| | |  Moving Staircases
 To get to History of Magic, or Muggle Studies, one will have to make use of the first floor corridor. Getting here is usually relatively easy if you're coming from one of the lower levels of the castle as you need only deal with the moving staircases for just a few minutes. Rugs with intricate patterns have been placed on the floor to soften your footsteps so that any learning going on inside the classrooms isn't disturbed.
Make sure you are not dilly dallying on your way to or from class. This corridor in particular is often times filled with students during the school day and a few professors pointing those who have managed to get lost in the right direction. Various doors flank this corridor, so make sure to memorize which of the portraits are outside of the classrooms you should be entering. And don't freak out when the corridor comes to a sudden halt -- the door at the end of the hallway will take you outside to the stone bridge and then to the rest of the first floor over in the next tower. Just keep moving!

Today's point to be tackled on Maddox's curiosity agenda: figuring out the ins and outs of these staircases. He wanted to know where each one led to, where they moved around to, and find all the weird little nooks and crannies that people wouldn't necessarily stumble upon. This was a big castle, not all of it used for their classes, and Maddox wanted to know it like the back of his hand. And this was one of the more complex places to map out.
He had a little bit of time today and was determined to tackle this beast of a room, even if only a little bit. He started at the bottom on the first floor, taking the staircases up to places he specifically didn't know. When he encountered a moving set of stairs he would stand on it, watching where it moved to, trying to lay out all the branching paths you could take on them out in his head.
And it was starting to give him a headache. Not to mention, he was getting his exercise in at a markedly increased rate—maybe he wasn't, you know, the most athletic of kids, so spending a prolonged period of time just going up and down stairs wasn't something he was quite prepared for. As he climbed up a set of stairs from a hallway that only led to a locked door (which he would figure out what was behind it ONE DAY...not today though), his legs were feeling like jelly. When he made it to the landing he leaned against the wall, catching his breath. Maybe this was an even larger task than he originally made it out to be. |

Zephyr, too, found the moving staircases an intriguing puzzle. Ever since that one day when he'd gotten lost trying to go back to his common room, he'd thought about trying to fully map out every path from each of the staircases, even if it was only in his head and not on an actual piece of parchment. Writing it down would, probably, make it easier, but he was confident he could memorize it all.
Eventually.
Whether he should begin his trek from the top or the bottom, that was the first question to answer. He left it up to a coin flip. That coin had decided on the bottom, and so here he was, bounding up the first few staircases and considering his next move.
And that was... Hey, there was Maddox! His friend!
This would be way more fun with a friend to tag-along with, right? Aside from the fact that Maddox looked a little out of breath. Stairs would do that to anyone though, so that probably wasn't strange.
"Hey, Maddox!" The Ravenclaw joined his friend on the landing with a grin. "Whatcha up to?"

Maddox stood back up straight at the sound of his name. Didn't need someone to see him looking weak. "Oh. Zephyr," he said, trying to steady his breathing but not being able to hide the flush in his cheeks. Stupid body and its stupid signs of exertion. Zephyr somehow always seemed to find him when he was up to something.
"Mapping the stairs," he said, crossing his arms a bit. He hoped that Zephyr would just say Oh, cool and keep going to wherever he was off to. Working together did not go especially well for him last time. Or hopefully he at least wouldn't be as grating this time. | |

"Oh, cool, me too!" was Zephyr's reply, that smile still on his face. What a coincidence that they had the same idea and at the same time! Great minds and all that, right? It was like fate or destiny or a horse knew they were friends and had the same plan and made them bump into each other at the most convenient moment. What were the odds? How would someone even calculate those odds? Eh, a thought for another time probably.
"I bet we could help each other!" The Ravenclaw continued. "I haven't gotten very far yet since I've only just begun, but two heads are better than one, right?"

Yes. Very cool. Maddox set his jaw just slightly, his face being fairly unreadable otherwise. If Maddox thought this little venture was going to be more complicated he would've done a reading to see what would happen. And he would've done this tomorrow instead.
Maddox debated flat-out saying no and leaving. He already had other friends, so, you know, kicking that bad habit was done successfully already. But he also knew that turning Zephyr away now would just lead to more annoyances from him down the road. Because he thought they were friends. Which means he would get upset and follow Maddox around like a sad puppy asking him what's wrong, and that would be worse than Maddox sucking it up and dealing with it now. He gave Zephyr a once over. "Right." He turned on his heel and continued up the stairs. "I've figured out everything below here already," he tossed over his shoulder. If Zephyr was going to follow he would follow. Maddox still hadn't fully recovered yet and felt a bit laboured going up the steps. He did his best to keep his breathing quiet and even. | |

That sure sounded like a 'yes, let's team up!' to Zephyr - or at least, it didn't sound like a 'no' - so he followed after Maddox. His friend must've been at this awhile if he had already gone through all the ones Zephyr had passed. "Cool!" And he wanted to ask about what Maddox had found so far, but he also thought that would distract from their task now and maybe make it confusing trying to pay attention to different sets of stairs at the same time. So he bookmarked that in his mind for later.
"Guess we can focus on these next ones then," he said, glancing down at the one they were now on. "Wonder when this one will-"
Move? Yep, it did just that right then, so he paused. "Oh, there we go!"
Where would this one land next??
