Fancy yourself a great skier, or perhaps just someone who enjoys the adrenaline inducement of a good ole' race? Anyone who wants to participate in the race can do so. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be given. The race will be begin about two hours into orientation. So grab your gear (your own or rented!) and get ready. On your marks...get set....

OOC: How will it work? Each participant has to post between 3 times and roll a random number generator [link!] and have it set between 1-20. The person who has the least amount at the end of all their posts will win. The race will last OOC for most of the "retreat" so that anyone who starts posting late can partake in the race. Ties will not be broken. We will have the announcement of the winners at the end. Anyone who does not post three times will not have their scores counted; these posts can be as creative as possible, and feel free to interact with other racers. But as your character finishes, please be vague as to where they finished (because we won't know yet). Any questions, please feel free to contact kayquilz.
He was the best at skiing and duh. This was why he thought the retreat at a ski range would be just the best idea in all the world. In all of the UK, the ministry, etc. He had his skis at the ready, a serious look in his lopsided eyes, and as soon as the horn sounded to denote the take off, Morgan Pumper NICKELS WAS OFF!
Moving his ski...stick things (because who had time to learn the technical names) he glided quickly over the snow, not caring who in the world HE MIGHT HIT WITH HIS SKI STICKS IN THE PROCESS.

Lucas was not that good of a skier, to be honest. Yet he wasn't sure why in the name of Merlin he was here at the race. "You're here to embarrass yourself, that's what,'' the guy chided himself. "Newly promoted to Division Manager and you'll have the newbies of the Department laughing at you.'' Then there was the other side of him that was chanting, "LIVE A LITTLE, LUCAS HAWTHORNE!" The latter was the side he had obviously given into.
Lucas tried to maintain his proper balance with the rented equipment and when the horn was sounded, he desperately tried to push off. And he did! Though rather slowly at first. And in the process he, only managed to get himself whacked in the shins with one of the Minister's sticky things.
Being on skies was not what West would call a good time. However, he really wanted to get the full retreat experience. He strapped on a pair and lined up at the starting point. He had to take a few deep breaths to psyche himself up, and let go of the fact that he would much rather be on a broom than skies.
"Three, two, one, GO!" he chanted and he took off down the mountain. The cold wind was stinging his freshly shaven face and he wished he would have grabbed the ski head cover the young lady had offered him at the equipment rental kiosk.

He had never participated in a ski race before, but it probably induced the same feeling of adrenaline rush and excitement as quidditch did, he hoped. If he was good or bad at skiing remained to be seen.
With his helmet on, his skies strapped on and ski sticks in hand Jake stood next to the others and then when the horn blasted he pushed off down the mountain. Before he got very far he felt how the Minister's stick thingy slapped him on the left arm. "Ouch! Hey, look where you're aiming and going!" Jake shouted hotly over to the older guy.
Skiing on and coming up next to a guy he deemed to be near his age that looked sort of ample on his skiies he called over "Hi! Got any good skiing tips?"

Ethan Mordaunt's in the house PEOPLE! He'd been a mess all week trying to get his excitement a notch down, but to have this kind of welcome back party?! His success rate was 0%. He'd have to apologise to Josie again for keeping her up almost every day because of this.
But LOOK THERE ARE PEOPLE ALREADY AND YES HE'S GOING TO WIN THIS RACE! Okay, maybe not. Maybe he should try to be fair to these guys 'cause he's been doing winter sports before he could even talk. Ethan was the king of the half-pipe and the snowboard course. Skiing? PSSH. Easy-peasy for this guy.
Ethan in his full snowboarding gear approached the starting line and gave heys and hellos to all who was present. Not wanting to waste any more second, he strapped his ski boots onto his skis, moving his legs forward and backwards alternatively to get his skis a good grip on the snow. "See you all at the finish line!" Ethan pulled his mask over his nose and mouth, and his goggles down to his eyes. The CMEC specialist bent his knees, and pushed himself off the starting line with his ski poles when the horn was sounded.
Wooooossshhhh!!!"WOOOHOOOOO!!!"

As if there was any other place that Chloe Adara would be besides a competition? The former Gryffindor might not have been an experienced skier (or like EVER skied!), but anything that had to do with potential prizes and glory, she was ALL in. Every time.
And it seemed it had started already, which only meant she would have to work faster and hopefully not crash into any trees in her haste.
Whoosh! Down the hill she went, focused solely on not crashing into anyone or anything and speed.

Logan wasn't the best with skiing, even considering going to Durmstrang for all of those many years. The school had even had their own ski team but the one thing Lo had learned from them was to keep her body low to the ground while going down hill…low, and tight.
It was chilly, as she made her way to the. Top of the hill and waiting for her turn looking over she spotted Jake and gave him a small wave. "congrats Jake! We'll have to catch up later!" she. Grinned before tucking her body and tacking off in a somewhat fast but messy fashion.
don't fall. Don't fall was all that chanted in her brain as she raced toward the bottom of the hill. "DON'T FALL"

West was thankful to still be upright. After almost dropping one of his ski polls and nearly having to go back up the mountain for it, he was finally getting into a good groove. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed another man quickly coming up to his side. "Haaahaahaha!" His deep booming laugh echoed down the mountain. "My best tip is hang on for dear life. This is my first time skiing since I was nine. I'm maybe in a bit over my head in this race."
He squatted down a bit more to keep his balance over his skis. "I'm West. Magical Games and Sports." He started to lift his pole to shake hands, but thought better of it. They were hurtling down a snow and ice covered mountain, and racing, there would be ample time for more formal greetings once back at the lodge. Yes, the lodge. A place he was hoping to be sooner rather than later and without any broken bones.
Morgan hadn't noticed hitting Lucas in the shins, nor would he have card. This is serious business this is.
LOOK WHERE HE WAS AIMING?!!!????!!!!
He shot a glare at the Jacob fellow and had half a mind to hit him again, this time on purpose! "YOU WATCH WHERE YOU'RE AIMING, NIMWIT!" he bellowed.
He picked up speed! He flew down the mountain! Everything was happening so FAST! He seemed to be in the lead but, you never knew what could happen! It could all go downhill - quite literally! - at any time!
Hurtling down the mountainside was great…Logan heard the sound of the Minister's voice yelling at someone - hey, that wasn't cool. With a slight turn to keep off of the icy snow Logan felt her speed pickup and then she watched in awe as she seemed to be passing the Minister.
Digging the tips of her ski-pole into the snow she pushed forward and zipped (only slightly) past him. Still, she was going fast - very fast…so fast, this was exhilarating and nerve-wracking and still she was chanting don't fall and now don't die in her head as she went down the hill.
Closer, she was closer and closer to the bottom with every second. "Hello there," she smiled back at the Minister in a kind fashion.

Well, was it really possible to scream audible words when one's hurtling downward so fast? Ethan thought it was impossible, and all this thinking and analyzing slowed him down! Oh no! Digging his ski poles into the snow, he used his momentum to go even fast and catch up to all those people who zoomed past him. Maybe it wasn't his day? Maybe it was his skis? It didn't feel like it was gripping the snow like it should, and it wasn't helping him pick up a good, stable speed downwards.
See, if this was snowboarding, this would've been easier, and he was sure he'll make everyone eat snow along the way.

Okay, so this Ministry was already proving to be a different animal... She would have enjoyed a quiet orientation at the actual Ministry, but she was here to enjoy herself all the same. She had a little experience skiing, but really it was just enough to be able to get her bearings. She made her way from the rental kiosk, and got everything secured on her person. With plenty of questions still in her head about this whole... resort thing... instead of, you know... their jobs... she tried to push the thoughts back, and arrived at the starting line. And she was off!

It probably wasn't advisable to get in a testy argument on the first day of his new job with the guy that employed everyone. He really wanted to though and he chanted silently "I'm not a nitwit."
Remembering snowy winters at Durmstrang Jake kept skiing on and he had somewhat figured out the use of the ski sticks when he heard Lo's voice. Turning his head momentarily in her direction he beamed, his cheeks rosy with the cold and wind as he called over. "Thanks Lo! Maybe we can meet up by the hot chocolate bar later and chat? Stop chanting don't fall, it's better to chant I'll make it down or something else positive." Accelerating his speed Jake hoped he wasn't going to fall head first into a pile of snow before the finish line.

I'm Jacob, but most people call me Jake and I'll be working in Games & Sports too." As they hurtled down the snowy and ice covered mountain Jake called over curiously "How did you learn to ski West?"

Jake's words of wisdom were nearly missed due to the way the wind tunneled around her head. The air, everything was making it hard to hear anything except for the scraping of her skiis against the snow…well, that scraping cutting sound that always came about whenever she mucked up and hit ice.
Noooo…ICE, ice wasn't fun it could throw you for a loop or well send you tumbling into the fourth gate of your slalom run…few, her heart settled as the irritating scraping noise cut away and she was again racing down on the packed powder.
I can do this she thought. "Thanks Jake," she called out happily as she neared the finish line. She was. Almost there, almost, only a little further - there was no way she was first right?...but, at least she had passed man that called her friend a nitwit.

Okay, she definitely wasn't about to win this race... but it was all in good fun! At least that's what she would say when she got to the end. She had gotten a decent start, and was making her way down with limited issues. She was quite competitive, and although she could become quite... well... ugly in competitions of any sort, Ava tried not to show it at this point. She observed those around her, including the Minister who was yelling at his employees?? Huh... Was that how he treated everyone?? Ava looked away, and was trying to follow close enough to get an edge on the wind resistance. She could feel the chill air hitting her cheeks, and she was quite grateful for her ear muffs. After this, perhaps she would go get something warm to drink. She thought about the sauna, but she would wait until later. Okay, mind back on the race!
"It's a pleasure, Jake." He said, once again fumbling with his ski poles. He never understood why poles were needed. Sure, they did help you get going, but they seemed to be in his way the entire way down the mountain. Now, snowboarding, that was a much better way to race. Much more similar to being on a broom, using your body to lean and control the direction.
He laughed another booming laugh at the next question. "Well, I never really learned how to ski. I tried a few times on holiday, when I was much younger. Never really got the hang of it." He noticed his new work companion pulling a head of him, "How about you? You seem quite at home on these sticks of terror."
Looking down the mountain, West noticed he was falling far behind the lead skiers. The fact that he was losing was not a big deal to him. He was far more concerned with the possibility of crashing and breaking bones before his first official day on the job. He was normally very athletic, but there were certain sports he never got the hang of.
Ava was getting the hang of this again... She felt the grooves in the snow from those who had gone before her. Yes, her cheeks were freezing, but she smiled with sudden awareness of the excitement, the adrenaline, running through her. She had already accepted that she wouldn't be first, but maybe she could be close? Maybe they could race again?? Show of hands?! ...How were people able to say they were racing if they were talking to each other? Ava noticed a few around her doing this, and she wondered why they didn't wait until they got to the bottom to speak. She was all for making conversation with her new coworkers, but was now the best time? Not if you wanted to win. Not at all. These were probably the same people who slacked off in the office too, doing an hour of work and taking a three hour break. Hmm... She hoped to be wrong, but she would be keeping an eye out either way.

Lucas had long forgotten about the Minister and eventually everyone else around him. His only focus was not to go crashing into anything. So far, he was doing just fine and he was quite surprised with himself. This was easy after all, it seemed. Just like his beloved Quidditch.
Down and down he went, the cold air slapping his face. Thank Merlin he was protected somewhat by goggles and a thick woolen scarf.

Durmstrang even had its own ski team and competition. It some years ago now that I went there but it seems the memory and skills I had back then are still fresh in ski memory. I take it you went to Hogwarts?" Nicely put there Jake.

Though his speed wasn't increasing, it wasn't decreasing either. He was holding steady in last? place. Jake was pulling a head a bit more and he couldn't hear any skiers coming from behind. He really was just thankful he was still upright. He gave another good push with his poles, wondering if he should be using them at all, and continued down the mountain.
Drumstrang. So Jake was a fellow Drumstrang student. Not that he would have known him. It was possible they had passed in the halls at some point. Jake looked to be somewhat close to West's age. "I technically graduated from Drumstrang. But, I spent most of my school years at St. Mungo's in London. What year did you graduate?" The accident. He really couldn't go into detail while trying not to end up back at his old hangout racing down the mountain. Those were dark days. Days he wasn't sure if he would walk again. He even still limps when it rains.
Eyeing a bend in the slopes before him, he leaned to the left to keep centered on his path. He could just start to see the top of the lodge and little dots moving about below. Hot chocolate and a warm fire were in his near future.

Why were his skis not working??! Ethan made a frustrated grunt as he felt his calves start to burn. Okay, maybe skiing was harder than snowboarding, but his rented gear just wasn't doing its job! Wait, perhaps, it's because of the snow on this slope! These races needed a good powder, and by the looks of it, the surface wasn't as fresh as it's supposed to.
Huh. Perhaps that geezer up ahead had been practicing prior to the race, disturbing the powder along the way!
With determination on his masked face, Ethan pushed further towards the other skiers, literally leaving them behind a dust of snow as he swished and swerved downhill.
Merlin, if he were riding his snowboard, he'd be at the finish line in no time.

Lucas was not sure he enjoyed skiing very much. Plus the cold wind... it stabbed him in the face like as though it were a million daggers. Still, he was impressed with himself. Despite sometimes veering in the opposite direction that he had intended and having some close calls with other skiers, he had managed to keep it together.
He was pleased.
Down he continued. Lucas could see the finish line. Closer and closer... and he crossed it!
The new Division Manager for Games and Sports was glad that was over.
