Who wanted to be 40 before they even hit 30?
"You do, you really do. You almost sound like Professor Bellaire." And no, being her son wasn't all the excuse he needed. If he'd had the joy of sitting through her lessons like she did, he'd understand it wasn't a compliment either.
"The good thing is, you're an Auror now. You can't afford to take life too seriously because of how serious the work already is. You're gonna have to unwind somehow." Or not then go completely mad in the head. It was his choice really.
Tyler kicked at her foot under the table and fixed her with a slight frown. "So are you." She was excused from life. Hogwartians were so rude. It was nothing one could chock up to being blunt (that was a Durmie thing), they were just an uncultured sort, he found.
"I sound like my mum?" He asked incredulously. "I can't say that I have ever heard that one before. And strangle enough I don't think it's a compliment." He'd take it as one though because he had never in all his life and in all that he had seen, met anyone fiercer than Sophia Jane Bellaire nee Wright....except maybe for her mother Miss Cherry. She was a close contender.
"Who says I don't unwind with the right people? I find I just don't like most of the sort I interact with."

Oh. Her heart... she could hear it splintering with every nose blow she took. It was not a good day. In fact, it seemed like the worst day ever in her entire existence on the planet and judging on the pile of used tissues before her, it probably was. It didn't help that people kept throwing glances at her as she went about her weeping session, especially the staff people. She was going to buy something in a while, all right?!
But for now, let her vent out her misery. It was still lunch break which meant she still had half of the day to work. She had to be at least presentable went she went to the Ministry.

By lunch time it had felt like Logan was swimming in paperwork up to his ears. It was high time to get out of his cubicle when the letters on his parchment started to blend together. Leaving the ministry he had thrown on a dark green jacket and black gloves on his fingers against the February cold. Logan was usually a warm person but not when it came to his fingers. They always got cold fast.
Entering the bakery several minutes later Logan pulled off the cap from his dark blond hair as he headed to the counter to order a soup with bread for lunch. After paying he headed out among the tables to find himself a table in the busy bakery.
As he walked between the tables it was hard not to overhear the sobbing and nose blowing coming from a blond woman sitting by herself at a table with a pile of used tissues in front of her. Other guests were repeatedly throwing glances at her and as well as the staff. Turning on an impulse Logan walked back to stop in front of the woman asking quietly "Are you all right?"

She was going to... She didn't know what she was going to do to that man. It was enough that he called off their engagement, he didn't have to do it in the middle of the day when she still had to work. It was a good thing that she took her lunch break when she did, at least no one from the Ministry would be witnessing her bawling like a baby.
She still didn't know what she was going to do. Move out of the apartment first probably, which meant that she needed to find a new place to live...and without even at least a week's notice! How dreadful.
It made her sob more.
...Did her vocal chords finally got tired of her sobbing that its turned her voice into a manly timbre?
Oh, wait. That wasn't her. That was entirely someone else.
Someone who was asking if she was all right. "Well of course I am not all right," she started, and was about to rant about how sensitive this person was when she finally looked up at him and immediately realized, "Merlin's boots..." *sniffle* "You're a Ministry person." She knew because well, she just knew. Own kind and whatnot.
This has officially turned into a miserable AND embarrassing day.

When Logan on impulse had made his way over to the woman he had already figured out like the rest of the bakery staff and guests that she was very much not all right. It also took no genius to also puzzle out that someone or something was the cause of the pile of used tissues. Not knowing the blond, Logan slipped into the seat opposite her at the table and ignored the snappy retort she fired at him. That was part of the hurt she was feeling, probably meant for someone else entirely.
Her second comments though made his eyes dark blue eyes grow a bit as he asked curiously since, he couldn't help it. "So what if I am a ministry person?" He briefly glanced around at the other guests around them, that had seem to have lost interest in the sobbing for woman for now before Logan commented quietly eyes back on the woman. "If it weren't for the pile of tissues and loud sobbing noises then nobody would have known that you were upset and given you looks. You're face doesn't show it." Except for some redness around her eyes and nose but that could have been just as easily written off as the result of a bad cold.

So what if he was a Ministry person? "Well, it's bad. You're probably going to report to my Department Head how miserable I am making myself look in front of this...muggles. I'll be the laughingstock of the Ministry!" She was not a judgmental person, per se, but she was currently in distress. The pessimism was inevitable.
Jenny sniffled again and took another another tissue to pat on her cheeks.
At the man's next comment, she scrunched her face in confusion and bit her bottom lip. "Should I take that as a...compliment?" She was tempted to let a little smile slip at the absurdity of it, but she wasn't sure if he was just humoring her or what.

Bewildered Logan stared at her for a few seconds before he asked "Why on earth would I do that? I don't know you or in what department you work at the ministry. Even if did know all those things then what would I possibly gain by reporting on someone that is miserable over someone or something that is totally irrelevant to your job? That'd be cruel and pointless and I'm not cruel." What did this woman take him for? He was a good guy not someone who took pleasure in other people's misery. It went against his upbringing. It didn't matter if he was cruel to someone he knew or if it was to a complete stranger, if his mother found out she'd be disappointed and Logan wasn't going to disappoint her if he could avoid it.
He was silent when the servant arrived with his chicken soup and garlic bread. When the servant had left Logan said "It was meant to be compliment. I'm Logan by the way." It was okay to smile even if the woman across the table didn't seem to think so. He had just tried to lighten the mood.

That was...a rather long speech. Jenny was staring at the man agape, drying tears still marring her face. After realizing the truth in his word, she sniffled into a tissue once more and looked down. She felt small at the moment. She should not have let her feelings take over her words. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean that. I just..." Few silent tears fell down her cheeks. "It's been a long, bad and tiring day." And no, she didn't think he was cruel. Well, most of his species were cruel. But probably, just probably he wasn't one of them.
She quickly wiped her tears when a staff came bearing food. Jenny it wasn't for her so she also looked the other way.
...
She didn't question the compliment further and instead accepted it because it made her a feel a bit better. "Thank you, then." His name was Logan. Jenny nodded and slowly pushed her pile of tissues to the side so he would have a bigger space to eat. "I'm Jenny."

Logan cursed himself silently. He had shocked the woman with his little litany which was clear by her staring eyes. It was a miracle if the woman didn't shed more tears and this time because of him. Feeling bad Logan apologized with a faint smile pursing his lips. "I'm sorry too. I didn't intend to react so um strongly." It was just, she had managed to hit a sore spot. Sympathizing Logan nodded "I get that. I know we've just met but if you want to talk about it I could listen if you want?" He was by no means a relationship expert but he could lend an ear. But he was there. And since his soup had arrived he had something to occupy his hands with.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Jenny and you're welcome." Logan saluted with a piece of garlic bread. "Where do you work? I work on level 3 as an obliviator." Gesturing to his soup he asked "Aren't you going to eat anything?" Digging his spoon into the chicken soup Logan began to eat.

Jenny couldn't help snorting when Logan offered a listening ear. It was sort of funny. She had to relive her misery in front of a man she just met? "It's nothing big, really. My fiancee...ex-fiancee...went to see me this morning to...call off our wedding."What an egotistical pig."He's apparently been cheating on me for months and I didn't have any idea." Maybe she did, but chose to ignore those warning bells because hello, blindly in love. "To top if off, I am now...homeless. That's it, Logan."
...
She sniffled once more, wiped her cheeks and took a shaky breath as he answered his current companion's question. "I'm under the Department of Magical Transportation." As for eating. Well...she didn't really have the appetite. "Don't worry about me. I'll probably eat something later." Key word was probably.
So. He was an obliviator. Maybe he could help her get rid of the hurtful memories?

Being stuck in a stuffy office all day didn't have the most perks to it, and while Sherman enjoyed his job immensely, it was night to get out once in a while. Especially when that situation involved food. BAKERY food. Count him in.
It wasn't easy to maneuver his wheelchair out and about, but a trip to Pequod's was always worth it, was it not? Even in this chill.
Deliciousness, here he came!

Maybe he had just a been a bit too hasty with offering to listen to Jenny's miserable tale. Unfortunately though he had offered and now Logan had to come up with something sympathetic to say. Carefully putting his spoon down on the table he said "I'm sorry but if your ex-fiancee did that to you then you are better off without him. He is clearly not worth spilling tears over." The dude was clearly not marriage material either. "And don't blame yourself for not seeing the signs. It will not do you any good." Logan commented. Could Jenny try and cheer up now? At least some of the wise things about relationships he had been told had registered. But if he had been in Jenny's situation he'd probably have shed tears in anger too. "You're homeless?" he repeated surprise etching his voice. "Don't you have any friends or relatives you could move in with?"
...
Logan ate more soup in silence as Jenny wiped her tear streaked face and draw a breath. He raised a brow at her mention of where she worked and commented. "I met your boss Ms Purcell during Orientation. She is special." Suppressing the urge to grimace in disapproval about her eating Logan said with gesture to the bread in the basket next to his plate. "At least eat some garlic bread. I can't possibly eat all pieces anyway."

Logan was right. Nixon was not worth it and Jenny knew it. "I know, I know that now." She said in a small voice. All along she knew that Nixon's confession of love after a few months of knowing each other was too good to be true. She got blinded by all the words and then chose to stay blind. That was what pathetic, hopeless romantic women who believe in the chance to get to marry your very first love do. Right now that was what Jenny was feeling - pathetic, especially since her companion had once more reiterated to her that she didn't have anywhere to call home in this country. Maybe she should just find a portkey back to Portugal. "Well, I moved in with him when I got here so..." Jenny bit her bottom lip as she went on, "No relatives that I know of...but maybe I can ask some friends from the Ministry to let me crash on their couch for a few days 'til I get my own place." That was the plan... She could probably ask Rose or Michelle...or even Lynley.
...who was apparently special according to Logan. "She's...unique." Nodding and smiling despite herself because that thought of her Department Head just fitting in was not tolerable, Jenny decided to pick up a piece of garlic bread and bit into it. "Fine." She had a feeling he was going to insist.

Logan was not a relationship expert far from it actually. He had though picked up a few things since he had started dating and what he didn't know his sisters had drummed into his head. Like that you always had to DTR eg. define the relationship. Which he knew was important but hardly after say the third date. Focusing his attention on his table companion again Logan asked "So you're not from England originally?" Hence why Jenny know had nowhere to live and without relatives in the area it was no wonder that she felt miserable. Not sure what to say Logan said just to say something. "I really hope one of your friends has a spare room or a couch to loan out." Otherwise the only other option was renting a room at the leaky cauldron.
Smiling he agreed. "Yes your boss is quite unique. So how did you end up in transportation? What do you do there? Work with portkeys?" It was that or apparation or floo Logan supposed. Or carpets of course but they were still banned from use weren't they? Picking up his spoon again Logan ate more soup as Jenny helped herself to a piece of bread. You had to eat even though the situation was miserable. It was just how it was.

If Logan's strategy was distracting her from her dilemma then he was doing a good job at it because Jenny felt preoccupied with eating her bread and talking to him. "No. I'm from Portugal...Olá. How about you? You grew up here?" ...Nodding in agreement, Jenny gave her companion a somewhat forced smile. She really had to practice her independence now.
Soon her smile had turned from forced to a real yet small one. She's great, that Miss Purcell. [b]"Apparition actually, I'm currently a practical examiner...formerly, I was brooms liaison but it didn't pay well as much." How did she end up with department, hmm? "And um, I played chaser for the Braga Bloomfeet so really, the department seemed fitting for me." Logan's turn. "You said you're an obliviator...why...be one?"

Logan appeared to be doing something right since Jenny seemed to relax when he pulled the conversation away from her miserable dilemma. Nodding he said "Yes I grew up here in England. I'm half English / half French since my dad was from France so I speak French and English fluently." But not Portuguese or was it Spanish they spoke there? Smiling he asked curiously. "Apparation, then you teach people how to apparate properly to avoid splinching?" Maybe Jenny went out to schools and such?
Brows shooting up in surprise Logan asked "Really? You played chaser for a professional quidditch team? That's super cool. I bet you played quidditch in school too?" And then of course Jenny turned the question back on him. "Well I've always liked challenges and puzzles and figuring out how things work. The brain is a mystery in itself that has always fascinated me. I applied to the French ministry when they had an opening for a junior obliviator position 4 years ago now since I got intrigued by the job and the responsibility it puts on you when you work with people's memories. And then I moved back to England a year ago to be closer to my family and joined the A&C department when they had an opening as obliviator. So basically i work every day with people's memories in different and situations and I like it." Grabbing a piece of bread from the basket Logan started to chew on it.

Half english AND half french? Well, wasn't that quite a mighty combination. "Really? I've always wanted to learn French." She wanted to learn a lot of languages, actually. Jenny finished off the bread she was munching on, grabbed another tissue to wipe her fingers and nodded at Logan's next query. "Mhm. That's my job. You would be surprised how often we have to contact healers to take care of splinched takers. Not...a great sight."
...
"I did and yes, of course.. I played in school too. My brother was the one who ultimately influenced me. He's a quidditch facilitator now." Ah...his brother, Julian. He was so not going to be happy with what's happened. Merlin, how she missed him. A bit distractedly, Jenny forced herself to listen to Logan. This man was actually cool, it seemed. Did he say he worked with people's memories every day? "You do? That's...quite a job you have. Sounds pretty exciting to me. But that also means you're dangerous." Weren't they good at erasing memories and stuff? Definitely dangerous.
Galen had held off on lunch for as long as his stomach was going to allow and now that he was no longer busy it was the perfect time to grab a sandwich, and a newspaper. With copies of both the Daily Prophet and the local Muggle paper tucked under his arm he entered the cafe ordered a sandwich and took a seat.
"French is a beautiful language. If you want to learn French then maybe see if the International Cooperation department holds any courses in French." Logan suggested thinking of Charles who had met at the Orientation event. An ambassador probably knew plenty of languages that he could teach to others if work permitted. He had the instinct feeling that if he didn't practice or use French in some form either written or spoken then Logan would start forgetting it over time.
"I can imagine. My grandfather on my mum's side has told the same splinch story from his youth to all children of the family when they've reached the age to pass their apparition tests. Hearing how my grandfather splinched off all the fingers on his left hand at least got me super motivated to pass my test without even splinching off part of a fingernail." Shudder. That story had been quite effective though since Logan and his siblings had passed their tests with flying colours.
"I played Quidditch in school too but I never pursued a career in it. What is a quidditch facilitator?" A team manager? Logan had no idea. He wasn't as invested in the sport as many of his friends were. Jenny knew obviously though with her background and brother working as one. Smiling Logan nodded. "Yes working with memories is exciting but it also gives you a resposiblitly towards the persons who's memory you are erasing or adjusting." It wasn't something he did lightly. Raising a brow he considered Jenny's statement. "I haven't really looked at it like that. But i don't see how i'd be more dangerous than an auror or a dark wizard? I don't mess with people's memories unless I have to."

Gavin allowed himself to be pulled from the office, finding it more than a little amusing he'd been invited to 'lead the way' shortly before practically being yanked along. No comments on the wards and such being replaced as they left. It'd taken everything in him to make her not go overboard with their house and even THAT was debatable.
"Brilliant morning...until they brought in this year's interns." He fell in step with her as they made their way down the hallway. Did he mention that he didn't miss this place? He did? Good.
"I think I need it to be August already." So they could go away of course.
....
Emily hardened, her gaze narrowing at Gavin somewhat. A nice person? She was hardly that. And in fact, she didn't by any of it. Despite some people growing perhaps a little too comfortable in her presence, she still had the ability to make others sweat. "Your gross exaggerations are doing you no favours, dear," she replied sweetly, shrugging it off. He was welcome to continue making such claims, though he might not like the outcome.
Nevertheless, they had made it out of the Ministry and into the muggle world without beginning stopped once. His fears were for nothing.
Interns though, that was unfortunate. "How many? For how long?" There were rumours flying about that interns would be gracing the Ministry, and she sincerely hoped it was a joke. Their work was not for the likes of children, at least she wouldn't be entertaining the notion - not unless their sole purpose in life was to make her coffee, in which case, depending on their talents, she might take one up for laughs.
Squeezing Gavin's hand as they neared the Bakery, Emily scanned the outdoor setting before glancing into the window. It was such a nice day out, they should enjoy the sun. "It'll be here before we know it," she replied regarding August. Time was something she didn't have much of these days, but she could always made exceptions, and France was usually that.

For all the sweetness Emily had put into the statement, the man could detect the intention. This only had a faint smile rising on his features. "A bit early in the afternoon for threats, wouldn't you say?" His tone was enough to give away the fact he wasn't bothered. Emily had been threatening him for as long as she'd known him. One would think by now he'd have either thrown in the towel or developed an immunity.
Inside, Gavin led them to counter taking the liberty of ordering for them both. It was very likely that after having so many meals with her, he'd know what she preferred. Order put in, he leaned against the counter, attention back on her. "Four of them, fresh out of university, dumber than a sack of flobberworms and just about as useful." The expression on his face went perfectly with his words. He was not impressed.
"With a bit of luck they should be out of our hair by mid-August. I dread to think of leaving them in the lab while I'll be away." He wouldn't suspend France plans by any stretch of the imagination, but he was now worried about the chances of coming back to any lab and employees at all.
"And you?" A glance was given over the counter, just to see how much longer their order might take. "I'm firmly of the impression that if I'd only been a YATI you'd have taken my head off for knocking. Busy day?"

If she had been looking at him, she might have clipped him at the ear, but as it was she was blissfully ignorant to his smile. And say what he would, time was irrelevant. "No time like the present I say," she mused, sounding equally not bothered by his tone. He was still in her good books, he was the exception.
Emily followed along, content with observing their surroundings, exits etc while Gavin ordered. As much as she sympathised with his situation, it was also mildly amusing, but to think he had to deal with four of them... well that she might have to go easy on him in the coming weeks - if the interns lasted that long. "I'm sure they'll learn a lot in your presence then." Flobberworms did have their advantages, they were excellent for squashing - something she would like to do to a YATI or two.
Mid-Aust couldn't come sooner then.
"Ban them." That was the solution to his lab problem. Ban them. Send them home. No touching. No meddling.
When the question was retuned to her though, she couldn't help but shake her head lightly, exhaling a breath to emphasise her displeasure. "Depends on which YATI you were," she noted. There was one in particular that was on his last legs, and she wouldn't object to cutting them out from beneath him. "Poorly trained, undisciplined, unmotivated praise seekers." Granted, not all of them, but even one was too much. "That... and I forgot how much I dislike bureaucracy."

She shouldn't be nervous, no, she had been at the ministry long enough and manager long enough that meeting with owners and managers was nothing new.So why with this particular owner was she always nervous. It couldn't be because he was one of her favorite players and she had a slight crush for years and years. No, that really couldn't be it.
Ha
Moving into the cafe Victoria looked around and regretted the location. No, she should have had the meeting in a nicer place. The restaurant was all booked for some odd reason, so the cafe it was. Placing an order and gathering a few coffees and pastries she found a seat near a corner.
Beck was excited about his date with Brody today. He had showed up an hour early because he had to go by the Quidditch shop in Diagon Alley to pick up a few things and by his youngest son Sebastian need a broom. He was going to get him started early with Quidditch like he did with Jacques who at the this moment was now on his way for his third year at Hogwarts and his daughter Daytona would be there for her fourth year now. Beck really didn't get to see Daytona that often because Nekoda was always so busy when he wanted to contact her during the off season.
Now things for him were getting busy again too with the new Quidditch season. He couldn't believe it was already that time to go back to work. Beck had been putting in extra hours on the pitch, he wanted to be on top of things for this season. Beck walked into Pequod's cafe and found a table and a seat near the window. He set his bags down on the side of him and wanted for Brody to arrive, he knew that he was still a little early but that didn't bug him on bit.

It was kind of nice to take a break from home and the pitch. It was also a good opportunity to get some distraction. Xavier knew he was being a sap and all with Cornelius heading to Hogwarts, but what could he do? It wasn't like his heart was made of stone and wasn't going to miss his mini-me. He was. Even if they didn't see eye-to-eye most times. Not only that, but he was worried and kind of excited. His little go-getter was going on to explore the world. What with that dazzling smile the boy inherited from him, he was going to be trouble.
Good luck, professors!
Peering inside the window of the café, Xavier had no issue finding Victoria. He was good at memorizing faces, some more than others, and he remembered hers clearly. Heading inside, he waved at her along with a smile as he approached the table. "Good day, Victoria." Xavier Baltazar was in the house. That's still cool, okay."How're you?"
