Default Wand Fitting

Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

In front of the counter there is the empty space that is designated as the fitting area. Here is where wands are fitted. After being measured by the magical measuring tape, you will be assisted by a worker who will then endeavor to fit you with your perfect wand and start pulling boxes from the shelves, which stretch back impossibly far and up so high that even the tallest people have to tip their head back to see the tops.

Long sliding ladders are attached to every stretch of shelves, and the wandmakers make great use of these to reach those wands which are tucked away high up. There seems to be a filing system of sorts, some kind of method to the madness, though most of the boxes are unmarked. Is it a colour code? Or is it shape? size? smell? Something else? Well you'll never know unless you get a job here. Luckily, and out of sheer necessity, these shelves have been bespelled so that wandboxes are not in danger of flying everywhere due to errant spells cast by children wielding their new wands.

Text Cut: wand fitting instructions

⌦ In order to receive a wand, please take the WAND QUIZ ONCE for the character who is here for a wand. Then, post your character being measured by the "magical measuring tape" ONCE in this thread. This thread is not one where you should interact with others, one post here please! It serves as our queue!

See the example post below, or look at other posts in this thread from previous terms.

Text Cut: example post
Jessica went into Ollivanders with more than her share of nerves, it was time for her first wand! The eleven year old made her way over to the measuring area and waited for her turn. Soon enough the measuring tape reached her and began zipping about, straightening with a snap and measuring out her height and, when she held her arms out, she watched it take a measurement of how long they were too. Fun! Did that mean her wand would be as big as her whole arm?

The girl stepped away from the measuring area and she eagerly waited for the shopkeeper to find her wand.

⌦ Please take the SORTING QUIZ first and wait to be placed in your house before taking the wand quiz! Your house effects your final wand in our quiz! This goes for current members who are re-sorting too, though you may take the quiz in advance if you know what your new house will be.

⌦ You may role play the magical measuring tape, but you may not role play for the shopkeepers. Ollivander does not work here!

⌦ After submitting the wand quiz and posting in this thread, please wait for a shop worker to assist you and your character in finding their perfect wand match. You do not have to RP to get your wand, but it is highly encouraged as a part of enriching your RP experience.

⌦ Please do not stretch the wand fitting experience out too long, it should not take more than three tries at an absolute maximum to find your character's match.

⌦ If we run out of time to complete the RP with you by the end of the RP summer, we will PM or VM your wand result to you, provided you have posted in this thread and responded to our efforts to interact with you.

⌦ If you have any questions, feel free to PM Felixir or one of the Diagon Alley Proprietors and they'll try to answer your questions as quickly and efficiently as they can.

⌦ Have fun!

With the second wand-trying underway, Zeke commenced his keeping an eye out for any early signs of a match... noting again how the girl aimed at his windows. Within a few moments, however, he couldn't take note of much at all, because suddenly... darkness. Or smokiness, to be a little more exact. Zeke coughed slightly, having inhaled some of the smoke in his surprise, and then drew his own wand.

"Yes, and the wand likes you too, I see. Well, in a manner of speaking," Zeke added, because actually, he could no longer see anything. He gave his own wand a twirl, and all too soon it began hoovering up the worst of the smoke, giving them some more visibility so that they might finish this transaction a little easier. He did prefer to see what was going on, especially as money was yet to change hands. "Now then! Congratulations are in order, and I have a little information for you."

Information about the wand, naturally. And useful information it would be.

"Your new wand is eleven and a half inches of strong walnut, and the core is dragon heartstring. Swedish Short-Snout, to be precise. A very handsome wood, known for its unusual versatility and adaptability. It tends to match with highly intelligent over-achievers." Did Zeke suspect that that applied to this customer? Hard to say in only a short meeting, but he did tend to trust the wands' judgement. "Good for cleansing and purification spells, and for reversal magic, known to amplify focus and intent, and will perform any task its owner desires, if the wielder is brilliant enough." Which, well, could be disastrous depending on the characteristics of the owner, but the wands would choose who they wanted to choose. "Dragon heartstring cores have a lot of oomph and raw power, and lend themselves to quick mastery of new spells. A very versatile core, much like the wood. You'll find that powerful spells, the ones which require a bit of oomph, will come easier than subtle, delicate spellwork, so more intricate spells may be more difficult. I'm happy to report also that dragon heartstring wands bond closely to their owners."

And that, as they said, was that. Plenty to be getting on with. "The wand by itself will be 10 galleons, and we also have a range of other products and services that might interest you today."

Sydney would have loved to see the look on everyone's faces, but the smoke prevented her from doing so. Instead she listened for a reaction, noting the wandmaker's slight cough.

The more she heard about her new wand, the more she liked it. Highly intelligent over-achiever? That sounded quite a bit like her. She had no doubt she would be brilliant enough to make the wand perform any spell she wanted… once she actually learned some spells. The core was interesting too! She liked the idea of powerful spells and the wand bonding closely to her. She wouldn't want someone to be able to take her wand easily!

As she processed the information the Wanamaker gave her, her thoughts turned to the dragon that provided her wand core. ”Was the Swedish Shortsnout still alive when its heartstring was harvested?” she asked. Probably not, she guessed, though it was interesting to think about.

Sydney's eyes darted about the shop, taking in the array of products. She considered buying a bundle, but leather holsters seemed a bit boring. She wanted something more distinctive, like a dragonhide holster. Maybe a Swedish Shortsnout, to match her wand core? Or- ooh, an alligator holster! That was probably the closest she'd find to a swamp monster. ”I'd like some wand polish, conditioning oil, and an alligator hip holster, please,” she replied.

And, of course, he had expected a few extra purchases. Zeke smiled, nodded, and retrieved the velvet holster and the tub of wand polish. "That's 18 galleons, 8 sickles, then - ah, excellent," he added, seeing the money already on offer. He bundled up the items, took the coins from the boy, and dropped them into his cash register, before looking up with another smile. "Thank you very much. The best of luck to you and your new wand."

Johnny beamed. It seemed that he had gotten his maths correct. His parents would be very pleased to hear about this. “Thank you too,’’ he said quite enthusiastically, pushing a bit of his curly hair out of his eyes. The purchases were collected and they were hugged to his chest. Yep! Jon was going to take very good care of his latest belongings!

“Bye! It’s been lovely shopping here! I’ll be back for sure for more supplies!” Giving the Shopkeeper a wave, he bounced back over to his parents. Hopefully his sisters didn’t have him waiting for long. As much as he loved this shop, Jon was excited to move about in Diagon Alley.

That still held true right now, though he couldn't quite help from wincing ever so slightly. With some difficulty, Zeke turned away from the shelves, making a mental note to check over the wands that had fallen once he was done here.

"Yes, I think you are quite right," Zeke said, nodding in agreement and putting the lid back on the box. "Not to worry. That does narrow things down somewhat." After considering the shelves for a moment (and hoping the one he was thinking of wasn't in that pile on the floor) Zeke stooped down to pluck a wand box out from where it lived in a tucked away corner. He returned to the girl and smiled at her, offering the second wand that sat inside its box. "Let's see how you get along with this one."
Before Tiffany took the second wand, she found herself pondering what the shopkeeper had said to her brother about being honest and compassionate. She knew he was a big ol' softie even if he loved to tease her and Ari. And then there was Ari, getting a wand with a Laurel core, how ironic considering their mom's name. And interesting about the fire spells, considering their brother's first wand interaction. It made her curious to see what this wand would do and how it might connect to her family.

Biting her lip as she watched him ignore the pile on the floor to get her another wand, she blinked. "I'm really sorry ... if there's anything ..." She could almost hear her mum reminding her to pick up after herself. Gingerly she picked up the second one, wondering how she'd know if the wand chose her. Would she get butterflies ? Or some other sign?

Before she could question it any longer, stars emitted from the tip, glowing and hovering for around thirty seconds before dissolving into the air. "Does that mean this is the one?" she asked curiously of the shopkeeper, looking back at her parents and siblings for reassurance.

Aaron smiled when Johnny's wand selected him and he paid for it along with getting some polish too. And then it seemed Ari was all set with hers too, which left only one to go ... Such immense fatherly pride watching each of his children get their first wand. What a shame that parents weren't allowed to watch their kids get sorted too, but he knew they'd receive an owl with their results. He shook his head at his wife's delusion in thinking Floreans would be quiet during the summer, but he wasn't about to argue with that. Also, one can't get upset with ice cream in front of them.

Zeke was prepared for the question; it was one he got a lot, either through concern about the creatures they harvested from or just from plain curiosity. "No, it wasn't. The heartstring is taken after the dragons have passed." His phrasing was deliberate; the dragons weren't killed for the making of the wands, or at least, he personally didn't use cores obtained that way. But that was a whole different conversation.

He gave her a smile, said, "Absolutely," and went to collect the items that the girl wanted. When he returned to the counter, he bundled everything up. "That's 26 galleons 8 sickles in total then, please."

"Oh no, not to worry at all. No need to apologise," Zeke said, giving a reassuring smile and a wave of his hand to indicate it was perfectly fine. "We see all kinds of magical reactions in here. All par for the course."

What mattered most in that moment was narrowing down their choices and finding the right wand for the girl - that is, arranging things so that the right wand would be in a place to choose her.

Aaaand... yes? Yes. There it was, unless Zeke was mistaken (and he prided himself that his mistakes were few and far between, especially where wandlore was concerned). "Yes, that's exactly what it means. Congratulations." Lovely little magical effect there too, if he did say so himself.

"Now then, your wand is eleven and a half inches of unyielding ebony, with an augurey feather core." One of those woods people often wanted to try for the aesthetics if nothing else. Jet black and attractive, and comfortably heavy in the hand to boot. "Ebony has a particularly lustrous reputation in magical combat as well as in transfiguration magic; well-suited to defensive and protective spells, and to dispelling dark magic, and suitable for all elemental magic. An ebony wand may be used for most any purpose, but it can take some time for spells to be mastered, so you'll need to be willing to put in the time and the work." But Zeke wasn't too worried about that; he doubted the wand would have chosen her if it didn't detect that kind of commitment in the wielder. "Augurey feather wands are very particular about who they choose, but they make for extremely loyal wands. Very hardy too. Wands with this core also become especially responsive on any day that rain is due to fall, particularly when casting non-verbal magic." Something to keep in mind for those later years of schooling and beyond. "This core is particularly suited to Divination magic, as well as charms, especially those which silence or raise the alarm."

Well then. That was that. Zeke smiled again. "The wand by itself is 10 galleons, plus anything else you are interested in buying today."

To say he was nervous would be an understatement and he mostly blamed Iris for that. He, who preferred to go into new situations knowing as little as possible so there were no expectations (and no added pressures) had been verbally accosted by his sister's excitement fueled by information she had gathered by a wandlore book written by Ira Banner whose title was lost on him now. Nyle had tried his best to counter her enthusiasm with some of his own (applewood being not just a wandwood nor simply a supporting act for fruit but also a glorious tree with a rich history, folklore and art. It was the most common wood found in mills of the past and even today due to the tough fibrous nature of the wood, for example!) but if there was any force to quiet his self expression it was his sister. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, for the record, just a reflection of Nyle's more passive nature to that of his sister's.

Still, he was glad to be doing his wand fitting without his sister by his side - she was off with papa getting her robes fitted while mum took him to Ollivanders - as it relieved some of pressure and anxiety. Some, not nearly enough to have his hands not twitching like a flutterby bush as they hung loosely by his sides though. Mum had agreed to wait for him outside after leaving him a kiss upon his forehead that did give him just the tiniest boost of confidence to step inside the infamous shop. Hopefully none had heard his startled squeak as the measuring tape came a whooshing up to him and started elongating and retracting itself up and down his tall-for-his-age gangly frame. Iris probably knew what all these measurements ment, but he for one was relieved to be none the wiser.

"Um...thank you?" he murmured with a subtle bow of the head to the measuring tape after it performed a series of loopy-loops along both his arms and zipped off towards the back of the shop and disappeared out of sight among the stacks of boxes

She’d often heard that receiving a wand was the most exciting day of a newly turned eleven-year-old’s life and she had no doubt that that was true but it didn’t stop the nervous Flitterbies in her tummy as she stepped into the tiny shop behind another student in preparation to receive one of her own.

She’d insisted, despite very much wanting her sister's company, that Anna should probably wait for her outside lest there be no room in the shop to even flick a wand. There was also the guilt that Anna could be doing literally anything other than accompanying the youngest Bowen for her school supply shopping of which she was sure Anna had seen enough of by now but perhaps rather selfishly Simi didn’t want her to leave.

The minute she had cleared the doorframe she was accosted by the magical measuring tape which wound its way around her body, up to her head, to the extent of her finger tips, all whilst she stood there a little concerned to move in case she mess up its flow. “Can I move now?” she asked politely, thoughts whirring over how one of these could be useful for her crafting projects.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

The next chapter in his life was about to begin and he could not wait! Hogwarts, here he came! Right after the summer vacation was over, of course. In the meanwhile, Viano was enjoying the time with his family. So much had happened recently: his papas had gotten married, his last name had officially been changed to Thanatos-Misra, the twins were moving on to other things after graduating and best of all? Vesper was here with him to help him get his wand.

{“A magical measuring tape!’’} Vi marvelled in Italian to himself. {“Does it really help with selecting a wand or is it just there for amusement?”} The little guy was genuinely curious and couldn’t keep his gaze from being fixated on the thing. After some time, the tape was free of the person before him. {“My turn!"} Since Vi would be needing Vesp after securing his wand because she was holding onto all the money, he turned towards the seating area and gave her a hearty wave. Only then did the eleven year old skip off to meet the tape which promptly began measuring his fingers individually. He found it oddly funny and couldn’t keep from chuckling.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

She didn't want to go to Diagon Alley. To be clear, Rae didn't want to be anywhere near Mrs. Birch, her mean children, or the bustling streets that disoriented her. Things were confusing enough without the woman insisting they go school shopping for a school she didn't want to go to and if Justin--the woman's eldest son--could be believed, getting a wand would be the end of her accidental magic.

Accident or not, the little girl was quite fond of the way it showed up just when she needed it and worried that a wand would make things unnecessarily difficult. She would have to learn real spells and if she didn't...would she never be able to use magic again?

When it was her turn, Rae had to be nudged up to the measuring tape. She'd seen the way it zipped around those who'd gone before her and was...grudgingly intrigued, but there was no time to be impressed. They'd taken her there to steal her magic and she was too small to do anything about it. While Mrs. Birch had made insistences to the contrary, Rae had had enough experience with lying adults to not believe a word out of her prim and proper mouth.

Stepping up, Rae extended her hands and watched the tape work, scowling at the thing because she KNEW what it was trying to do. Seconds later, it was gone and her dread intensified.

This was all new to Tea, but she wasn’t nervous at all. She had even begged off from mum or Adair accompanying her, but they’d only agreed once Uncle Cyan had offered to chaperone her. Uncle Cyan who Tea secretly considered her personal lawyer and therefore she had entrusted him and Eilonwy with her precious skateboard as she had walked further into the wand shop and the queue of kids waiting for their own wands.

The smol brunette had whiled away the wait with thinking of the latest moves she wanted to try once she was done with school shopping and Uncle Cyan had dropped her off on his way back to work, but the wait proved to not be toooo long anyhow. Not long enough that she’d been able to visualize a complete trick, anyway, and she switched her attention to the magical measuring tape as it began zipping around her. She wasn’t exactly sure why it needed to know the distance between her eyes or the length of her toes, but it was at least interesting. And tickled a little.

After what seemed like an eternity of whining and pouting to go to Ollivanders, it was time! This fine summer day was when she would be stepping inside the wand shop again. But what made this day extra special was that she was not there to not watch her brother get his wand and be jealous of him. This time, after months of waiting since she turned 11 back in November, Ariel Scamander was finally going to be matched with a wand of her own.

Since she had seen the whole the-wand-chooses-you process with Noah, the fiery redhead skipped inside with a large amount of confidence with her mum. There was a look of determination on her face, and determined is what she was: she was certain her wand would find her much faster than Noah; it had taken him trying five different wands, and Ariel was sure hers would select her right away. Those details she shared with her mum, loud enough for everyone to overhear, while they waited in the queue.

Getting carried away in yapping, the sudden appearance of the magical tape caught her by surprise, though her eyes soon followed it like a snitch as it zipped and zapped around her. An array of expressions soon became apparent: pure puzzlement when it measured her feet, crosseyed when the length of her nose was measured, fits of giggling when it weaved itself around her. She wiggled her fingers when it moved on to measuring those. She was having so much fun with the odd magical thing that she was a little disappointed when it flew away.

Zeke had been doing some last minute tidying up of his shelves (otherwise known as unnecessarily straightening up the stacks of boxes) when his measuring tape came to find him, giving him a surprise hug around the head. So affectionate. They had come so far since his first year (or... years) in the shop.

Quick on its heels... figurative heels of course... came the parchment with its measurements. Zeke plucked it from the air and leaned around the shelves to look out onto the shop floor, where he saw a customer waiting. He bustled out to meet him, glancing down to consult the measurements as he went.

"Hello there," he said, his voice bright and his expression brighter. "Let's see what we can do for you." Zeke already had a good idea of what they were looking for, and, with a smile, he excused himself and went to find one candidate he had in mind.

In a few moments he was back, and opening the wand box so that he might offer the wand inside to the boy. "All I need you to do is take this wand, give it a wave, and let me know what you think. Sound good?"

Having finished with one customer, it was swiftly onto the next. By this time the tape measure had finished up and was seeking out its next victim subject, but the parchment with the measurements was right here and waiting for the wandmaker.

"Hello, hello!" Zeke greeted the girl, taking the list of measurements and casting his expert eye over them. "Let's see if we can't find you a wand, yes?"

Yes, yes, all seemeed to be in order. Zeke mulled over some of the numbers for a moment, drifting towards one of the shelves almost without realising. He looked up again in time to pluck a box from the stacks, before returning to his young customer with it.

"Now, all you need to do," he said, as he set down the parchment and opened up the wand box, "is give this a wave, and we'll see what happens. Be sure to tell me if it feels right, or if you think we ought to try another." With a smile, Zeke held out the box, so that the girl might take the wand and test it out.

As was typical for the season, once Zeke finished with one customer it was immediately on to the next. He slid closed his cash register with a satisfying ding! and strode across the shop to where the next customer stood.

"Let's see what we have here," he said, by way of greeting, plucking his enchanted parchment from the air as it floated to meet him, and looking over the measurements that his tape measure had collected. "Very good... just one moment."

And just a moment it was; Zeke strode over to one of the shelves, took down a box from a high-up shelf, and returning to the customer. "Ready? Just give it a wave, and we'll see what's what," he said, opening up the box and holding it out, offering the wand to the boy to try.

If Zeke knew that this particular customer was less than enthused about buying a wand, then... well, it wouldn't really change anything. All kinds came through these doors, so eventually one or two who dreaded the acquisition of a wand would be among them.

He was wearing his customary smile as he approached this girl, having just finished with another customer. "Hello, there," Zeke greeted her, and picked up his parchment, which was covered in numbers and measurements. "Let's see, let's see..."

After a moment, the wandmaker nodded to himself. "Excuse me for just a moment," he said to the girl, before ducking into the back room and the shelves that lived there. Then he was back, wand box in hand. "You know what to do? Just give it a wave, and tell me what you think," he told her, opening up the box and offering the wand the resided inside of it.

It was the work of only a few moments, narrowing down the possibilities to a few prime candidates, and Zeke mulled over the numbers for a moment as he considered the best possible combinations. Either way, Zeke was as genial as ever as he stepped up to greet this next customer.

"Hello there," he said, taking up his list of measurements, recorded by his trusty parchment (and, of course, the measuring tape). "Let's see if we can't find you a wand today, yes?"

Zeke scanned through the list of measurements, 'hm'ing and nodding to himself, before looking up again with a smile. "Perfect. Just one moment, please." With that, he strode off to one of his shelves, his eyes raking the boxes stacked there, before he found what he wanted and carefully slid one of the wand boxes out.

"You know what to do?" he asked the girl as he returned, opening up the box and offering her the wand inside. "Just give it a wave and tell me what you think, and we'll go from there."

Ariel couldn't stay disappointed when the wand man made an appearance. It would have been silly to be glum about a measuring tape of all things when she was about to get a wand of her own, of course. So she flashed the man her biggest and brightest of smiles and gave him her sweetest, "Hi, Mr. Wand Man!" she stood on her tiptoes in a poor attempt to see what had been scrawled on that parchment of his.

But she may never know what words were on the parchment for the man had darted away. When the man darted away, she had half a mind to run after him and proceed to tell him that he was being rude for keeping secrets and not sharing what he had been hmming over, but she managed to hold her tongue when she caught her knowing mum giving her The Look™. So she just stood there, rocking back and forth on her toes and heels, trying her best to be the patient girl she was not.

Her brown eyes widened with pure glee when the wand man returned and offered the box. Before he even finished his instructions, Ariel had already grabbed hold of the wand. "I know exactly what to do, Mr. Wand Man!" she exclaimed, oozing with confidence.

So she gave it a grandiose twirl... Nothing.

A nervous laugh escaped her throat as she gave it another go... Nothing.

Tears started to well up in her eyes as her breathing grew heavy. She gave the wand a series of waves, each becoming more aggressive... Several boxes suddenly flew off one of the shelves, some making contact with a wall, others smacking unsuspecting customers.

She let go of the wand instantly as frustrated tears began to stream down her face. This. Was. Not. Supposed. To. Happen. Like. This.

She didn't reply to his greeting, something that would certainly earn her a telling off when they left the shop but Rae never thought that far ahead. Instead, her mind remained stubbornly on her present discomfort, namely the man trying to steal her magic. It figured he would appear pleasant; that was usually how it went. Wide smiles, animated voices and a lot of talking to her like she didn't understand anything. To his credit, the man refrained from a few of the cliches she'd grudgingly come to know but it didn't get him off the hook quite yet.

Give it a wave?

Was that the secret switch that made everything go away? Rae stared up at him sceptically when he handed her the wand, growing uneasy at the strange energy she felt radiating off it. It seemed...almost angry to be in her hand, like it wanted to burn a hole through her palm to make its escape.

The longer she held onto it the hotter it burned, its unwarranted resentment of the girl soon too difficult to ignore. Panicked, Rae shoved the wand back to the man, her eyes wide with terror as they locked onto the vengeful thing.

"I don't want that one!" She insisted as her voice raised in pitch. Rae took an extra step back, being sure to create some distance between her and the wand that had obviously not chosen her. Mrs. Birch's tutting and scowls did nothing to change her mind. That wand didn't like her and she didn't like it either.

The sound of warm footsteps approaching drew the caramel blond's attention and the anticipation did not leave him disappointed when Nyle saw that it was the wandmaker himself. Nyle knew of the gentleman, impossible not to know something with Iris for a sister, and had even seen him on occasion during previous trips to the Alley and that one time papa had needed some extra polish and cleaning of his wand after the incident. "O-Okay!" he chirped eagerly, watching the man that had just been approaching now pivot towards the expanse of boxes. A couple of questions he had had about the condition of the wood to papa's wand (some formed before arriving today and a couple more on the spot) were completely Obliviated from his mind, however, as soon as the man addressed him and presented the boy with the open wand box.

"Oh wow," he whispered, his eyes widening as all ten of his fingers wiggled towards the fine craftsmanship. It looked nothing like mum's or papa's wand, which was to be expected because all wands had their own unique persona and aesthetic. He thought he would be able to identify the wood upon first glance, but he soon realized that without leaves and bark patterns he was not nearly as proficient as he thought he was. Stupidly, because of his mild daze, Nyle interpreted the wave as a literal physical wave at the wand. A misunderstanding he realized when it, obviously, did not respond and Nyle looked back up at the wandmaker to see the man waiting expectantly still. "Yeah, totally. Sounds fantastic," he blurted out with a couple of eager nods. Nyle took a moment to rub his nose with his palm for good luck before reaching forwards and plucking the wand from the box using only the tips of his fingers, as if it were made from fragile glass that might shatter if too much pressure were applied to it. A deep breath later and the handle had slid into his palm with his fingers coiled tenderly around it.

It may not have been necessary, but Nyle decided to take a little preemptive hop backwards from the wandmaker just in case the wand were to have a not-so-great response to his wielding of it. Despite having no real expectations, he had thought that he would feel some sort of energy from the wand once it was in his hand ... or at least something more than phantom echoes of sweaty palms, the sound of someone smacking their lips while they chewed gum, and a flash of a quill being set aflame. Pursing his lips, he drew a large 'n' shape in the air and immediately felt a sensation like he was trying to hold on to a gust of wind. Fingers clenching the handle more firmly, something began rapidly creeping out from the tip of the wand and spilled on to the floor while coiling into a pile of flora. A pile of dried up morning glory vines (not bindweeds!), to be precise - you could tell especially by the shape of the seed pods and the shriveled heart shape leaves.

"Um...I think we are on the right trajectory, sir," he nodded upon wetting his lips and hopping forward to return the wand to its box.

Having never accompanied any of her older sisters for their wand ceremonies, Simona was unsure of what to expect as she watched the measuring tape whisk off to the next in line. She took the final few tentative steps forward as the previous customer left, coming flush with the counter as the Wandmaker spoke.

“Hello” she smiled politely, rising up on the balls of her feet to make her that tiny bit taller. “Yes please and thank you” she added, as if he was doing her a favour and not his job. She had been taught manners regardless, they cost her nothing.

There was a slight hesitance in touching the wand considering she had seen the few students before her not succeed on their first try. It had filled her mind with a million scenarios - of the ‘what ifs’ and ‘buts’. What if there was no right wand for her? What if she picked something and it wasn’t the right choice? It wouldn’t be like she knew what the ‘right’ choice was anyway but it was still something that could happen. As soon as they had arrived in Diagon Alley, Nathaniel had taken off, ignoring the calls from his parents and Olive and Ezra. He had been waiting forever for the day he finally got his own wand, and he refused to waste any more time taking a leisurely stroll down the alley to the wand shop. So what if he had to shove past people and earn a few side-eyes and glares? It would all be worth it once he held that wand in his hands.

He pushed open the shop door and scowled at the sight of the line. It wasn't a surprise that there was one, but it was still annoying. He didn't want to wait. Summer would practically be over by the time it was his turn.

He totally wasn't over-exaggerating or anything.

But he took his place anyway, eyeing the shelves while he waited. They held his attention quite well as he wondered what kinds of wands were inside each one, and which shelf his wand might come from, and what were the chances he could go over and grab one himself and find his wand that way?

With all these thoughts swirling in his head, Nathan hardly noticed how the queue moved forward or when his family arrived and Olive took her place in line or when the measuring tape came over to him to take his measurements.

And just a moment it was; Zeke strode over to one of the shelves, took down a box from a high-up shelf, and returning to the customer. "Ready? Just give it a wave, and we'll see what's what," he said, opening up the box and holding it out, offering the wand to the boy to try.

His sister’s words of encouragement always helped. He had flashed Vesper a thumbs up just before it was his turn to meet the shopkeeper. He had completely forgotten to ask Vesper if it was normal to be nervous before one got fitted for a wand. Yes, he was currently experiencing quite the case of nervousness mixed with excitement. He forgot about his feelings right now and watched with interest as parchment fluttered toward the man. Magic truly was spectacular!

Viano nodded, feeling that if he did speak, he would end up squeaking due to his nerves. While waiting for the shopkeeper to get back to him, he zoned in on the measuring tape doing its thing but obviously, to another person. It was quite something to watch. But before he knew it, he was being offered a wand. The little guy could not help but grin as he took it. The was an almighty sound, much like a firecracker exploding quickly followed by a shower of pure white sand showering down on him. Maybe even on the shopkeeper, he didn’t know yet because poor Vi was busy shaking his head like a soaked dog in an attempt to get the sand out of his hair.

“S-sorry,’’ he said apologetically. “Didn’t mean for that to happen.” Vi shot a worried look at the shopkeeper then at Vesp. He’d need her to help get all the sand from his hair for sure.

Also, this wand was no good. It was placed back into its box.

This. Was. Not. Supposed. To. Happen. Like. This.

What looked like impatience, Zeke was happy to write off as simple eagerness. It was key for him to be the pinnacle of patience with every customer who came through his shop, after all, and plenty could be forgiven. "Very well. Away you go." He smiled indulgently as the girl tested out the wand, a smile which wavered only when he saw the unmistakeable signs of disappointment.

Uh oh.

Zeke was not quite fast enough to intervene before the insistent wand-waving causes a couple of boxes to fly free from his shelves, and he wince slightly - admittedly more for the wellbeing of the wands themselves, though he sent apologetic smiles at the customers who'd received a bonk on the head or what have you.

The wand boxes would be collected by an apprentice or similar, or Zeke himself would see to them - but only once they were done here. Tears were not to be ignored... though he thought it wise not to make a point of mentioning them either. Tact, and everything.

"Not to worry, not to worry at all," he said to the girl, in a reassuring sort of manner. "We'll find your wand, I'm sure of it." He held out the box so the first wand might be replaced, all the while scanning his shelves. Ah, maybe...

Stretching up high to pull down a second wand box, he nudged off the lid and offered this one now. "Maybe this one will suit you better. Give it a try?"

That wand didn't like her and she didn't like it either.

... Huh.

The longer they stood there, looking at each other, the less certain Zeke became. Not about the wand, or the customer, per se. More about his presumption. He did get some kids come through here who didn't know a lot of English, or were hard of hearing, though often the chaperoning adult would step in at around this point to let him know. Zeke cast a curious glance towards said adult, then back to the girl again...

... just as the wand was thrust back towards him. Her exclamation suggested that she could hear and understand him, so Zeke supposed he was probably dealing with simple reluctance. Or fear. That look she gave him definitely suggested no small amount of fear.

"That's alright," he said, in his most patient, reassuring manner. He set the bond back in its box and put it to one side. Evidently, it had reacted in some unfavourable way, but he didn't really need to ask exactly what; the rejection was enough. "Sometimes it takes a few tries, but we'll find one that cooperates with you."

Zeke considered the wands in his shop for a moment, then strode behind the counted and climbed up his sliding ladder to take one down from one of the higher shelves. In a moment he was back, and again offering the wand inside the box, and tried for his best reassuring tone. "Let's see how you get on with this one."

If there was something Zeke appreciated, it was a little wonder and reverence upon setting eyes on a wand. All his years in the business and he still felt that way himself... though perhaps he was a little biased, given a lot of these wands were made his his own hand. Nevertheless, it was a fine craft, if he did say so himself. (And he did.)

That little wave at the wand, though. Endearing. Enough to make him want to chuckle, but he refrained, given his whole policy on not laughing at his customers, or making them feel laughed at. Or really doing anything that might ruin that special moment.

Oh, now that was interesting. Plant-life was a fun one... though Zeke himself was, naturally, more familiar with trees. "I think so too," he replied, putting the lid back on the box and setting it aside for cleaning. As magical displays went, that had certainly been more promising than nothing at all, but it didn't seem quite there. And, of course, the customer knew best.

He didn't even need much time to consider his next option; right away Zeke had crossed to another shelf, quickly found the box he was looking for, and slid it out. "Let's see how this one suits you," he said, opening up the box as he returned to the boy, and again offering the wand inside.

She was starting to regret not insisting that Anna join her for this process, her eldest sister always seemed to have an answer for reassurance.

She supposed that the most important thing be that she was comfortable with using the wand. At least that was what she was telling herself as she plucked the wand out from the box and curled her fingers around it only to be disappointed by the lack of sparks. “Am I supposed to feel a connection?” she inquired, physically or spiritually she might add. “Because I don’t feel anything yet.” She flicked her wrist in a swirl, a sort of mediocre puff of what she assumed should be confetti dribbling from the end.

“Is that.. good?” She was hoping that he could tell her, the Wandmaker knew best after all.

If he noticed the hesitation (... he did, as he usually did), Zeke did not remark upon it, only continued to hold out the box in his patient manner. He couldn't read minds, of course, but he knew it was a big moment. Those came with big feelings, or big thoughts, and could not be rushed.

"Often people feel it right away," he said in response to her question after she had picked up the wand. "It's different for everyone, but a lot of people describe a kind of warmth." Zeke suspected they would need to try another, even before the wand was tested, though he also knew it was not unheard of for the magical display to indicate that they had found the right one, even if the feeling itself wasn't quite... there. Sometimes it even depended on the wood, or the core, if they were the particularly detached types. But, really, it seemed to depend more on the witch or wizard.

The lacklustre confetti, however, pretty much confirmed Zeke's suspicions. "It is good, in a sense," he said, even as he held out the box for the wand to be returned. "Because it helps point us in the right direction. I think you ought to try another."

One he already had in mind, in fact. Once his hands were free, Zeke strode to another shelf and drummed his fingers along it until he found the wand in question. He slid it out, and returned to his young customer. "Here we are. Let's see how you get on with this." He opened the box, and presented the wand inside.

Good things come to those who wait, including wands. Gradually, Zeke worked his way through his customers, ringing each up and moving swiftly onto the next. Before too long, it was this young man's turn.

"Hello there," he greeted the boy, smiling as he scooped up the parchments on which his measurements had been recorded. "Let's see, let's see... very good. If you'll give me just one more moment..."

With that, Zeke was off again, crossing the shop floor to take down one specific box from the shelves. He had to stretch up onto his tiptoes to get it, as it was really not high enough to warrant a summoning charm or the ladder. In any case, he didn't like to summon boxes out of the stacks. The prospect of an avalanche was a little off-putting.

Returning to his customer, Zeke opened up the wand box and held it out, offering the wand inside. "You know what do you? Quick wave should do it, then tell me what you think." And, of course, they'd more than likely see an obvious sign, either way.

Goodness gracious. Zeke liked to be prepared for the actions of some of these misbehaving wands, but that one did take him slightly by surprise. It was always the loud noises that got him, probably because he was usually braced for things like fire, which were infinitely more alarming.

Coughing slightly and brushing sand from his own hair, and then the front of his waistcoat, Zeke shook his head. "Oh, not to worry, not to worry at all." These things happened. Fairly often, in his line of work, in fact. He drew his own wand and gave it a little flick, clearing up the worst of the sand from the floor and the two of them - and from the box he still held, into which the recently-tested wand was now being placed.

"Now then, let me see..." After a moment's consideration, Zeke held up a finger by way of excusing himself, then disappeared into the back room. He emerged a few seconds later with another wand box. "Let's try this one, shall we?" Again he held it open, so that the boy might take the wand.

Vesper had the experience of this sort of silly behaviour from wands? Viano had quite forgotten to ask her and now he was wishing he had. It would have been nice to be reassured that making sand, of all things, rain down was okay. But the words Vesp sent his way were still helpful and he gave her a tiny smile of gratitude. It also helped that the shopkeeper did not seem mad at him. The guy probably had seen worse happenings from clueless pre-teens to be too phased about most things.

Viano heaved an audible sigh of relief when the sand was cleared away. “Grazie. Thank you,’’ he mumbled, very much embarrassed. His pink-tainted cheeks would attest to that embarrassment that was being felt. But there was a new wand to try now and Vi cautiously took this one. He should had guessed he needn’t hold his breath while giving the wand a wave; it felt very comfortable in his hand, as though it had been fashioned just for him. This time, there was no sand. There was nothing but the soft russell of a breeze that blew through the place, gently shifting the hair on his head. “I think this is the one.”

Glancing over at Vesp, Vi gave her a grin of reassurance. She had been right! This try had been better!.

In that moment, he made the link between the sand and the breeze: they reminded him of the beach he once lived next to in Italy. Yes, this boy missed the place but he loved living here in the UK with his adopted family a lot more.

He had another one? Rae couldn't fathom taking a second wand in hand, allowing it to finish what the first had started. Once was enough. Her own, accidental magic had never burned her--had only burned her once--and she'd never felt such vitriol radiating from within herself. If they insisted she go to school, the least they could do was let her continue learning magic on her own terms. Things were fine until the introduction of this whole...wand business.

Rae tried to use Mrs. Birch as a shield when the man descended the ladder with the new wand but the woman was having none of it. She forced Rae back to her earlier spot with the sharp insistence that she put off her nonsense.

Looking back at the woman, it was clear she had no choice but to try. Sucking in a deep breath, Rae turned to face the man who was doing his very best to make her believe he wasn't out to off her with his magic sticks. If she must face it, then she would.

She would go out bravely, ensuring none could say that in her last moments she, Ruth Anaya Elliot, had cowered and trembled. Though her chin wobbled, the little girl pulled for her bravest and most defiant face as she took hold of the wand. She braced for the searing pain but a peculiar thing happened then. Brilliant splashes of light erupted from its tip, swirling around the girl in a fanciful dance of light that mesmerised her.

Rae stood transfixed, a gentle warmth flooding her small frame and stirring an involuntary giggle. What a lovely thing. "Can I keep it?"

Text Cut: old man...er...Mr. Zeke, sir!

Was he a little disappointed that it had not been a perfect match on the first attempt? Perhaps a little, but more than that sentiment was the relief that he had not been a complete dud for the selected wand - sort of would embarrassing for himself and for the wandmaker, wouldn't it? Though Nyle would very much humbly disagree with the customer knows best mentality - unless that customer was his sister because she just seemed to know everything.

Nodding in agreement with Mr. Wandmaker, the little blond reached his foot forwards and poked at the pile of shriveled flora with his toe and was surprised to see it turn to dust immediately. So surprise, in fact, that he jumped backwards and let out a nervous squeak of sorts. "Sorry...to...um...dirty your floor, sir. I could help tidy it up after...along with w-whatever mess I might make." He really needed to get his nervous energy in check, but the feeling that was most prominent now was the wonderment of magic. Even with that wand not suiting him, he had still been capable of conjuration magic! Was that because it was the wood or the core that fancied him most? Were such results even contingent on a single factor? Maybe he should have listened a bit more to Iris share her readings - a bookworm traits thar she certainly shared with mum but Nyle had not quite inherited.

"Thank you," he smiled as the man returned and offered him a second want to give a whirl. A little twitch of the hand cause his palm to brush against the box itself and with that came a feeling of warmth that had not been present with the previous. Swallowing and wetting his lips, his fingers coiled around the wand with a little more confidence this time - less a piece of delicate glass and more a fluffy chick - and that warmth began to feel familiar. It was as confusing as it was comforting and for a brief moment he glanced up at the man as if the bloke could read his thoughts and offer some exposition. "...it feels nice," he mumbled to break the silence as he slid the handle into his palm and pivoted once again so he wasn't shooting off underaged and underdeveloped magic towards the man doing his best to match aspiring youths with their wands. Nyle cleared his throat a couple more times, an echo of vines and sunflowers settling in the back of his thoughts for a few moments before it the blurred memory was gone with his next exhale.

Performing the same 'n' shaped wand movement as before, Nyle planted his feet firmly against the wooden floor of the shop as he felt a surge of something woosh through his body from his chest to his arm and through the tips of his fingers and into the wand he held. To his delight, vines once again began flowing forth from the tip of his wand - morning glories again and NOT dead ones - and his eyes widened. Just before he was about to cheer for himself and thank the wandmaker for his diligent work, something much less to his delight: the flora coiling back towards him at a rapid rate and wrapping around him as if he had cast Incarcerous on himself. Now his eyes were widening for an entirely different reason and then, the true cherry on top, the boy losing his balance entirely and falling onto his side while the leaves and trumpet shaped blossoms tickled him. All this left him with one question on his young mind...was this a GOOD thing or a BAD thing?! It didn't feel like the worst of things and the movement of the flora reminded him of tickle fights before bedtime...so...well, the wandmaker would know best!

"...hehehe....hehehe...hahahaha..hahahaha...s-s-st-st-stooooo-stooop....hahahaha....ple-pleeee-please...hehehe...hahahaha...."

"Hello, hello," he greeted the girl, then consulted the parchment, running a finger down the list of measurements. "Let's see what we have here..." It was the work of only a few moments, narrowing down the possibilities to a few prime candidates, and Zeke mulled over the numbers for a moment as he considered the best possible combinations. "Wonderful! Give me just a moment..."

And he went off to the shelves, hunting for a particular box. Finding it, he brought it down, and returned to the girl. "Now, just give this a wave, and let me know what you think," he said, opening up the box and offering the wand inside.
Once the measuring tape had gone off to do its work on other kids and, she assumed, passing on whatever information it had gotten from her and every other kid to the shopkeeper, it had left Tea with little to do but wait her turn again. Which she decided to while away with watching the other kids getting their wands, along with checking to make sure her skateboard was still safe and waiting for her with her uncle and cousin. She knew Uncle Cyan wouldn’t abscond with it, but Eilonwy was still ickle and therefore there was the risk she’d try to use it and hurt herself, and she didn’t want that. Things were obviously already chaotic inside the shop that there didn’t need to be a rogue four-year-old on a skateboard added to the mix. Since she trusted that her uncle wouldn’t have left the shop entirely, when he’d promised mum and dad to keep an eye on her.

“Hi!”, she responded to the wandmaker man once he’d addressed her, giving him her most winning smile. Mostly because she’d seen people crying and such and thought he didn’t need the stress. Plus, again, she wasn’t nervous at all. Or, she wasn’t until he’d spoken about seeing what he had there, in regards to whatever that page said. Part of her wanted to know, or at least find out if it said anything weird about her, but he didn’t seem like it said anything bad, so she’d just nodded as he had excused himself.

“Any kind of wave I want?”, she asked once he had returned and held the wand from that particular box out. But she took the wand before he could answer, flicking it in kind of an S-shape as she imagined another trick. Only to widen her eyes as she heard the rattle of skateboard wheels echoing, glancing back again to verify that it wasn’t her own before returning her gaze to the wandmaker man. Was noise a good thing? It wasn’t the type of thing the other kids had happen.

She felt a warmth but it wasn’t from holding the wand for the first time. It was rather from feeling entirely out of her depth in an unfamiliar situation. Had it been easy for her siblings? Had they known right away or was it more of a complex process? She imagined for the extroverts like Anna and Miriam the experience was painless, any wand would have wanted to be wielded by them but for she and possibly Tam, the quiet overthinkers of the family, it was not so simple.

“It just feels like I’m holding a very beautiful stick” she replied. No offense was meant towards the exquisite craftsmanship of the wands, Simona was one to appreciate creativity after all, it was more of a commentary towards the lack of feeling the Wandmaker had explained.

The first result not being successful hadn’t come as much of a disappointment towards the eleven-year-old. Had it been an instant decision she might’ve felt guilty that she hadn’t given other options a go. “Okay.” He knew best and she certainly wasn’t going to argue with expertise. She returned the wand to the box, watching as the Wandmaker wandered back to the shelves and selected another equally as beautiful option for her to give a whirl.

And whirl she did. The warmth spreading down her fingertips and through her arm settling in her core, like the feeling when drinking a warm sugary tea after a rainy wintery day, comforting and familiar. Instead of a lacklustre display of confetti, the wand shot out a beautiful display of primary colour petals into the air which floated softly to the ground and settled on top of her bouncy curls. “Oh. Ohh. Like that sort of feeling?” Her eyes widened in awe as she looked back at the older man.

He smiled indulgently as the girl tested out the wand, a smile which wavered only when he saw the unmistakeable signs of disappointment.

Ariel took a shaky breath as she wiped her tears with the back of her hand, her determination barely holding up against the surge of emotions. She had been so sure her wand would choose her on the first try, just like she'd imagined. Her fiery spirit was dampened but not extinguished. With a small sniffle, she nodded at Mr. Wand Man. Noticing that she had dropped the first wand, she quickly picked it up and put it back into its box. She wanted absolutely nothing to do with that one.

This time, when he handed her the second wand, she took a moment before grabbing it. She didn't want to rush and mess it up again. Her little fingers curled around the new wand, and she stared at it with a mix of hope and apprehension.

"Okay," she said aloud, more so to herself than as a response to the wandmaker. With newfound resolve, she gave the wand a cautious wave, her heart thumping in her chest.

At first, there was silence, but then ... a warm, comforting breeze seemed to swirl around her, ruffling her hair and lifting her spirits. Ariel's eyes widened in wonder as the magic wrapped around her like a soft blanket, filling her with an exhilarating sense of connection. She knew, without a doubt, that this was the one.

Her face broke into the widest grin she'd had all day, her earlier tears forgotten. "Mr. Wand Man, I think this is the one!" she exclaimed, her voice bursting with excitement. She waved it again, more confidently this time, and was rewarded with a shower of golden sparks that danced around the room as she began to skip around the fitting area with delight.

She turned to her mum, her eyes shining with joy. "Mum, look! I did it! I found my wand!"

The earlier mishap with the first wand was already a distant memory. This was exactly how it was supposed to happen, after all. Ariel Scamander had her wand, and it was absolutely perfect.

It really went without saying, but Zeke was a professional. He had long years of experience and knew not to remark on those occurances that his customers were likely self-conscious about - unfavourable magical effects by the unmatched wands being at the top of that list. He simply smiled encouragingly, and definitely made no comment on the flush that was creeping up the boy's face either.

Next thing he knew, they had a match! Delightful stuff. Zeke beamed and, after the boy had glanced towards the girl that had accompanied him, he held out the box for the wand to be replaced again. Just to ring it up, of course. "Wonderful. Really wonderful. You'll be wanting to know all the details now?" Well, either way, that was what was going to happen. This was the fun part, at least for Zeke.

"This wand is eleven and a half inches of pliant spruce, and the core is phoenix feather. Spruce requires a firm, deft hand; it can be a little obstinate at first, seems to think it knows better about which magic it ought to be called upon to produce." Which, well, could be a bit of a nightmare, considering the witch or wizard was meant to be the one calling the shots and casting the magic. "Still, in my experience, spruce only tends to pick those who have the ability to handle it. Once mastered, this wand is a superb helpmate, intensely loyal, and capable of particularly flamboyant and dramatic magic. It is excellent for conjuration and creature magic, but not suitable for the dark arts. Now, the phoenix feather core makes for a wand that can take a while to master." Here, Zeke gave a small, apologetic smile. A difficult to tame wand that required a firm hand was perhaps not ideal when someone wanted to get immediately stuck in with learning and producing magic, but... "However, it's worth the effort. Wands with this core are capable of a great range of magic. Its allegiance is had-won, but this core is powerful and versatile. Defence Against the Dark Arts as a subject tends to come easiest to this wand, and hexes and jinxes are often the easiest spell type to master." All in all, it made for a very interesting pairing with spruce.

"Now then! Will you be wanting anything else today? The wand by itself will cost 11 galleons, but we have a range of other products on offer too."

Zeke had a shrewd impression that this woman - his young customer's chaperone - was not the kind of person to be crossed. He stayed well out of it, naturally, and focused only on the process of fitting the wand. That being his job, and all.

And a job well done too, at that. Second attempt; matched on the second attempt; not too shabby.

If the magical display - a lovely impromptu light show - wasn't indication enough, that little giggle and the question that came with it pretty much sealed the deal. "This wand has chosen you, so yes, absolutely." Well. After it was paid for. But the no-nonsense woman was likely to be dependable on that score.

"So then, a little information about the wand. This is nine and a half inches of whippy holly, with a hippogriff feather core. A holly wand is considered lucky, and is also one of those wands which protects against lightning strikes." Which was, well, fairly handy. "Holly is a protective wood, and this wand is excellent for defensive magic and healing spells, and also for working with creatures and gaining the respect of magical beings. The hippogriff feather core makes this an adaptable wand, so long as it's taken care of. Be sure to treat this wand with respect, or it may backfire at inopportune moments." Ah, if only Zeke had been privy to this particular customer's thoughts on wands prior to this moment. "Wands with this core will not perform dishonourably, and if it is used in a way that it does not like, the magic it produces from then on will be sub-par or even non-existent."

Cheerful as ever, Zeke held out the wand box. "I'll take that for a moment, just to ring it all up," he said. "The wand by itself will be 12 galleons, and we have some other products available, if you're interested."

The offer to help tidy up was exceptionally endearing, in Zeke's opinion. He, of course, was in no rush to do any cleaning just yet. Despite the fact that he bordered on obsessive when it came to keeping things organised and, of course, clean, he seldom cleaned up the detritus of matched or unmatched wands until after his customers had gone on their way. There were naturally some obvious exceptions to that, such as fire, or something like smoke which got in everyone's way, or anything that caused moderate to severe discomfort.

All this to say, he was in no hurry to see to the plant-dust, but he did meet the boy's offer to help with another warm smile. "Oh, there's no need. I do appreciate your offer, of course, but I can get it sorted out in a jiffy once we're done. Not to worry at all."

He, too, was just as eager to see the boy matched with a wand, and watched as he took up the second one to test it. "That's a good sign," he said, with an encouraging nod. Though, really, Zeke was ready to bet almost anything that this would be the right one, even just based on that comment alone.

And... yep. Oh, he was sure of it now, and he was just on the point of making such a declaration when those beautiful vines started to go rogue. Those products of magic that Zeke did make a point of addressing during the wand fitting process? This would be a prime example of that.

"Merlin's beard," he murmured, and drew his own wand just as the boy... went toppling over. Help is on the way, dear! Zeke crouched down beside the boy and, with a wordless wave of his wand, cast a spell to make those vines go still and loosen enough that they might pull him free. "Are you alright, my lad?" Just... well, making sure. Though Zeke was still fairly sure they had a match, he thought it good form to make sure the boy was at least back on his feet before he started spewing wand facts at him.

"Any kind of wave you want," Zeke confirmed, giving a little nod, but by that time the girl already had the wand in hand and was giving it a wave. Fair enough! He appreciated the enthusiasm.

When that noise came, his customer wasn't the only one who turned to look. He did it automatically, perhaps because it rang out so clearly, and glanced towards the shop window even though they it sounded much closer. Then he looked back to his customer, and understood.

Considering the wand for a moment, Zeke drummed his fingers idly on the side of the empty wand box. He'd noticed the skateboard being looked after over on the other side of his shop, so it seemed to him that it was certainly an effect which reflected the girl's personality. Still, it was a subtle enough sign that he didn't like to assume a match based on that alone. So... "What do you think?" he asked the girl. "Does it feel like the right wand, or would you like to try another?"

The next wand, however, seemed to be a success. In fact, Zeke was promptly certain of it; the girl's reaction pretty much sealed the deal. "Yes, exactly like that." Obviously he couldn't feel what she did in that moment, but still, he knew. He beamed in that was he always did when they found a match, and held out the wand box again, so it might be returned. Only temporarily, of course.

"This wand is eleven and three quarter inches of supple birch, with a unicorn hair core. Birch is particularly well suited to healing magic - doubly so with this core - and it is exemplary with spells considered 'good', or positive." Though that, frankly, was generally subjected. Still, people tended to understand what he meant, or they would soon find out for themselves once they got underward with learning magic. "You'll find that protection and defensive spells will come easily, and it's also well-suited to cleansing magic and water spells, as well as binding and warding magic. Birch tends to choose insightful individuals, and those who are excellent at trying new things, so it's a good wand for learning new spells." Not to mention, birch owners tended to be creative, and to greatly appreciate nature. Zeke couldn't help but wonder if the wand had found such an owner here, what with the petals she had produced. "Unicorn hair wands are very faithful, and these wands are one of the least likely to fluctuate or experience blockages in their magic. Well suited to charms and transfigurations, excellent for healing spells. This core is more in tune with subtle and delicate magic, and while they're not always the most powerful, they're very consistent and reliable."

And that was that! Really, quite a lovely combination, birch and unicorn. "The wand by itself will be 9 galleons. We have some other products too, if there's anything else you're interested in today."

Patient as ever, Zeke waited for the girl to collect herself before trying the next wands, noting the sure sign of one bracing themselves, almost mentally (and magically?) limbering up for the next attempt.

He noticed the signs at once, and that was even without the isolated warm breeze. Years in this job had helped him to see it in things like the widening of eyes, the relaxing of posture, the un-tensing of shoulders, and just a general sense of comfort and familiarity. At least, that was what usually happened upon finding a match.

Zeke broke into a grin too. "I think you're right," he said, nodding in approval, before adding, "Congratulations!" Some lovely sparks there too; he gave an appreciative chuckle at those. "You'll want to know all about your wand now, I'm guessing?" he asked, holding out the box again so it could be rung up and bundled together with any accessories she might buy, before launching into his explanation.

"This is ten inches and two thirds of strong red oak, with a billywig sting core. Oak is a strong and powerful wand wood, and red oak in particular is an excellent duelling wand, as it tends to chose those with very quick reactions." Perhaps that was somewhat linked to the way this wood was drawn to those who were very passionate, or even at times hot-headed. "I find that the characteristics of English oak also apply to red oak wands to some degree, so you may find you have an affinity with creature and plant magic too. Also, it might interest you to know that an owner of an oak wand makes an excellent leader." Just a little extra fact there, though really Zeke had no way of knowing if it was a piece of information that would please his customer. Some people were inclined to be leaders, some definitely weren't, and some could take it or leave it. Still, it was interesting to know, he thought. "Billywig stings make for wands that are undoubtedly dependable. This wand will be excellent for charms in particular, especially those related to lift or propulsion. Wands with these cores tend not to take too long to master, and can be relied upon to produce magic in any situation. However, it can be a little vocal - noisy spellwork, you know - so it's a little tricky to use in stealthy situations. Nothing that can't be tamed with a little work, however."

Phew! So, that was that. "The wand by itself is 12 galleons, and we have a range of other products too, if you're interested."
