precise measurements and accuracy. Similar to baking, which Carsyn found to one of those activities that helped soothe her mind and de-stress.
Safety goggles though was one of those accessories that had the Gryffindor extra curious about today's lesson since it wasn't a normal addition, but she would be patient ... for now. Goggles resting on her desk, her attention was on Noble as he started. Wait, what?? This was like the most basic of questions because she was pretty sure most animals had parts to be used in potions, didn't they? There was seriously a huge variety and she wasn't sure there was even a creature that wasn't used for something. Maybe kneazles or crups didn't have uses in potion ingredients?
"Crocodile hearts." As far as what they were used for, Carsyn had literally no idea but she was pretty sureeeee she'd seen them on the supply shelf once.
