Just like the title says, I'm treating this like a journal, not spending too much time writing down Padfoot's thoughts. And that means some posts will be very short. Of course, the credit here belongs to the incredible creator of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling. As always, thank you so much for reading!

November 4th, 1981

Never thought I would say this, but: Greetings from Azkaban! How did I end up here? I’ll just tell you my story from the beginning…

I didn’t think it could get any worse. James and Lily Potter were dead. Two of my best friends in the entire world, gone in a flash. One good thing did come out of this, though: You-Know-Who had been almost completely destroyed by their son, Harry. Just a baby boy! Nobody saw that coming (I’m already so proud of my godson and he hasn’t started talking yet. Can’t wait to thank him personally some day, if I ever get out of here). Another thing I didn’t see coming: Pettigrew. James and I never really liked him, but Remus kept insisting, “We can’t let him go on without making any real friends at Hogwarts.” Maybe if we’d included him more, James and Lily would still be alive.

After You-Know-Who’s demise, I went over to Peter’s home to see how he was handling all this. As one of the Marauders, I knew it was the right thing to do, even if I thought Peter was odd. “I suppose Harry’s going to live with me now,” I said to him. “How will he handle being an orphan?”

Peter replied, “I wouldn’t know. It’s anybody’s guess.” He was looking suspicious, avoiding my eyes. There was a long pause. “Sirius… It’s all my fault.”

I shook my head vigorously. “Peter, you couldn’t have known this was going to happen. Somebody gave away Lily and James’ hiding place. When I find out who snitched, I’ll make them wish they were dead.”

“Oh, I know who it is, all right,” he muttered. “I’m not sure how to tell you this, Padfoot, but…” Peter began fidgeting. “Merlin’s beard, I’m such a terrible friend... I sold them out. I told the Dark Lord of Godric’s Hollow.”

I gave him an incredulous smirk. “You’re joking! You? A Death Eater? That’s a good one, Wormtail.”

“Why would I joke about something this serious?” he said tensely. The guilt on his face became proof enough, and I finally saw him for the rat he always was.

I seethed with rage. “I should’ve known you would turn on us, you little guttersnipe. Have fun in Azkaban.” I Disapparated on the spot.

To clear my mind, I went to visit Godric’s Hollow. Why did I want to torture myself with memories of people who no longer existed? Good question. I honestly couldn’t give you the answer. But I can tell you that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. After walking for who knows how long, a giant explosion shook the ground, sending my feet out from under me. Smoke billowed everywhere. Through it, I could see many people lying down, dead on impact. A pudgy, short figure stood in the midst of them. Who else could it be but Peter? I stood up and stepped closer. The rat was missing a finger! Looking down, I saw it lying beside him.

“Oh, Wormtail, you’re going to get it now,” I promised with a vengeance. He just smiled cruelly and shrunk to rat form, slinking away into a nearby sewer.

“Hello, sir.” An elderly wizard Apparated next to me with his wand raised. Others followed, and soon I was surrounded. “We’re from the Ministry, and we just received an urgent owl to come.” He scanned the litter of bodies. “Blimey. Quite a mess we’ve got here. What’s your name?”

“Sirius Black.”

“Did you see the man who did this?”

Then I did something I’ll regret for the rest of my life. I laughed. Like a crazed lunatic!

“Well, that sure as anything answered my question,” the old wizard said angrily. “Stun him, boys.”

A group of voices shouted, “Stupefy!” and I was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, I found myself in this cell. I ran to the door to see who was keeping watch. “Hello? I didn’t do anything! Don’t I get a trial?” The only beings in sight weren’t human. Dementors. Far below the prison, the cold ocean waves pounded against the jagged rocks. Welcome to my new home.

Is it New Year’s already? It must be. Each day drags on so slowly that it’s hard to know for sure. I didn’t think it was possible to hate any place more than Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. How wrong I was. This journal is the only way to keep me sane around here. The Dementors probably think that all my happy memories are gone, but I’ve fought them as hard as I can. I think about my Hogwarts years all the time. Those were the best days of my life. As long as I think about those days, I’ll never go completely mental.

The first friend I made at school was Remus Lupin . After the Hat sorted me into Gryffindor (take that, Mum and Dad!), I sat down and waited for the other first years to join us. Professor Dumbledore, before he was Headmaster, was in charge of running the Sorting. After sorting through most of the students, he called up “Lupin, Remus.” The boy had light brown hair, and he looked pretty worn out by something. Of course, I didn’t find out what that was for another year. The Sorting Hat shouted, “Gryffindor!” and he walked over to our table. I had an empty seat next to me, so I offered it to him. “Thank you,” he said with a wolfish grin (ha ha, no pun intended there).

I raised my hand to shake his. “Black’s the name. Sirius Black. I’ve heard they put each year together in the dorms. It’s good to meet one of my roommates!”

He shook my hand warily. “Oh. You’re a Black? As in…”

“Yes, those Blacks,” I interrupted, “I’m nothing like the rest of my family, though. They don’t know it, but they’re going hate me for it in a few years,” I added happily. Remus laughed. “Glad you appreciate my sense of humor. Looks like we’ll be good friends, Lupin.”

“You know, you can call me Remus, since I’m sure we’ll be spending loads of time together.”

“Oops. I hadn’t meant to call you that, Remus,” I corrected myself quickly. “My family just refers to everyone by their last names. Force of habit.”

When Remus told us that he was a werewolf (Ok, James and I pressured him into telling), I could’ve cared less. I was nearly as much of an outsider as him because I went against the Black traditions, starting with when I wasn’t sorted into Slytherin.

Good old Remus. He must hate me. Someday, this disaster will be straightened out, and we can be best mates again.

Aww... Lovd it!!! I sure hope this story doesn't get too black and/or sirius. (unlike Sirius, my pun was inteded)

Can I just say how unfair all of this is? I bet I’m not the only innocent one in Azkaban, either. Stupid Ministry. If I had a trial, I would’ve ruined Pettigrew for all he’s worth. How someone could pull a betrayal like he did, I’ll never know. I’d be able to do whatever I wanted. Get married, have kids (wait, scratch that first one). But instead, I get to spend hours staring at a cement wall. I’m so bored. You’d think I’d love having so much time on my hands. But think about it: They took away my wand, I barely get any food, two of my best friends are gone, another one is a complete twit, another hates me, I’ve been imprisoned for a crime I didn’t commit, and I’m all alone with complete strangers! How do you think I’m doing?

Those Dementors just make this jail time even worse. You know what I think of when they float by me? Well, first, there was the day that I was arrested, but there’s another terrible memory that they make me relive: The day I ran away from home. I can still hear my mum’s screaming from when I told her that I was leaving.

“Blood traitor!” she called me.

My dad just said, “Good riddance. I won’t have a son who doesn’t agree with our ways.”

They should’ve seen it coming. Even before I went to Hogwarts, I knew their prejudice against Muggle-borns, Muggles, and the rest of the world, was completely senseless. I’ll admit, when I moved to the Potters, some nights I would tear up a little thinking about my family. I mean, they gave me life. It’s not so easy to forget that. But then I remembered what dunderheads they were. I’m proud that I stood up for what’s right. It’s a cause I would die for. As soon as I’m out of here, that is…

I won’t ever forget the first time I became a dog. James and I (No, I won’t ever mention that rat in the same sentence as us!) had been hoping to cheer Remus up. Yes, we shouldn’t have been attempting it at our age, but we didn’t care! Not only would it help Remus; it would give us something to set us apart from the other Gryffindors. Since we don’t get to choose our Animagus forms, I was so curious about what I would become. We had practiced the incantation for months, without wands. When we finally settled on a day to transform for the first time, I’ll admit, my nerves were creeping in slowly.

“Why don’t you go first?” I asked James.

He grinned knowingly, nudging me in the side with his elbow. “Don’t tell me Sirius Black is scared?!?! Afraid that you’ll turn into a puny rabbit?”

“No!” I wasn’t going to let my friend taunt me. “I’m sure it will be something practical. But I just want to see what you become first.”

James rolled his eyes; then he took out his wand and whispered, “Animagi.” Suddenly, he morphed into a giant stag. His size made me kind of jealous.

I took a deep breath, saying the same incantation. Black fur started to grow all over me, followed by paws and floppy ears. I shrunk as my bones shifted painfully. James could easily step on me now. It took me only a few seconds to realize what I was. I think my sharp teeth gave it away.

I couldn’t help but run off immediately, looking for something fun to do. I felt so free, chasing squirrels up trees and sniffing the grass.

Once I returned to human form, I realized with a grin, this would be really useful for sneaking out of the school!

Sure, it was dangerous; but what did I care? I wanted to be a good friend to Remus; so did James. How ironic that my name means “black dog”. What can I say? It was destiny.

I love it! It most certainly was destiny. Keep up the good work! Its nice to hear from Sirius again.

*nod nod* this is true, but maybe he kept a tally? He claws would probably come in handy for that Day 14 sort of thing. But, that is just a suggestion/observation

Ooooooooh! Awesome idea, to create a journal from Sirius's Azkaban days! I'm loving this so far, your Sirius is completely in character and I love the flashbacks to his days at Hogwarts! Hope to see more soon. :]
