It was a cold January morning but Kaysha was prepared. This sort of weather called for a roaring fire which was exactly what she had taken the time to set up. The windows were all tightly shut and so the room was warm though it would not hurt if the students kept a coat on. The class’s setting was the same with the rows of desks separated by a mini pathway so that the room seemed to have been split in half. Today, the entire lesson would be conducted within that room.
As you approach the class, you would notice that the professor is not stationed at the doorway to greet you. Instead, she was sifting through a stack of papers The few on her desk were faced down, however. Whatever could be printed on them? Was it pertaining to the lesson? Would the woman let you take a peek to find out before you head off to your seat?
OOC: Hallo! Welcome to another lesson! Have your charrie react to the papers, the warmth of the room or whatever else pleases (or displeases) them We’ll get started in 24 hours. Please remember to read the rules before posting! CLASS HAS STARTED!
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Holding the Muggle studies textbook in his arm, Mason had walked from the Ravenclaw Common Room all the way down to the first floor to get to the classroom. He had recently found a short cut behind a tapestry and because of this he was a bit early at the door.
He was so early that the Professor wasn't even standing at the door... entering the room, the seventh year found the Professor at the desk seemingly going through a stack of papers. Was he THAT early that she hadn't finished setting up her class yet?
Walking towards the desk, Mason looked over her shoulder to check what the papers were but sadly they were faced down. "Need help, Professor?" he asked, finally announcing himself.

Zoryn was SOOOooOOoooooOOOOO tired.
Man. There was no way she'd be able to last ALL DAY LONG. So when she remembered she had a Muggle Studies lesson this morning, the entire Gryffindor tower probably heard her groan (they had pretty good acoustics up there). Nevertheless, she was able to drag herself to the classroom, by the miracle of Merlin tbh.
She was too old for this. She was almost 13.
"Hi, Professor," she smiled unenthusiastically before turning to find a desk. BUT before she began to walk away, she turned back to face her Professor once more. "I'm like SUPER tired, Professor. And no offense but by process of elimination, your class is the one I've got to take a nap in." She nodded VERY enthusiastically this time. "So you can't get mad at me, 'cause I warned you!" She added the last bit as an after thought. Y'know, just to be safe.
And now she was ready to go find a seat.
Boom.
That's how it was done, folks.

Why was it so cold in Muggle Studies that they NEEDED that roaring fire just to make it through class? Katy clutched her cloak more tightly around her shoulders as she slipped into a seat in the middle of the room. She didn't want to make a big deal out of sitting near the front, since this was one of those classes she didn't understand as well as she should.
"Good day, Professor," Katy gave the woman a polite nod and tried not to show too much curiosity about the papers on her desk. They'd know soon enough, right?

First Floor Muggle Studies Classroom…yep, just like it normally was. Cassie didn’t mind change and how professors liked to shift things around or try different locations, but sometimes it was nice to enjoy the familiar. And in the case of the warm fire present in the room…those constants that were used to keep them all comfortable and toasty in the height of the winter months. The one thing different was the professor wasn’t at her usual perch but at her desk seeming somewhat distracted by papers.
“Good morning Professor,” she greeted the woman nevertheless with a polite smile as she moved towards said desk before moving off to take one for her own use. Curious…just what was on those papers that had her interest?

It had taken Stasya a second to remember that she wasn’t supposed to go outside for the next Muggle Studies lesson. She’d half expected that she’d need to go outside, considering it seemed like a lot of the other lessons had been outside lately. Not counting the ones that had to be outside, like Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures, of course, but she’d managed to stop herself from going out to the barn after breakfast just by the memory that the lesson wasn’t outside. So she could be late if she’d gone out to visit the creatures, which meant she’d just have to go later.
Instead, she’d turned up the staircase after she’d left the Great Hall and made her way up to the classroom, still bundled up as if she’d been going to go outside. “Good morning Professor Stewart,” she said with a smile as she’d finally made it to the classroom, walking over to an empty seat. “Are those for the lesson?” The papers she was sorting through, because of course she was curious as to what they were. But she also wanted to make sure that there were seats around hers for when her friends arrived.

Scotland in January.... gotta love it huh? not
But the Gryffindor Ace was all bundled up, layers of fabric and charms to keep heat in and the cold out. As he strode his way into the classroom he glanced at the pretty Prof "Mornin' Professah!" As for her paperwork? He didnt ask, just went about towards his desk. He's a curious boy, but not nosey.
Also if that was last week's homework its best that he not pry into that lest she scrutinizes his work. Shhh.

For one thing, Olivia Phillips was DONE with this weather. However, Muggle Studies was something Livs did best and for that reason alone, she'd dragged her sorry self down to the First Floor for class. Appropriately bundled up, the blonde sashayed into class, looking just as exhausted as she felt. Probably.
OWLs would be the death of her.
"Professor Stewart."....and Professor Stewart's...papers? With a barely concealed yawn, the Gryffindor went about finding a seat, feeling none-too-interested in whatever it was that the older lady was looking for. She was too tired to care in the way she normally would have, apologies.
Also, she'd be sitting with Stasya today. Hello, ickle!

Etta, wearing layers of clothing as usual, made her way to her next class as she wondered what they'd be learning in Muggle Studies that day. It was an interesting subject and she was beginning to enjoy it quite a bit. She entered the classroom, feeling extremely glad for the warmth. The prefect noticed the professor shuffling through some paperwork, curious to know if they were for class.. but it was none of her business so she just remained quiet.
"Hello, professor! Hope you're doing well today." Etta greeted with a smile, before finding a seat somewhere near the front. She took of her coat, hung it over the back of chair before plopping down. Pulling out a parchment and a quill, she started to doodle as she waited for class to begin.
Having gone through three colds this winter (definitely a record!), Kitty was very glad that Professor Stewart had prepared a fire for this class. The windows were closed too, which would preserve the heat. Thank Merlin!
She made her way through the little pathway and moved towards Stewart's desk, where it appeared she was going through papers. "Good morning Professor," she greeted her politely, wondering if she'd be scolded if she took a peak under the papers. "Would you like help sorting anything out?"
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
She wasn't feeling Muggle Studies today...in fact, the Ravenclaw wasn't feel any of her lessons; not since she'd gotten back from the winter break. It'd been going well until it hadn't and the adjustment was going to take some....well....adjusting to.
Jessa slipped into the classroom behind Etta, muttering a polite greeting to the Professor without really paying attention to anything. The fact it seemed warmer drew her attention briefly to the fire by the fireplace. Those weren't as bad she supposed because of the direct ventilation that removed the smoke but she WAS starting to wonder why all the Professors were using fire as a means of insulation when heating charms were a safer option for all present. She supposed it was necessary for Defense Against the Dark Arts that time and Pyromancy did require fire in Divination. It got her curious about whether this lesson would require fire as well.
Silently, Jessa slipped into the seat by Stasya and Olivia, offering them a small smile before focusing on the sheets of paper.
Was this like a pop up quiz of sorts? Had they been meant to do some extra reading? Ugh, she was not prepared for this today. Could they have another week of vacation? Or two--two would be optimal.

First floor classes were the BEST. Vivian always looked forward to Muggle Studies because of the simple reason that it was one of the nearest to her common room. As usual, the Slytherin skipped her way to the first floor and into the Muggle Studies classroom. She greeted Professor Stewart -- apparently, there's TWO of them! -- with a beam and a wave of her pointer finger. "Good morning, Professor!" The blonde said and went over to find a seat... before she realised her Professor wasn't even at her usual spot.
... Huh. She placed her bag on the seat she had chosen. "What are those papers, Professor?" Curious Vivian was always asking questions. "D'you need help?" Because this blonde was willing to lend a hand!

Viv thought the weather was very cold. She thought a fire would be wonderful and Professor Stewart was doing just that. She wasn't scared to wear a coat in this cold weather. The classroom look still the same. The desks were lined up and precise.
It was so weird that Professor Stewart wasn't in the hallway greeting the class. She was looking through a pile of papers. Hmmm... what could they be? Maybe an essay? Could it be homework? Or was it some type of notes?

Shay couldn't wait for spring. She was so tired of being cold. It was ridiculous. At least she had Muggle Studies to take her mind off of the weather. She entered the classroom, rushing once again. For some reason, she had been getting to class later and later these days. Not good.
"Hello Professor", she said as she moved by quickly. Shay found a seat, pulled out her things and got herself ready for class. Once she had done that, she could finally breathe. She made it.

“So far, so good,’’ Kay thought to herself as she scanned each sheet. She wanted to make sure everything had been printed exactly as she had wanted. Yes, this was her second time she was checking them. Talk about being thorough, right? Hearing the voice of one soon-to-be graduating student, the woman looked up. “Oh, good morning, Mr Winslow! There was no time to get back to her papers for little Zoryn walked in looking quite tired. This puzzled Kay. Had she been up all night occupied with something else? Nevertheless, she smiled warmly. “Hello, Ms Spinnet.’’ The woman remained silent while she listened. “This is out of the question. I suggest you head to the bathroom to wash your face. My lessons are not for anyone to take a nap. I’m afraid if you do nap, I’ll have to deduct points and ask you to leave the lesson.’’ There was no point in being present if sleeping was going to be done instead of learning.

“Welcome to another Muggle Studies lesson, everyone! I trust that you are all enjoying the competition that has been ongoing thus far and are continuing to display proper etiquette on a daily basis especially with our guests. In keeping with the trend of American topics for the lessons, today we will be discussing American English.’’ Kay moved to the whiteboard, uncapping it. “Those of you familiar with Muggle subjects studied in schools will be aware that there is one called ‘Grammar’ where the focus is on English. This lesson will be similar to that but the difference will be us not focusing on British English. So not only will we be focusing a little on the early Muggles that aided in pioneering American English, we will also be having a lesson much like one that takes place in Muggle schools. Isn't that exciting?'' She beamed around at the room. The kiddos were at leas a wee bit excited, yes? It wasn't everyday they were getting a lesson like the ones thought in Muggle primary or secondary schools!
"That being said, English is the most used of languages in the United States and this was due to the British Colonisation of the Americas. Though the early Muggles- English settlers- first arrived in the seventeenth century, new dialects have been developed over the years due to other settlers from various backgrounds. Just to name a few: German, Dutch, Irish, Spanish.’’ The woman listed these on the board. “I’m sure that some of you have had trouble understanding our visitors’ words at times because of their accents or because they use different phrases or words from us. After this lesson, it is my hope that this will change.’’ Kay paused briefly to look around at her students again. “Over the years, the American English has seen changes which saw new American Englishes: Mid Atlantic- mainly on Philadelphia and Baltimore; Midland- Indianapolis and Kansas City; and Inland Northern- Chicago and Detroit. These are some of the main ones.’’ There were many other dialects and it would certainly take a bit of time to go through them all. However, it wasn’t the history of American English that Kay wanted to focus on.
“To start our interaction portion of the class off, we will focus on spelling. Can you lot list American words that are spelt differently from British words but they refer to the same object or thing? Please remember to raise your hand first so I can call on you!''
OOC: Howdyyy! Class has officially started hereee so no late arrivals should be posted now (or they can be and there will be IC consequences ) We'll resume in 24 hours! <3

Well it seemed that Shay had made it with not a moment to spare. As soon as her textbook had touched the desk, class was in session. So they would be learning as if in an American muggle school. Shay wasn't exactly excited about that. She had finally escaped American muggle schools and now she had relive it? Her mood brightened when she discovered what they would be talking about. Shay was fascinated by the differences between American and British everything. Words, food, humor........everything
To make up for her almost tardiness, Shay made it a point to raise her hand immediately. This was a topic that she could comment on. "I can think of two words off the top of my head. Honor and honour, favor and favour. That extra u likes to pop up in British words." That was one of the things that Shay had had to get used to upon her arrival at Hogwarts.

The lesson was going well so far, thought Viv. Everything was printed perfectly. It was checked twice. It had to be perfect! She looked up at Professor Stewart in awe. Mr. Winslow was kind but Professor Stewart had it covered! He was so kind.
Zoryn was a tired student. Professor Stewart was puzzled. Professor Stewart also looked exhausted. Professor Stewart gave Zoryn her warm smile. Zoryn Spinnet listened to Professor Stewart. Zoryn's face was a mess. This was a lesson, not a house dormitory. She knew where Professor Stewart was coming from. Sleeping is done in beds, learning is done in the classroom.
Professor Stewart was furious at Katherine, a Slytherin. The papers had information on them about the lesson so she was impatient.
Next Cassandra arrived punctually and she took her seat.
Next was Stasya Dalgaard-Volkova. She thought the papers were for the lesson. She was right.
Next was Tenacius Salander, a Gryffindor 5th year who was full of energy. He had a secret honestly. He was was definitely ready to take the day on, wasn't he?
Next was Olivia Phillips, who was tired and Professor Stewart knew OWLs were coming up. Again, she was a napper. She told him to wash his face if he needed it.
Next was Etta Kramer. She was punctual and Professor Stewart walked away from her papers. She didn't mind. Etta was well this morning.
She was excited for Muggle Studies. She was moving on with American topics: American English. Professor Stewart moved to the white-board.
SPOILER!!: Notes on American English
One of the Muggle subjects that was covered was Grammar, which is focused on English. The difference will be not focusing on British English. So not only will the focus be on the early Muggles that aided in pioneering American English but having a lesson that takes place in Muggle schools. That's exciting.
English is the most used of languages in the United States and this was due to the British Colonisation of the Americas. Though the early settlers arrived in the 17th century, new languages have been developed over the years due to other settlers from various backgrounds. To name a few: German, Dutch, Irish and Spanish. Some of our vistor's words have been hard to understand because of their accents/because they use different phrases/words from us. After today, this will change. Over the years, the American English has seen changes which saw new Englishes: Mid-Atlantic, Midland and Inland Northern for example.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Mason simply nodded his head after the Professor had declined his offer to help and turned around to find a place to sit. More students had entered the room by this time and the seventh year sat down at a desk near the front row.
As he sat down, he had wished he had taken his book with him he was currently reading but he had left it under his pillow because he had two free periods when this class was over. Of course, they were for his planned studying for his N.E.W.Ts but he had also planned a half hour free reading in.
Luckily, it didn't took long before class begun because with a book, Mason was usually bored out of his mind while waiting. Oooh! He knew where this topic was going! The Professor had told him personally that they would be covering this one day.
He thought back to their conversation. He was sure she had told him some examples but which ones were they again. He thought and thought. Had almost given up when it came to him. "American's say sweater and we say jumper!" he said excitedly , it was rare for him to answer in Muggle Studies so he had almost forgotten to raise his hand which he did but AFTER he had answered the question.

Katy grinned at the subject. Not specific to Muggles, but at least she could speak on it a bit. She'd been spending time with a particularly idiotic American lately, and it had not gone unnoticed that he had some bizarre sayings and spellings of which she'd taken note.
She raised her hand. "Professor, what about grey? We spell it with an 'e', and the Americans spell it with an 'a'."

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... Zoryn did her best acting, trying to pretend like she totally understood everything her Professor was going on about. But in all honesty, it kind of seemed like a suggestion. Sure sleeping and class weren't really supposed to go together. BUT LIKE, WHY WOULD SHE HAVE CLASS SO EARLY?
This was TOTALLY the Professor's fault !!!!
Just sayin'.
So no, Zoryn didn't go wash her face. Why the heck would she do that??? It's splash all the tired away and that sounded AWFUL because Zoryn needed REST not an abrupt wakeup. Plus, her face would look wet. And that was SO not the move.
Instead she went and sat down, waiting for the lesson to begin and trying SO hard to stay awake (for now). Point deduction didn't really sound that bad tbh. Might even be worth it. She could not, however, find a way to explain to her Head of House as to why she skipped class. So unfortunately for everyone, she was stuck in this classroom until the lesson was over (which would hopefully be soon because this chair was growing comfier by the second).
And instead of answering the question, she just YAWNED. And did her best to cover her mouth as she did so. Ahem. She wasn't trying to be rude.

Ooooh, English. How interesting. Etta noted down all the extra information that the professor mentioned first. She'd need these notes for OWLs anyway so better to be prepared, yeah? Then, she considered the question. After spending quite a bit of time with the Americans lately, Etta had noticed a few differences obviously. She raised a hand before answering the question.
"Uh. The word 'colour', professor? We spell it 'colour' and they spell it 'color'." She'd noticed a lot of pronunciation differences as well but decided to stick with one example for now. The girl sat back against her seat and listened quietly to the other students give their answers.

Goodness, what was up with Skylar lately? She used to be early for all her classes and while she wasn't arriving late, she was arriving with barely anytime to get settled before the Professor started the lesson. This was so unlike her and the fourth year had to wonder if this was going to be the remainder of her Hogwarts education. No, no, she just needed to get a new system down. Her classes and subject matter was getting more challenging, so that just meant she needed revise her study timetables.
And it seemed the topic of choice today was American English versus British English, to which Skylar felt grateful for Brent and Felicity right about now, because of what she'd already learned from them and there was still much more. They were referring to spelling differences first, which meant while chips and fries referred to the same thing as she recalled from her summer lunch, they were different words, so that didn't count, did it?
Someone mentioned the U added to certain words, like honour and favour. And Etta mentioned colour and Katherine mentioned the gray versus grey.
Raising her hand, once she finally had an example, Skylar spoke up, "The thing with American English compared to British English is that American English spelling simplifies things and its very pronunciation based. British English prefers the original spelling, so like the word 'cheque', referring to examining something in order to determine its accuracy or quality, is spelled c-h-e-c-k with American English because that's how they sound it out, but it's c-h-e-q-u-e with British spellers." And that was way more information than she intended. Alright, Brent. Felicity. You two should be proud!

With a nod to Jessa, who'd joined her and Stasya not too long after she'd taken her seat, Olivia immediately began zoning out. Again, she didn't care about the papers...since if it was important, they's learn about it soon enough. What she DID care about, however, was that she'd skipped breakfast and her stomach was choosing that exact moment to make its annoyance known. It was growling pretty loud...
SIGH.
Resting her forehead on the table surface, the blonde exhaled a shaky breath. She'd have snack after class. It wasn't the end of the world. Oh, and Professor Stewart was speaking to her....about washing her face. Um, no. No, thank you. Did the older lady see this eyeliner game? These wings hadn't created themselves. Nor had she woken up with this dewy glow. Makeup was hard at work here... "Thank you, Professor Stewart." Though Liv would not be taking her up on the offer, it was still considerate.
....and because her stomach was still LOUDLY protesting... Olivia tried to keep her blushing to a minimum. Gah, how much trouble would she get in for eating a snack in class?....because...she was pretty sure she still had those granola bars from last week in her bag...
Gurgle, gurgle...
"Crisps, Professor Stewart. They are called potato chips in America." And Liv knew this because she'd been to Disney World in Florida, with her father and Rooney, and there were loads of vendors that sold that type of thing. Fizzy drinks, lollies.... Oh. "...and I think they call their food items other differing names like 'soda' for a fizzy drink, and chips for 'french fries."............but aaaaaaaaaalso..."Many of our words contain the u because that is the original spelling, as our words came first." England was settled before the Americas and everything, so... "Anyway, I think American English changed because of the person who drafted their dictionary."
What? She paid attention to history things. "I don't think this affects our world too much, magically, because our spells are in Latin." Though, it would've been more interesting to discuss spells across languages, depending on where they were created.....Alas, Muggle Studies.

Noelle had managed to slip into the class right before she could be considered late. It was due to prefect duties though. She'd been helping a younger student whose spell had gone array.
Blushing because she was standing when the professor started speaking, Noelle slid into a seat beside Shay. She gave a little finger wiggle to say hello before pulling the necessary things out for class.
American V British seemed to be the topics most popular now. Noelle wasn't sure how Americans spelled things differently than they did. So instead, she listened to others. Hearing things sparked something to Noelle.
"Oh! They do call biscuits, biscuits. But our biscuits are definitely way different than their biscuits." Only reason she knew that was because someone had asked for a biscuit in the GH and when she'd given it to them... they'd ask what it was.

Apparently, there was an 'include America in all lessons' streak in classes lately. Not at all surprised, Vivian tried to see if this had anything to do with the fact that there were Americans here from Ilvermorny. Perhaps their presence sparked the topic for today? In fact, it wasn't just Muggle Studies in this regard, but also History of Magic. Though, well, it made sense that these two subjects just had to do something related to them.
Still eyeing the stacks of papers on the desk and her mind sort of flying around wandering what they were for, the Slytherin blinked and looked back at the Professor when they were, also apparently, attending a grammar/English class. Hmm... what? That sounded weird. And yeah, she totally didn't know any of those American cities that the woman mentioned. Whoops. But she thankfully had ideas regarding the obvious difference, considering she had talked to an Ilvermorny student before -- just one, but that makes a whole lot of difference for the blonde -- and so Vivian didn't feel lost and clueless in today's lesson. The blonde raised her hand to share. "The Americans don't seem to like the letter 'U', Professor. They always seem to drop the letter when spelling some others," she said, nodding along with her answer. "An example would be 'favourite' and 'favorite'. We spell it with the letter 'U', but they don't." That was funny. Both words sounded alike, so it was confusing.
Teehee.
