Lavina Greengrass-Spinks looked up, surprised. “What kind of question is that?” Samira shrugged, a habit that Lavina detested in children. The woman sighed and put down the spoon she was using for her newest potion.
“We travel because we want to see the world, dear. We have much inherited money, so we don’t have to work as meticulously as others.”
Samira cocked her head to one side. “What does mutt-ick-u-lus mean, Mother?”
Lavina sighed and turned back to her potion. “Look it up in the dictionary, dear.”

Summer Before Seventh Year
Samira was idly folding some socks in her room when her elder cousin Elektra burst in. “We’re going partying,” she said as-a-matter-of-factly.
“What do you mean?” said Samira. “Mother said we couldn’t go. It’s unsupervised!”
Elektra was a party-girl, and she was forever pulling Samira into her messes.
“Don’t be such a prune, Sami,” snapped Elektra. After a bit of persuading, Samira agreed, and the two snuck out.
Later than night, when Samira and Elektra came home, tipsy, giggling, and with their clothes ruffled in a very suggestive way, they barely noticed their parents sitting there, waiting.

Samira gasped, taking a step back in surprise. Oh no…I’m screwed now. Castiel Spinks, Elektra’s strict father, stood up. He could barely contain his anger.
“How dare you…” he whispered. “How dare you girls disobey us!” Castiel was angered very easily.
Samira’s parents stood up as well. Samira shrunk under their disappointed gaze. Elektra was trying to straighten her clothes and messy hair. It was obvious that someone else had caused their disheveled appearance.
“I’m sorry…” whispered Samira sincerely. The punishment that followed was the worst she could remember. Samira never snuck out partying again.

“Samira! Samira!” Cyril, Samira’s little cousin, came racing over. She stuck out a hand and stopped him before he could collide with her. Cyril stumbled back. He seemed dazed at first, but then regained his cheerful attitude. “I’ve decided what I want to be for Halloween!” He grinned, showing his missing front teeth.
“Oh?” Samira pretended to be interested. “And what is that?”
“A Slytherin!” he said happily. Samira had to laugh.
Later, when he came out of his room wearing all green with silver sparkles, he looked for Samira’s approval.
“How do I look?”
“Like a leprechaun.”
