He took a bite of his croissant and finished his coffee. And then just kind of... looked at the man across the table from him. He sounded surprised. Which was somewhat offensive. "So... January didn't tell you?" He wasn't really upset. Well. He might have been. But he hoped he didn't sound like he was. But, honestly. His friend hadn't told her fiance that her friend was also getting married?

Oh. He looked calm and collected? Good. Bones sure didn't. But Kade didn't say so. "Thanks. It's going to be a small ceremony. Just close family and stuff." Yeah, he'd invited January... but he might have been reconsidering. Whoops. Moving along. "I'm in charge of the whole thing, actually, so it's been interesting." He smiled. Interesting in a good way. Meaning, he enjoyed every second of planning.
Wait, what, really? The groom only had to say 'I do'? Vic was looking at Kade like he was the master of all weddings. He would take anything the man said to the letter. "Not sure I can just do that." Show up at his own wedding without knowing every little detail that led up to this grand day. "Well... Lucie is an excellent helper when it comes to this, but it's a bit complicated with her. Her and Jan aren't quite... best friends." To say the least. Did Jan rant talk about Lucie to him? Hmm? Vic was anticipating Kade's response to find out.

... uhm... was Vic supposed to know? Should he cover for his fiance? Was it too late to pretend that he knew and just forgot? How long was it appropriate to just stare at Kade like this? "No." He decided to go with the truth and nothing but the truth. "We haven't met up for leisure time lately, between her work and mine... things were busy." That was a lame excuse, but he offered it like the nice fiance he was.

Small ceremony meant January wasn't invited? Vic honeslt had no idea how this worked, and he was surprised to hear that Kade was in charge of the whole thing when he said the groom had to just show up and say 'I do'! "You hired a planner?"

Kade almost laughed at the look on Vic's face. Almost. The guy looked like he thought Kade was serious. He just shrugged, though, because he honestly didn't know what else to say on the matter. Vic's sister, though, was another matter entirely. "Ah. Her. Yeah." He nodded. January had told him about her future sister-in-law. "Good for you though, for not caring and proposing anyway." There was a genuine smile on his lips at this point.

We haven't met up for leisure time lately. Things were busy. Once again, Kaden almost laughed. "Oh. Well. Okay. That's fine," he said before finishing off the rest of his croissant. Seriously, though. Would it have been that hard to casually mention?

"A planner?" He repeated, eyes wide. "Oh, no. Definitely not. I'd never want to let someone else plan out that day for me." He was going to leave the explanation at that, too, before he realized that it was totally contradictory to what he'd just said about showing up and saying 'I do.' He leaned back in his seat and folded his arms. "I'm not traditional, and neither is Monique, so we're doing things a bit differently than normal. Or, at least, what I assume is normal." He shrugged a shoulder. Weddings weren't in his skill set. He'd never even had that many friends, so he couldn't use other weddings for inspiration or anything like that. "Monique wants me to plan it all, which I'm happy to do. But still. On the day, I don't have to worry about anything except for marrying her. So it's fine."

The Emily he remembered was a bit more of a cold shoulder, but there had always been warmth in her. It was nice to see it finally coming to blossom, even if that meant he would be the receiver of her smiles and long stares. He really didn't mind, it was simply nice to see her smile.

He reddened a little at the compliment, nodding his head at the same time. It might be boasting, but he would be the first to say that his children, his family, was gorgeous. It was merely strange getting used to talking about his own children with people he had not so long ago been a child with himself. "Maybe I'll bring her around the office." A bring-your-child-to-work day type of deal. Did the wizarding world have that, or was that a fluke of his muggle past?

The curiosity was quickly discarded for another as his ears and his eyebrows picked at up the mention of her holding soft relationships. At first, he thought she might be pulling his leg and leading him down some unexpected pathway. The real truth, while carefully veiled, was heartwarming. "That's wonderful, Emily. I'm so happy for you. Though, I want to meet this bloke, you hear?"

Make sure he wasn't some shifty-eyed bat. Emily had a good sense about people, but it went without saying that she was almost like a sister to him, and he felt responsible for looking out for her.

The second point of her softer heart, he didn't touch right away. Instead, he tried to puzzle it out, rubbing a finger along the side of his jaw as he thought. Extended her family? Did that mean she was engaged too? No, he didn't see a ring anywhere and she would have said fiance, not boyfriend. Emily was secretive, but she was also very correct when she spoke. Maybe a dog or a cat or a pet addition? Some people referred to pets as family, and he wouldn't judge. His dogs were very much a living and breathing part of his.

His finger stopped on mid-rub, and he eyed the woman across from him. Surely she didn't mean she had a kid. As wonderful as the idea was, and as good of a mother as he knew she would make, he just couldn't see Emily Browne with a baby, balancing her work with changing diapers.

He dropped his hand and leaned forward slightly. "Emily, you can't just leave it hanging at that." She could see, couldn't she, all the questions knocking about in his head? All the ones he was refraining from bursting out?

Even seeing him blush the way he did, reminded her of how grounded and even sensitive Sabel could be. Those were characteristics she hadn't cared for too much in others, but he wore it well. Of course, she generally didn't condone the whole bring your child to work thing, especially in the MLE, but exceptions were made... and he wouldn't be the first. "You know you're always welcome, and that includes Emma." If she was anything like Zeke then she'd make for an excellent coffee runner, or human paperweight, or something of use.

But as conversation shifted from him to her again, she found herself drawing in a deep breath. Happy was one of those words she'd never bothered to associate with anything but work. She was happy with the MLE, always had been... but now she had other things in her life she was happy about, and Gavin was one of those things. "Mmm you say that now," she mused at the whole 'wanting to meet him' thing. "He's easy enough to find if you know your way to the Senior Undersecretary's office, though he's usually sighted on level two as well." Such as when he was prying her from her desk work for lunch breaks where she would be deprived of sugary snacks unless she was lucky - or defiant. "Gavin's a good guy," she concluded, "I ran all the checks on him."

He was of course only one part of her family puzzle, Zeke made up a very important part of that. Despite the trouble he'd caused.

Emily was content with the silence that had fallen between them, because as easily as conversation flowed between them (by her standards at least), it was just as easy to sit and enjoy his presence. Only, it seemed to be too much to ask that he do the same. Emily exhaled, smirking slightly. "A couple of years ago I adopted a boy." That was the crux of it all, but still, she leant forward in her seat and rest her elbows on the table before continuing. "He's twelve and at Hogwarts now, a Gryffindor too," something Sabel could appreciate. "His name's Zeke."

There, she'd made her confession. Would she be admitted into heaven now?

Well, at least she was giving him some answers and not leaving him completely to figuring things out detective style. Senior Undersecretary. Level Two. Gavin. Child.

CHILD?!

Sabel was sure that his jaw hit the table with the force it dropped open with. As much as he knew it was rude, he couldn't bring it closed. He sat, stunned at the news, starting at Emily. A part of him was trying to discern if this was indeed the same woman he was supposed to meet. Perhaps she was an Emily, but not thee Emily, and was finding great amusement in stringing him along.

It was a foolish explanation, but with the news it almost made the most sense.

Of course, it was wonderful news. But it was just about the last thing he had actually expected. An adopted child nonetheless. Not her own flesh and blood. He had no issue with that, and found it almost more endearing in its strangeness. So, she was a mother now.

That single thought brought his jaw back up as a wide, child-like grin took the place of his shock. "Several years ago? Why didn't you say so in your letters?"

There weren't many between them, for reasons of discretion and because there simply had been no time. But there had been a few.

And he was a Gryffindor. Darn straight that made Sabel beam. Best house to get sorted into. Also one that seemed to have students constantly vying for trouble. A faint frown tickled on his brow. Kid would probably end up like a lot of the other Gryffindor's he knew, pursuing the steps of his mother.

His mother. Sabel shook his head and chuckled. "Now I've really got to meet your bloke." And by bloke, he meant boyfriend of course. But the kid too. He wanted to see what personality had managed to tangle itself in the complicated strings that made up Emily's heart. "Do you have a picture of him? Of your son?"

Yup, he wasn't going to let it go.

Yup, he wasn't going to let it go.

It wasn't the first time she'd had to break the news, or explain her relationship with the boy, but seeing the reactions never did get old. Emily remained composed, even as Sabel sat there clearly dumbfounded, it was a good thing London didn't see too many flies, or they'd have found a new home by now.

As for why she didn't say, wasn't that much obvious? "It's news I'd prefer to share in person, owls can be unreliable, and information can be dangerous." Especially when said boy had a tendency to go exploring Knockturn Alley without supervision. So no, she remained as paranoid as ever and kept that detail - and the boy - close to her chest.

Nevertheless, Emily let the silence fall between them once more as the news sunk in. The small change of Sabel's features didn't go unnoticed. The frown, she could hazard a guess as to what that was for, considering she found herself frowning enough regarding the boys actions. Of course, she didn't bother asking about it, and she found it interesting that the news made him want to meet Gavin even more. Really? "I suppose we could do dinner sometime, if you intend on sticking around long enough this time." It was always a possibility, and as long as there was food... things couldn't go too horribly wrong.

Emily shook her head, no. "I try not to keep such things on my person," she replied, "but I have one back at the office," if that was a convenient enough stop for him.

Sabel's wide grin fell to a pleasant smile, which had trouble enough sticking to his lips. He watched Emily for a long moment before the whisperings of his thoughts brought his eyes away to absently watch those at the cafe and passing by on the sidewalk or other side of the street.

"That would be nice." He only half heard himself agree to the dinner, or was it to sticking around? He couldn't be sure which the answer was intended for, his smile slipping away almost completely.

How was it that he heard so much of Damien, and even Tate, in her words? How was it, that this young woman had so much wisdom in her to make him feel like a giddy child? Guilt stabbed at him. Of course she shouldn't say such things in her owls. It made perfect sense, given their line of work. But then why had he never thought of it before?

Absently, he patted his pocket where his wallet was. It felt suddenly heavy, like a hot coal digging into him. Of course he took out the things that identified him when he was on mission, including the pictures of his family. But they were in there now. And how was that any different? There was never any telling as to who was watching them from the shadows, who wanted to bring them harm.

Anger spiked briefly at himself for being so foolish, but he did his best to mask, bringing back the small smile as he forced his attention to return to Emily. "You're a smart woman, Miss Browne."

A very smart woman.

"Perhaps I'll see it then." Perhaps, as long as...

His eyes shifted back to the package between them, his hand coming to rest slowly on top of it. For a brief moment he considered it and the conversation that waited behind it, before sliding out the thinner envelope beneath it. He held it before him, considering his options and his moves, weighting his action before finally offering it to the other woman.

"I was wondering if you wouldn't mind doing me a favor."

May as well get it over with, while they were on the unspoken topic. Regardless of the direction the conversation would go as to his placement, he had already decided that the MLE was the best, and safest place to leave his will. And Emily had just confirmed that decision.

"Given our department is in charge of law and the legalities therein, I was hoping this is something I could leave in your care."

You know, just in case...

There was no denying that their fairly cheery reunion had transpired into one of tension and ... misery? distaste? It was hard to tell, but whatever it was, there was something negative in the air between them now. It wasn't hostile, and she didn't feel as if any of the energy was directed at her, but the ease with which that smile left Sabel's face was telling enough.

"Are you okay?" she asked, staring past him at the brick wall of the cafe, before focusing her gaze on him once more. Was it something she said?

...

Of course, it wouldn't be the first nor the last time that her words put somebody at unease, but there was little she could do about that.

As for being a smart woman, "Tell me something I don't know," she teased, because she knew she was a smart woman. She didn't get to where she was by happening on information and stumbling through her actions. It was calculated. "Although I feel I need to inform you... it's Ms now, i fear I've outgrown Miss." That aside, few people took you seriously as a Miss in recent times, all that age equals experience equals competency hogwash. "And you should, he's a charming boy... or else I wouldn't keep him around." That much was certain. The boy had nine lives with her, and he'd only managed to burn through one so far. With any luck he would make the others last until becoming of age.

As much as she had attempted - and poorly so, to lighten the mood, a seriousness fell over them once more. Serious was fine, she was actually rather apt with it. Listening carefully and taking not of Sabel's features and posture - the little tell tale signs of his stress - she nodded a yes to his plea for a favour as she accepted the envelope he offered her. For him, anything.

Despite the diminutive size of the object placed in her hands, it felt greatly personal and so she didn't move to open it. She simply held it between her fingers, hearing out his elaboration. She could hazard a guess as to what it contained, and she understood the weight of it too. Not just for herself as the guardian of the document, but for him, in releasing it from his own care should anything happen to him. "It's safe with me. I promise."

The amount of ups-and-downs that his lips did, into smiles and frowns and back again, made Sabel feel like his face was a broken light, flickering on and off. How was it he couldn't just keep one on and the other hidden? Something he had to work on, that.

"I'm fine. Really." Except for that envelope and the package in front of him, and the unaddressed hippogriff in the room. "You just gave me some things to think on."

But those things were things he could think on later, that didn't have a place for discussion here. And the package, the one that felt the heaviest despite being the smallest, was out of his hands. He felt as if he could breathe a bit easier, knowing it would be safe with her. Knowing she would keep it safe and, Merlin forbid, see to its contents if the need ever rose.

"Thank you." All his relief and gratitude was conveyed in those two, simple words. Nothing more needed to be said.

Resting back in his chair, he took a brief moment to let go of some of the tension that had built up. Hardest part was over, he surmised. The rest would be what it would be, for better or worse.

"How about, you tell me something I don't know, Ms Browne." His lopsided smile indicated he really wasn't fused whether it was Miss, Ms. Mrs. or Misset. It wasn't going to be a habit of him attaching said title to her name. "Who has managed to be charming enough around the office, for you to keep them around?"

Fine. He said he was fine. Emily knew better than to pry into these things, after all, she of all people could appreciate privacy and personal space. If he wanted to tell her about it, he would have. At any rate, she was a listening ear, if it came to that.

"Okay, okay," she replied, as if he were getting his knickers in a know - which of course he wasn't. Still. It was when he said she'd given him things to think about that she knew it was something she'd said. "Well don't think too hard on them." There was nothing wrong with meaningful considerations, but she knew the impact that overthinking something could have on ones psych, and it was seldom a good thing.

Sabel's words of thanks were met with a reserved smile, one of support but not of joy. And without so much as another word on that matter, she slipped the envelope securely into the breast pocket of her coat, close to her chest. Following Sabel's lead, she too rest back in her seat, no longer leaning forward to the table.

She could hear the conversation taking place at the table set behind her, something about financial woes and concert tickets... how odious. Returning back to her own conversation - or lack thereof - Emily amused herself with potential responses to Sabel's perhaps rhetorical question... though it seemed he had other thoughts on his mind. "You always ask the tough questions," she smirked. "Most have stuck around, I've promotes some key players, though I suppose you haven't met Bones have you?" he was one of her favourites for sure, "Chosen too, he's a good egg even if he can be a pest at the best of times."

What both amused her and disappointed her most though, were the YATI, they somehow seemed to be... too green. "Do you remember when we were YATI's?" she asked, reminiscing on those years past. "Because you need to see the recruits we've been given, I don't doubt they scored well in their N.E.W.T's but they just don't seem to get it, not to mention the attitude to boot." Admittedly, Greenwell wasn't a bad recruit, she showed promise, but Bellaire, she didn't quite know what to make of him yet. "I had one recruit turn up at my office and alluded to myself being the Dragon Lady." Not to say she wasn't proud of that title, but she didn't much care for the boys brashness. Dragon Ladies appreciated respect.

Sabel returned Emily's smirk in kind. "It's what I was known for back in Hogwarts, remember?"

Always asking questions. It didn't always pan out great either, but that was probably because as often as he asked he tended to demand answers. Oh the good old days of youth. Something like that.

It was good to know some of the old team was kicking around. This Bones person though he couldn't recall ever meeting. "Can't say that I have. Not a Hogwarts graduate, are they?" They because, well, was Bones a male or a female name?

At the mention of Chosen's name an eyebrow arched and a smile played on the corners of his lips. He hadn't been sure how the Legend would fit into the Auror business, and he couldn't say he was disappointed that he had made Emily's marking ranks. He nodded his approval, not that Emily needed it from him. "Chosen always was a good guy." Always interesting, that was for darn sure. "What about Simon? Is he still kicking around?"

He hadn't spoken to his classmate in years. That, was going to have to change soon.

The smile that settled onto Sabel's lips at the turn to reminiscing about the old days was devious. His eyes glinted with amusement, even though some part of him sympathized with the difficulties of being a Senior, let alone a Department Head. "Yes, but do you remember who we had to train us? We were full of lip too, but it's a little different putting it to words when your standing in front of veterans." No offense of course.
"Damien had me scrub out the washroom with a toothbrush once."

Yup. The good old days. He eyed Emily as if to ask her if she had yet employed such a method. "But lets be honest here, you kind of are the Dragon Lady." His grin was full. The YATI may not have been able to get away with it, but he knew full well what slack she would give him. "It's rather a complement. Means your marking your mark on the Department Head history."

Still, all jesting aside, there was concern for the news. Now he understood, if only to a small degree, why the Aurors had been so harsh on their rashness when they were YATI's. He tipped his head, smile still in place. "Sounds though, like maybe an extra hand wouldn't go amiss."

Yeah he was. "How could I forget? You were so annoying," she teased. Though really, she wasn't much better. And actually, in that sense, Zeke reminded her of Sabel. Always with the questions, albeit, a lot of his questions were straight forward but he always did manage to pull something out of left field.

She didn't he's met Bones, Vic, Vic Bones... but alas, he was a graduate. "A Ravenclaw, before our time though," she conceded. "He's perhaps one of my favourites, I think you'd like him." Neither of them were the type to get wound up, they were... chilled, conversational and just plain nice.

Interesting, that most certainly was true. Both Chosen and Carter were interesting, but she wouldn't have them any other way. Character was important where leadership was concerned, she needed to know she could trust people in her circle, and they didn't pretend to be something they weren't. But yes! Of course, Simon. "Bennett's been well... he's a good asset, helped me out a few times in security too, patrols and internal investigations," he was a good egg.

Emily's lips turned up to form a smirk, her hazel eyes glinting at the memories she recalled - the same memories she was sure Sabel was thinking of. Of course, he had a point, Veterans... one particularly grumpy one she wouldn't soon forget. "That doesn't surprise me, though he did favour you." There was no doubt that she'd learnt a great deal from the man, and for that she was appreciative, but she didn't for a second miss him. Van though, Van she did miss.
That look she received though, made her laugh lightly as she nod. "When we were locked out of the Ministry after the whole chizpurfle debacle, I stationed MLE in an abandoned section of the underground, perfectly secured but you know, not exactly pristine working conditions. Nevertheless, Josh Carter comes into work one morning, and pees on the floor... so I had him scrub the whole thing and my office with a toothbrush." It had amused her to no end, though she hadn't expected the hug he gave her afterward, and she wasn't about to forget that anytime either. People needed to learn she didn't just do hugs, she was incredibly selective.

Dragon Lady Browne... it had a nice ring to it. "Oh I know, but to say it to my face took nerves." Which she admired and loathed at the same time.

Emily sat, stewing in her memories, focusing mostly on her find ones than the others. The smile Sabel wore so well though, piqued her curiosity, and his next remark only fuelled it. "I wouldn't object to extra hands," she noted, eyebrows arched curiously. Was he ready to return now?

Sabel laughed. "Annoying. That's a kind way to put it." A terror and a handful was more like it. He shook his head. "And I'll take your word for it: if favoritism is scrubbing mooncalf dung off a floor with a toothbrush."

It was a day he was sure he wouldn't ever forget, and a lesson that had served him well even if, at the time, he had hated the man for it.

But it seemed Emily had learned a thing from the ex-Head, and it had Sabel grinning. "Good grief, you sound like a spawn of his. Dragon-Lady indeed. Took notes did you?" Seriously though? Peeing on the floor? It sounded like something only Carter would do. "Good. Damien would be proud. He really liked you, you know?"

Just in case, she felt that the man had been indifferent. Damien was strict and his methods were sometimes questionable, but it was never without purpose. He cared for his staff a great deal, Emily included.

And it seemed that Emily had inherited that care, despite her preference for keeping others at an arms-reach distance, both relationship wise and physically. Nostalgia welled up within him, at the indication that the team was still very much whole. It was a relief to hear that all the YATIs he had trained with had stuck around, had made it so far. He hoped it wouldn't be long before he could catch up with them. And it sounded like Emily had been adding to the crew: good people, good picks. A good team.

"It sounds like you've got it well under control. I'm proud of you." Emily had come a long way from the YATI he remembered. While they both had a great deal to learn, that was the point. No one chose the career of an Auror to stay stagnant and locked in their ways. "I hope I get to meet this rag-tag rabble family you've collected." Soon.

Which led him to the crux of their meeting. His eyes drifted back down to the paper-covered package on the table, and at long last he pushed it over to her. "All the reports of my remaining assignments."

He had discovered that he wasn't the greatest at paperwork, and so the past few nights had been spent piecing each and every one of his long-term investigations together, closing them for good. Closing the door on that part of his life. This time, unlike before, he wouldn't be asking for a new one.

The nice way of putting it, "I can be nice, when I want to be," she affirmed, see, this was proof. And yes, he should take her word for it, "He was hard on me, but he was harder on you... you got more attention than I ever did, that in itself is favouritism." That kind of attention that pushed you to be better than what you were. He got it. She didn't. And there he was galavanting around the country on the undercover tasks she always imagined undertaking.

He was perfectly right though, she did take notes - the Ravenclaw that she was, of course she did. "I don't know why this surprises you, but spawn I am not." The similarities didn't cut that deep, did they? And as for him liking her, well now there was something. "I never set out to be liked, respected... well that's another matter." She'd take respect over a personal preference of character anyway. Why would she care if Damien had liked her? No, she only cared whether he respected her. Had it been mutual, or one sided? One was earned, the other, mostly luck... and she didn't believe in luck. "Thanks for the sentiment though, I know you mean well." Emily cocked her head to the side, trying on a sweet smile for show.

If she didn't know better, she'd have thought Sabel was buttering her up for something, but she did know better, so compliments she would have to accept. She did have things under control though, never mind what the candidates have been babbling about in their campaigning for Minister of Magic. Laughable. They had no idea. "Thanks, but we both know I was born for it," leadership, MLE, it was in her blood if nothing else. But ill-fitting jokes aside, she couldn't help but genuinely smile. "Our door is always open, you are still employed, Sabel." Ergo, he need not ask to pop into the office, despite his lengthy time away. "Please, stop by soon, we've even managed to keep the rabid desk-hungry YATI away from yours, so it's untouched if you still want it."

The item she had done so well ignoring existed, was slid over to her end of the table, and she let her gaze trail over it, a smirk lifting the corners of her lips. "I was beginning to think I wasn't going to see these for some time yet," she mused, considering paper work wasn't to Sabel's taste. Something she didn't have the luxury of postponing anymore.

"I was beginning to think I wasn't going to see these for some time yet," she mused, considering paper work wasn't to Sabel's taste. Something she didn't have the luxury of postponing anymore.
Taking his hand back, Sabel scrubbed the back of his neck, eyeing Emily as he fought back his embarrassment for lateness of his delivery.

He didn't like having been the favorite. Sure, the relationship that had extended between him and Damien had been different than for everyone else, but there were reasons behind that. Reasons he wondered if Emily had forgotten, or ever knew. Damien had kept him from spiraling down and away after Hogwarts. He wasn't sure what he would have done if the man hadn't favored him. Damien wasn't the type to extend help to just anyone.

Still, favoritism was favoritism and there was a prick of guilt for being on the receiving end of it. For the slight bit of....whatever it was he detected in Emily's voice. He didn't want to weigh on it. It was in the past, and they were here now.

Tilting his head he arched an eyebrow at her. "Is it this hard for your boyfriend to give you compliments?"

Because really, that's what he was trying to do. The truth, but a complimentary truth. He left his smile in place though, knowing that Emily was above and beyond anything else, practical and realistic. Along with her skills, they were two of the reasons she made Head of the Department.

That and her award winning personality. He chuckled, shaking his head. "You were indeed born for it." His eyes drifted back down to the paperwork, cringing again. "But I apparently, was not born for pen and paper."

He hesitated. Still employed. His desk was still available. That was sweet. Really sweet. "Sorry about the delay in the work." He nodded towards the package before letting his eyes drift up to Emily, the smile fading. Would he still have a job after this?

"Emily, I really appreciate the assignments, the experience. But...I can't do it anymore." She would understand, right? Having a kid herself. She wouldn't tell him it was the job, and it was this or nothing. Would she?

He took a breath, meeting her gaze.

"I can't afford to do long-term assignments anymore. Not unless it's completely necessary." As in people's lives were at stake. He drew his finger along the edge his coat sleeve, where his second wand was holstered, checking to make sure it was still there. "I'd like to return to London, permanently."

Was that an option? What were his options?

Though occasions such as these have been too few and far between for so long now... she couldn't deny it's splendour, particularly on a mild day such as today. Her mood was only improved still, by her company. Smirking Emily nodded. It was true, it was as difficult for Gavin to give her compliments as it was for anyone else, she showed no bias where that was concerned. "He's not the type to bother with compliments, but I daresay I've put him off of making an effort." It suited them both fine though. Less effort for him, less awkwardness for her.

Nevertheless, she shrugged and was content with a change of topic a small smile still present as they continued their meeting.

He was certainly right about a couple of things there, but she waved him off. "It's fine, the system needs reviewing anyway, so if you have any feedback on where to make cuts to these arduous documents don't hesitate to send me a memo." She was all for improving efficiency where all this was concerned. The less time her people spent putting ink to paper, the more time they could invest in the field, the courts, or the community. And maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't have as much paper pushing to do either. Paper pushing, how'd she get to this stage so fast? It was almost as if she was missing out on a significant portion of active service... as in, actively in the field. Of course, that was something she would have had to re-evaluate at some point regardless, especially with Zeke and Gavin in the picture.

But on the topic of assignments and active duties, why did it sound as if Sabel was... retiring? leaving? giving up? ... Eyebrows raised, she listened, hazel eyes locked on Sabel's face waiting for him to elaborate. He was going to elaborate, was he not?

Even as he was saying he could no longer afford the long-term assignments, she waited. The point was?

..

And to her relief, Sabel was being reasonable. The last thing she needed was to lose a perfectly sound, well trained, and respected member of staff. Though he was more than just her employee, she still saw things from a managerial perspective as well as personal.

"Consider it done. Your original position suit you? Or are you looking for a promotion?" A legitimate question. Was he wanting to remain in the Auror Office, or explore opportunities in other divisions?

Sabel's eyebrows raised at Emily's admittance. At least she wasn't playing favorites? But still, it had to be hard for the guy, not to be able to compliment his girlfriend. He put that thought on the back-burner. Perhaps it was something he could help with, perhaps it wasn't his place. At the moment, however, it certainly wasn't the place or time to deliberate or debate such matters.

The relief that came with Emily's acceptance, wiped away all concern and inquisitiveness. He felt like he could breathe easy from the first time. Getting here, to this conversation had been stressful enough, putting undo strain on his family and himself. Having this conversation had almost been worse. While Emily had said he was welcome back at any time, that had been as a long-term assignment employee. He hadn't dared to suspect that there would necessarily be a full time position for him.

Everything seemed to click into place: his hopes where they should be and his worries gone. It felt like a great burden had been taken off his shoulders.

"Wherever you can slot me in, Boss." Heh. He could call her that now, face-to-face, couldn't he? "My old job will suit me just fine." He couldn't think of a promotion that would be available or that he would want. And it wasn't something he would ever ask for. It just wasn't him.

"Thank you, Emily. Really."

Today was the day, it was election day and Victoria was trying to just have as normal of a day as she possibly could. Work was normal and since it was November the season was starting to go into swing. Paper work for changes had slowed and now it was just time to prep for matches, fines, mascot issues, and a few events here and there.

As she made her way into the cafe for lunch, Vic ordered and then found a nice table in the corner. Sipping her tea she thought about the beach that she'd be headed to for a few days over break. It was going to be so nice to get away with her husband for their first anniversary. Everything had been so hectic for almost a year now. She still felt bad for canceling their honeymoon for the campaign, but hopefully it would all be worth it.

Lifting her bag to her lap she pulled out a few files and decided while she was sitting she'd go over the schedule and match it with officials. One less thing to do once back at her desk and it was a good distraction from her own thoughts.

Seeing as two out of three of her children would be going to other countries and for how long she didn't know but she wanted to spend time with all of them. So maybe she was being a clingy mother. She actually had time to spend with her children but she couldn't do it because they were off living their lives and she couldn't blame them for that but she still wanted to see them. Being a professor for about twenty-six years and now being retired was just so different. She hadn't even been retired for a week yet and she didn't know what to do with her time. She was worrying about them but she knew that it wouldn't be a great idea to worry.

There was no sense in worrying about them as much as she used to because all of them were adults right now and she couldn't just tell them no they couldn't to another country. Nadia sighed and looked for a table for her and Emery.

Having just voted and done his citizen duty, William decided that it was time for him to treat himself. He slipped into the Pequod Cafe on his way back to the Ministry and rubbed his hands together to warm them up. A nice coffee would do that too, but he had a bit of a line since it was lunchtime...

Once he finally got handed his drink, William took a sip and looked outside mournfully. Did he really have to go back out there so soon, now that he was just starting to feel warm? He glanced around for an open seat and spotted a familiar face in the corner.

"Victoria!" the tall man called out as he made his way toward her. "Congrats on your campaign! Can I join you?" Please? He really needed a good excuse to not go back to work yet.

She had just opened the file to look through some upcoming events she had coming up. Canons had a meet and greet she knew she had to check over that stuff, a photoshoot with the Wasps next week, and her dreaded meeting with the Catapults to sign some documents to end the trade files. Maybe she would send Benji, he could deal with her. Sipping her drink she tried to think about her trip instead of that team. It wasn't the team though, just the manager.

Her brown eyes lifted as she noticed someone coming towards her and she smiled realizing who it was. "William, long time no see." The ministry was a very big place though, so she wasn't surprised she hadn't seen him in awhile. "Why thank you, it's been a very fulfilling experience." She had enjoyed getting to know more about their community, letting people know her thoughts and ideas, and just being a part of it. Though she tried not to show her nervousness of the outcome.

"Of course you can join me. I could use the company so I don't work over lunch." She lifted her papers and then closed the file slipping it back into her bag. "So how are you?"

Ah, he could join her! Good, good. Willy sat down with a smile and a sip of his coffee. "I voted for you this morning," he leaned in to tell her in all honesty. "I thought you were the most trustworthy candidate." And the only one he personally knew at all. Plus, Victoria, as she had shown him on his small tour of their workplace, knew the Ministry inside and out. So he was hoping she'd win.

But she probably had had enough of all the campaign talk for now, he was guessing. He leaned back in his seat with a chuckle. "Funny, and I'm here because I don't want to go back to work during lunch." Hah. "I'm good. How's you and yours?" She'd recently gotten remarried, right? He still had connections at Hogwarts, so he knew who her husband was (sort of).

She well, wasn't expecting that. Not that she didn't think anyone would vote for her, but to actually hear the words from someone. I voted for you. It was the sweetest thing she had heard that day. Her smile grew with appreciation. "Well thank you for the support. It seems so surreal that it will be all over soon." She would be either leaving her comfortable manager position to start a new exciting adventure as minister or she'd just be starting to plan the Quidditch camp, dealing with matches, fines, and all the fun that came along with her comfortable stable position that she adored. "That's always nice to hear. I hope others feel the same way." She felt she was trust worthy and the best candidate, but figured all the others felt that way about themselves too.

Chuckling she nodded her head, "Yes, I still need to learn to avoid work. If you see Gavin Issacs just don't tell him I was working through lunch." Her friend had lectured her many times about doing this and how she needed to stop being such a workaholic. "We can help each other out, I'll chat with you so you have a reason not to go back and you chat with me so that I can't focus on working." It was nice to have company during lunch. "I'm doing well, just have been really busy keeping up with Quidditch things Campaign things, and kid things." She chuckled, it had been a lot of things, but she had enjoyed it all. "The kids are good. Bart's at school hopefully not causing any trouble, the girls are going to that new Primary School that their dad is the head of. Cossy is doing well also, I just always hope my son isn't causing him too much of a headache." She was glad he was there to watch over Bart though.

"You say good, but how good. What have you been up to lately? Not getting into anymore conspiracies about mysteries? She couldn't help but chuckling remembering a few years ago. "Are you dating anyone?" She couldn't remember if he was last time they chatted or not.

"You're welcome! Though I bet you're ready for a bit of a break from it, huh?" It didn't hurt to be on good terms with the possible next Minister for Magic, right? "I hope they do too. I'll be rooting for ya." From level four, he would. He quietly sipped his coffee and watched as Victoria packed up whatever she'd been working on.

William joined in her chuckle, particularly since he was one who avoided authority figures, even cool ones like Gavin. "Sounds like a win-win," he agreed. "Glad to hear everyone's on top of everything! I couldn't even imagine managing a whole family AND all that work," he complimented her with slightly-widened eyes. He could barely get himself dressed and Jack fed and exercised every day of the week. That reminded him, though: He needed to go buy groceries after work today. Boo.

How good? "I've been trying to represent my department better, so no, no more conspiracy theories." William's ears turned pink at Victoria's implication. How had she heard about that? Never mind, that was a long time ago. He hadn't even seen Joao in months. "D-d-dating?" he repeated, sputtering on a sip of coffee and deciding maybe he'd better set his cup down for now. "No. I'm very.... very lonely single." He was surprised he'd managed to admit that to her.

"No. I'm very.... very lonely single." He was surprised he'd managed to admit that to her.

She smiled, he was sweet. "I can't say that I'm not ready for a little break, but with Quidditch still going even when the ministry is closed I don't truly ever get a break." She still had a job to do whether on level seven or at home. "I am taking a small trip with my husband though, so that will be nice." She was so looking forward to a relax few days on the beach. Her smile grew as she sipped her coffee, "Are you sweet talking me?" chuckling, she knew he wasn't and was fully joking with him.

Good, she wouldn't be ratted out to her friend. "I always like win-win." Everyone was happy with win-win, she wished more of life could be that way. "It's not hard when you have supporting people. Cossy does a wonderful job with the kids even if they aren't his. Charely has always been good with our daughters and takes them many evenings, plus with him being at their school it helps." She had nothing to say about Bart's dad of course, he was just not even worth talking about. "I love my job, so it's not as much work as it is passion for me. The campaign was just an added new adventure getting to know everyone and more about our community. It was fun." She rarely had bad days unless she had to deal with her son's step mother. "You could do it if you needed to. Everyone can, it's not something you figure out it's just something you do." She was sure William could do a family and work and do it well. He was nice and out going. He had all the potential.

She couldn't help but remember when he had come to her that day in the hanger about his theory and if she could help with information because she knew people in the ministry. It was all funny now that they weren't stuck in an airplane hanger. Seeing him struggle through the word dating, she raised a brow with interest. "A man like you single? How could that be?" She was very shocked to hear it, he was very nice looking, funny, friendly, she just couldn't believe it. "Well, I could try and help change that if you wanted some help." She always liked helping friends when she could. Plus she was a bit of a hopeless romantic.

"Oh. Quidditch, right." Yeah, he did not follow the sport very closely. It had just been something for him to do, back in school. Go to matches. Play in a few. He wasn't really coordinated enough to be very good at it. "A trip at this time of year sounds perfect. I hope you're going somewhere warm." He just grinned and blushed a little at her comment about sweet talking. Him? Noooooooo never. A Slytherin to the core though, WWW knew what flattery could do. ;]

Anywaaaaaaay. "Ah, so you have like a team which makes it easier. That's cool." He didn't know what having such supportive people would be like. Yeah, he had January and Oliver and Waylon, but two-thirds of his closest friends were married now! They had other people to support than him and his animal obsession. Sigh. "That sounds good," he brought himself back to the conversation. "Politics is just like a big Quidditch match, right? It's not whether you win or lose, it's all in how you play the game." And she'd definitely played a cleaner campaign than some people coughRoxanne.

Crap, she really liked the topic of his single life. William's ears and cheeks were on FIRE now, and he hastily hid his mouth behind his coffee cup to see if that would give him a chance to hide his blush. "I...I... I dunno. I ended my last relationship and it's... hard finding someone new?" With similar interests and a prettier face than Alysson's? He didn't know what to say, except, "yes," he found himself muttering and looking at the table. "I mean, I didn't mean that I needed help." Except he TOTALLY did. "I just mean... like......." He was sounding like a teenaged girl.

"How do people even meet anymore? Coffee shops? Cafes? Work?" He snorted. "I think everyone my age is just married or not interested." So sorry Victoria, you had a pretty hopeless case in front of you here.
