Videos: Harry Potter cast interviews from Deathly Hallows I DVD launch
In the week leading up to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 on DVD, several cast members took part in press promotion both in London and New York. They discussed filming Deathly Hallows and the series as a whole. Below are some of their interviews.
In an interview with Sugarscape, James and Oliver Phelps talk about dealing with Fred’s death and George’s prosthetic ear during the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as well as what they wished they’d been allowed to take from the Potter set, switching places as twins to trick people and being recognized even without their signature red hair.
Quote:
Have you switched roles today?
Oliver: No, we’ve been quite good today.
Do you switch roles in real life?
James: Only in interviews, to be honest with you. If we’re doing junkets all day where you start at 8 and finish at 6, then you have to mix it around to keep yourself entertained.
Did you manage to steal anything from the set?
James: (nodding yes) No, not at all. If I were to, I’d go for the puking pastilles. Oliver: Or a bag from the joke shop.
What memorable times on set do you think you’ll take away with you?
Oliver: The Yule Ball in The Goblet of Fire always sticks in my mind because it was such a random week. It was filmed around Christmastime, which is when the ball was set. Moments like that really stick in my mind.
Do you find that you don’t get recognized as much anymore because you’re not so ginger?
James: We spent five or six weeks in California earlier in the year. [In London] it died down a bit – “Oh, they’ve got brown hair,” – they got over it. But there they recognized us quite a lot, which is quite weird.
Fred dies in the film. Was that traumatic?
James: Not for me. I slept. I actually fell asleep and woke up and the Hogwarts stage was empty because everyone had gone to lunch. They left me there. Oliver: It was weird for me to do. Obviously not just for stage, but my real brother as well, to see him all pale and copsed on the floor. It was quite weird. It was quite difficult to film to begin with.
You get to wear some pretty cool make up, like when George loses his ear.
Oliver: Yeah, that stuff was pretty cool. I actually kept the last two pieces. I kept one and gave the other to Rupert’s PA, Sarah. When we’d be in Rupert’s dressing room playing table tennis, she kept poking it. It’s like a silicon-type thing, so I just walked in the last day and just threw it at her. So she’s got that one … I’ve got [mine] with my script at home.
So what’s next for you guys?
James: We’re looking at stuff at the moment. As I said, we just came back from California and were shown a few scripts which were pretty promising.
What if you went for the same role?
Oliver: We’ve got a rule: We don’t do that. James: We talk it out, man to man and say, “Well, I think you’d be better at doing this,” or we have a game of golf.
Teen.com asked cast members Domhnall Gleason (Bill Weasley), Bonnie Wright, James and Oliver Phelps, Evanna Lynch and Warwick Davis about on set accidents, magical powers and who they’d want to turn into using Polyjuice Potion.
Quote:
If you drank the Polyjuice Potion who would you be?
Evanna Lynch: I’d want to be Britney Spears. I think she’s cool. Warwick Davis: Someone who could make a difference to the world. Evanna Lynch: That’s a far more noble answer than mine. Bonnie Wright: I’d go back in time and be F. Scott Fitzgerald. Oliver Phelps: Beckham, or someone like that for a day. That’d be quite sweet. Domhnall Gleason: I’d like to be Serge Gainsbourg for two of the good years. James Phelps: The Queen. Power over the empire. Oliver Phelps: (looks at James) An old lady?
BuzzSugar asked James and Oliver Phelps about their experiences working on the set of Harry Potter over the years.
Quote:
Did you enjoy shooting the battle scene?
Oliver: Yeah, that was really cool. Especially how you use these sets for years, in one sense or another, and then you film in them and they’re totally descimated. There’s glass and brickwork everywhere. To be able to shoot like that was really cool - especially to finish the film sequence on such a level. It’s really good that they didn’t just sort it out and discuss it amicably. It did just come to one big head.
If you could play one other character in Harry Potter, who would it be?
James: I think I’d like to play someone like Dobby or Kreacher. Just go completely the other way. Oliver: I think a bad guy, like a Voldemort. Someone really sinister.
Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore) told Home Media Magazine what it was like to work with director David Yates.
Quote:
Michael Gambon: He’s terrific. He’s got endless energy. He bangs through a scene for 25 times until he gets what he wants. He won’t let you off the hook. If you get it right the first time, then you’re okay. Robbie Coltrane: And he’s got a very quiet voice. Michael Gambon: Yes, he’s very quiet, and he dances like a little boy when he’s happy. He leaps across the floor, dancing up and down like a little boy. And he means it, doesn’t he? Robbie Coltrane: He does mean it, and he’s done four [films]. Michael Gambon: Four on the trot. Robbie Coltrane: Four on the trot. I don’t know where he gets the energy from. A lot of directors who have just done one have said, “I’m just going to bed for a year.” Such a commitment – a year of nonstop work. There’s usually at least two units running, then you’re running a special effects unit and an electronics unit ... Michael Gambon: And there’s a second unit running all the time. Robbie Coltrane: Crazy guy.
HeyUGuys discussed jokes on set with James and Oliver Phelps, plus future plans and who they’d pick for their Quidditch ‘dream team’.
Quote:
If you could choose from the cast your Quidditch dream team, who would you chose?
James: If I was going to say character, I’d say Ron, but if I’m saying Rupert then I’m not so sure. Oliver: I’d say Alfie Enoch, just because he’s the most sportiest guy going. He plays cricket just fantastic.
There are people that play Quidditch …
James and Oliver: Skydiving? James Phelps: We actually said that in an interview once. It was a long day of press and they said, “How do you do Quidditch?” and I jokingly said, “We do skydiving. It’s one take - you’ve got to get it all done.” Then we saw the press article, “EXCLUSIVE!” I don’t know where that was, but I’m sorry.
I cracked up about the cast leaving James on the set. Lol.

The twins have to be the funniest ever!!! As for Fred's scene-I cant imagine what that must have been like to film, especially for Oliver. SO sad...you can tell the Weasley brothers (James, Oliver, Rupert) are all very close. Very sweet to listen to them.
