About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.
Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.
Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy! This shop is owned by an NPC and is a part of the IC Shopkeeper initiative. For details, please see this thread.
Do you have a character who has written a book and would like for their works appear in the inventory here? Fill out this questionnaire and the Diagon Alley Proprietors will make it happen!

| Finn~ A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daniel pushed open the door to Flourish and Blotts with his shoulder, his arms holding onto a couple of shopping bags. He took a few moments to look around before proceeding to the required textbook's table near the door. He carefully placed a few of his bags on the ground as they contained a couple of glass vials for his potions class and reached into his pocket. He unfolded a piece of paper and read which books he needed to buy for his upcoming sixth year.
The Hufflepuff flipped over a copy of Advanced Rune Translation to see if it had any damage and once he was satisfied, Daniel put the copy in his shopping basket before turning around to search for 'A Guide to Advanced Transfiguration.'

Finn wanted to gather his required textbooks quickly so that he could browse while he was here. He first found his way to the transfiguration textbook, stepping carefully over a few bags someone had put on the ground. Once he got the textbook, he flipped to the middle, curious about what they would be learning now. It was O.W.L. year, so he supposed it would be more serious than last term.
Focused on reading the chapter titles as he flipped through the book, he tripped over the bags he'd oh so carefully stepped over before. "Oops," he muttered, pausing and looking up from the book. He glanced around, spotting a slightly older boy. "Um, is this yours?" he asked, pointing at his feet. He'd never been particularly graceful but after his last growth spurt, poor Finn felt like he had far too many arms and legs. |

| Nadia Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede! Pushing opening the door to F&B Maria entered the bookstore with her hogwarts list in hand. This was electives year so she needed more BOOKS. Pushing away her bushy dark curls from out of her face the 13 year old murmured to herself as she looked around at the stacked shelves of wonderful things to read. "Is there an electives book section or do i have to look up authors?" Thoughtful Maria didn't expect to get an answer so she headed off to pick up her third year copies in potions, dada, HoM and others first.
Several minutes later she returned to the start, arms overloaded with books but still needed a few extra. Stopping in front of the Ancient Runes shelves Maria said out loud "It'd be so cool if I will get to write my own runes in class."

Stopping in front of the Ancient Runes shelves Maria said out loud "It'd be so cool if I will get to write my own runes in class." Nadia had managed to escape being right under her parents’ watchful eyes. It helped that she had stepped into the bookstore for her school books and not hinting at being up to no good. It wasn’t like there weren’t a ton of other adults and shopkeepers to keep an eye on her. Like she was currently keeping an eye on the books and bookshelves trying to think of where to begin. Were the school year’s all together? Or did she have to go subject by subject to pick out each on her list?
It was then that she was distracted by a remark that caught her attention. Writing their own runes? Not that that was a subject for first years. “Is that something that we could learn?” the eleven year old asked the older girl curiously before thinking about it.

Daniel was circling the table looking for the textbook he needed when he noticed it somewhere in the middle and reached forward to grab it as some random guy tripped over what he assumed was a stack of books. Paying him no attention and instead checked the quality of the book when he was surprised that the guy began to talk to him.
He looked up as he placed the Advanced Transfiguration textbook in his shopping basket and leaned sideways to see what the other guy was talking about.
He looked down at his feet and spotted his shopping bags. "Did you get hurt?" he asked, looking back at the guy with a slight frown on his face.

Finn was surprised the boy's first reaction was whether he'd been hurt. Surprised, and sort of flattered that this stranger cared. "No?" he said, a little questioning because his own question hadn't been answered. "Thank you?"
He tucked his soon-to-be-own transfiguration textbook under his arm and looked the boy up and down. He didn't look much older than Finn, but he wasn't in any of Finn's classes, so... "Are you a fif--uh, sixth year?" It was only logical for him to be slightly older. Unless he just looked young. Or maybe was a transfer student? Finn wasn't sure. He looked back down at the bag he'd tripped over. "I think we should move this, so nobody else trips," he added helpfully, gathering that it didn't belong to this other boy, so maybe someone had set their things down and forgotten about it. |

Judging by the guy's surprised reaction and the uncertain 'thank you?' he must have misjudged what Daniel's actual meaning behind the question had been. He hadn't asked because he was worried. Why should he be concerned about some random dude? He'd asked because he wasn't in the mood for an argument, so if the guy had said he'd been hurt, Daniel would have pretended the bags weren't his.
However, things seemed to go better than expected, and as he was asked more questions, the Hufflepuff nodded his head. "I'm starting my sixth year" he said, reaching for another book on the table. It wasn't one he needed, but it piqued his interest. "It's fine, those bags are mine. I left them there because it was inconvenient to carry them all while putting the books in a basket." He hadn't intended to trip someone with them; it was an honest mistake. "What books are you purchasing?"

It sounds cool to write runes, don't you think?" After reaching up to take the book down listed on her list she introduced herself. "I'm Maria, by the way and I'm in badger house and third year at Hogwarts. Who are you?" She asked curiously.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Vera Brinley Thanatos Gryffindor Graduated Hogwarts RPG Name: Mandrake Beery Slytherin Fifth Year | For Batman <3 Anashti l Brat Pack l Sally & Dr. Finklestein It probably came as a surprise to no one that Pablo Leventis was not a reader for the sake of just... being a reader. He would admit that it was a necessary evil at times, because how could you further your intelligence to later impress other people unless one TRIED to apply themselves? But that didn't mean he wanted to spend all his free time with his nose buried in a book. Instead, he could be out by the lake or on a boat - his true happy places. Which was why when he'd been in to Flourish and Blotts earlier, he'd been trying to make quick work of his new book list.
.. only to then misplace the list with all of his other supplies still drawn out on it.
With a groan, he'd had to then go BACK into the book store and comb through every aisle he'd been in previously - picking up books here and there to try to leaf through to see if he'd tried to shove it in between the pages for... whatever reason. He'd just finished thumbing through an Arithmancy book when he'd tried to place it back on the shelf, only for it to fall onto the floor behind him unnoticed.

Finn carefully disentangled himself so that this boy could get his things if he wanted. So hopefully nobody else would trip. It was a bookstore, after all, so there was nothing breakable and people might be less careful of their surroundings. "I see," he said cheerfully.
He held up the book he'd picked up. "I'm going to be a fifth year, so... um..." Finn consulted his list. "Standard Book of Spells, Grade 5, and Why I Didn't Die When the Augurey Cried." He frowned at that second title, curious about why a whole book was needed to answer that question. "You've taken your O.W.L.s, then? Were they...difficult?" He didn't quite mean difficult but really just wanted to know whether he needed to be worried now, or if he could be worried later. "Did you do well?" |

He should probably keep them with him in case he forgot them.
Starting his fifth year... Daniel sighed deeply as he thought about his own fifth year. One word to describe that year would be 'stressful'. He shrugged his shoulders as he picked up another book. He had two E's among the O's, so how was he going to explain to this guy that he believed he had failed when his grades had been near perfect? His own brother had called him crazy for having such an opinion. However, receiving an Exceed Expectation TWICE was a failure if your sole objective had been to receive Outstanding on every exam, wasn't it? "I did well, I guess...." His thoughts went to Victoria for a moment now they were talking about O.W.Ls and he hoped that his tutoring had not been in vain. ” Do you enjoy reading?” he asked, attempting to change the subject. OWLS were stressful to think about at the moment.

Maria had to be nice to the younger kid because if she wasn't then she'd do Jude and Desiree a poor favour who had been friendly to her when she had been a first year. Beaming brightly right back she said enthusiatically "Its a pleasure to meet you Nadia! First year, how fun! You should definitley get a Hogwarts a History copy then so you can read up on the sorting hat. The hat is creepily right about what house he sorts you into." Maria knew what she was talking about. She had thought she didn't want to be a badger but had found out that Hufflepuff was just the right fit for her.
Checking off the runes book from her list, Maria reached up to grab herself a copy of the monster book of monsters as well as a book for muggle studies. Looking sideways at Nadia she asked "What book do you need to find next? We can look together if you want?" Before she was done with her book finding she'd need a basket to put everything in. Books were heavy.

Since this was becoming less of a polite transactional exchange and more of an actual conversation. Daniel reached out and grabbed the bags over the table, nodding appreciatively. "Which House are you in?" he asked slightly out of the blue but he hadn't seen him in his own House before and he was starting to get a little bit curious.
He was aware that it could be puzzling for someone who didn't know him. Actually, his own brother, with who he was quite close, didn't understand him either. "Let's just say I set a goal for myself and didn't meet it" he tried to explain as he put a book on divination back down. He no longer studied that subject and had instead switched to Arithmancy in his fourth year. "Anyway, I think you should be worried about the exams if you plan to take them seriously."
He liked reading? Daniel's entire body language changed in response to the other guy's statement, and instead of occasionally looking up, he turned to face him. "Cool..." He wanted to ask additional questions, but because he wasn't the best at social interactions, he wasn't sure what to say. Fortunately, the other guy had this covered by providing his name. "I'm Daniel... I'm in Hufflepuff" he uttered, much to his dismay. He was still annoyed at the Sorting Hat for refusing to place him in Ravenclaw.

Having gotten used to the house question pretty early on (a.k.a. second year), Finn wasn't at all taken aback by the sudden question. "I'm a Gryffindor," he said, standing up a little taller. Not because he was trying to be taller than the other boy, but he did want to portray his house in the best way possible, which instinctively meant better posture.
Finn nodded as the boy explained more about his O.W.L.s...reaction. Setting goals was good. He frowned a bit, not reallly wanting to be worried already, but he did want to take the exams seriously so... "Do you have any...study...tips?" he asked. He'd meant to ask about a study guide, but decided mid sentence it was probably not great to ask someone he'd just met for a favor like that.
At the introduction, Finn gave a big smile. "Hufflepuff? Cool!" He wished he could be that close to the kitchens. "What do you....like to read?" he added curiously. |

“It’s nice to meet you too,” Nadia agreed wholeheartedly. She could use all the friendly faces she could at a new school, even having a twin sister right there alongside her the whole way and an older brother who led the way. Not to mention both her parents and Aunt Hads attended. Hogwarts, A History. “ I think we have a copy of that somewhere at home.” Or else maybe look for it in the library once she got to school. She had heard of it before and it sounded like a big tome. “It got my brother right for sure. “ One big Ravenclaw bookworm certainly described her elder brother.
She turned back to her list for her next option. “One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore…” she read, figuring that could only be a herbology text. “Sure,” she agreed to working together on getting her books all gathered. “Two sets of eyes are better than one.” In case she missed the book somewhere. Her own dark eyes gazing along the various shelves in search of her target. “And A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot,” in case her companion happened upon that one along the way.

When the guy named Finn proudly told him he was in Gryffindor, Daniel tried hard not to display any emotion. He wasn't a big fan of Gryffindors. Most of them, in his opinion, were loud and obnoxious, but perhaps this guy would prove him wrong.
A title on one of the shelves had piqued the Hufflepuff's interest, so he walked to the other side of the book table. "Well, I think everyone has their own way of studying" he said, opening the book in his hands. He noticed it was a novel. "For example, I prefer to study by reading books and writing notes, but I tutored a girl in my year who couldn't focus on learning like that"
Deciding that he wanted to buy this book as well, he placed it in his basket. "What I mean is that you should figure out what your studying style is and use it. Get some calming potions as well " He considered adding, 'you're going to need them,' but decided against it.
That was a risky question to pose to an avid reader, and the Hufflepuff would do his best not to get too into it "I enjoy mysteries the most" he said. "I also like reading about cursed artefacts and antiquities."

To Maria it felt like she had made a new friend and she had just talked to and helped Nadia look for books for a couple of minutes. She knew she shouldn't get ahead of herself, but it felt genuine so why not? Maria could use a new friend at Hogwarts. "Oh, you've got a brother? What is his name? I've got a brother too, but he's only 2 years old yet." Emari wasn't going to Hogwarts for another 9 years yet so there was a lot of time to guess his house. "Ah, herbology. It's fun to learn about, and take care of plants in the greenhouses all though some plants can have tempers." Maria mused as she walked over to the herbology section to see if she could spot the book in question. She needed the third year fungi text too right? Smiling over at Nadia she nodded "Of course I'll look. If you spot a copy of Home Life and Social Habits of British Muggles by Wilhelm Wigworthy or Unfogging the Future by Cassandra Vablatsky then give me a shout." It was much more fun to look for books together with a possible new friend than browsing alone. "So, what are you most looking froward to? The classes or getting to know your new classmates or house buddies?" Maria wondered curiously.

Trying to play it cool, he picked up the nearest book and opened to its index at the back. Yep, he had definitely taken three steps just to look at this book on...divination. Which he didn't even take. Finn put the book down at looked attentively at Daniel. "Calming potions?" he repeated thoughtfully. He doubted he'd need those, but...maybe just to be safe he'd get a few. If nothing else, he could share with his sisters.
At Daniel's announcement that he liked mysteries, Finn grinned. "That's cool," he said. "Do you have any mysteries that you would recommend?" Not that he'd read many mysteries himself, but maybe he would like them. |

Nadia nodded in confirmation. “Raj…or Rajesh,” she answered, giving both names he might be using in school. Did the other girl know him or of him despite the house and year difference? “He’s a Ravenclaw and in seventh year.” It was mildly annoying that she and Dy would only get a year to share the school with him. But then she suspected he didn’t mind it nearly as much because who wanted your younger siblings trailing along.
So, they were looking for her herbology and history textbooks and Maria…well…Muggle Studies and Divination textbooks if she wasn’t mistaken about the latter title. Nadia looked through the shelves nearest her as her companion searched on her own. The titles she read certainly were…interesting…to say the least. There were a few close calls with subjects that were close to what they were looking for until “Found one!” Nadia reaching for the white and gold-colored tome that was by Bathilda Bagshot’s famous work. “History of Magic done.” Which marked two in her possession and she put them in a basket she had decided to grab.

Picking up new books each year was probably Lydia's least favorite part of school supplies shopping. Actually...no, maybe getting the potions ingredients was. But this was definitely second least favorite.
Still, it had to be done, especially when she kept being reminded that the big bad OWL exams were done this term. That was...also not something she liked to think about.
So. She wouldn't. She would think about...books.
Consulting her list, and not noticing sets near the doorway, she went down a couple aisles without any luck. But then as she turned down the next aisle, she stumbled over something. She grabbed one of the shelves for support, sending a few more loose books toppling toward the floor - and one that thumped her in the head on its way down. "OW!"

"A seventh year, cool!" Maria murmured. "Sadly, I don't know Raj that well. I suppose we've had some classes together, but I haven't really spoken to him." Hogwarts was after all a big castle with hundreds of students so if she didn't know a boy who was 4 years older it wasn't weird. Spotting the herbology textbook on a high shelf Maria made a little squeak sound. "I've found your herbology book Nadia." She gestured and then leaned up on her tiptoes to get the book down before handing it to her new friend. Outside school you weren't allowed to use magic and thus, she had to get book from high places in the usual muggle way.
Walking along the shelves looking for her electives textbooks and possibly a book on flying she asked throwing a glance over at Nadia. "Are you looking forward to flying lessons?" It was then that she happened upon the muggle studies book by Wilhelm Wigworthy and beamed as she grabbed a copy. The smell of a new book was something extra.

Nadia had gone back to looking for the other titles on their list as she listened. “That’s alright…he tends to be on the quieter side.” Nose in a book, except when around the loved ones and creatures he chose to pay attention to. Turning to her new friend at the sound in surprise, her expression soon turned to happiness though just a tad concerned as she stretched to reach it. “Great!” the first year accepting the offered book with a sigh of relief. “Thanks.” For truly she would have been in even more trouble trying to reach the high shelf. “For sure….” Granted she had been up flying before, but to really be able to fly on a broom all on her own…and without the overprotective eyes of her dad and papa. “All classes really,” she remarked, answering Maria’s previous question to. “To explore the unknown…at least the unknown to me.” Though she wouldn’t mind finding something new. “What’s your favorite class?” she asked, as she moved closer to another shelf, thinking she spotted the divination book her companion was looking for.
