Default Eeylops Owl Emporium

Eeylops Owl Emporium strives to provide witches and wizards, young and old, with the necessities required to properly look after an owl, whether that be with packets of food or just a cage. Once you enter through the door you enter a world of chirping birds and rows upon rows of owls, ranging from the adorable tawny owl to the unique screech owl. Big or small, cute or ugly, quiet or obnoxious, each one would like a caring and loving home.

On either side of the rows of caged owls, adorning the walls are shelves. These shelves hold all of the things under the sun that you could ever what for your owl. Lining the first set of shelves are many jars of weird looking insects, ranging from stick insects to your plain ordinary green fly. The owls will eat any of these insects, so take your pick and buy as many as you want. Above the insect jars are an assortment of boxes all holding different sized packets of owl pellets. These are fun-sized little bits of food that are perfect for an owl. Dotted along either side of the shop, alongside the shelves are big boxes, contain an assortment of little cuddly toys and other little trinkets that will allow you to care for your owls every need.

Toward the back of the shop, a straight line from the door, where the shopkeeper is waiting to assist you. As you reach the back you notice that, like the rest of the shop, it looks old fashioned, maybe a bit rustic, but don't criticize for the shopkeeper loves their shop just as much as anything. When you're ready to cash out, go ahead, wait in line, and you'll be ready to leave with your new owl in no time at all.

SPOILER!!: inventory

This shop is owned by an NPC and is a part of the IC Shopkeeper initiative. For details, please see this thread.

Isabella was doing her usual trip to Diagon Alley -- after all the Hogwarts shoppers had cleared out -- for grading supplies, and a few potions supplies, for the term. She'd gotten just about everything she needed, and thought...why not drop in on her brother? He was probably working. And if not... she'd have a coffee instead.

Wrinkling her nose slightly at the owl smell, she began browsing. Greeting owls, as one did when in an owl emporium. Keeping a watch in her peripheral vision to see if Rafael was indeed behind the counter. Playing it cool. She didn't want him to think she'd come to London just to check up on him.

Being so knowledgeable when it came to flora, Rafael Melo had completely not foreseen himself working with animals of any kind. But when Gabriel had been taken by the Merpeople, he knew he needed to be closer to his family permanently. Which was how he ended up being one of Eyelops as an owl caretaker. Eyelops had been the first to offer him a job in London and he had taken it without second thought. A man’s gotta make money if he wants to be independent. Besides, Rafa enjoyed his job. A lot.

“We should get you back into your cage, shouldn’t we?”
Rafa was currently questioning a barn owl in Portuguese which was perched on his thickly gloved hand. “You’ve had quite a good time stretching your win- Isa??!” The man had caught sight of his sister and his face lit up like a thousand suns. Forgetting to return his feathered friend to the cage, Rafa closed the gap between him and Isabelle, his free arm opening for a hug. “Are you here stalking me?” Yep, still speaking in their mother tongue.

Isabella beamed as she finally saw her second-favorite brother, and he saw her too. "Rafa," she said, eyeing the owl on his arm. "Stalking you? I would never!" she protested, also in Portuguese, holding up her bags from the other stores as though in self-defense. "I was shopping."

Still keeping an eye on that barn owl, she shifted her bags into one hand and gestured at the store. "You know, this is not where I pictured you working," she said. In Portuguese, of course, so if his boss or whomever overheard, Rafa couldn't get in trouble. "I thought you would choose somewhere less... stinky." Not to mention owls could be dangerous if not handled correctly. Though Rafael seemed to know what he was doing. Maybe her little brother did belong here, after all.

R-U-D-E, Isa!

Absolutely rude! Rafa deserved to be the first favourite. The only favourite, actually. This is what he would be saying if he were conceited enough. How could he be when the Melo family was a tight knit one and he loved each of his crazy family members? Rafa rolled his eyes. “Sure,’’ he ribbed. “Use shopping as an excuse.” But those bags seemed mighty heavy. “Want to set those down at the back for a bit?” Rafa had his own belongings there, out of sight of the customers.

He was only too happy to continue the conversation in Portuguese. It wasn’t like the old days where the language was used by him on a daily basis. “This here is Mr. Beaks. Mr. Beaks, this is Isabelle. She missed me terribly but might not admit it.” The owl continued to stare at Rafa’s sister with a piercing gaze. “Neither did I,’’ he replied cheerfully, now resuming his task of caging Mr. Beaks once more. “Eeylops was the first place to have offered me a job and I grabbed it. Blame Gabe. He got himself Mernapped and I figured mum needed at least one of her sons close by. Speaking of Gabe, are you shopping for the wedding?”

Despite the unmistakable scent of an owl shop, Yoji Reed managed to stay long enough inside the shop to look for the right owl. It was going to be his first ever, and thought he should make his selection count. The young Reed stood right where different cages were hung, all sorts of owls looking down on him, some of which hooted at him for staring too long.

Finally, he had come across one gigantic owl type that drew him in. For some reason, despite moving on to check the other owls, he kept circling back to this particular owl, maybe because it was the same type of owl he'd come across in Mahoutokoro wherein it was a native specie. Yoji knew he'd get this owl in a heartbeat if it weren't for the galleons he needed to shell out. Standing at just four feet tall, the young Japanese boy patiently looked at the caged owl longingly while he did a quick math computation in his mind, zoning out a bit as he imagined the numbers in his head.

It was... going to be expensive in the long run, but he felt he could commit to its long-term care. But still, he was held back by the price. Not that he didn't have enough on him, but he did want to save the galleons he received as a birthday gift from his grandparents.

"This is harder than the wand-matching a while back..." he thought.

Desiree was on her way back to Madam Malkin’s after her lunch break when she remembered that she promised to pick up some treats for her brother’s owl. The soon-to-be fifth year was channeling her best Princess Aurora today in a pink and blue dress, matching shoes, and a tiara barrette in her hair. She giggled to herself as she stepped through the door. How fitting that she should be wearing an outfit inspired by the Disney princess with an owl friend! Shame that Adam’s owl wouldn’t let her dress him up like a prince to complete the look. He’d look so cute in a little cape and hat!

Her bright blue eyes scanned the shop as she made her way farther inside. Oh, look at all the cute little owls! She was momentarily distracted by a particularly small one flittering around in a cage to her left when she remembered why she came here. Making her way to the merchandise, she perused the treat options. Which one should she get? Plain? Vitamin? Fruit? Adam didn’t say!

Desiree took off in search of a shopkeeper to help her, and as she did so, she noticed a boy much younger and smaller than her looking at one of the owls. Probably starting Hogwarts this term, she thought. Never one to turn down the chance to make a new friend, she stopped in her tracks. OWl treats could wait! “Hello,” she greeted with a friendly smile. “That’s a lovely owl. Are you going to get it?”

Yoji chewed on his lip, thinking of all the possible cons of owning that particular owl, and to be honest, he couldn't really think of any except for its diet. He would have to go out of his way to get the right food... maybe he would have to ask whoever will be taking care of the owls in Hogwarts to give it particular care. Perhaps that's what's bothering him? That he would ask someone else to look after it?

Deep in his thoughts, Yoji didn't notice he attracted company. Startled, the tiny Japanese boy gave an automatic bow of his head and took a step aside to get out of the older girl's way. Wait, was he in the way? Oh, maybe she is the shopkeeper? Probably! "A-ano..." Yoji reached for the back of his head, forcing his brain to switch his language to English. "I don't know yet, it is... ano... a bit expensive," he said looking back at the owl. "Would you know if fish owls are good for international travels, misu?"

Desiree watched, slightly taken aback by the younger boy’s reaction to her presence. Poor kid! She didn’t mean to startle him! She had to admit he had excellent manners, though. The head bowing got a warm smile. How very princely!

She considered the boy’s question carefully. Her experience with owls was limited to the Hogwarts owls and her brother’s pet. She knew Adam’s owl was fine for international travel. It made the journey to and from France many times, but he had an elf owl, not a fish owl. She would think that fish owls were good for international travel too. If they were allowed at Hogwarts, it stood to reason that they’d be used to deliver mail, and she doubted this shop would sell a kind of owl that wasn’t allowed at Hogwarts. Wait, was that even a thing? She’d never heard a rule that you could only bring certain kinds of owls.

“Sorry, I don’t work here,” she replied with a shrug. “I think they are, but I don’t know for sure. Would you like me to ask a shopkeeper for you?” She needed to find one anyway so she could ask her questions about treats.

“I’m Desiree, by the way. Desiree Marchand. What’s your name?”

Yoji quickly bowed an apology for mistaking her for the shopkeeper. For one she sort of dressed like the part? And second, she was a lot older and much taller than him, automatically assuming she had some authority over the place. To him, at least. "S-sumimasen..." he whispered, then looked back at the owl. It's too bad he didn't have access to owl breed information, but he knew a thing or two based on what his dad said. "A-ano... my touchan... dad said that I can get any breed, except for the smaller ones if I want the owl to deliver long distance," he said, looking at the older girl. "He didn't say international." because long distance could simply mean, the next continent. He needed an owl that could travel all the way to Japan. If possible. Oh, and introductions! Bowing his head, "Nice to meet you, Dezire-senpai." yep, he did butcher her name. English was hard!

Summer was one of Aurora’s favourite times of year, although she was a particular fan of spring.. and autumn.. oh and winter. The reality was that every day was a good day in her bluey-green eyes, an advantage of being a positive person with a sunny disposition. The biggest problem she had with summer was the inability to skip down the corridors and accost a friend. It didn’t even have to be a friend, it could just be an acquaintance. Who was she kidding? It could be a STRANGER and she would engage them in an hour long conversation about whatever nonsense was swishing around in her mind.

Clearly the whole stranger danger conversation had been lost on her.

Aurora had only grown a little (an inch if you just know) since the start of second year and so buying new robes wasn’t on her agenda but still she had convinced her Ma to take her to Diagon Alley just in case her old robes would be too short come the start of third year. The whole ‘convincing’ thing had gone as far as persuading her Ma to let her go to Malkins herself with the promise that she would return in exactly one hour for the journey home. The only problem was that the Ravenclaw hadn’t even been able to go as far as the clothing shop before she got distracted by something or other.

On this occasion it was Eeylops Owl Emporium which took her fancy, particularly the pretty little Barn Owl she could see through the shop window. Into the shop she went approaching the beautiful feathered creature before her. “Hello friend!” Evidently even owls weren’t exempt from her plentiful conversations.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Rowan was getting through her shopping list swimmingly and was almost ready to call it a day. But there was one last thing she needed before heading back to the Leaky Cauldron and flooing home. An owl. Communications were near on impossible from her muggle home to the magical world. And now, more than ever, they were essential.

She had refrained from purchasing one in the past—she wasn't keen on having a large bird living and preening itself and hooting and pooping in her room and in the vicinity of her bed.

She sheepishly entered the shop and.. there was a smell. Not an unclean smell, but the smell of livestock.. and droppings. She made her way over to the owls and stood and surveyed them, unsure of what would be the best choice. Something that would get along with Helix her cat. Something quiet and well behaved. Something that wouldn't disturb her slumber.

She was drawn to a tiny owl with a lightly coloured mottled breast and red feathers down it's wings and back. She looked at the name. 'Chestnut Backed Owlet.' hmm.. It looked a little like her with it's fiery feathers. She reached out a finger, slipping it though the bars of the cage, and--

“OW!”

She tore her hand away and looked at her finger, clutching it with the other hand. The thing drew blood! BLOOD. The owl turned it's back on her and she sighed, moving away from the creature.

Clearly it wasn't meant to be.

For anyone wondering, toads required much less upkeep than an owl. Usually, his toad, Goliath, was the only beast that Solomon Duck had to tend to… (no real ducks either.) However, this day, his father had given him the task of restocking owl supplies for their family bird. Horrible, withering thing that Solly would suggest didn’t have many more good years left in him. The only comfort it brought him and his father was it being something special to Solly’s late mother.

Otherwise, you wouldn’t catch Solomon in this mangy place, and he almost skipped over it completely to prioritise Quality Quidditch Supplies, but could have sworn that he had seen his girlfriend Aurora head inside. Of course he would follow her, although once entering he was very overwhelmed by the sight of a bajillion-zillion owls as well as the stench they had, that he forgot that he was even following Aurora.

He, too, was drawn in by the tiny owlets, because they were almost… cute. Nothing like Olga. He saw the whole event of a girl putting her finger into the cage (dumb) and then proceeding to get bitten (duh).

Solomon was about to snigger but then caught sight of her nursing her bleeding finger. Redder than her hair! “Aw, man… are you okay?” He stepped a little closer so she could hear him over the racket of the store. The sight of blood did make him a little queasy, though. “You shouldn’t put your fingers into the cages, want me to get the shopkeeper?” Hark at Solomon being courteous. Randomly he remembered Aurora being in here somewhere and glanced around quickly.

There was too much going on!!!!

It had been a good twenty-five years, at least, since Brian Woods first stepped foot into Eeylops Owl Emporium and left with his absolute best friend, Hermes the Barn Owl. It had also been several years since Brian had last stepped foot here, after Hermes and Hoot (his favourite person in the world, aka his wife's owl) passed away. He'd put off the prospect of getting a new owl for years, citing the fact that he didn't have anyone to owl or that he didn't feel ready to replace Hermes, but today was the day.

Today was the day not because he was ready (maybe he would never be), but because today wasn't about him. Today was about his favourite eldest daughter. Yes, he only had one eldest daughter. That made her his favourite by default. Yes, it did work like that, actually.

And so it was that Brian Archer held the door open for his wife and eldest child, now about to head off to Hogwarts. "Last chance to decide you want a two-way mirror, Peach," he said, trying very very hard not to let his voice crack with emotion. Mostly successfully. But he was just joking -- he knew that Ascella wanted an owl, and had for some time now. It's just that having an owl meant that she would be far away enough from him and technology that she would NEED an owl and he just wasn't ready for his baby to leave home, okay?!

He was big emotions today and maybe he would need an ice cream later.

Yes, he was, in fact, a big baby.

Don’t you worry Solomon, Aurora had been practicing her keen awareness skills and was able to spot one of her bestest friends from across the shop. Or rather she was just an expert at being nosey and the need to be involved in absolutely everything. Despite how pretty the Barn Owl she was currently ogling was, friends were even more important. Especially friends who came with NEW people she hadn’t met yet and therefore could acquire into her group whether they wanted to be or not.

With a little hop skip and a jump, she landed inches away from a display of owl cages that were stacked neatly behind Solomon and which rattled a little as the creaky floorboard she landed on shook under her feet. “I see you!” she giggled tiptoeing to wrap her arms around Solly from behind. She was considering sneaking up on him but she would leave that for when they were back at school.

But now that accosting Solly had been completed, it was time to turn her attention to the red headed girl he was talking to. “HI! I’m Aurora and I’m one of Solly’s bestest friends. Did you get bitten? Sometimes the owls can be a bit temperamental especially if they’re hungry. You should give them a treat as bribery” she grinned, glad to be able to dish out useful advice.

Or at least she thought it was useful advice even if it wasn’t always accurate.

Yes, he was, in fact, a big baby.
Last chance? No, thank you.

"Two-way mirrors don't hoot and ruffle their feathers, though, Dad," Ascella replied to her daddy, letting out a soft laugh because of course she knew her dad was only messing with her. She had considered how much convenient a two-way mirror would be, but she wanted a pet. She always had. As a kid, Ascella fake fed her stuffed turtle, Ella, at home and talked to her about anything under the sun, even when she knew she wouldn't get a response or a reaction. So this decision was easy to make, and she knew she won't regret it.

With the door now open, courtesy of Dad, the eldest Archer kid walked into Eeylops, gently tugging her mum along by hand. "What species would you recommend?" Ascella looked up at both her mum and dad. She had a short list of owl species that she liked, but there were many factors to consider and, since Mum and Dad knew more about taking care of owls from their experience, she trusted them.

Ascella Paige Archer was very serious about her soon-to-be role as owl owner, can't you tell? Just wait until she tells her younger siblings everything about this trip when they arrive home!

Or at least she thought it was useful advice even if it wasn’t always accurate.
Still clutching her finger, Rowan was feeling overwhelmed. Whatever little appeal the idea of getting an owl had held, it had now gone bye bye. AND she was aware that someone was watching her. She tried her best to look nonchalant. No big deal. No big deal..

But Merlin, she was glad she'd had her tetanus jabs.

Her gaze fell over the other owls. So many of the things.

Her cheeks pinked when the watchful someone moved closer and addressed her, drawing attention to what had just happened. A boy. Clearly he had witnessed everything. “I'm fine.” She said, a nod of the head. “Thank you though.” Non bleeding appendage reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear. She didn't like being seen as flustered. Rowan was usually as cool as ice. And in reply to getting the shopkeeper. “Oh.. no. No thank you. No fuss please. It's just a scratch.”

The boy was around her age by the looks of him. Another Hogwarts student? Perhaps this boy was an expert in owls and could advise her accordingly. Why else would you hang around Eyelops? “Do you know much about owls?” Hopeful, she gave him a small soft smile.

She was about to continue and state what she was looking for. It would have to stay with her in the muggle world in her bedroom and would need to be quiet and not make a mess.. when suddenly they had more company. This time, a girl. An excitable and affectionate girl.

Quite the contrast to Rowan.

Solly, she presumed, was the boy with the mop of curls. She looked from him back to the blonde, bubbly girl, and was actually appreciative for that advice. It made sense. Animals were fickle beings, but you could buy their love with food? “It looked so soft. I just wanted to touch it. Silly really.” She addressed the pair. This was good. They could both help. This Aurora girl seemed like an expert. “Aurora and Solly.” She mentally jotted their names down for future reference. “I'm Rowan.” And despite feeling a little foolish from what had just transpired, it was nice to have company and guidance in here.

“Do you both go to Hogwarts?”

Solomon nodded, satisfied that the girl wasn’t about to drop dead, although he wasn’t entirely sure about after effects of being bitten by an owl. Did she need to get a shot? “No problem.” If he knew any healing charms you better believe he would offer to help further.

Me?” Solomon scoffed, “nah, not an expert. Got a problem with a toad, though… then… well actually, I’m not much an expert on those either in all honesty.” He scratched the back of his head. As previously mentioned, toads didn’t require much tending to. “I’m just here to pick up some things for my dads owl.” THEIR owl, supposedly.

Are you going to buy one? Perhaps you should avoid that one, I don’t think it likes you,” he wiggled his finger towards the one that had bitten her and chuckled lightly.

Moments before Solomon was about to become very overwhelmed with his surroundings, the person who had brought him here made her appearance. It felt awesome to see friends out of school, especially bumping into them unintentionally. He smiled as she wrapped her arms around him, then swung side to side like a see saw while she was leaning against his back. “Oh, hey, I was looking everywhere for you.” Not really. Truthfully he had become too distracted but he wouldn’t admit that. Her introduction of being one of his bestest friends made him feel a little.. shy in front of the new girl. He hadn’t even introduced himself by that point, actually.

Solomon Duck,” he added his full name, because it felt appropriate. “Yeah, we do.” He looked quickly to Aurora then back to Rowan. “Do you?” He didn’t recognise her, but he quite easily could have just missed her face.

Summer time meant that the Emporium was going to be busy tenfold due to the students of Hogwarts trekking in. Rafael had had a few summers working as an owl caretaker at this establishment under his belt so he was more than capable of always attesting to the busyness around this time. Stuffing his dragonhide gloves in his pocket, he made his way towards the groups of students already milling around. Now, while Rafael was not overly fond of kiddos, he did his best to channel his boyfriend, who found the patience to deal with them on a regular basis.

“Did I hear correctly? Did someone get bitten?” Rafa questioned, having caught the girl’s {Aurora} asking the question to one of her friends. “I can take a look and have the wound fixed.” Had he been a newbie at this, the twenty-nine year old would have surely panicked. Not that he hadn’t during his first summer at the Emporium and the exact thing had happened with another student. “You three thinking of getting your very own owl? Or do you need some treats?”

Families of witches and wizarding browsing Eeylops was something Rafa saw regularly too. Normally, he simply observed them while staying in plain sight in case they needed his help. The reason was that most times, each family member was preoccupied with feeding advice to the person seeking an owl about which type to get.

So when the girl asked her parents that exact question, Rafa swallowed his own suggestion and carried on refilling water troughs.

It was a good job that Aurora didn’t get seasick with the way that Solomon was swinging her side-to-side with his body tilt. She let out a giggle and untwined her arms before bouncing next to him and looping her arm with his. “How did you know I was here? Are you following me? Did you put a tracker on me?” she fake gasped. It wasn’t like it was that hard to spot the blonde despite what she lacked in height for she made up for her vertical challenge-ness in many other ways.

Mostly in her enthusiasm. EVERYTHING was exciting.

Back to the girl who Solomon was talking to. Aurora resisted the urge to touch her pretty red hair. She had a ‘thing’ about wanting to braid everyone’s locks and redheads looked particularly good with fishtails. But her sister had warned her that a lot of people didn’t appreciate her invading their personal space and so she’s have to make do with just looking at it instead.

“I get that urge to pet things too!” she grinned. Beasts, beings.. hair. It all looked so soft and touchable even when she knew they had a bite. “Hi Rowan! Yes I’m a Ravenclaw and I’ll be in third year and Solly is a fourth year and he’s a Slytherin but that’s okay we don’t hold it against him” she giggled, teasing her friend and leaning her body weight against his shoulder for a second. “Are you coming to Hogwarts too?! You ARE new yes? I’ve never seen you before and I pretty much know eeeeeeveryone.” That was a lie but Aurora did have a habit of latching onto older students even when they didn’t want her company and so HER perceived circle of friends was huge.

Whether it was reciprocated was an entirely different matter.

Then suddenly along came an adult and the thirteen year old blinked at him for a few moments before realising that he worked there and was offering his assistance. “I already have an owl. Her name is Flora and she’s a Little Owl.” Not that he had asked any of those questions.

Much like Brian, Isobel was finding this particular trip to Diagon Alley very bittersweet. Hoot and Hermes had been part of their lives for so long that it still, even years later, felt strange that they no longer were. There were times, even, when she thought she could hear them hooting or the sounds of them moving in their cages. It was strange... Reminders of them were all around her, especially here (of course). Thankfully, though, she was able to compartmentalise. No doubt she would unpack all of her emotions later that night with Brian, but right now she focused on her daughter and the look in her eyes as they approached the shop.

“Ascella makes a very good point,” she said seriously, meeting Brian’s gaze. Her tone was light, though, playing along with the joke. The things Ascella said – and all of her children, really – always amused her, and this was no exception. The way children looked at the world was fascinating. They were always making points that she hadn’t even thought of herself. Isobel supposed this was because they were able to look at things without getting caught up in all the details that adults did. They always cut right to the chase, for better or for worse.

For some reason, this was the thought that had Isobel choking back a hiccup of a sob. So much for compartmentalising, she thought. Still, she smiled through it all. Look how grown up her baby girl was! She was endlessly proud, and she would be here all day if she thought about all the reasons why.

“That depends on you, I think, love,” she said in response to Cella’s question and gave her hand a squeeze. She had no doubt that Ascella would have done her own research and, really, she wanted her daughter to trust her own instincts, but she could easily understand why she wanted their opinion. “Do you know what temperament you want?”

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

It was nice that this boy was showing concern over her injury and not just laughing at her. The boys at her muggle school wouldn't have been so kind. There was always raucous camaraderie there. The blush faded on her cheeks. “You're kind.” She stated simply. He was a chatty sort, and that suited Rowan very well, being the quiet sort. “Well.. I'm afraid I can't help you with your toad either.” She laughed lightly. “I'm not a creatures expert. The only pet I have is a cat.” Very generic, but Rowan adored her little Helix and was so relieved to find she could take him to Hogwarts with her. If she failed in making friends, she would at least have the furball to keep her company.

She looked at the army of owls again and nodded hesitantly. “I need one.” Unfortunately. “..So I can communicate with home when I'm at school.” She looked at the small owl, still with it's back to her. “I like a challenge. But I think you might be right.”

She looked from the touchy feely girl to the boy. Were these two boyfriend and girlfriend? They seemed very.. close. 'Solomon Duck' - Rowan actually grinned at that. “That is a fantastic name.” She meant it genuinely. Was Duck a wizarding name? She'd never ever heard of it before, but it was delightful nonetheless. “Do you prefer Solly or Solomon?”

“I'm starting in September.” She replied to the pair. So, no, she didn't have a house yet. The girl was Ravenclaw? She must be intelligent. “I'll be going into fourth year.” Like Solly here. “My mum was a Gryffindor.. but I'm not sure I fit the bravery requirement.” She chuckled softly. Hufflepuff material? Nahh.. “I'm pretty sure I'll be either a Ravenclaw or Slytherin.. but who knows.” A shrug of the shoulder. “So I might be seeing a lot more of one of you.”

She had almost forgotten about her bleeding finger when the shopkeeper approached. Feeling embarrassed all over again that he'd overheard things, she raised her hand, blush rising in her cheeks once again. “That was me.. Sorry.” She added the apology, knowing full well she shouldn't have been sticking her fingers into the cages. She held out her finger to him, which had now stopped bleeding, but it still stung and burned.

“I need an owl.. but I really don't know where to start.” She informed him softly.

Woops-a-daisy!

Had he forgotten to make it known that he worked here yet again? Folks, I kid you not, but Rafael was notoriously famous among his coworkers for this. Oh well. The important thing was the visitors to Eeylops eventually figured it out, much like this young lady {Aurora} who was happily telling him about her owl. “Flora sounds lovely already. How old is she?” See, one of Rafa’s absolute fave things was learning about the owls that were the companions of any human.

Was there ever the need to be embarrassed about being nipped by an owl. It happened to the best of them, even to caretakers. Rafa had a few healing wounds to prove it; one might think that being a caretaker would mean he was a pro at avoiding being nipped, scratched or pecked. “No need to apologise, young friend.” Rafael examined the finger. “Good news! It doesn’t seem as though there will be any lingering scars. May I?” He gestured at her hand, seeking permission to hold it. “I need to clean the cut first then we can put a bandaid on it.”

Unsure of the type of owl she wanted? Rafael smiled, having heard these words ever so often. “Are there any breeds you’re particularly fond of? If not, I suggest a barn, or tawny owl. Any owl of any species you choose will make a remarkable companion.” Trust him, he would know as he and the other trainers worked hard to ensure each of Eeylops’ owl were well behaved.

Hogwarts RPG Name:
Sloane Aubrey Knott
Slytherin
Fourth Year
Default Open to anyone

As she stood outside looking in at the sheer volume of owls that sat in row upon row screeching and squawking, Sloan knew this was what she wanted more than anything from her trip to Diagon Alley, except maybe a wand but that went without saying. Looking through the glass, her nose almost touching it, she watched them in their cages as they moved, stretching, longing for the freedom that came with the open air. She could relate. She missed her family but all in all, was happier now than she’d been in a long time, even if it wasn’t going to last forever.

Unable to simply stand outside any longer, the soon to be first year Hogwarts student gingerly entered. Unlike how she’d entered Ollivanders, she pushed the door open hesitantly, not wanting to startle the birds on show here. Even as she did so however, it became clear to her that the other families and their children were far louder than her, infinitely more annoying and definitely more distracting. Her meagre entrance hadn’t even solicited more than a glance from one or two owls it seemed. She didn’t mind. No. Soon, she’d have one of her very own!

Even from a young age, Sloane had prided herself in her ability to talk other people into doing the things that she wanted. It was a gift. She always knew the right words to say at the right time. Despite this, even she had been surprised at how easily Zoryn and Faith had agreed to buy her an owl! Sure, she couldn’t complain when they didn’t buy her something else she wanted, but there wasn’t anything else she really wanted and if there was…well, her pockets were pretty deep.

Swerving in and out of the people already in there, the dusty blonde eleven-year-old headed straight for the rows of cages. She simply had to get a better look. It was almost overwhelming how many different types of owl was on offer and the colours they came in! She really had no idea which one to get because in truth, she would have taken them all if she’d been allowed. Still, she had a limit of 10 galleons so the real question was…which two owls would she buy for 5 galleons and how long would it take her guardians to say no?

I’ve never seen you before and I pretty much know eeeeeeveryone.” That was a lie but Aurora did have a habit of latching onto older students even when they didn’t want her company and so HER perceived circle of friends was huge.

Whether it was reciprocated was an entirely different matter.

Then suddenly along came an adult and the thirteen year old blinked at him for a few moments before realising that he worked there and was offering his assistance. “I already have an owl. Her name is Flora and she’s a Little Owl.” Not that he had asked any of those questions.

Solomon shot a look over towards Rowan when the shopkeeper came over asking about her bite, knowing that she didn’t want him to see or fuss. He would’ve said something but he felt that would probably cause even more fuss. See? He was smart sometimes. “Already got one, too.” He said flatly to the shopkeeper. “I just need some treats, the ones with the added vitamins.” Because they did care for it really.

Woah, woah, woah… FOLLOWING her?

I was NOT!” Solly replied a little defensively. And no, they weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend but Aurora was one of his girlfriends, if that made sense. He didn’t really have guy friends, oddly. “I saw you and thought I’d say hello, but then I got, erm… distracted.” As per. If Aurora was kidding then it had gone completely over Solomon’s head.

He chuckled a little, not because he found anything funny, though. “Uh, yeah, what she said.” Although he didn’t much appreciate the comment about his house. “Hey, being in Slytherin is cool.” Cooler than being in Ravenclaw but he wouldn’t say that to spare Aurora’s feelings. Something she should try!!!

As Rowan’s blush faded, Solly’s own cheeks reddened upon hearing the words you’re kind. It was something that came quite naturally to him, actually, he had a lot of empathy but only when he was paying attention. However, it being brought up was a little embarrassing. “Thanks.” That’s all he could decide to say really, but he smiled. “So are you.” This was improvement over his usual response to a compliment of “not as [insert adjective here] as you.” Poor Anna had received that a few times.

No,” he laughed a little, “me neither. Wait until you have to deal with the Monster Book of Monsters every creatures lesson.” Well, not every lesson, and perhaps she had seen said book before. Solomon hated dealing with the thing. He pointed to a sleeping owl beside the biting owl, “That one looks alright.” As okay as an owl could look, that is.

All this talk of books about monsters did beg the question of where Rowan went to school before starting at Hogwarts, but conversation soon changed to houses, then remembering that Aurora had already introduced his house. “Well I’ll save you a seat next to me if you did get the pleasure of Slytherin.” No doubt Aurora would smother the girl if she ends up in Ravenclaw.

His smile disappearing slightly as he wondered if she was low-key making fun of his name. He was soooooo used to that. “Happy with either but everyone chooses Solly, usually.” Apart from Anna. Everyone else were people who couldn’t make it to the end of his name.
