As you walk into the daycare itself, you'll notice it's not as it was before. Tasteful stripes and colors adorn the entire room. Everything is now vibrant and chic looking. There are curved shelves with brightly colored toys stacked neatly in place. Little tables and chairs are set in a cluster for the kids that are old enough to color and handle crayons (without trying to eat them!). For the older kids, a separate area has been set to the side so that they can play muggle board games, chess, or cards magical games like exploding snap and wizard's chess, wizard's checkers, Snitch Snatcher!, Wizard Skittles, and so on. For their reading pleasure, they also have a separate bookshelf that houses literature more suited for growing minds. Everything...in some way...is considered educational. Down to the smaller building blocks housed in individual crates.
In another part of the room, comfy chairs and cushions are set up. Anyone up for a good story? This is where one of our wonderful ministry daycare attendants will bring the babies and toddlers to read to them...or maybe just make up a story of their own. Either way, its the picture of comfort.
Do you work for the Ministry and have children? Then bring them here! Whatever the age, we'll watch them while you work!

If there was one thing that eight years of marriage did, it was give opportunities to make up with and show how much you care for your partner. Conley liked to think that he was pretty good at showing Sachin how much he meant to him, even if he did have the occasional break down – like he had at the gala. In his defense, exactly what he had feared would happen, had indeed happened. His gratefulness that Sachin hadn’t been one of the people taken had made Conley perhaps a little clingy in the past month or two; well, when he was home. Mernapped people did pose a rather big problem for DIMC and he couldnt expect his staff to work hard and sometimes late if he wasnt willing to do it himself. Still, he’d been trying to do a better job of remember to eat and take care of himself. Thsnkfully, Sachin was still willing to reminded him to take his lunch with him on the way out the door, because despite his efforts, food never seemed to register on his mental check list.
Today he hadn’t needed the reminder about lunch (it was neatly shrunk and tucked into a pocket inside of his dress robes), but he had needed the reminder about the diaper bag which was now dangling from his shoulder. He didn’t often take Radi and Levi to the daycare at the Ministry – not since the incidents with Bane and the Neo-Alliance – but today they had no choice. All of their normal babysitters were busy. ”Radi, mon cheri, s’il te plait walk…” she was busy pulling on Sachin’s hand. She never seemed to like to hold Conley’s hand much anymore, he lamented with an internal sigh. Merlin, their daughter could be stubborn when she didn’t want to do something.
Why was she at work with Daddy and Papa? She wanted to be at home with Baba and MeMe… or Auntie Winnie… ”No!” she said stubbornly to Papa as she tugged on Daddy’s hand trying to get him to stop. She dug her little heels into the ground as she tried to get him to stop walking. ”I no want go…” She wanted to stay home with Daddy or Papa, not be this place where she didn’t know anyone but her whiney boring brother. Why did her dads always have to work? Why couldn’t they just stay home and play games and eat cheese sandwiches with apple slices?

Sachin loved Conley more than ever. He loved their little family of tiny humans and animals. He loved the life he and Conley had made together. Though he got annoyed with his husband many times, it was only out of concern and worry. He often felt that Conley was neglecting his health. A fine example would be the DIMC’s actions at the gala earlier that year. Sachin was grateful that Conley hadn’t been one of the twelve who were taken by the Merpeople. Merlin knew how Sachin would have processed that or explained to their children where their papa was. Then again, he would like to think the older man would have gotten some much needed rest had he indeed been mernapped. It was quite obvious his husband was stressed now more than ever. But there had been improvements, for which Sachin was grateful. It was nice to see Con eating often and whatnot.
At present? The Indian Ambassador was laughing at Radhi’s antics. In one hand, he was balancing two year old Levi who was watching his older sister with interest and wide eyes while the other was trapped in Radhi’s smaller one as she pulled on it. Obviously she was getting nowhere in getting him to stop, her little tugs just didn’t carry that much strength. “She’s as stubborn as you are, Con.” Sachin laughed again. He had gotten enough practice with stubbornness thanks to the other man. But he couldn’t indulge her any longer.
“Radhika Singh-Phora,’’ he began gently. Sachin gave their daughter’s hand a little squeeze. “Will you please listen to me?” he asked in Hindi. Sachin waited for her to stop throwing her tantrum and in the meanwhile he glanced at Conley. “Will you hold Levi for me, Con?”

”Moreso,” he said in response to Sachin’s comparison. He reached for and took Levi with a smile. ”Come here Mon Chou.” He shifted him around to his other side and gave him a small happy squeeze. ”Your big sister is the most stubborn person I know, Levi. And I know Auntie Winnie…” He was only joking a little. Stubbornness was a Phora family trait. It was a wonder sometimes how any of his family was married, let alone had kids. He turned to show Levi the fountains while Sachin and Radhika had a private moment. He’d learned the hard way that it often was better if he let Sachin talk to her when she was like this. His energy just seemed to feed her stubbornness, whereas Sachin’s seemed to settle her.
Maybe that was why she seemed to like Sachin better.
She froze. Daddy was using her in trouble name and even if he didn’t sound mad, he clearly wasn’t happy about something she did. She was so used to hearing her fathers speak in different languages it was like second nature to her although she often responded in English. She gave his hand another tug and then pouted. She didn’t want to talk or listen right now, even if she knew that might make her fathers more upset. ”I wanna go home.” and then she sniffed, feeling suddenly overwhelmed by emotions.

That comment certainly got a hearty chuckle from Sachin. Yes, just maybe that was true: Radhika might be more stubborn than his husband. Thank goodness Sachin had had enough practice to handle such a situation like the one he currently found himself in. He would also tell Conley that he was certain their daughter did not like him more; it was just that she responded better to him. Sachin was sure Radhi loved them both equally and their main competition might be Duke.
Radhika would be right: Sachin wasn’t angry. He had long learnt that patience was the way to deal with stubbornness. Patience and firmness. He knelt so that he was at eye level with the little girl. “I know you do.” Sachin fished into his pocket and offered her her pink little handkerchief which he kept for this exact reason. His words flowed in Hindi because he knew despite her not being fully able to respond in the language, she understood the foreign words. Sachin was very proud of Radhi for picking up on the language, along with French, so quickly. “Aunty Winnie and everyone else are busy today. They would have happily let you stay with them if they could. You know that, don’t you?”
Little Levi might only be two years old but he was used to his Didi {‘older sister’ in Hindi} throwing tantrums. He often watched her in fascination when she did that; he watched her in fascination with anything that she did. Levi stretched out his small arms to his papa, making soft toddler noises in the process and as he settled into the man’s side. Seeing the water at the fountains, he clapped his hands in delight.
tying us into the fountain stuff- so I can send Conley over there.

”No…” She sniffed refusing to back down for a moment, but then Daddy handed her a nose wipe and she sniffed again. She grabbed his hand and wiped her nose back and forth on the hanky (which Sachin was still holding onto). There was a snort and a snuffle and snot or tears might have gotten onto her daddy’s hand. ”You take me home,” she insisted, not willing to resign herself to going to the daycare yet.
Conley continued to murmur softly to Levi, nothing particular - just an old French nursery rhyme. He’d used the same one to calm Radhika when she was his age, but it didn’t seem to work too much anymore. Not that Levi needed to be soothed, it was more just something to keep him busy while Sachin spoke to their first born. But then Levi started clapping his hands and pointing. {“Yes, water,”} he said in French with a smile as he watched the little boy’s eyes twinkle with delight. ”But not the kind we can swim in. It’s just for looking pretty.”
Which was a funny way to put things because Conley watched as someone climbed into the fountain. Dear Merlin, was that Airey? What was he doing? Worse - someone seemed to be joining him. ”Sach,” he said, interrupting his husband and his daughter. ”Is that Ambassador Connelly?” Bloody hell… as if things at the underwater gala hadn’t been bad enough. He didn’t need to spend the afternoon telling the Netherlands that their diplomat had gone cuckoo.
Maybe he could just ignore it… he needed to make sure his children were safely in daycare before he responded to any problem. His children came first. It was a decision he’d made when they brought Radhika home and one that had been solidified after the problems with the Neo-Alliance and their anti-muggle rhetoric.
It was quite obvious that everything had its own place in the daycare and nursery. Even with children making messes here and there, most things did wind up on their proper shelves and in trunks by the end of the day. So the current state of the room this morning would be a rather surprising sight for employees and parents who frequent here.
Toys were scattered about, several books rested on the floor in a manner that would break any bookworm's heart, game boxes had been opened, and there were even some crayon scribbles on the wall. Those who are familiar with everything in the room will notice some of the items and game pieces have gone missing.
Did someone not clean up after the youth before clocking out yesterday? Hmm.
It only had been since September that Sookie had had reason to frequent the Daycare daily, but that was long enough to have noticed the pattern of cleanliness and care that staff put into the overall appearance of the room. So as she made her way into the room with her adopted son, she was taken aback by the overall state. "What in merlin's beard?" Had someone intentionally ransacked the room?
She couldn't see anyone being that foolish considering this was the Ministry of Magic and the parents of the children in this room would certainly not rest if their children were being targeted. Herself now included in that as well.
Stepping into the room, she picked up a couple of books and began to carefully place them back on the shelves - looking for any clues as she did so, her attention also turning to the little boy with her. "Do you like these books?" She still hadn't quite figured out exactly what toys and the like she should have in his room for him to play with at home.

Ji-Ho had only recently discovered that he loved puzzles. He loved examining the pieces and trying to figure out where each belonged. It never bothered him that he sometimes took very, very long to finish one. No, this three year old was quite patient so if it was going to take him a day or two to finish one puzzle, so be it. And so, it was a puzzle he wanted to do this early morning.
But the sight of the familiar room left him feeling somewhat anxious. Ji-Ho liked things to be neat and organised. He didn’t like the room in its current state. The little boy peered up at his eomeoni, a worried expression plastered on his face but she was already working on cleaning up. Seeing her do this inspired him in turn and he began helping by organising the board games neatly back to their places.
Ji-Ho gravitated back to his eomeoni when she asked about the books. He nodded before adding, “Books with dragons.” He paused, trying to figure out what else. “Princesses. Princes.” In other words, Ji-Ho liked fairy tales for now. “Puzzles?” he asked, pointing to them. “With me?” Little Ji-Ho wanted to put together a piece with his mama.

If you couldn’t tell from this Ministry worker’s baffled face as she headed into the daycare for her shift, it wasn’t usually this messy. In fact she had been personally responsible for tidying up the book corner which she had left in perfect order as they closed up the previous night. It wasn’t exactly uncommon for there to be the odd misplaced puzzle piece and a toy strewn across the floor as naturally they were children and children (and Allie really) enjoyed the chaos that came with that territory but this was a whole new kettle of fish.
“What in the..?” the twenty-six year old’s nose scrunched up in confusion as her eyes flickered between the scribbles on the wall to the open boxes and finally to the books that she had personally slaved over organised. “Have we been invaded by Cornish Pixies?” she asked to no one in particular and more to the ether which more than likely was not going to reply but it was the magical world and stranger things had happened. “Either that or a Tasmanian Devil.” The reference was a little niche but some Muggleborns might have got it.
As she picked up each of the items from the floor, keeping a careful eye for anything out of the ordinary as she did so, Sookie listened to her son listing off the things he liked in books. Keeping a mental note of each thing the boy added, so that she could write them all down later in her office on the list she had begun some time back for keeping track of his interests so that she knew what she could add around the house to make it feel more comfortable to him - more like a home. Books with dragons and princesses and princes brought back her own memories from childhood, and she smiled as she pictured the box of books she had in her attic on just the subjects she thought he'd enjoy. Another mental note made to pull that down later.
She knew that she should quickly get things cleaned up and then head to her own office, or perhaps pop in to see Hugo to see if he felt the need for the incident to be inspected, but if Ji-Ho was asking her to sit and do a puzzle with him. How could she possibly say no? "I can make time to do one with you before I need to get down to my office. Do you want to pick the one that looks the most fine to you and we can try it together?" She asked gently, a soft smile as she placed the last books in her hand onto the shelf.
Hearing the entrance of another person, one of the daycare workers as she recognized, Sook stood for a moment - brushing off her skirt as she stepped closer to Ji-Ho. The cornish pixie remark nearly made her flinch as she realized that with the debacle of the delivery from the russian reserve... that wasn't entirely far fetched. But as far as Sookie was aware, they hadn't let any escape the holding room. "In regards to pixies, that I can certainly check for." She replied to the comment she'd said to the room, before glancing around at the mess again. "I'm sorry, we picked up the books for you but I'm realizing now it might have been better to leave them in case you wanted to conduct inventory to make sure nothing is missing." She'd perhaps been a little too quick to act knowing how anxious mess seemed to make Ji-Ho.

Childrens’ minds were like sponges and Ji-ho’s was pretty much the same. He observed how quiet his mother had gotten but rather than think that she was mad at him for talking, he thought that she was listening to his jabber. Naturally, he was correct. The little boy liked that about her; he was so comfortable around her.
Ji-ho was afraid she would have to leave him; there wasn’t any need for her to leave just yet… right? It turned out she didn’t! The little guy clapped his hands twice then ran off to grab a small kit containing the image of a Swedish Short Snout Dragon on it. The dragon was sleeping in a field of colourful flowers. “This one, eomeoni!” The puzzle was held out to her as he considered his words further. It was difficult when he sort of knew the answer but was hoping for a different response. He opened his mouth, closed it then opened it again. “Only one puzzle?”
With the room cleaner, Ji-ho was a little relaxed. The presence of another familiar face also helped. He offered her a wide smile though he most certainly was distracted by emptying the puzzle pieces on the table.
She wasn't able to find adequate words to express the joy it brought her for how quickly it seemed Ji-Ho had been able to adjust to life over the bond, and in a household with her. From the moment she'd met the little boy in the States at his foster family's home, she'd felt a bond with him, but the act of adoption and bringing him home had still been terrifying to her. Not because of the changes and adjustment period it would be for her (though there were certainly changes) but because she'd been concerned he'd be unhappy. The fact the little boy seemed content and comfortable was more than she could have asked for so soon.
She perhaps should have left immediately, but when he was asking so sweetly and there was no easily seen cause to the chaos of the daycare, she felt it more important to dawdle for a moment. One (or two) puzzles wouldn't put her behind schedule for the day. And even if she was a few moments late, she didn't have any meetings or anything on the docket for that morning so there shouldn't be a consequence. "This one it is." She replied, smiling at him before finding an open spot of floor to settle down on and open the box to pull out the contents. "Are the Swedish short snouts your favorite dragon?" She asked, beginning the work. At the follow up question, she wanted to promise as many puzzles as he wanted but she kept herself in check. "One to start. We'll see if a second one can be fit in as well." She compromised.

Children were perceptive and their brain was like a sponge; Ji-Ho was no different. He had been able to tell {and he still could tell} that Sookie had his best interests at heart. Never mind that he had been a bit shy at first when they initially met; all that shyness was gone. At least when it came to her.
Ji-Ho already understood that his eomeoni was a big deal in the Ministry. Not just that, but he was of the opinion that she was the boss. Did that not make her able to do anything? Like go to work a little late? She could use the time to help him with puzzles instead. “Yes.” Ji-Ho busied himself by getting to his knees and sitting back on his legs. “Like their skin.” It was sort of white? Silver? But there was definitely blue and he liked how they mixed together. “The colour is pretty.”
The little boy was only a little content with eomeoni’s answer. “Eomeoni is boss here. She can go to work whenever she want.” Even if Sookie was the Minister, it didn’t mean she could do as she pleased. It seemed like Ji-Ho had a bit to learn in that aspect!
In truth, it had been a lot of Ji-Ho’s shyness that had so quickly endeared the little boy to her. Sookie had always liked kids, despite the fact her nephews when they were younger had been the only children she’d really gotten to be around. But she’d loved them fiercely, had been the most devoted of aunts when they were young and she’d had all the time and means to get to see them. Yoon had always been so vibrant and full of life - and he still continued to be so in his stardom. But Kyo? He’d been quieter, shier, much like Sookie herself had always been. His loss had been devastating for all of them, and her own heart had fractured. But the minute she saw little Ji-Ho? She was reminded of her nephew - and the more she had gotten to know the little boy, the more she loved him both for his similarities and the differences that made him so distinctly the child he was. The day when she could tell how truly comfortable he had grown with her had been perhaps one of the happiest of her 40-some years.
She certainly would not go so far as to say she was ‘a big deal’. She simply was another cog in the well oiled ministry machine. And honestly, she knew she would be no where (and her department in complete disarray!) if it were not for all the dedicated individuals she had the pleasure to work alongside. Though that was a lot to explain to a 2 year old, so she’d simply let it be. Another tidbit of his preferences that she filed away for future use, a small smile gracing her face at his response. “Their skin is very pretty isn’t it? Do you like silver and white the best?”
At Ji-Ho’s words, she couldn’t help the soft startled laugh that escaped as she gave a shake of her head. “You’re right I am in a management type of position, but I can’t do whatever I want. It’s important as someone in a position of responsibility to lead by example. Which means I need to be even more so diligent about keeping normal work hours, being at my desk when I say I will be, and being thorough in my work. It would be nice if I could mess with the rules sometimes to better fit my schedule, but it just wouldn’t be fair to everyone else would it?”
