Placed strategically along the north side of the street, there are about five park benches on either side of the street offering a place for the weary to rest their tired feet for a moment. There is one situated between Potage's Cauldron Shop and Slug and Jiggers Apothecary, one between Madam Malkin's and Flourish and Blotts - and then on the opposite side of the street, between Magical Menagerie and Eeylops Owl Emporium, and Quality Quidditch Supplies and Scribbulus Writing Implements. The fifth bench is right before Gringotts Wizarding Bank, clearly placed there to let you know you've reached where the street begins to curve.
Take a seat and take a load off if you like, these benches are the perfect spots to sit and chat with friends while you take a break from shopping, or if you've come from Florean's you might be looking for a spot that you can sit and finish off your ice cream before it melts. Try not to be a bench hog though - if you're here for too long the benches themselves might get sick of you and nudge you off so that somebody else can sit for a while too!
Eulalia Walles had checked TWO things off her shopping list already, and was on her way to their third or fourth stop (she'd lost count of the shops she hadn't needed anything from) when she spotted, right on a bench, her cousin Tamara. Slipping away from her parents, she made a beeline for her cousin closest in age. She hopped up onto the bench next to the sliiightly older eleven-year-old and peered over to see what book she was reading. She didn't bother to say hello, of course, saying hello wasn't for cousins who were born only 37 days apart.
To no one, or at least not Eulalia's, surprise, Tam was reading a music book. In the hubbub of the Alley, Lally couldn't hear her cousin humming, but she gently nudged the girl with her elbow. "Is this a new book?" she asked, depositing her tiny reptilian friend on her cousin's shoulder without asking if that was okay.
She was so caught up in her imagination and the impressive solo she was currently playing, that Tam hadn't even noticed the wooden bench creak underneath as another person joined her. Her hums were only growing louder too as it all came to a crescendo and right at the pivotal moment -
She gave a startled hop on the bench as an album found it's way gently into her side. Her eyes popped open and first thing she saw was the tiny reptile on her shoulder, which softened her expression as she let go of her book to reach up and scritch him gently under the chin before looking around at her cousin. "Lally! It is! I just got it at Atticus Aldredge's." She gestured for a moment to the plastic still gathered in her skirt, as if evidence were necessary. "What shop are you coming from?" She glanced around her to try to take stock of any purchases that might have been made.

"Atticus Aldredge?" Eulalia tested out the name. "Never heard of him." She examined the evidence, plucking a piece of plastic wrap from her cousin's skirt and holding it close to her face for a better look. It looked.....see-through. Waterproof, maybe, which she would guess was important for protecting books made of paper.
Lally sighed. Her most recent stop with her parents had been to buy the most boring of all their supplies: quills and ink and parchment. It was the sort of errand she hadn't really been needed for. "The...the... that one," she said, pointing back toward Scribbulus Writing Implements. "I don't recommend it." Hopefully her aunt and uncle could spare Tam and Andy the trip. Black ink, standard quills, there hadn't been any choosing to do, and she had complained the whole time. Her only hope was that she'd complained enough to get out of cauldron shopping.
"Dot?" Will asked in a waved greeting as he approached the park bench with every intention of taking a seat beside his friend, and kicking off his shoes. His feet got so warm when he had sneakers on especially in the summer months. Walking around in DA shops to look for school supplies didn't help. Luckily for Will he was allowed a bit of freedom and could wander off for an hour or so and meet up with a friend or two, and drink something cold without his mum watching his every step. His siblings couldn't say the same.
Unfortunatley Will still hadn't gotten used to his new glasses, and when he was and wasn't supposed to wear them, and as thus his vision wasn't the best. This lead to him tripping over his own two big feet on his way to Dot, and after a bit of a dance he landed flat on the ground on his bottom in front of his friend asking curiously "What's hard Dot?"
Hearing her nickname was what had broken Dot out of her thoughts. The aching race of her mind quelled as she searched for Will, her eyes widening as she watched the scene playout in front of her. Holy cannoli had he just – had that really just happened? Her lips parted as she wanted to call out to say careful as she saw him careening down the street toward her.
Is he going to stop in time? was her final thought before he came to a record scratch of a stop and landed in front of her. It took her a moment to realize he was asking her a question when every part of her brain was trying to piece together how he had fallen so gracefully. She would have careened straight into him had she been the one falling.
”have you ever ... fallen down a flight of stairs holding a drink and managed not to spill a lick of it? Because I’m pretty sure you have a talent or falling well and coming out of it rather unscathed” she was honestly quite impressed by this talent. Not that she would test it out by seeing its limits. That was something a good friend would not do. What was hard – she paused as she tried to remember what she had been thinking about. ”Oh! hard ... well, the ground – are you okay? But really really I’m contemplating a new pet? I kind of want to see if I can bring a Raven to school or just befriend one at school and make a friend for life that way” if she went the making a friend of life route she wondered if that friendship would follow her family forever.

It hurt!! It really hurt!
Will's bottom parts were hurting like dragon fire, and here Dot thought he had come out of it unscathed? Will prided himself on having a good poker face as he clambered up on his feet with some difficulty to sit down on the park bench next to Dot. With a thoughtful smile pursing his lips he contemplated her question. "I'm a talented young man true, but no I have never fallen down a flight of stairs with a drink in my hand, and managed to come out of it unscatched. When I've fallen down stairs in the past after being chased by one of my many siblings then I usually end up with a bruised head or banged arm." Wasn't that the truth? He had enough memories, and a few scars too to prove it. "Plus, landing hard on my bottom does hurt." He just had to point that out to Dot.
"You want a pet raven?" Will asked with a raised brow. "Why not a rat or a pygmy puff or owl?" They seemed like more reasonable pets. He knew what it said on the list about pets, and raven's weren't included on the allowed list. "I want to get a pet too, but I want something that isn't so popular you know like a cat that everyone else seems to have. I want something different, special."
"Atticus Aldredge?" Eulalia tested out the name. "Never heard of him." She examined the evidence, plucking a piece of plastic wrap from her cousin's skirt and holding it close to her face for a better look. It looked.....see-through. "Did you get your wand yet?"
Hearing her own words repeated back to her managed to confuse Tam, which made her wonder if she had just been too focused on her imagined concerto or she'd been distracted by the reptile on her shoulder. She glanced down at the book again and pointed at the last name of the person who had compiled the pieces and made adaptations to the sheets to fit the cello. "I think I got confused. The person on the front of this book is Alredge, but Atticus is the shop and and... " It was a nice sounding name though, wasn't it?
Anyways.
The sigh in itself was pretty telling and Tam smiled sympathatically as she reached out to pat her cousin's shoulder before brown eyes turned towards the stationary shop a bit down the alley. "Did you at least get to pick any pretty ink colors for your notes or anything?" If she could pick, she thought she'd settle on purple. Purple flowers were her favorite and it was so regal. Would school notes be more interesting if they were regal?
At the wand question the girl shook her head. She'd asked to save that for last because she was both a little bit nervous but also thought she'd be TOO excited to focus on anything else once she'd been paired. She was really just hoping for something decent with transfiguration. "Have you gone already?"

Will’s comment elicited a small snort of a laugh out of Dot. Running from siblings was far too understandable when you had a collection of siblings of your own. ”I get it, ... it was just a smooth transition from standing to not standing” she had jested at him as he moved to sit next to her. ”oh, I figured it hurt, but ... it was smooth you know? like if I’d done that I’d have landed face-first in the bench or on someone’s lap” she shuddered slightly at the idea of landing on people.
When he asked her about the Raven she just smirked. ”yeaaaah but Pygmy Puff’s can’t learn to talk I mean ... hello? Ravens can speak” her small grin kept growing as she thought about the idea and leaned into her friend’s shoulder. ”I know I probably won’t be able to do it but I’d even settle for befriending a wild one I mean its not like i’m trying to get a Knarl or something that can’t be domesticated” birds were smart after all. Still, it wasn’t like she was going to sneak one onto campus. That would be absolutely bonkers of her. She would never get away with that. When Will commented about wanting something special she squinted at him for a moment, "why not see if you can get a singing toad or frog or Kneazle?"

More on pygmy puffs later though...hopefully!
"I mean..." the Hufflepuff considered thoughtfully while tapping her cheek with the remainder of her licorice wand. "...that does make sense. Licorice comes from a plant...or a root...or a leaf? I comes from some part of a plant. What did your grandma say when she caught you eating her plants?" And why was Aurora chewing on them in the first place? Or was it maybe a memory from when she was real little and that phase where one put everything into your mouth? Anna certainly had and by far the worst of her choices had been when she had naively attempted to make her own cockroach clusters. Shall just leave that story there, shall we? Between herself and Aurora, sales in black licorice were clearly going to spike. You are most welcome candy industry. "I always imagined it the opposite...I mean...doesn't life get more exciting the more experiences you have? SO...wouldn't it also make sense then that the more different things you tried the wider your taste buds stretched and the more exciting your buds became?" Or maybe she just didn't want to think about growing up as being something boring.
"We could do that! I also want to get another couple of kitten toys for Duchess Skedaddle Downyfur. I made her a few but...I don't think they will last her through the first week of term so I ought to buy her a more sturdy one as a gift," she nodded thoughtfully. "If you want to pop by the Menagerie with me too."
Anna looked down at her shoes and wiggled her toes. No one could see she was doing that, including herself, but she could obviously feel them. "Nargles? No. Nothing so lucky as that. They just got caught on some branches or snagged on jagged bits of bark while I was climbing trees."
Unfortunately Aurora hadn’t yet been educated as to what part of the plant liquorice came from, in fact she wasn’t aware that liquorice was from a plant at all. She had assumed that it was artificially made like most things were nowadays. She couldn’t help but giggle at Anna thinking that Rora actually liked eating plants though. “I meant what I imagine chewing dead plants would taste like. My Grandma isn’t very good at keeping her plants alive, they look a bit floppy. I’ve never actually eaten a plant,” she pondered for a second before correcting herself. “Except vegetables! Oh and salad.. and FRUIT.” She had in fact eaten a lot of plants in her life but Anna knew what she meant, right?
“I guess so..” she replied. “But don’t adults not like sugar so much? I can’t imagine purposefully not eating SWEETS and ice cream just because they’re not healthy.” Rora’s mums were always so careful with what they ate, the Ravenclaw was sure that wouldn’t be so strict when she was a parent.
The blonde’s eyes lit up as soon as Anna mentioned going to the Menagerie to get toys for her kitten. Not only was the Menagerie her favourite shop in the whole of Diagon Alley but Rora also came from a cat loving family and couldn’t help but squeal at the thought of seeing a baby cat. “Why haven’t I met her yet?” she asked practically bouncing on the park bench. “Will you be bringing her to school? Can I have cuddles?!” So MANY questions. “Of COURSE I’ll come with you! We can meet all the cute animals when we are in there too. My Ma has a Munchkin cat but she didn’t give me enough money to get her toys too” she pouted.
Aurora had yet to make her mind up whether she believed that Nargles existed but they did make a great excuse as to where all her lost things went. “OH! There’s a big tree at Hogwarts that when you climb it and jump out it’s charmed so you don’t hurt yourself.” Anna was probably acquainted already with the climbing tree but it felt like important information regardless just in case she hasn’t yet been up it. “Do you not like shoes much?” she giggled.

Picking pretty ink colors for her notes? That had not even occurred to Eulalia as an option. She shook her head. "Black and blue," she said. "Plus orange for annotations." She had decided against red because she worried red ink would look too much like blood.
Lally puffed her chest out a little bit when Tam said she didn't have a wand yet. "I got mine, it's good for dueling," she announced. That sounded a lot more impressive than the part she found personally more exciting, that it was good for nonverbal spells. And she wanted to impress her cousin. "Have you gotten anything yet, or just that book?"

With being part of such a big family, Tam was always trying to think of ways here and there that she could personalize things - even if it was just her notes. She wanted to ask her parents if she could have a deep gray, which she just thought would look pretty on paper but not nearly as harsh as black. Orange was a good selection too though! It was different than the usual red, which truthfully she probably would have shied away from as well. "Orange is nice! Orange and blue are also complimentary so when you write them together on a page I bet it'll look extra nice!"
A wand good for duelling? Her brown eyes went WIDE as her mouth dropped into a small O. "Duelling? That sounds exciting!" And like Lally. "I hope mine is good for non-verbals or something!" She liked the idea of being able to cast spells without drawing attention to herself. So she would have been EXTRA excited (and jealous) of the other thing it was good at! At the question of if she'd gotten anything else, she turned a bit red. "Well... no.. I got a little distracted. I think my parents were going to just grab stuff for us!" Though she was supposed to be helping with a divide and conquer type of situation. "What do you still need to get?"

Eulalia beamed as Tam complimented her ink choices. Maybe next summer she and her cousin would do their shopping together, and Tam could help her choose more complimentary colors. More beaming, and a slightly taller stance, ensued from Tamara's obviousness with how impressed she was with Lally's wand. "It is exciting," she said, adding "And it's good for non-verbals too. Maybe you'll get one with the same ingredients!"
Was that what wands were made of? Ingredients? It didn't seem like the right word, but...Tam would understand her, probably. Components sounded too technical now that the word had occurred to her.
"Hmmmm I still need lots of things," Lally said, trying to remember them all. "Books, mainly. And my new robes?" She looked around, trying to remember which shop she was supposed to meet her parents in. She wasn't sure. At this point, she thought it might be better for her to stay put and just let them find her. Or her aunt or uncle could find them both. Or maybe if she got the cauldron shop right when her parents were finishing up, that would solve all her problems. "I think maybe I need to catch up with mum and dad," she said thoughtfully. Hopefully for robes shopping. That might be fun.

His landing had been smooth? Had Dot really seen his dance and how hard he had landed on the ground? Will was doubtful and repeated again "Smooth? How was my fall smooth?" It confused him since he probably had a nice blooming bruise that was forming somewhere down below but it was quickly forgotten as Dot's last words made him super curious. "You've landed in someone's lap after after a fall?" The face-first into a bench image made Will wince in sympathy for his friend.
"That's true, and I get the talking allure, but Pygmy puff's are a lot easier to handle and cuddly." Will felt it necessary to still argue for the pygmy puff's case even if he wasn't likely to buy one for himself anytime soon. "You like knarls too?" Will asked trying to understand. Why was Dot so interested in getting a pet that was hard if not impossible to domesticate and not something she could bring to Hogwarts? "Maybe you can ask professor Paton if she has any creatures that needs a carer or owner when we get to school? She might be able to set you up." Then Dot would be safe and Will wouldn't need to worry. He shook his head at his friend as he asked bewildered "Do you see me as a singing frog or toad owning person?"

Her little mouth dropped into an O, eyes going WIDE at how perfect Lally's wand was. How exciting for her cousin!! Tam hoped there was some similiarity between their wands but... if not, she'd just be happy her cousin found something so well suited and trust the wandmaker chose the correct one for her, whatever it was when she finally made her way that direction. She really should do that soon, she was feeling much more excited about it now. "I hope so! Maybe we'll have a similar wood type or something!" She grinned back at her, very much understanding what she'd meant by ingredients.
Though... she wasn't entirely positive that's what they were generally referred to as either.
She nodded in understanding at that, knowing there was lots to find too for herself as well. "Are you meeting them at uh... Madame Malkins then?" For the robes, she meant. Or maybe it was supposed to be Flourish and Blotts? Picking up Lally's lizard from her shoulder, she gave it another gentle under the chin scratch before putting it back on her cousin's shoulder and hopping off the bench. "What shop are you going to go to to look? I think Mum and Dad went to the cauldron shop so... I can go there to find them and if your parents aren't there, I can make them go by wherever you are so you aren't alone!"

A similar wood type. That would be so COOL. She wondered what kinds of wands her older brother and sister had...maybe she'd ended up with something similar to them.
She'd have to ask.
"I, oh. Well..." Eulalia didn't answer the question. She didn't remember where she was supposed to meet them. But she did know her parents were at the cauldron shop, apparently with Tam's parents, so that seemed like a good place to go. "Let's go to the cauldron shop, that's where my mum and dad are too," she said. And if they'd already gone to wherever she was supposed to meet them...Aunt Addison and Uncle Ivor would help her find them. She hopped up from the bench and carefully took her lizard back from Tam's shoulder.
Having just visited Olivanders to deposit some money, and change some Muggle cash into Galleons, Florrie decided to hang around Diagon Alley for a little while. The coffee shop had been considerably busy, and the sun was shining its (albeit rather weak) rays, so she'd taken her medium, extra shot, extra hot, almond milk, sugar-free gingerbread syrup latte to go and had perched herself on one of the benches further up the street to drink it.
Even though the weather didn't particularly call for it, her oversized sunglasses were perched on her nose, providing the perfect cover for some people watching.

Cooper preferred not to wear his creature healer robes outside of the Menagerie but today's shift had been particularly long and strenuous, his first time assisting in a simple but necessary operation to boot, and he couldn't quite bring himself to shed his robes as part of his packing up routine. The extra effort to wiggle himself free from the arms that had become entirely too tight around his shoulders recently was too exhausting to think about. He'd just get Phoebe or Theo to help peel him out of them once he returned to the flat...and see about heading over to Malkins and have Charlie make the appropriate adjustments to his robes. He would write Kinsay and ask her, simple work like adjusting hem lines would likely be a breeze for her, but she always seemed to have enough on her plate without him adding to it.
He had at least unbuttoned it, though he could barely button it anyway these days, and untucked his favorite light flannel shirt in a deep navy and burnt red from his jeans and was just ready to go LAY down somewhere. Maybe the playground...or Memorial Garden...or a park bench. Not to nap but just...have a rest before heading back to the flat and working on a spread for the Benoit estate and another private project for Monsieur Benoit himself. Nearly tripping over his own shoelaces, that he had not realized were untied until he had nearly faceplanted and caught himself with a firm palm against one of the streetlights, he had to laugh at himself while running a hand through his now much shorter mop of thick brown hair. He somewhat missed the manbun, but he could always grow it back. Kneeling to fix his shoe, he caught a glimpse of some (he assumed) expensive looking heels across the way attached to a pair of long legs. He dared not allow his, still mostly, boyish gaze to linger for too long and finished his shoes with a double knot before collapsing into the bench nearest him (and across from said long legs and stylish shoes) with a hearty groan and both arms folding over the back of the bench.

Florrie had taken notice of the man exiting the Menagerie, though she didn't realise who it was. Instead, she just bit her lip to hold back a chuckle as they tripped, and only when they had sat opposite her did she realise just who it was.
And, quite frankly, she wasn't really sure how to behave. Things hadn't exactly gone well the last time they'd seen each other, and Florrie was kind of annoyed that Cooper hadn't bothered to even try and reach out to her over the past few... years? Had it really been that long? Not that she'd bothered to reach out, either - but the dynamic of their relationship had drastically changed, and she had truly felt that if he wanted her in his life, he would have been the one to let her know.
Of course, there was the whole worry of being judged that she was pretending didn't exist. She was also pretending that she didn't miss him.
When he side, she raised an eyebrow and pushed her sunglasses to the top of her head, where they nestled amongst her perfectly blown out blonde locks. "Long day?" she called over to him, figuring that even if he didn't look up and see her, surely the Canadian accent (though slightly muted after the last eight years in the UK) would give her away.

He would be...quite devastated to know, not to mention confirm an insecurity he had been fighting off for some time, that she did not count him never missing a birthday of hers via Owl Post. Well, save for her last birthday. He had finally given in to the embarrassment he felt over just the potential that it had all been one sided. He knew this was not true, but there was a layer of embarrassment laced with disappointment. To him, the quaffle was exclusively on her side of the pitch to do with what she wanted...and Cooper had made a promise to himself after spending an entire evening in a muggle police station that he would no longer chase after that which never wanted to be caught.
So to speak. It was a metaphor in process.
Unaware that this was a spiral he could potentially slip down, Cooper stretched his arms up high once again and released a soft groan as he felt a couple of much needed pops along his back. "...I could pick up some flowers before I..." he contemplated to himself - aloud, because there was far too much occupying his mind these days to stick to mental notes. Speaking things out loud tended to solidify them. Finishing the complete thought, that is, so there was no telling if he would recall the desire to pick up a bouquet of flowers before swinging by WADA or not...especially once he heard some one call over to him. Or ... well ... he assumed him since the area was quite empty currently. A voice familiar like a full moon on cloudless night and yet foreign like snow falling on a hot summer's day.
Slowly he straightened, his head rolling forwards until he was looking straight ahead to the torso, the face, of the person attached to the stylish shoes and long legs.
"...oh...wow..."

Would he have been devastated to know that she thought he sent the birthday cards out of obligation? That she thought he believed it was something he had to do, rather than wanted to? That if there was a possibility of a standing order for Owl Post birthday cards, he'd signed up to it?
That was how Florrie felt, even if she would never admit to it. Even if she pretended she was above it all.
She heard him mention flowers, and had to force herself not to arch a perfectly shaped eyebrow. Instead she waited for his gaze to fall on her, and then offered a smile. A smile that was trying to be her usual confident one, but a smile that also betrayed a slight nervousness. "Who are the flowers for?" she asked softly, kicking the leg that was crossed over the other.

Perhaps only in that is was never the Cooper Emilio Branxton way to send just a card to anyone who had such an impactful influence on his life. Though...it would maybe not completely shock him if she disregarded his humble, always snow related, gifts (or at least pretended to depending on the day or the company with which she opened anything) considering how she was showered in luxury and glam. Surely the little Tibetan pendant necklace he had given her long ago was lost among all the diamonds and...whatever else. Or, well, he assumed as much...which was likely unfair of him...and he suddenly felt a phantom ache in his left eye and cheek. Long healed by now, it was a little cruel that life would send him a reminder of that day in the lodge now.
So...yeah...devastation was certainly in the cards. Perhaps more embarrassment that he had been chasing a spring wind for so long that maybe wanted nothing more than to forever slip through his fingers. She was still, in his thoughts, often equated with Flora. Though he had ceased comparing those he was close to with myth for quite some time now - hmmm, interesting. When had he properly stopped doing that? Growing up and maturing was a wild adventure, that was for certain.
Not the turn of conversation he would have pivoted to, but it was as good an ice breaker as any considering matters and the fact that he found himself entirely tonguetied. "Oh...well...um...," he began as he straightened so he wasn't slouching and looking like a complete slob on the bench. Getting his mum a bouquet was a thought that had swam around in his thoughts briefly, but it was a little impractical to get fresh flowers now when he would not be visiting home until later in the week for family dinner. He smiled to himself and chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck and would say it was the sun causing a bit of additional colors to his cheeks. "...my girlfriend. A midweek surprise...of sorts."

For some reason, Florrie had not been expecting Cooper to say his girlfriend. She didn't know why her gut reaction was disappointment, and shoved it far away so that she could pretend it hadn't been. She would never admit that it was. But really, had she expected him to pine after her forever? She'd been plenty aware that there were girls who he'd taken on dates, whom had wanted him when she didn't, but hearing the term girlfriend felt so... weirdly official.
And she supposed a little part of her was relieved, that he wasn't still wanting her, when she couldn't be the person he wanted. The fact was that she wasn't the person he saw, and she didn't want to be, most of the time. Though maybe it was time she took off the necklace he bought for her - just thinking about it caused her fingers to stray absentmindedly to the chain, running the charm between her fingers.
Watching him, Florrie smiled at the blush and tried her best to look encouraging. "Anyone I know?" she couldn't help but ask.

It was, honestly, almost pathetically comical how long it had taken him - them - to get to where they were now. Pretty exclusively his own doing thanks to his timidness and overthinking despite Phoebe (sometimes literally) knocking sense into him. He did not notice the toying with the necklace, not yet at least, seeing as he was preoccupied with his own thoughts and reflecting back on just how everything had happened. From dodging death by the wand of Neo Alliance members in a broom closet where urgency and fear of oblivion had fueled actions to now...it had been one wild journey. Thus far.
His eyes refocused on Florrie who, she may be relieved to know, he had mostly taken off his rose colored glasses towards. He realized now, understood, how often he had done this too...each and every time it resulting in an unrequited crush or heartache. Seeing people for the potential you wanted them to have and being ignorant to the person they were showing you they were was one of his vices, good in some ways and detrimental in others. He was, of course, to stubborn to believe the girl (woman) he thought Florrie was was not in there somewhere...but he was no longer holding on to her. Had not been for some time. A fist to the face would do that to a person. So, it was okay, Florrie. He had taken you off the marble pedestal a more boyish and naive Cooper sculpted your likeness upon.
"Oh...um..." he chuckled with another little rub to the back of his neck before he sat up straight again and tried to adjust his healer robes. He really needed to get these fixed before he lost circulation at the shoulders. "Perhaps? She was a year above us," he explained. Or had it been two? Time was rather muddy in hindsight and with her being held back a year. Academics and moving forward was hard for their generation. Wartime had that effect. "Her name is Olivia...if that rings a bell. She attends WADA now."

Relief and disappointment continued to war for dominance as Florrie watched the boy - the man before her adjust his robes. She knew a few spell that would help, but now didn't seem the right time to point out that he needed a new uniform.
The name did ring a bell, though for once Florrie didn't have to pretend that wasn't sure; although it seemed familiar, she couldn't picture the person in her mind, so the impression of the girl hadn't been enough to linger through the years. Maybe, for Olivia, that was a good thing - the people whom Florrie remembered weren't always thought of favourably. She shrugged, leaning over slightly to adjust her knee-high boots, and when she looked back up she smiled at Cooper. "Vaguely, though it's a fairly common name," she admitted, an almost apologetic note to her voice. Though why she was apologising was lost on her. "If you're happy, Coop, I'm happy for you."
That part was, at least, true.

Perhaps he should have interpreted her words to be a passive aggressive dig, but he did not. And if it was not meant as such, then it was for the best that his remained naive in his lingering boyhood. "It might be but...she's extraordinary," he smiled with a sheepish nod of the head. Truly, one had to be to put up with his ineptness and overall snail's pace when it came to relationships and intimacy. And that was not even including his hyper fixations on interests and his work schedule that kept nuance zipping right over his head like a golden snitch teasing a seeker. She had taught him how to appreciate color...and one very specific shade of red. "I mean...well..." he continued as he brought himself back down from the clouds he had been floating in and rubbed the back of his neck. "...your social circles were quite different while we were all at Hogwarts, I think. She was in Ravenclaw like me, however." In case that was additional context that helped. Ultimately though...it really was okay if she did not recall who Olivia was. It was like, well, it wasn't like he knew everyone in her life either.
...which...well...the phantom ache could knock it off any minute now.
Cooper ceased rubbing his neck and leaned forward slightly instead, his elbow now resting on his knees without slouching forward too much, and turned his attention properly, undividedly, back to her. "Thanks, Florrie," he added with a smile. "And...what about you? Are you still...um...what occupies your attention these days?" It was a horrendous way to ask about how she was doing, if she had missed him at all, what all she was up to...but he still found himself humbly tonguetied in her presence.

Extraordinary.
There was a pang in Florrie's gut at that word, and the look that came over Coopers face. It wasn't longing for him, or at least not specifically: it was a longing to have someone feel that way about her. She didn't really care for the additional context, but kept up her smile and nodded as the boy man opposite her spoke, internally working to bury feelings that she didn't want to acknowledge. She didn't need anyone to feel like that about her. She had everything.
"I'm still working at WHiM," Florrie said nonchalantly, though pride flickered across her face at the ability to say that. It was lucky that her workplace was so interesting, because it meant that she didn't have to talk about her other streams of income. Which, well, Cooper knew all too much about, but she was hoping they could brush past it. "Not much else to say. Everything is... same old."
It sounded lame, when she said it like that, and Florrie fought the anger she felt at herself. "Life's great, yeah." Her addition felt rather forced, and she wasn't even sure why. What else was she supposed to say?

Cooper, were he privy to such thoughts, may wonder if it was more that she was infatuated with the idea of such a relationship. He, well, he had been that very person for a long time (though with such adoration also came with his own presumptions that often got in the way of many of his relationships) and he was...well... he felt confident in saying that there was at least one other individual out there who would describe Florrie as extraordinary and not mean it like some business man drooling over his latest investment. But...well...anyway... it was what it was at this point, he supposed.
But...he had always felt her to be lonely. Lonely in a room full of crowded people because no one could see beyond the facade she put up. The perfect porcelain mask, if you will.
"Oh...I...well..." he floundered while once again rubbing his palms against his knees. "...I...am...well... the last I saw you was, I believe, before you switched careers to journalism...so...congratulations on your not-so-new new position." He did not read such magazines and never felt the inclination to leaf through them either while in any waiting room. He was fairly sure he had seen a copy or two on the shelves at the Menagerie or St. Mungo's though. "So you...enjoy that then? I mean, you must. The way your eyes just glimmered say as much."
Which she obviously did not enjoy was...what she said immediately after, but he wouldn't say anything to that right now.
